In the early months of 1993, the United States was put on notice. In a country that hadn't faced much in the way of homeland terror, an explosion in the heart of one of the nation's most populous cities instilled foreign fear in the hearts of Americans. A near one ton bomb obliterated multiple floors of a parking garage beneath two of the biggest symbols of American economic might - the World Trade Centers. Eight years before the Twin Towers would be reduced to rubble, this blast was the biggest terroristic threat on American soil, and today, on the Gems of History, we will explain how it all happened. 9/11 remains the most infamous act of terrorism perpetrated against the United States - but it did not mark the first time terrorists had targeted New York's World Trade Center. Thirty years ago on February 26 1993, a huge 600kg bomb exploded in the parking garage beneath the twin towers, causing a 100ft crater that was several stories deep. Six people died instantly, with thousands hurt in panicked attempts to evacuate. And yet, due to what would happen at the World Trade Center eight years later, this attack is rarely remembered.In this episode, James is joined by leading terrorism expert and University of Birmingham historian Dr Steve Hewitt to learn more about the day Middle Eastern terrorism arrived on American soil, foreshadowing the tragic events of 2001.The Senior Producer was Elena GuthrieThe Assistant Producer was Annie ColoeMixed & edited by Aidan LonerganFor more US history, check out History Hit's newest podcast - American History Hit. In February 1993 a thunderous explosion rocked the parking garage below the World Trade Centre carving out a crater in the floor that was 100 feet wide and several stories deep. Initially it was believed that a transformer may have exploded because the idea of terrorism on United States soil seemed impossible. On this episode of History of the 90s, host Kathy Kenzora looks back at an event that marked the beginning of a new era of terrorism and foreshadowed much worse things to come. On February 6th. 1993, a truck bomb exploded under the WTC North Tower. Perpetrated by Ramzi Yousef, Mahmud Abouhalima, Mohammed Salameh and several others, they intended for the bomb to topple the North Tower and send it crashing into the South Tower killing thousands in retaliation of the USA backing of Israel. Although that plan failed, they did manage to kill 6 and wound several hundred others. And, keeping up with a common theme in most of our shows, it is claimed by an FBI informant that the FBI assisted in building the bomb. Let us know what you think about the FBI's involvement by emailing us at bangdangpodcast@gmail.com or find us on Twitter @OGMMPodcast!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/show/outlaws-gunslingers/support.
9/11 survivor & FDNY Veteran Tim Brown lost nearly 100 of his friends in the September 11 terrorist attacks, including his two best friends. He has made it his mission to assure that our nation never forgets. Tim is no stranger to the face of terrorism. He responded to the 1993 World Trade Center Bombing and was dispatched to help with the recovery efforts following the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing. But nothing could have prepared him for the events of 9/11. He had been assigned to Mayor Giuliani's Office of Emergency Management – a role Tim describes as “taking off his helmet and putting on a tie.” He was in his office across the street from One World Trade Center when the first plane hit the North Tower. Tim describes some of the horrible moments he experienced, including last seconds with his fellow firefighters before they climbed the stairs with full knowledge that they may never return. “It was what all the firemen, policemen and EMT's did that day. They fulfilled the oath they had taken to give their lives for someone they didn't know.” Tim was 20 feet from the front of the South Tower when it collapsed and sought cover in the Marriott Hotel next door, which was subsequently buried under the rubble. Drawing upon his training, he held on to a vertical column while the wind (later proven to be has high as 185 mph) picked him up. “I was just waiting to be crushed in that moment”. Tim and a few dozen others were able to find their way out of the rubble. We discuss how the number of rescuers dying from 9/11 illness is rapidly approaching the number killed during the attacks. Tim has become a national leader in preserving the memories of those who were murdered on 9/11 at Ground Zero. He feels particularly compelled to share these stories with younger generations who had not been born at that time. Tim volunteers with the National September 11 Memorial Museum and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. He can be reached via Eagle Rise Speaker's Bureau. .fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-0{width:100% !important;margin-top : 0px;margin-bottom : 0px;}.fusion-builder-column-0 > .fusion-column-wrapper {padding-top : 0px !important;padding-right : 0px !important;margin-right : 1.92%;padding-bottom : 0px !important;padding-left : 0px !important;margin-left : 1.92%;}@media only screen and (max-width:1024px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-0{width:100% !important;}.fusion-builder-column-0 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 1.92%;margin-left : 1.92%;}}@media only screen and (max-width:640px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-0{width:100% !important;}.fusion-builder-column-0 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 1.92%;margin-left : 1.92%;}}.fusion-body .fusion-flex-container.fusion-builder-row-1{ padding-top : 0px;margin-top : 0px;padding-right : 0px;padding-bottom : 0px;margin-bottom : 0px;padding-left : 0px;}

In part one of this two-part episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, retired agent John Anticev reviews his investigation into the 1990 murder of Rabbi Meir Kahane and his operation of an FBI confidential source who infiltrated an operational cell of Egyptian Islamic radicals. The cell's spiritual leader was Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, also known as the Blind Sheik. Members of this group, including Ramzi Yousef, were later found to be responsible for the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. John also talks about the stress and frustration he endured during the 6-year FBI internal investigation into his handling of the confidential source, who, unknown to John, had recorded many of their conversations. Retired FDNY Lieutenant Kevin Shea was involved in one of the most daring roof rope rescues in FDNY history. On May 14, 1991, FDNY firefighters conducted two technical roof rope rescues at the same fire in Midtown Manhattan, hanging 12 stories above the crowded New York City streets. The dramatic rescue was filmed live and later recreated for television. The save was one of the rescues featured in the FDNY Pro film, the Last Resort. Shea also responded to and was injured at the first World Trade Center Bombing in 1993. In this episode of the FDNY Pro Podcast, Shea recounts these iconic events from his old quarters--Rescue Co. 1 in Manhattan. Captain John Ceriello hosts.

#DonSadowy: #RenderedSafe centers on the remarkable life of former NYPD Bomb Squad Detective Donald Sadowy. In the aftermath of the February 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the most devastating terrorist attack on the United States to that point, Sadowy risked his life to search for evidence in the shattered and dangerous sub-basement. There, he discovered a piece of chassis frame that contained a VIN number which enabled law enforcement to catch the perpetrators just in time. The massive investigation and recovery effort that followed is revealed through Sadowy's recollections as well as those of a number of other law enforcement agents, many never before told. The World Trade Center bombing, designed to topple the Twin Towers, presaged 9/11. On that day, Sadowy defied overwhelming odds to survive being buried alive under the rubble of the collapsed North Tower. In Forrest Gump-like fashion, during his career Sadowy was an astounding magnet for many other significant events and persons. He served for two years as personal bodyguard for U.N. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim. During his 16 years in the NYPD Bomb Squad, he was involved in the Abortion Bomber case, the investigation of TWA flight 800, global intelligence missions, the handling of a multitude of improvised explosive devices, and the protection of key global figures such as Mikhail Gorbachev and Fidel Castro. At the end of his career, while serving in the U.S. Marshal's office, Sadowy interacted with notables such as John Gotti Jr. Based on extensive and exclusive interviews with a wide range of officials, Rendered Safe takes the reader into the life of a bomb technician and provides a tour of many of the most noteworthy events of recent decades. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

When talking about 9/11 some people for one reason or another have a tendency to look at the events of that day in a vacuum, or as a starting point then spiraling forward into chaos. In this episode and the next couple, we are seeking to put the events of that day in historical and political context. We start this daunting story in 1683 and trace it all the way to the World Trade Center bombing in 1993.Featured Books: Loosing Bin Laden, How Bill Clinton's Failure Unleashed Global Terror -Richard MinterOsama Bin Laden – Dr. Michael ScheuerThe 9/11 Commission ReportDocumentary: Road to 9/11Sign up for the Mailing List: http://eepurl.com/YIbLfBecome a subscriber: www.subscribestar.com/abracast Become a Pateron: https://www.patreon.com/abracastDonate! paypal.me/stigmatastudios Flick App: theabracastAdvertise on The Abracast: https://www.advertisecast.com/TheAbracastVoice over work – Hila Assor https://hilaassor.com/ Theme Song “Red Horse Rising” by X-Proph3t: http://www.reverbnation.com/xproph3tStigmata Studios Comic Books and Graphic Novels: www.stigmatastudios.com Incidental Music (royalty free) by Ross BugdenEmail Jon: Towers113@gmail.com Visit: www.stigmatastudios.comFind Jon on Twitter: @jonnyaxx https://twitter.com/JonnyAxx Find Jon on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/#!/stigmatastudiosFind Jon On Instagram: http://instagram.com/stigmatastudios
