For this Out Takes, we celebrated the recent success of Leela Varghese at the 2026 AACTA Awards for ‘Lesbian Space Princess’ and ‘I’m The Most Racist Person I Know’ (which were two of our favourite queer films of 2025) by revisiting our interview with her from last year along with our review of LSP which is available to watch locally on Netflix now. We also reviewed ‘Christy’, the latest film from Aussie director David Michôd that stars Sydney Sweeney in the lead role that chronicles the rise of former professional boxer Christy Martin and her incredibly tumultuous life in and outside of the ring, including accepting her sexuality, along with her abusive and coercive relationship with her coach that led to an attempted murder on her life. We also had an encore presentation of an excerpt from our interview from March 2025 with actor Arka Das and the founder of the Indian Film Festival and film producer Mitu Bhowmick Lange to discuss ‘My Melbourne’ which features four unique stories that celebrate diverse voices and talents from four Indian filmmakers who worked with emerging creatives from underrepresented backgrounds to create a multicultural Australian film about identity and belonging based on authentic migrant experiences and is available to watch now on SBS on Demand. The post Christy, Lesbian Space Princess, I’m the Most Racist Person I Know and My Melbourne appeared first on Out Takes.

For this week's main podcast review, Katie Johnson, Josh Parham, Joselyn Safadi, Dan Bayer & Daniel Howat join me to discuss the latest film from David Michôd, "Christy," starring Sydney Sweeney, Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, and Katy O'Brian. Based on former professional boxer Christy Martin, the film chronicles Martin's rise to becoming America's most well-known female boxer in the 1990s, and later her abusive relationship with her husband/trainer. The film premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival to positive reviews for Sweeney and Foster's performances, but what did we think of it? Please tune in as we discuss that, the direction, writing, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! "Christy" is an American biographical sports drama film about the former professional boxer Christy Martin, played by Sydney Sweeney (she also served as one of the film's producers), directed by David Michôd and co-starring Ben Foster. The film chronicles Martin's rise to becoming America's most well-known female boxer in the 1990s, and later her husband's attempt to murder her in 2010. The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for Sweeney and Foster's performances. Michôd, Sweeney and Foster were all kind enough to spend a few minutes speaking with us about their work and experiences making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will be released in theaters on November 7th by Black Bear Pictures. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Fresh off the electric vibes of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, Daniel dives into the cinematic whirlwind of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, spotlighting three premieres that captured the festival's diverse energy. From bold character studies to gripping true stories, these films showcase TIFF's knack for launching unforgettable narratives. We're talking Saipan, the fiery sports drama unpacking the infamous 2002 World Cup showdown between Roy Keane (Éanna Hardwicke) and Mick McCarthy (Steve Coogan). Eleanor the Great, directed by Scarlett Johansson, centers on a 94-year-old woman who, after a loss, shares a fabricated story that spirals into unexpected consequences, touching on grief and connection. Then, Sydney Sweeney steps into the ring as boxing trailblazer Christy Martin in David Michôd's Christy, a biographical gut-punch exploring her rise from small-town dreamer to women's boxing icon, shadowed by abuse and resilience. Rounding out the trio is Paul Greengrass's pulse-pounding The Lost Bus, starring Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera as a rogue driver and devoted teacher racing against the 2018 Camp Fire's deadly blaze to save 22 kids on a school bus. The rest of our TIFF coverage will follow over the coming days, highlighting the good and the bad of the biggest film festival in North America. Returning to the podcast today, we have a fan favorite in the form of Mr. Jordan Harper. One of my dearest friends, this podcast's very first guest, and my Pandemic Movie Club, and Game Night crew buddy, Jordan is the Edgar award-winning author of She Rides Shotgun, Love & Other Wounds, The Last King of California - releasing in September in the UK - and Everybody Knows, which will be available everywhere in 2023.Additionally, a screenwriter and producer of such shows as The Mentalist, Gotham, and Hightown, Jordan crafted one of the most beautiful pilots for L.A. Confidential, which CBS stupidly did not pick up, but was so acclaimed he screened and did a virtual panel on the show at the ATX TV Festival. A Missouri native - and yes, that will come up in today's conversation, Jordan currently lives in L.A. along with his talented screenwriter girlfriend Megan Mostyn-Brown, and adorable dog Ellroy.Welcoming Jordan back to celebrate the release of The Last King of California next week in the UK, in this rich, thoughtful, fresh conversation, we explore a trio of films that center on criminal families (of the blood variety), including James Foley's At Close Range, David Michôd's Animal Kingdom, and Debra Granik's Winter's Bone.Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveLogo: KateGabrielle.comOriginally Posted on Patreon (9/14/22) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/71974209
Career Q&A with Joel Edgerton. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Joel Edgerton currently stars as John Connolly in BLACK MASS alongside Johnny Depp. He was honored for his performance as Tom Buchanan in “The Great Gatsby,” Baz Luhrmann's 2013 screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel. Edgerton won Australian Film Institute (AFI) and Film Critics Circle of Australia (FCCA) Awards and was nominated for an Australian Film Critics Association Award, all in the category of Best Supporting Actor. Edgerton more recently directed, wrote, produced and starred in the psychological thriller “The Gift,” also starring Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall. The independent film delivered tremendously, with a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score and an opening weekend of $12 million. He also starred opposite Christian Bale in Ridley Scott's biblical epic “Exodus: Gods and Kings.” Edgerton's upcoming credits include starring roles in Jeff Nichols' sci-fi thriller “Midnight Special,” and Gavin O'Connor's Western “Jane Got a Gun,” with Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor. He is currently reunited with Nichols on the fact-based drama “Loving,” about the couple whose challenge to Virginia's interracial marriage ban led to a landmark Supreme Court case. In 2012, Edgerton gained international attention with his role in Kathryn Bigelow's award winning true-life drama “Zero Dark Thirty.” That same year, he starred opposite Jennifer Garner in Peter Hedges' “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” and in “Wish You Were Here,” winning an FCCA Award for Best Actor. His other recent film credits include the drama “Felony,” which he also wrote and produced and which premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival; Gavin O'Connor's drama “Warrior,” with Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte; the horror thriller “The Thing,” the prequel to John Carpenter's cult classic; and David Michôd's “Animal Kingdom,” for which he won AFI and FCCA Awards for Best Supporting Actor. Edgerton had earlier starred in such films as “The Square,” directed by his brother Nash Edgerton; the Australian feature “Acolytes”; “Whisper,” with Josh Holloway”; the crime thriller “Smokin' Aces”; the drag comedy “Kinky Boots”; and George Lucas's blockbusters “Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones” and “Episode III – Revenge of the Sith,” playing the young Owen Lars, who would become Uncle Owen to Luke Skywalker. He also lent his voice to Zack Snyder's animated feature “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole” and the Oscar nominated animated short “The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello,” performing the title role. Born in New South Wales, Australia, Edgerton attended the Nepean Drama School in western Sydney. He went on to appear in various stage productions, most notably with the Sydney Theatre Company in “Blackrock,” “Third World Blues” and “Love for Love”; and the Bell Shakespeare, where he appeared in “Henry IV.” In 2009, he returned to the stage to star as Stanley Kowalski, alongside Cate Blanchett's Blanche DuBois, in the Sydney Theatre Company's acclaimed production of “A Streetcar Named Desire.” The pair also performed the play to sold-out audiences at the Kennedy Center in November of that year, followed by a run at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in December. On Australian television, he is known for playing the role of Will in the long-running series “The Secret Life of Us,” for which he was nominated for an AFI Award.

In which the Mister joins me in reviewing THE KING (2019), currently streaming on Netflix. Directed by David Michôd, with a script by David Michôd and Joel Edgerton; the story follows Hal (Timothée Chalamet) who begrudgingly accepts the throne after his father King Henry V (Ben Mendelsohn) dies. The young king is thrust into one of the most powerful positions of power at the time and must delicately maneuver the wars his father left behind, the politics of the palace and the possible treachery of all those that surround him while leading the country to victory and prosperity. The relationship between Hal and his most trusted confidante, Falstaff (Joel Edgerton) is lovely, nuanced and believably played by both actors. The film is rated R and clocks in at 2 h 20 m. In this episode we take a look at Animal Kingdom. A 2010 Australian crime drama film written and directed by David Michôd and starring Ben Mendelsohn, Joel Edgerton, Guy Pearce, James Frecheville, Luke Ford, Jacki Weaver, and Sullivan Stapleton. After his mother overdoses, 17-year-old Joshua "J" Cody (James Frecheville) asks his estranged grandmother, Janine "Smurf" Cody (Jacki Weaver), for help, and she invites him to move in with her. Smurf is the affectionate matriarch of a Melbourne crime family that uses her home as a base. Her home is also being watched by cops who are looking for her oldest son, Andrew "Pope" Cody (Ben Mendelsohn), who is in hiding. The volatile middle brother, Craig (Sullivan Stapleton), deals drugs successfully enough to have bought the house for his mother. The youngest brother, Darren (Luke Ford), follows the lead of his siblings, while family friend "Baz" (Joel Edgerton) leads the gang, which specialises in armed robbery.

On the podcast this week, Steven and Sean are violently getting our treasured car back while talking about the post-apocalyptic David Michôd film, The Rover. An announcement: Ahem. After seeing this movie, we’ll no longer be taking any criticisms of Robert Pattinson as a person or an actor. Well, assuming he doesn’t do anything crazy like star in another Twilight movie. That’s the only time we’ll accept that now. Otherwise, he’s one of the best. Onward to the film! This gritty, sparse, powerful film. The Rover may be slow moving, but it’s not light on the action or the drama. It’s a moving story about a man and his search for... a car. Doesn’t get much more intense than that, friends. Don’t worry, though, because we’re going to break down all the actual goodness in this film. From insane car crashes to intense gunfights to the tensest of interpersonal drama, this one has a whole lot going for it. This all includes a phenomenal pair of performances by Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson. Plus, this is one of those films you can impress really your movie-loving friends with. We loved the stark and grainy look of The Rover, which coupled very well with a heavy and perfect soundscape. It ticks all of our boxes.

In the latest attempt to adapt Shakespeare for modern audiences, Australian director David Michôd (The Rover) directs Timothée Chalamet in The King, a sort-of rewriting of Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 1 & 2 and Henry V. The film is set in the original time period, but Shakespeare's language has been gutted, while his structure is preserved, in favour of modern English with the occasional "ye olde" touch. The script, written by Joel Edgerton (who stars as Falstaff) and Michôd, turns Falstaff into one of the stars of Henry V (instead of showing his death...) who goes to Agincourt with Hal. In this episode, we try to make sense of why Netflix's The King was made, who it's for, how it hews closely to some aspects of Shakespeare and veers wildly away from it, and why it made us so angry. In Chapter 8 of our beloved An Experiment in Criticism, C.S. Lewis discourages the literarily proficient from reading for ideas. We haven’t spent much time wrestling with that as a crew, and it recently gave us some pause. How could you do us like that, Clive? In this episode of BiblioFiles, we discuss “On Misreading by the Literary” and mull over whether or not it negates the entire CenterForLit project. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Golden Globe Award Winner Meg Tilly of War Machine. An absurdist war story for our times, writer-director David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) recreates a U.S. General's roller-coaster rise and fall as part reality, part savage parody - raising the specter of just where the line between them lies today. His is an exploration of a born leader's ultra-confident march right into the dark heart of folly. At the story's core is Brad Pitt's sly take on a successful, charismatic four-star general who leapt in like a rock star to command NATO forces in Afghanistan, only to be taken down by a journalist's no-holds-barred exposé. The Netflix original film is inspired by the book The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in Afghanistan by the late journalist Michael Hastings. Joining Pitt in War Machine is a highly decorated cast including Tilda Swinton, Sir Ben Kingsley, Anthony Michael Hall, Topher Grace, Will Poulter, Lakeith Stanfield, Emory Cohen, John Magaro, RJ Cyler, Alan Ruck, Scoot McNairy and Meg Tilly. Ian Bryce and Plan B's Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Brad Pitt serve as producers. James Skotchdopole serves as executive producer. The film will be released on Netflix on May 26, 2017. Meg Tilly is a Canadian-American actress and novelist. For her role in the 1985 film Agnes of God, she won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
