Should youth workers prioritize their message preparation to help students discover God, or should we become guides who empower students to grow by serving him? This question gets to the heart of what we mean by "top down" and "bottom up" approaches to youth ministry. In this episode, Gareth Crispin and Robin Barfield join us from the UK to reflect about a whole-person approach to student discipleship. What is the state of Youth Work in the UK? What are some of the major differences between Stateside YM and what it looks like there? What do you mean by "Top Down" and "Bottom Up" approaches to youth ministry, and can you provide some examples? How does this middle way differ from what's been called “Incarnational Ministry” for decades? How can our listeners use this model to evaluate their ministries? Hello and welcome to episode 151 of the ACPG Podcast. This week Ben is on zoom with Conradfrom the North West based band - The Luka State. Ben and Conrad talk about all things The Luka State as well as a lot of rock n roll. Hailing from Winsford – a forgotten town between Manchester and Liverpool – The Luka State aren't overly concerned with the loftier heights of the rock'n'roll dream. “Music has always been therapy for me,” says Conrad Ellis, frontman of rising UK indie-rock powerhouse The Luka State. “You do feel like there's a weight lifted, but for people with mental health struggles and people from working-class towns, you feel like you deserve more than the cards you've been dealt – those feelings don't go away.” Ellis, along with his hometown childhood friends Sam Bell (bass, vocals), Lewis Pusey (guitar) and Jake Barnabas (drums), dropped their self-funded debut album ‘Fall In Fall Out' in 2021 to media attention and critical acclaim, but also a world gone quiet due to the pandemic. “It was hard to connect with the wider world when we were all stuck at home, so we couldn't see what impact we'd had on the scene, the industry and the wider world,” remembers Ellis. When the world opened up and the band could return to the stage, they found legions of fans who had connected with their debut album's punchy stories of hometown life and knew every word. But by then, they'd already been at work on the follow-up and were evolving as a band both musically and lyrically. Thank you to Kat for setting up the interview. And thank you to Conrad for coming on.

Liam was born and raised in a small town called Winsford in the rural county of Cheshire. And, despite all of his travels and different homes since then, he still a Northerner through and through. He is the youngest of four siblings and has three older sisters. He attended Verdin High School and later Sir John Deanne's Sixth Form College. His favorite school spot to frequent was The Drama Studio. While in school, he represented the UK in the Youth European Union and was heavily involved in volunteering and teaching dramatic arts at his local youth center. He always had an obsession with watching movies and a desire to perform on the big and little screens. At fourteen, he was one of the youngest actors accepted into the Cheshire Youth Theatre and worked with the company touring plays around Cheshire and also at the Chester Gateway Theatre. He was later accepted into The National Youth Theatre of Great Britain and worked with them at Manchester's Lowry Theatre. He studied Drama and Theatre Studies at Royal Holloway: University of London and spent his Summer breaks working for The Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco. After graduating, he took a year to travel the globe to learn more about the world and himself. While traveling, he applied to The American Academy of Dramatic Arts and was accepted into the New York Conservatory. During his training he lived in downtown Manhattan and also worked behind the scenes in casting. He then quickly started booking work. He has been a part of commercial work, fashion, music videos, theatre, and mostly recently has made some television appearances and has just starred in his feature film. His hopes for the future are to continue to grow and learn through acting. He is also musically inclined and he is currently writing his first poetry collection.

From welder to factory worker, care home manager to Age UK... Over in Winsford, Neil Corbin is in the driving seat of Cheshire's newest Men In Sheds project. The most important thing on the job? Neil says the role isn’t just admin, it’s also about getting the culture right: “You’ve got people who are absolutely hilarious whatever they say. You cannot keep a straight face. But there are also instances where just by talking you know you’re being a lifeline to somebody. People need people.” To coincide with International Day of Older Persons 2019, Brightlife Cheshire is releasing five new episodes of Discover Brightlife’s podcast. The collection of audio monologues in the Men In Sheds projects gives a voice and platform to men who previously felt lost, lonely and left behind after retirement. Nothing surprises Yvonne Boyle and Simone Cobbold anymore. They started Community Compass, which receives funding from Brightlife, walking the streets of Winsford asking those over 50 what services they felt were missing in their area. The heart of their mission is to find creative new ways for older people to stay social, get active and have fun. It just so happens that they also laugh a lot along the way too. When it comes to visiting a GP, sometimes all we need is a pill, an injection or a simple pat on the back… But how does diagnosing a patient who’s feeling lonely differ to the usual clientele passing through a doctor’s doors? And are feelings of isolation really covered under doctor’s orders anyway? Dr Achla Damania and Dr Jonathan Griffiths are GPs at the Swanlow Centre in Winsford, Cheshire. They’ve seen for themselves the difference referring some of their regular faces to Brightlife has had, and have also been challenging their own thoughts on the effects loneliness can have on all of our health. Look at any map of the district around Northwich in Cheshire and you'll see that it's dotted with numerous lakes, called flashes. What have these got to do with salt? Felicity Evans is astonished to learn that they've been created by the unregulated extraction of rock salt, which has been exploited for industrial as well as culinary purposes since the 1700s. We'll hear that salt crystals were evaporated from brine in huge pans at numerous salt works across the county, the firewood for which saw the loss of the county's forests. Meanwhile, the rock salt was hewn deep underground then, just as it is today. In fact, Felicity goes underground at Winsford when she visits the Salt Union's massive caverns, so vast they have a similar volume to that of fifty St Pauls cathedrals. Felicity meets salt historian and archaeologist Andrew Fielding, as well as Kelly Fletcher, Heritage Officer with Middlewich Town Council. Industrial archaeologist Chris Hewitson shows Felicity around the Lion Salt Works, which open to the public next year, while at Winsford rock salt mine, Felicity goes underground with mine manager, Gary Sinclair. Producer: Mark Smalley.
