Interview with Skating Polly

Bringin' it Backwards

We had the pleasure of interviewing Skating Polly over Zoom video! Skating Polly share “I'm Sorry For Always Apologizing” – a deceptively joyous rock song that is accompanied by the official music video directed by Christian Papierniak. The multiple award-winning director, producer, and writer best known for his hit Indie feature film Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town brings the track to life with a humorous touch.“I'm Sorry For Always Apologizing” follows the raucous single “Hickey King” and is the second track to be taken from Skating Polly's new album Chaos County Line, which is set for release on June 23rd via El Camino Media. “Doctors don't think I'm sick / Just a self important prick” Kelli Mayo sings sweetly, sending up her past relationship mistakes with a cutting sense of self-judgement."This song has some of my favorite lyrics on the record" Kelli comments. "It was originally inspired by my very real habit of over apologizing, then the concept came to me to write it from a perspective of constantly hurting someone you're wildly in love with, which is a feeling I unfortunately know all too well. So, some of it is definitely hyperbole, but some of it is about my short-lived love affair with the bass player from Starcrawler. And the super huge prick I make myself out to be as the narrator is my big fear of how I must've come across to him and is also a furthering of many apologies I've given him on the matter..."Over the past decade, few artists have embodied the unbridled freedom of punk like Skating Polly. Formed when stepsisters Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse were just 9 and 14, the band have channeled their chameleonic musicality into a sound they call “Ugly Pop,” unruly and subversive and wildly melodic. With Kelli's brother Kurtis Mayo joining on drums in 2017, they've also built a close-knit community of fans while earning the admiration of their musical forebears, a feat that's found them collaborating with icons like X's Exene Cervenka and Beat Happening's Calvin Johnson, touring with Babes In Toyland, and starring as the subject of a feature-length documentary. On their forthcoming double album Chaos County Line, Skating Polly reach a whole new level of self-possession, ultimately sharing their most expansive and emotionally powerful work to date. The follow-up to 2018's The Make It All Show, Chaos County Line finds Skating Polly showcasing the depth of their growth, both as songwriters and personally. Whether they're opening up about matters internal (identity, disassociation, unhealthy coping mechanisms) or external (obsession, deception, gaslighting), Skating Polly imbue that outpouring with an unfettered emotional truth.Working again with Brad Wood, the acclaimed producer behind indie-rock classics like Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville, Chaos Country Line sees their songs journey from art-punk to noise-rock to piano-driven power-pop, matching that musical complexity with a sharply honed narrative voice that manifests in countless forms (ultravivid poetry, diary-like confession, fearlessly detailed storytelling, etc.).We want to hear from you! On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've gathered three guys for a very focused discussion about one of the year's most exciting horror movies: Ti West, Tyler Bates, and Tim Williams. Ti West is a director who's made his name with a string of what I guess you'd call indie-horror movies—though I'm not sure that does justice to the kind of auteurist vision he has. With films like The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers, he revealed a truly singular style. He tried his hand at a Western with the wild and wooly In A Valley of Violence in 2016, but returned to his horror roots this year with a pair of movies filmed back to back: X, which came out in March, and its prequel, Pearl, which is just hitting theaters now. For these two movies, which both star Mia Goth, West hooked up with indie powerhouse A24, which as you'll hear in this chat, made a big bet on these two films—and since this chat took place, have now committed to a third in the franchise. If you like creepy, stylish horror, definitely check them out. A big part of what makes both X and Pearl work is the music, and that's where the two other guys on this chat come in. Tyler Bates is a composer who's worked on music for an incredible array of films, from 300 to John Wick to Guardians of the Galaxy. But he knows horror, too, having worked on Rob Zombie's string of early flicks as well. Bates is also a music producer, having recently done the new Starcrawler album, and he was, briefly, a member of Marilyn Manson. For the more old-fashioned orchestral score for Pearl, he recruited his friend and neighbor Tim Williams, who's contributed to a ton of great film and TV scores over the past decade as well. This chat among these three gets wonderfully granular about the world of film sound. Pearl is a prequel that takes place in 1918, so West wanted Bates to come up with something very old-school. That meant real orchestrations and the kinds of instruments and musical cues you don't really hear anymore—and it works remarkably well. As you'll hear in this conversation, West really thinks like an auteur: He's concerned with every aspect of his movies, right down to whether the sound of crickets is going to interfere every so slightly with the score. All of that care definitely shows on screen, and you can hear when these guys talk how much they care about getting things just right. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Ti West, Tyler Bates, and Tim Williams for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great written pieces on this very site. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Thank fuck for Starcrawler When I first heard their debut album around 5 years ago and I was like, well, this is what the world's been waiting for. A good dose of Hollywood underbelly, a bit of glam, a bit of punk rock horror, a bit of No Place for Old Men and a huge dose of heart. Starcrawler were just feeding me all of this charisma, swagger, aggression, melody, pretty much like a parent feeds their baby a gigantic chocolate pudding. Well, maybe not all parents…. Their third album, She Said, came out on 16th September and it's a monster. It's musically broader in scope – and better for it in my opinion - but it's hands down Starcrawler. It's a real thrill to have Arrow and Henri on and talk to them about what shaped them as people, their formative influences, how their mindset keep their ideas flowing, allows them the open mindedness to experiment, combat fears and anxieties, deal with setbacks and take risks that they feel comfortable (or uncomfortable) with. You can also see their powers of persuasion to get me on a train to come see them play in Norwich.Great stuff - thanks guys.I Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. I'm Giles Sibbald and I'm talking to extraordinary musicians, DJ's and producers about how they use an experimental mindset in their lives to amplify their own creativity, pursue new challenges, overcome fears and bounce back from mistakes.- brought to you by Hey Sunday, the mothership of the experimental mindset™.- podcast logo and art by Tide Adesanya, Coppie and Paste

Oh my gosh, are you ready for the trip? I hope you have a lot of commuting because that guy, Christian Gisborne, the founder and leader of the local legends in the making Velvet Starlings likes to talk! And so do I. We just rambled on for about 2 hours... That's the beauty of podcasts. No one can tell us to shut up! Of course, you can always turn your device off and stop whenever you want, and that's the beauty of it as well. The two of us geeked out a lot about bands like King Gizzard, The Beatles, The Stones, Nirvana, Bowie, The White Stripes, and many more. In this episode, we also talked a lot about the music industry, and I think that's why it's so interesting. Especially if you're a musician. There's a lot of insight into what it's like to be an upcoming band. And it's been a good run for Velvet Starlings! You know, they're not just playing clubs around LA. They just came back from a UK tour; they also shared a stage with Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer at Beachlife Festival. That's just the beginning, because Christian's only 18. Can you believe that? I mean, I couldn't wrap my mind around it because he's a music encyclopedia, really. I met Christian at Canter's Deli on Fairfax a few years ago, pre-pandemic, you know, when we didn't live in an alternative reality. For those of you who don't know, Canter's is a 24 hour Deli near CBS. Perhaps that's why it was called Hollywood's cantina during the golden age. Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe used to date there. Also, Canter's is known for the Kibbit's Room, the little bar on the side of the Deli, where Guns and Roses used to play their first shows in the 80's. Another reason Canter's matters so much to music is that Rodney Bingenheimer eats there almost every night. Rodney started the careers of many LA bands, like the Runaways and Blondie, by playing them on KROQ when the station didn't shy away from rock n' roll back in the 1970s. It seems now they can't even acknowledge it's a rock station because you have to say: K-R-O-Q… Anyway, that's another story… A few years ago, I met Rodney at the Canter's and he started playing my band Yard Of Blondes on his Sunday show on KROQ and then on Sirius XM, where he hosts the same show now on Little's Stevie's Garage. The Velvet Starlings were also on Rodney's roster, so I guess that's why he invited us to his birthday. That was a memorable night since I met the ultimate legend Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth). Arrow from Starcrawler was there too, I remember. Our paths crossed again earlier this year when S8nt Elektric invited us all to play the Peppermint in West Hollywood. Velvet Starlings already had my heart from the Rodney days, but seeing them live blew me away. There's this incredible energy and passion for UK garage that transcends nostalgia. Even though their music is heavily referenced, they're fresh. Christian was great to talk to and I'm looking forward to discovering not one, but two upcoming records. They're that prolific. I wish I was that productive. I just took a whole year to figure out what Yard Of Blondes' new direction will be. There are about 3 or 4 songs that I like now. Here comes this kid and just throws you dozens of songs. And it's fucking good. Maybe it's time for me to retire. No fucking way! Anyhow, I'm getting carried away, because this conversation is already super long, and I feel like I'm teasing you now.
