The Tunnel to Towers Foundation's “Steel Across America” tour visited the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community near Scottsdale, Arizona this summer. A nearly 17,000-pound steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center's South Tower was displayed at the USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River. Organizers say it was the tour's first and only stop on sovereign Tribal land as the beam traveled more than 10,000 miles across the country ahead of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The foundation says the stop recognized the longstanding tradition of military service among Native people. The memorial gardens are home to a piece of the USS Arizona, which was destroyed during the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. For the first time, steel connected to the 9/11 attacks was displayed there alongside steel from the USS Arizona. Jani Ingram’s students investigate a water source on the Navajo Nation. (Courtesy Jani Ingram) A professor at Northern Arizona University has added new data to a map of safe drinking water on the Navajo Nation. KNAU's Chris Clements reports the map is intended to help tribal communities still struggling with the effects of past uranium mining. Professor Jani Ingram, Navajo Nation, had been driving across the reservation for a while with her student. Their goal? Find and test a remote well that one family was using. “It’s something that needed to be tested because it it really wasn’t great. It had pretty high uranium.” It can be hard for Navajo families to know if the wells near their homes have been contaminated by high uranium levels, which have been linked to health issues like kidney disease and lung cancer. And her work is not over: there are tons of tribal wells that have not been tested, something she says she is willing to do at no cost. Indigenous students enrolled within the Chandler Unified School District are featured in a land acknowledgement video from 2025. (Courtesy CUSD) Last year, Indigenous students filmed a brief land acknowledgment for the Chandler Unified School District in Arizona. Following a fierce public debate Wednesday, the governing board voted to play this video at the beginning of all its meetings and future graduation ceremonies. KJZZ's Gabriel Pietrorazio has more. “We recognize the past, present, and future inhabitants on this land.” “We will cherish, respect and protect this land for generations to come.” This message is only a minute and 43 seconds long, but it means a lot to Indigenous Parent Committee co-president Monique John. “We went into creating this video with positive intentions for our students and communities – all students Native and non-Native.” Chandler governing board member Kurt Rohrs disagrees. “It has no real purpose in addressing our primary mission of improving academic performance for our students. This statement is an empty performance gesture of wokeness, which really doesn't accomplish anything.” Basha High senior Syndel Preston, who is president of the school's Indigenous student club, suggests otherwise. “I want my Indigenous peers to know that they are seen, that the lands CUSD stands on is theirs as well. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Stephen Siller had just completed a night shift with New York City Fire Department (FDNY) Squad 1. He was driving home to play golf with his brothers when he heard over his radio that America was under attack.  He turned his truck around.  When he reached the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, it had been closed. So, Stephen strapped on nearly sixty pounds of firefighting gear and ran through the tunnel toward the Twin Towers. He was never seen alive again.  In this episode of Army Matters, LTG (Ret.) He had traded his fire helmet for a tie in 1998 when Mayor Giuliani invited him to help build a new emergency management office. That morning, he was simply reading the newspaper and eating breakfast when the power went out, signaling that something was terribly wrong. When a young woman told him a plane had hit the tower, Tim did not hesitate. He put on his helmet, his windbreaker, and his boots, and he ran toward the North Tower. While most people were running away from danger, Tim Brown was running directly into it, driven by a lifelong instinct to help people in need. He had been doing it since he was 15 years old, and September 11th was no different.   The Greatest Love Witnessed in the Tower Lobby Inside the towers, Tim Brown encountered something that stopped him in his tracks, not in fear, but in awe. Hundreds of office workers were making their way toward the escalators and underground exits, directed by Port Authority officers to safety through the shopping mall beneath the complex. What Tim saw was not panic or chaos but something far more remarkable and deeply human. For every person who was elderly, pregnant, disabled, or injured, there were four or five ordinary office workers helping them move to safety. No one was pushing or trampling others. People were reaching out to strangers in the middle of a catastrophe. Tim describes this moment as seeing the truth of 99 percent of humanity, a truth he has carried with him ever since and that forms the very foundation of his book’s message.   Tim Brown’s Mission: Honoring the Real Heroes Tim Brown is clear about why he wrote “The Greatest Love.” He wanted the title to reflect the actions of the 343 firefighters, 72 law enforcement officers, EMTs, paramedics, and others who gave their lives that day. Each one of them made a conscious choice to lay down their life for strangers, and Tim Brown believes that act is the purest definition of love that exists. He has spent the years since September 11th advocating for first responders, their families, and the broader healing of a nation. He has sat in the courtroom at Guantanamo Bay and witnessed terrorists express pride in their actions. Yet despite everything he has seen and lost, Tim remains a man shaped not by hatred but by love. His story is a reminder that even on the worst day imaginable, love is the force that endures. Bio Tim Brown is a retired, decorated 20-year FDNY firefighter and 9/11 survivor who lost friends on September 11, 2001, including his two best friends, Captain Terry Hatton and Captain Patty Brown. A veteran of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, Brown served as a supervisor for Mayor Giuliani's Office of Emergency Management on 9/11. On that day, Brown was responsible for the safe evacuation of hundreds of workers in the South Tower before being caught in its collapse while only 20 feet away. He survived by holding onto a vertical column in the lobby of the nearby Marriott Hotel as debris buried the structure. Now a sought-after motivational speaker and media commentator, Tim Brown dedicates his life to defending the memory of those lost and educating audiences on resilience, leadership, and emotional recovery.
