What's the state of AI adoption across different regions around the world, and how are people professionals reacting to it? Where does the onus lie when it comes to skills development? How can people professionals support and develop employee resilience? And finally, what should be done about the rising trend of ‘stress bragging'? CIPD Director of Profession, David D'Souza, is joined by Dr Adrian Waite, Head of Talent, Leadership and Organisation Effectiveness at Boehringer Ingelheim, in Dubai, and Alison Hodgson, Market Director – Ireland at CIPD. Next, they examine a surprising tribunal victory, where a taxpayer successfully argued that their luxury property, complete with marble swimming pool and expansive wine cellar was their main home, defeating HMRC. Finally, could President Trump’s proposed 100% tariffs on TV and film production deal a major blow to Britain’s thriving creative industries?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

HR professionals play a unique role within organisations but often find themselves in morally challenging or conflicting situations. These challenges may include balancing business needs—such as managing large-scale redundancies—while also supporting individuals through deeply personal difficulties and absorbing the emotional weight that entails. Over time, this toll can increase the risk of exhaustion, ultimately leading to burnout. Join Nigel Cassidy and this month's guests—Amy McKeown, an award-winning health, mental health, and wellbeing strategist and consultant, and Rachel Suff, Senior Policy and Practice Adviser for Employee Relations at the CIPD—as we explore the often-hidden emotional burden of working in HR and why setting boundaries is essential for maintaining wellbeing in the profession.

UK national newspapers have called HR a "parasite," "bloated" and a "shadow empire" – and the vitriol keeps coming. The criticism has been enough to drive the CIPD's chief executive, Peter Cheese, to defend the profession's work in an open letter. But do the ‘HR haters' have a point?Or is the profession simply getting caught in the culture war crossfire? We invited David Blackburn, who achieved the #2 HR Most Influential Practitioner ranking in 2024, on to the podcast to puzzle it out. In a world where skills gaps are widening and job demands are evolving at unprecedented rates, understanding how to gain a "skills advantage" is critical for organizations to stay competitive. In this episode, Anish Lalchandani, author of The Skills Advantage, delves into his insights on bridging skills gaps, building resilient teams, and preparing organizations for the future. Anish walks us through his approach, discussing how the right skills strategy can shift a team from good to exceptional and position L&D as a driver of business transformation. Whether you're a leader looking to upskill your team or an L&D professional aiming to create a sustainable skills strategy, this conversation is packed with actionable insights. KEY TAKEAWAYS The established approach to L&D is no longer enough. L&D needs to go beyond business alignment and take the lead in equipping our businesses to thrive in the future. You don´t have the wrong people, they have the wrong skills. Employees need to be convinced that upskilling benefits them and the business. A huge proportion of executive transitions fail, and we need to address this. What is going on in the market and industry helps you identify future skill needs. Use technology to help with your data analysis and become more agile. When you demonstrate impact, you get permission to do more. BEST MOMENTS “The established approach to L&D is no longer enough.” “Reskilling is a long-term game, start now.” “We need to hold ourselves accountable to actual upskilling and not just providing learning.” “You don´t have the wrong people, they have the wrong skills.” “The risk of relying on firing and hiring is extraordinary.” Anish Lalchandani Bio Anish Lalchandani is the author of the book ‘The Skills Advantage: A Human-Centered, Sustainable and Scalable Approach to Reskilling’. Having held leadership roles at leading firms like A.P. Moller Maersk (current), General Electric, Standard Chartered Bank and other organizations, he has developed extensive expertise in Talent, OD, Leadership and HR Strategy. In addition to being a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD, he is also a certified professional coach and mentor to start-up founders. Several publications, including Economic Times, Thinkers360, LeadersHum and HRD, rate him as one of the top influencers in HR and the Future of Work. What does a wellbeing-focused work environment really look like, and how involved should employers be to ensure their workforce can live healthy working lives? Should all employers pay the recently uprated Living Wage, and how can you support your people if paying the voluntary Real Living Wage is simply unaffordable? Finally, are your colleagues working as much as they appear, or are they showing classic signs of ‘fauxductivity'? CIPD's People and Transformation Director Amanda Arrowsmith discusses these questions and more with David Blackburn, Managing Director of David R. Blackburn Consulting, and Elizabeth Harvey, Head of HR at HSBC. Recorded 25 October 2024

It's widely recognised that developing a psychologically safe working environment can significantly enhance both individual and organisational performance. However, while organisations seek to reap these benefits in the long term, the immediate challenge is to cultivate a culture of psychological safety from which these benefits can grow. Join Nigel Cassidy and this month's guests: Chartered Psychologist, podcast host and Founder of Zircon Consulting, Dr Amanda Potter; Leadership Coach, Phil Lowe; and Theni Paramaguru, Senior Adviser – Future of the People Profession at CIPD, as we explore how organisations can foster, measure and fundamentally maintain psychological safety in the workplace.
CIPD research shows that 67% of UK working women aged between 40 and 60 with menopausal symptoms had experienced a negative impact on their work, with 79% reporting feeling less able to concentrate at work. Clearly, hormones play a large role in the lives of female founders of all ages. I wanted to hear from a team with great experience in helping people overcome hormonal imbalances. Margo Marrone, founder of The Organic Pharmacy and her daughter Roxy are the co-founders of eyeam, the solution-led skincare, supplements and education brand. Inspired by Roxy's experience with adult acne and hormonal imbalance, the duo are supporting people to overcome debilitating conditions which impact their energy both at work and at home. Keep listening to hear Roxy and Margo's advice on how founders can harness their hormones at work and how they can create a supportive environment for their teams too. Margo & Roxy's advice:Never go against what your body is telling youThe four different hormonal phases are effectively four different sets of skills:Follicular - energised, a good time to schedule and planOvulatory - communicative, a good time to set up talks and eventsLuteal - detail-driven, a good time to tackle paperworkMenstrual - a good time for rest and reflectionCommunication is important; there is no shame attached to your bodily cycle so share how you are feeling. In this month's episode of Tap'd Talks HR, Anthony speaks to Kelly Swingler, a Burnoutologist and former HR Director. Kelly has a mission to banish Burnout in today's changing world of work. It's what gets her out of bed every day. Kelly started her career in HR in 1998, convinced that she could stop the Monday-to-Friday dying cycle that so many people go through every single working week. She quickly gained a reputation for being a rebel and a rulebreaker and she was named by the CIPD as the UK's Youngest HR Director when she led HR at an organisation of over 4000 people. Peripheral neuropathy can pose various dangers depending on its severity and the specific nerves affected. Some of the primary concerns include:1. **Loss of Sensation**: This is one of the most common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Reduced sensation, especially in the feet and hands, can lead to an increased risk of injuries like burns, cuts, or ulcers, as individuals may not feel pain or temperature changes.2. **Balance and Mobility Issues**: Muscle weakness or numbness can affect coordination and balance, making falls more likely. This can be particularly dangerous for older adults, increasing the risk of fractures or serious injuries.3. **Chronic Pain**: Neuropathy can lead to ongoing pain, including burning, tingling, or stabbing sensations, which can significantly impact a person's quality of life and mental health.4. **Infections**: Due to numbness, individuals may not notice wounds, especially on the feet. Untreated wounds can become infected, and in severe cases, lead to gangrene or amputation, particularly for people with diabetes.5. **Autonomic Dysfunction**: If the autonomic nerves are affected, this can lead to abnormal heart rate, blood pressure fluctuations, digestive problems, or even bladder control issues. 6. **Muscle Weakness and Atrophy**: Damage to motor nerves can cause muscle weakness, difficulty with fine motor skills, or even muscle atrophy over time, impacting mobility and daily functioning.Proper diagnosis and management of peripheral neuropathy are essential to mitigate these risks. The need to better understand your people is critical to driving better employee and wider organisational performance. Welcome to SEASON 4!! It's great to be back and yes, we have returned this season in style with a fabulous guest to kick off!In this first episode, Arthi is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Crosse to discuss enhancing our ability to work with expertise. Elizabeth shares her passion about lifelong learning & explains how she navigated through several learning and personal challenges, and that some of her greatest learnings came from her own personal storm as she likes to refer to it. Dr Crosse details that she found this personal storm to be a major wake up call and decided to look inwards at how she was being more than what she was doing. It was this realisation that got her thinking that working with professionals is not only about what we know but rather who we areElizabeth explains the differences between professional (Horizontal growth) and personal growth (Vertical growth) and shares how her wish is to be a provocateur to have listeners consider different perspectives of growth. Elizabeth refers to horizontal growth as ”adding apps to our phone” where as vertical growth is more like “upgrading our system.”Elizabeth shares the ability to work with expertise is all about how we're managing relationships while being able to bring our humanity. Thereafter the skills and knowledge is what enables us to have the type of connections and relationships to work with expertise. Some wise words from Elizabeth Crosse:“if I've learned something, I can then do something differently””we don't have to agree with each other to be able to move forward”Listen to the full episode for so much more insights and ideas offered by this wonderful guest.About Elizabeth:Elizabeth is a Master Certified Coach (MCC) who works as a coach, mentor & supervisor. Her practice focuses on continuous professional & personal development needed to enhance the quality of our work. Her approach has evolved from over 30 years of involvement with the coaching profession & being a research practitioner deeply interested in how coaches develop expertise. Elizabeth has navigated dyslexia & dyspraxia to transition from an early career in education to becoming a senior HR professional specialising in people development before setting up her coaching-consultancy business. She became a fellow of the CIPD, a Master Credentialed Coach with the ICF (MCC) & completed a Diploma in Coaching Supervision. She achieved three Master's degrees (Education, Counselling Psychology and Coaching & Mentoring) & a Doctorate in Coaching and Mentoring. Her journey brought an appreciation of the integrity, intellectual rigour & compassion needed to underpin any learning relationship to grow as a person and develop as a professional. Her research on continuous professional development brought a recognition of the need for a holistic approach. This is reflected in her own approach to development, which, in addition to engaging with supervision, research writing & acquiring new knowledge, also focuses on well-being.Connect with Elizabeth here:WebsiteLinkedinDo rate, write a review and share with others.Share too, your own insights from your journey based on themes from the episode - what has worked or hasn't for you. CIPD research suggests that work is occupying a less central place in our lives, with an increasing proportion of employees feeling that a job is ‘just a way of earning money'. While it could be argued that there is nothing wrong with employees taking a transactional view of work – it may after all be a way of them self-determining healthy boundaries – disengagement with the organisation may be a concern. Join Nigel Cassidy and this month's guests: Jake Young, Senior Policy and Practice at CIPD and Garin Rouch, Consultant at Distinction, as we explore how a refreshed organisational development approach can help get that balance right.
