Adeel Akhtar is a versatile British actor known for his powerful performances across film, television, and theatre. He gained widespread acclaim for his BAFTA-winning role in the BBC drama “Murdered by My Father,” and won another one, a few years later, for “Sherwood.” His other credits in front of the camera include “Four Lions,” “The Big Sick,” “Enola Holmes,” “Utopia,” and “Sweet Tooth.” On stage, Akhtar has appeared in productions at the National Theatre and the Royal Court. Currently he wows audiences as Lopakhin in a new production of Chekhov's “The Cherry Orchard” at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn. On this episode he talks about the pleasures of performing “with complete freedom” in that production, interacting with the audience, and the interesting connections he finds between that character and his own return to theater. Plus he explains why he no longer finds himself over-preparing for a role, shares something a valued teacher gave him that changed his approach to the work, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from  Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft.  Follow Back To One on Instagram

My guest today has a nickname in showbiz circles: he's called ‘Ideal Actor' because of his scene-stealing talent and his ability to get under the skin of what it is to be human. If you've watched Netflix's monster hit, Fool Me Once,  or seen Sherwood or Back To Life or The Night Manager or if you've watched the movies Four Lions or Murder Mystery 2, the chances are you will remember his performances. He's a brilliant actor, but he's also, as it happens, a wonderful guest - funny, moving and a deep thinker. He joins me to talk about his acting failures, his failure to work hard at school, an upbringing where he was forced to question the nature of his own identity and his failure to keep things in perspective. Also: karaoke. As always, I'd LOVE to hear about your failures. Every week, my guest and I choose a selection to read out and answer on our special subscription offering, Failing with Friends. Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

At least once a month we review a movie that is completely randomly generated from a random movie title generator website and last time the movie gods randomly bestowed upon us an English black comedy about four bumbling Jihadis who seek to do a suicide bombing. An absurd, hilariously and strangely touching comedy directed by notorious satirist Chris Morris. His first film. We're talking about the 2010 comedy “Four Lions”. You can find it on Tube as of this posting. We watched it on Pluto for the subtitles and it kinda sucked. Not the movie. The movie was good. Pluto kind of sucked. We randomly generate our next randomly generated review at the end of this episode and it's an exciting one. Dragon on The Couch: The Dragon watched Infinity Pool (Theatres), she really enjoyed the film, but understands why some won't like it. She also thought Mia Goth was amazing in it. Next, she watched Magic Mike's Last Dance (Theatres), she found it to have fun dancing scenes, but to be boring any other time. Lastly, she watched Nekromantik (Shudder). She thought it was a fun premise, but can understand why so many people would have a hard time with it, as its content can be appalling to some.   Berto on the Bed: Berto watched Lawrence Of Arabia (HBO), he said it was very long, but loved it and wished he could see it in a theater to see the grandness of it. Next, he watched Non-Stop (HBO), he really liked it as a mindless, fun action film with some good tension. Next, he watched Blankman (Prime), a silly black superhero comedy from the 90's that he thought it still held up. Next, he watched Surrogates (Hulu), a sci fi film he thought had a great premise and some great ideas, but failed to be a good movie. Next, he watched Hercules (Prime), a dumb action film starring the Rock. He thought it was decent and it played on the ideas that myths are built from realities. Next, he watched Physical 100 (Netflix), a reality contest show based on physically demanding tasks. He thought it was poorly edited, and wished it was more about the contests themselves. Finally for Joe Bob Corner, Berto watched The Hills Have Eyes (Shudder), he thought the film was ok, but found nothing special about it.   In this week's deep dive we watched the 2010 dark comedy Four Lions, currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

BAFTA-winning actor Adeel Akhtar (Four Lions, Stranger Things, Enola Holmes and Sweet Tooth, among others), who co-stars with Clare Rushbrook in Clio Barnard's Ali & Ava -- opening across Canada Friday -- is here to talk about how important it was to see himself reflected in Gurinder Chadha's 1993 breakout drama Bhaji on the Beach, and what real representation means for everyone who's watching. Your genial host Norm Wilner just wants to ask about making Four Lions, really.

Who Am I This Time? with David Morrissey

Adeel was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor for his role on Channel 4's Utopia, before becoming the first non-white actor to win a BAFTA award in a leading role for the single drama Murdered By My Father. He also received a British Academy Film Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Ali & Ava. But in 2010 he appeared in the Chris Morris film Four Lions and David was delighted to catch up with him to talk about it at the beginning of this year. In the Envelope: An Awards Podcast

Actor, writer, director, and voiceover artist Kayvan Novak became a combination of all those things through plenty of trial and error. And it was the errors and rejections that ultimately taught him about his artistic skills and tastes—but also his own personality, on and off camera. “It was through the endless nos, the brick walls, that forced me to change my approach and forced me to think out of the box,” he tells Backstage. “Thank God all those people said no to me, because it kind of made me who I am.” Kayvan is best known for his Critics' Choice Award–nominated performance as vampire Nandor the Relentless on FX's mockumentary “What We Do in the Shadows” from Jemaine Clement. A BAFTA TV Award winner for “Fonejacker,” the British prank call comedy he created and starred in, he's also appeared in “Syriana,” “Four Lions,” last year's “Cruella,” and “Toast of Tinseltown.” To read about the recently announced Screen Actors Guild Awards, head over to backstage.com: https://bit.ly/34EBUpr --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years. Dubbed by one newspaper as ‘the most hated man in Britain', comedian Chris Morris has always walked a fine line between biting satire and controversy. From his earliest days in local radio, allegedly engaging in stunts that led to his dismissal, to mocking radio and television news structures in On The Hour and The Day Today and skewering moral panics in Brass Eye - Morris has both delighted and appalled critics while gathering a dedicated legion of fans. Comedic experiments such as Nathan Barley and Blue Jam saw him tinker with the very essence of comedy while his first feature film, Four Lions, dealt with the unlikely subject of domestic terrorism. Some see him as a ‘comedy god' while others view him as a menace. But what drives Chris Morris to make comedy, who is he making it for and what is he trying to change, if anything? Host: Hayley Campbell. Producer: Dale Shaw.
