Send us a textHello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul and this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome back Linzi and Mark Cowgill, creator of the UK-based Suite Natured blog, YouTube channel, and Instagram platform. Over a year ago, I reached out to Linzi and Mark to come on the podcast to talk about transatlantics, in advanced of our first transatlantic cruise around this time last year on Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady Ep 91. Suite Natured, Transatlantics. It was a fun conservation which ended with a hilarious anecdote. (Sure enough, I included it in my second annual end-of-the-year episode of the The Joy of Cruising Podcast year's "most memorable, funniest, and most embarrassing stories.” It won!) Linzi and Mark are back to share with the cruise community their reflections on their recent bucket list on Windstar Star Legend. We whizz through a couple of this week's free speech headlines today before providing listeners with an update on Linzi Smith's case against Newcastle United and the Premier League, a story which has now been picked up by the BBC. Linzi is crowdfunding to assist with her next legal stage under the relevant pre-action protocol. This is a David and Goliath situation as both organisations are well-funded and will have strong legal representation. Any listeners interested in contributing can find all the detail here. An interview of Billy Bragg in The Guardian caught our eye this week, particularly a couple of his comments towards the end of the piece, “My problem with people like Rowling, like Julie Bindel, is really who they are lined up with” and “[..] that's what I see with Rowling and the others: they are on the wrong side of the table". We discuss how and why people in the culture war seem so keen to identify with their ‘tribe' rather than the merits of the issue in hand – especially when that issue relates to free expression. We end with an update on the case of Finnish politician Päivi Räsänen. She has already been tried and acquitted by two courts for publicly expressing her Christian beliefs but has now had her acquittal appealed to the country's Supreme Court, with the prosecution continuing to call for a punitive fine. Executive Director of the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) Paul Coleman said: “This is a watershed case in the story of Europe's creeping censorship. The state's insistence on continuing this prosecution after almost five long years, despite such clear and unanimous rulings from the lower courts is alarming. The process is the punishment in such instances, resulting in a chill on free speech for all citizens observing.” ‘That's Debatable!' is edited by Jason Clift.

This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Linzi and Mark, a couple from UK and creators of the Suite Natured blog, YouTube channel, Instagram platform, and Facebook group. They are a CLIA Choose Cruise member 2024. Linzi and Mark state on their website: Based in Northern England, getting to the cruise port is always an adventure, so we usually travel the day before embarkation to avoid any cruise day hiccups. But even though we live in the rugged Yorkshire countryside, and miles from the South coast, it does not stop us loving a cruise vacation. We also enjoy planning a cruise holiday and hope you do too… because that is why we started our channel. We make videos that we would want to see ourselves, when finding out about a cruise line, and what things we can discover before we can even step foot on the ship. I consider Cruise Bloggers, Vloggers, and Content Creators as Cruise Community Champions and have featured them throughout The Joy of Cruising Trilogy and on The Joy of Cruising Podcast. Passionate cruisers like Linzi and Markepitomize the joy of cruising; they are so passionate about cruising that they want to share it with the world! Plus, I have a special affinity with UK content creators. Such a passionate cruise community and the first person to agree to be in my first book, The Joy of Cruising http://amzn.to/2EAMddF, was a UK cruise personality. In the February issue of UK's Sail Away Magazine, Suite Natured authored a feature titled “Myths & Facts of Taking a Transatlantic Crossing,” and they mentioned it on their FB Gp. The timing of coming across that post couldn't have been any better. I was in the process of creating a podcast discussing our upcoming cruise, one of which is our first transatlantic —Bucket List Cruises 2024-2025 https://www.buzzsprout.com/2113608/14366745. I reached out to Suite Natured, and it is now my pleasure to chat with Linzi and Mark about transatlantics, and to share the story of Suite Natured with the listeners of The Joy of Cruising Podcast. It's a fun conservation and ends with a hilarious anecdote. Linzi, with her granddad, at the beautiful game Linzi, a lesbian and a supporter of rights for same-sex attracted people, was the subject of a four-month investigation by a special unit set up to expose so-called hate speech in the game after she posted on trans issues on X. Newcastle began investigating Linzi following a complaint. In November 2023 she received a letter from the club saying she was banned until 2026 for breaching its equality policy, which forbids 'discriminatory' comments.Linzi is taking legal action to overturn the ban, stating that it is her right by law to express ‘gender-critical' views and that the Premier League's actions were a breach of data protection laws. Modern families come in all sizes and configurations – and often the law is playing catch-up with the issues raised by contemporary family relationships. In this episode, Linzi Bull, partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper, chats with host Yasmin Sheikh about her modern family legal practice. They focus in particular on the complex legal and ethical issues that surround surrogacy law in the UK, the emotional connections involved in representing families, and the gaps in the law surrounding polyamorous family units. (Please note: The UK government announced on 8 November 2023 that the Law Commission proposals on surrogacy, which Linzi and Yasmin discuss, will not “be taken forward at the moment.” (https://lawcom.gov.uk/project/surrogacy/)

A cloud has been cast over the new chief of the lab following revelations that a DNA extraction method may have failed across thousands of samples in criminal cases for nine years. Professor Linzi Wilson-Wilde reviewed the automated method for retired judge Walter Sofronoff's inquiry into the lab in 2022, but in her subsequent report did not mention information that she came across showing it was having serious problems recovering DNA. In this episode, Professor Wilson-Wilde launches a staunch defence of her report for the inquiry, saying she was engaged to examine a separate issue of the method contaminating crime scene samples soon after its introduction in 2007. Coming out of the rigidity of government, Linzi Hawkin asked herself: How can we find creative and innovative ways to talk about ocean that will engage people and make a greater impact? Her answer came in multiple forms and settings, from running music festivals to developing creative school curricula. As an educator and communicator, she has traveled the world to find new ways to spark conversations about sustainability and conservation. As we approach World Ocean Day on June 8, Linzi is staying busy bringing more blue into the lives of students as a co-founder of @ProtectBlue which works to connect students with the ocean through stories and action, even if they live hundreds of miles from the coast. For example, Protect Blue is shifting the narrative around plastic pollution from focusing only on the conversations from the harmful effects of plastic pollution, for example, to broaden the imagination for designing imagining plastic-free the futures and, while also working on tangible projects right now. Linzi talks with Kate Wing, our Better Worlds Ocean podcast host, about building narratives not about what is wrong with the world, but around what a regenerative future can look like, especially in the ocean. Linzi shares her excitement around the power of surf culture, restoration projects, and innovative new products. Welcome back to Part 2 of our "Carrie the Musical" 35th anniversary podcast episode with Erik Champney! Erik explains how his "Carrie: The Master Cut" film helped Linzi Hateley and others in the cast and the creative team escape 35 years of being haunted by this musical! Right away he counters any notion you have that the 1988 musical was a Broadway Flop! As Erik says, "Why are we still talking about and obsessed with a musical that is a Flop"? Erik and Andrew dig into the complex relationship between Carrie and Margaret White and their abused/abuser relationship...But Erik says there's a point where "the abused becomes the abuser." What made Linzi and Betty's chemistry so dynamic and powerful? In the song "And Eve Was Weak," Margaret belts out (so expertly done by Betty) the lyric "Oh Lord I've seen this powerful before"! Why has she seen Carrie's telekinetic power before? Erik has a lot of thoughts and let's just say that ancient Greek mythology plays a big role in his analysis! Get ready to understand how much ancient Greek myth and culture is present in Stephen King's narrative and especially in Terry Hands' direction (remember he was part of the Royal Shakespeare Company so knew his ancient Greek drama really well). Have your notebook handy so you can take down notes about mythology and how it impacts your analysis of Carrie, Margaret, Chris, Sue, Billy, Tommy, and Miss Gardner. But wait what about the Prom of it all! You're cordially invited to our Bonus Episode "Let's Talk About the Prom," an extra 35 minutes of content! Head on over to the ITBR Cafe (our Patreon) where Erik and Andrew dissect the Prom in the musical compared to the movie and why "Carrie" lives on in 2023! Only $5 a month! patreon.com/ivorytowerboilerroom A special shout out to those from the 1988 production including the amazing Betty Buckley, Linzi Hateley, Charlotte d'Amboise, Sally Ann Triplett, Gene Anthony Ray, Paul Gyngell, Scott Wise, Debbie Allen, Larry Cohen, Michael Gore, Dean Pitchford, and Darlene Love...thank you all for creating and being part of this musical! On February 13th, 1988, "Carrie the Musical" premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Company, in Stratford, and on April 28th, it would begin previews at the Virginia Theater on Broadway (now the August Wilson). To celebrate 35 years of this enigma powerhouse of a musical, Andrew welcomes Erik Champney, a NYC playwright, screenwriter, and director, who created "Carrie: The Master Cut" which is the first professional cinematic reconstruction of the 1988 musical! Right away Erik explains his origin story for discovering the Broadway musical, and like Andrew, it all started with their first encounter with Stephen King's powerful novel! Erik explains why Terry Hands, the director of "Carrie," was so drawn to this narrative and what ancient Greek tragedies and opera have to do with Terry Hands' interpretation! Andrew has always been fascinated with the complex and powerful Debbie Allen choreography so they get into how this aspect of the show connects to Carrie's home life with her mother, Margaret. Why are the high school musical numbers so drastically different than Carrie and Margaret's numbers, or are they connected somehow? Andrew taught the 1988 Broadway production to his Broadway Musical students at Stony Brook University and with Erik, the two analyze and dissect Act One of the musical. They begin with the audience walking in and being surrounded by black walls and then being plunged into darkness with the 80s rock overture! How does Erik interpret the high school students and why is ancient Greek culture and society so important for this analysis? They get into the nuanced dynamics between Tommy and Sue compared to Billy and Chris! Erik leaves us in suspense when he explains how his "Carrie: The Master Cut" helped Linzi and others escape 35 years of being haunted by this musical. And, what about Carrie and Margaret White? Can't wait for Part Two of this conversation? Today I share my conversation with Linzi Meaden around the loss of her brother Stuart. "Stu" died by suicide in the height of a global pandemic in June of 2020, just over a year ago. Linzi and I have a conversation, of sorts, every week for an hour. We co-moderate a Clubhouse room (along with Sue Egan) called "Life After Suicide" but this conversation goes deeper and is much more personal as it's just here and I sharing our personal experiences. As mom, I always gain insight (to help me be there for my kids) when speaking with siblings of suicide loss.Linzi wrote her book "What Suicide Left Behind, in the first 6 months of her grief. It is a story of her survival, but even more importantly, it is a big part of how she survived! Reading writing and sharing our stories have great power - for both sides! Linzi Meaden joins me today to discuss her projects. Linzi lost her only sibling, Stuart, to suicide on 14 June 2020. She has since made it her mission to make it more globally acceptable for those left behind by suicide to grieve more openly, and for suicide to be spoken about more openly without outdated stigmas and unkind beliefs. Her book, 'What Suicide Left Behind: Navigating Your Own Grief Journey', captures the insight and rawness into the shock of suicide, and how she got through the aftermath, with the funeral, inquest, etc. Linzi shares her tips and resources from her background working in mental health, to navigate the grieving process for herself and others. Linzi, an enormous thank you for your time. You can find out more at Amazon, Instagram and www.paradisium.co.uk.
