Letter from A. Broad

Finally, after Teresa May 2018 appointment of Brian Langstaff his report has landed in Parliament and is damming. Langstaff was not the protecting Safe Pair of Hands that May's government had hoped. Hearing the testaments of patients and their families, seeing the look on the faces of politicans and whoever else he spoke with as they lied to him made for a 2000 page plus report that defamed them all.

They meet on a weekly basis, they have the power to unseat the Prime Minister and they were known to Margaret Thatcher as the "men in grey suits". The 1922 Committee have played a pivotal role in the recent fortunes of one of the oldest and most successful political parties anywhere in the world, the Conservative Party. So, who are "the '22"? How were they formed, and what powers do they hold over the Tory leadership and the party? Professor Sir David Cannadine tells the story of the origins of the 1922 Committee and gains an insight into how our most powerful political party operates, behind the closed doors of Committee Room 14. Back in 1922, Britain was ruled by a coalition, led by the Liberal Prime Minister, David Lloyd George. But the Conservatives were the majority in government and in parliament, and they were becoming increasingly disillusioned by Lloyd George's corrupt ways and irresponsibility. In October 1922, backbench Tories held a meeting at the Carlton Club, and they withdrew their support, which brought the Lloyd George coalition to an end. The Conservatives won a landslide majority in the ensuing general election, and more than one hundred Tories became MPs for the first time. They needed to find their feet in Parliament and the Chief Whip offered to make arrangements to brief them at weekly meetings. So The Conservative Private Members (1922) Committee came into being - in April 1923! While in recent times the '22 has acquired a reputation as being the body that makes and unmakes Tory leaders, that wasn't what it was set up to do, and it wasn't what it did for most of its history. David speaks to the current Chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady MP, and the Vice Chair Nusrat Ghani; former '22 Chairman Lord Archie Hamilton; Lord Stephen Parkinson, former Political Secretary to Teresa May; Caroline Slocock, former Private Secretary to Mrs Thatcher; to the political historians Lord Philip Norton and Dr Emily Jones; and to Christopher Hope, the Telegraph's Associate Political Editor.

Women make up fewer than ten percent of national leaders worldwide, and behind this eye-opening statistic lies a pattern of unequal access to power. Julie Gillard and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, both political leaders in their own countries, set about exploring this gender bias in their book Women and Leadership: Real Lives, Real Lessons. Gillard and Okonjo-Iweala joined us to discuss the conversations they had with internationally recognized women leaders, including Jacinda Ardern, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Christine Lagarde, Michelle Bachelet, and Teresa May. From their unique positions as fellow political leaders, Gillard and Okonjo-Iweala were able to have candid conversations with some of the most influential women in the world. They relayed stories from their many interviewees, speaking honestly and freely, of having their ideas stolen by male colleagues, what it’s like to be called fat or a slut in the media, and what things they wish they had done differently. With incisive analysis backed by current research, they examined how gender and sexism affect perceptions of women as leaders. Providing rare insight, they asked us to consider why there aren’t more women in leadership—and present a powerful call to arms for women everywhere. Julia Gillard was the 27th Prime Minister of Australia, serving from 2010 to 2013. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was Nigeria’s Minister of Finance from 2003 to 2006 and from 2011 to 2015, and Foreign Minister in 2006. She was Managing Director of the World Bank from 2007 to 2011, overseeing South Asia, Europe, Central Asia, and Africa, and is currently Board Chair of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and Chair of the African Risk Capacity (ARC).

We talk about that and our disappointment with Robert Mueller’s testimony. The Affleck brothers and Matt Damon have films with questionable plots: Minutes 4:30 to 11:45 Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are reuniting on screen and co-writing a screenplay based on a 14th century revenge story of two best friends. One of them goes to war, comes back and accuses the other of raping their wife. No one believes the wife’s claim she was raped so their sentence is to fight to the death. If the husband loses his wife gets burned at the stake. Given Ben’s history of sexual harassment, and Matt’s history of discounting women’s MeToo stories, the plot sounds problematic at best. Casey Affleck is making his big return following two sexual harassment lawsuits. He’s directing and starring in a post apocalyptic film in which all women have been wiped out by a disease. We find the whole premise weak. Scarlett Johansson’s ugly engagement ring: Minutes 11:45 to 15:45 Scarlett Johansson, who is 34 and has been married and divorce twice, is engaged for the third time to Colin Jost of Saturday Night Live. She wore her engagement ring to Comic-Con and it is different to say the least. It’s a brown 11 carat diamond and it’s like a warped oval or like round teardrop shape on a curved black band. We think her engagement ring is ugly and talk about our favorite rings.  One in four women under 25 have stopped shaving their armpits: Minutes 15:45 to 20 According to research by Mintel and reported by Vogue at least one in four women under age 25 has stopped shaving their armpits. We’ve seen this trend on the red carpet a bit lately, although I’m sure Julia Roberts thinks she invented it. We give TMI about our shaving preferences and habits. Puff Diddy is dating Steve Harvey’s 22 year-old daughter: Minutes 20 to 22 Diddy, 49, is dating 22 year-old Lori Harvey, who used to date his son! We know because they were papped out together. PB&J: Politics with Brian & Jake

Americans Brian and Jake tackle the biggest issue in British politics. The impending split of the UK and the EU. Brian says it is foolish to leave the EU but Jake seems to think everything will work out for an independent Britain. At the end of the episode they circle back around to what this could mean for an increasingly divided United States. With much humor and banter, the boys provide information and analysis of the crisis across the pond.

Strap on those skis because it's time to escape Blofeld's lair in Episode 11 of The Words Are Not Enough! In this episode Griffin (@griffschiller) and Brody (@brodyserravalli) discuss the following:Tomorrow Never Lies:* Ed Sheeran * Speaking with James Cordon while promoting his new album on the Late Late Show, Ed Sheeran discussed his interest in performing a James Bond title song: “With Bond, I've had a theme tune written for about three years, just in case,” he said, admitting filmmakers haven't got round to actually asking him yet. “But it's good, it's good.”* James Norton * Actor James Norton has overtaken Tom Hardy as the most favoured to assume the role of 007 after Daniel Craig, with bookies upping his odds to 5/2 after this role in McMarfia. * On the Bond rumours, Norton said: “It's lovely, wonderful and complimentary to be involved in that conversation but it's just a rumour mill and that's as far as it goes. I did mention at the time that those scenes would possibly contribute to the [Bond] rumours but McMafia is its own beast. I hope Daniel Craig does five more movies and can keep the rumours on himself. I'm a big fan of his and - selfishly - I'd like him to carry on.”* Female 007 * Teresa May: Speaking with journalists on her RAF Voyager, Teresa May offered her thoughts on the 13th Doctor in BBC's long-running series, Dr Who, being played by a woman. The conversation however, quickly turned to Bond: “I think it's a great move forward for girl power that there is going to be a female Doctor Who. And one day there should be a female James Bond.” But when asked who should replace Craig, May added: “I don't know who is being lined up. I read the other day that James Norton was being talked about as a possible James Bond. “I think he did an interview where he said he'd quite like to.” When asked if Norton was her favourite for the part, she replied: “That's a leading question! I don't know who the other candidates might be.” * Christoph Waltz: When asked about his thoughts of a female Bond while promoting his latest film, Downsizing, Waltz told Mr Porter: “Why? Because [Italian feminist writer] Oriana Fallaci said so? Come on. Have your own movie if you want. Why does it have to be James Bond? What would be her first name? Jemima? My answer is decidedly not.”* Babs says we shouldn't expect any major Bond news until 2018 * Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, via The Spy Command, Barbara Broccoli confirmed that major decisions regarding Bond 25 will not be made until early 2018, adding that film's director and title are "still to be determined" * Babs also confirmed that the script for Bond 25 is still in development, under veteran Bond scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade: "[They're busy] working away, trying to come up with something fantastic.” * With regards to the ongoing rumours surrounding the distribution of the Bond film, Babs said this: “It's exciting to be courted. We'll hopefully be making that decision early next year.”Shaken but Heard:* Favourite stories of the year* Best snow action sequences in the series* OHMSS appreciation hour SUBSCRIBE to the Men vs. Movies YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UCAlhR6RxXQux2LWok1cIL6wFollow us on Twitter: @MenVsMoviesLike us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/menvs.movies/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-words-are-not-enough/support
