A Faith Of Their Own Parenting: Winning the Battle for Your Child's Heart November 12, 2023 This Sunday we are wrapping up our series, Parenting: Winning the Battle for Your Child's Heart. We've covered a lot of ground the past few weeks, but we've saved the best – and maybe the hardest – for last. As parents who have committed their lives to Christ, we want our kids to grow up to be followers of Jesus too. But all too often, we feel inadequate or intimidated by the responsibility of teaching or discipling our kids. So we hope they'll have great Sunday School teachers or youth leaders that can take care of that. The truth is that you are the most influential person in your child's life. For better or worse, your voice carries the most weight and your life has the most impact. Discipling your child isn't rocket science – no seminary degree required; but it is one of the most challenging and important things you'll ever do. It requires humility, vulnerability and intentionality. Helping your child develop their own relationship with Jesus is the most important work you will ever do. We'll help you figure out how to do it this Sunday. ----------------------------------- TAKE YOUR NEXT STEP ---------------------------------- Give Online: https://www.simplechurchgiving.net/App/Giving/dsf Message Notes: https://www.dayspringfellowship.com/sermons Like, comment & subscribe to stay updated! We are midway through our series Parenting: Winning the Battle for Your Child's Heart. This week, we're taking a look at the weight of our words. We all know that words are powerful and that we need to be wise in how we use them. We know words can be misunderstood, taken out of context, or be twisted. But when it comes to our kids, there's a whole ‘nother level of potency to the words we speak, and to the ones we don't. Words, both spoken and unspoken, from a parent to a child, carry more weight than you might realize. And far too often we underestimate the weight of our words. Join us this Sunday, as we unpack the power of words in the lives of our kids. ----------------------------------- TAKE YOUR NEXT STEP ---------------------------------- Let us know that you were watching with us and you will be entered to receive a free prize by completing our Connection Card: http://dsf.church/ecard Give Online: https://www.simplechurchgiving.net/App/Giving/dsf Message Notes: https://www.dayspringfellowship.com/sermons Like, comment & subscribe to stay updated! We are in week 2 of a six-week series that we've called Parenting: Winning the Battle for Your Child's Heart. Throughout this series we are taking a look at big picture principles for successful parenting that will help us to navigate the nitty gritty of daily family life. We all know that change is one of the most certain things about life. Every time we turn around something else is different, updated, changed in a way that requires us to adapt. And it's no different in parenting. Just when we think we have things figured out, something changes – a sleep regression hits, or a growth spurt happens, or hormones kick in, or boundaries start being tested. The challenge for parents is knowing how to navigate the changing seasons in our kid's lives with patience and grace. I invite you to join us this week as we take a look at the different seasons of parenting and unpack some powerful principles that will equip us to navigate these seasons successfully. Destination Parenting Parenting: Winning the Battle for Your Child's Heart October 8, 2023 This week we are beginning a new series we're calling Parenting: Winning the Battle for Your Child's Heart. Being a parent is the most challenging job in the world. Just when you think you've got things figured out, something changes. That's both the fun and the frustration of parenting. And in order to be successful, we need an unchanging goal. A north star, so to speak, that keeps us focused and on track, even as the seasons and strategies of parenting shift. Parenting is the ultimate job. And though there are no higher stakes in life than the successful care and nurturing of another human – it seems there are no educational requirements for the job. There's no degree you can earn to prepare yourself, no training courses you have to take to qualify; you don't need to pass any tests to make sure you're ready for the responsibility. And the reality is, many parents are just kind of winging it, doing the very best they can to keep the kids alive, day in and day out. It's not that they don't want to be successful in raising happy, healthy, well-adjusted kids, it's just that they are so busy surviving, there's no time to think about thriving! And while there is no parent certification course to prepare you, there is wisdom and truth available to help you on the journey. ----------------------------------- TAKE YOUR NEXT STEP ---------------------------------- Give Online: https://www.simplechurchgiving.net/App/Giving/dsf Message Notes: https://www.dayspringfellowship.com/sermons Like, comment & subscribe to stay updated! Episode Summary: One of my daughters had the “worst day of her life today” and I didn't. It was hard, but I experienced the Holy Spirit working in my heart, my parenting, and my family. We all have bad days, but can we as mamas learn to not let our kids' bad days become our bad days or feel like their behavior is a reflection of our parenting? How do we hold on to Jesus and trust we are doing our best as mamas when we are getting called “the worst mom in the world”? Ultimately, Jesus, but an awesome tool that he is using in my life is the Connected Families' Framework. In this episode, I introduce you to the Connected Families' Framework and the four messages that it is built upon. These are messages that we can seek to share with our kids through our words and actions during peaceful times, conflict, and discipline. These messages point us all to Jesus and his salvific work on the cross. They are: You are safe with me. You are loved no matter what. You are called and capable. You are responsible for your actions. And it's the same with a dad.” 19:35 - In a team, sharing and creativity goes down without trust. 20:05 - “Trust is the only indicator. You don't have a leadership issue. The only reason you follow a leader is trust. Even diversity. 20:31 - 8 Pillars of Trust Framework - the way to build trust 20:44 - Biblical examples of trust/lack of trust: Prayers not answered because they didn't trust God. Moses didn't get to enter the promised land because he didn't trust God enough. Daniel 6:23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God. David's trust - Psalm 20:7 - Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. Prov 12:22 - The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy. 21:50 - The most deceptive person is the one who appears trusted. And you can build those eight pillars and look trusted for a time, but isn't actually worthy of it. So to me, if you want to be dadAWESOME you gotta be trustworthy.  22:15 - The Trust Edge is the advantage of trust. The greatest advantage you can have is trust, by being trustworthy. 22:30 - Talking about clarity, which is one of the pillars, and how it impacts family vision. 23:36 “Your kids will either write their own story or they will join someone else's.” 24:18 Asking the question “What does an 18-year-old Horsager look like. What is the output we're going for.” He asked yes this question when his first daughter was born. ----------------------------- 27:19 - Partnership with Connected Families.  Discipline that Connects with Your Child's Heart (Book & Course) 8-Part Parenting course that starts on Oct 6. They have to start to see that that's the core issue - you have to think bigger about trust.” 30:41 “Even though there's eight pillars of trust, I would say the king of the pillars is consistency, sameness….whatever you do consistently, you will be trusted for. If you're late all the time, I will trust you to be late.” 31:24 - There are enders and repeaters. Be a repeater dad. Aristotle - “You are what you repeatedly do.” Augmandido - “We are a slave to our habits.” 32:43 - Healthy leaders need healthy accountability. You have to have accountability. 36:15 - An example of apologizing without excuses 36:36 - The only way you will rebuild trust is to make and keep a new commitment 36:45 - The Trusted Leader Podcast and the Trusted Leader book   Conversation Links:   Fathers for the fatherless The Trusted Leader Book Pre-Order https://davidhorsager.com/ The trust edge book by David Horsager https://trustedge.com/ Partnership with Connected Families. Seth, Lauren and their three children homestead with a large garden and handful of animals on a small farm in Texas. With over 15 years experience working with children and being a children's pastor, Seth has cultivated a passion to help parents create a thriving family culture at home. Sometimes parenting is overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be! Seth and Lauren love being able to equip people with the practical and spiritual tools they need to create the thriving family culture they've always dreamed of.   Conversation Notes:   Fathers for the Fatherless >> help our team reach the $100,000 goal. 5:58 - Seth Dahl's story of growing up with a single mom and encountering Jesus. Working in Children's ministry. 7:59 - On encouraging family and parent ministry - “If what happens in church doesn't happen in the home it's not Christianity. If this is something we DO not someone we ARE, we are wrong, it's event-based religion.” 9:08 - Hand to hand combat vs. sniper/archer combat 9:21 Psalm 127:4 - Children born to a young man are like arrows in a warrior's hands and blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. “The arrow is the long-range weapon of the spirit world.” 9:50 - “God says you also have arrows and they're your children and if you learn to work with your children in the kingdom, you can actually hit the enemy from a great distance like a sniper would. You can take him out before he even saw you. You don't have to wait for him to come close and pull out your sword and fight him in hand-to-hand combat..you can shoot him before he even sees you. But that's the importance of learning to work with our children.” 10:58 “Arrows are not meant to sit in the quiver, arrows are meant to fly and strike the enemy, and if we don't let our kids get out and let them do that, we are actually preventing them from operating in the God-given identity that they've been called to, and we're just protecting protecting protecting instead of preparing and releasing and aiming and it's like the whole world will be affected by what we do with our children.” 12:18 - Analogy of purchasing pre-made arrows and the attitude of some parents toward the church. Treating church like a sporting goods store. 14:00 - The way God text in the Bible is visions and dreams 14:53 1 Corinthians 2:16 - for, “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ” 15:46 - When I say I hear the voice of God, “99% of the time what I'm really saying is an idea popped into my head when I needed it most, and I sort of aimed my heart toward the Lord like, ‘Help! Help!' and an idea pops into my mind and I'm like, ‘God is talking to me.' Why? Because I don't need him to speak in a certain way, he can drop an idea.” 16:40 - “I can actually pick up thoughts from people around me, from the spiritual atmosphere around me, or I can have thoughts that God sent me. I attack myself thinking that it was my thought, when it was really the enemy. Or I dismiss God's voice thinking it was my thought. And when I dismiss God's voice, when I think I made it up, then I live in a whole bunch of uncertainty because if I don't think it was God talking, faith doesn't come. Whereas if I think ‘that might have been the Lord,' Boom. What comes? The faith of God comes with that thought.” 17:28 - “Faith comes by hearing. So if I think I'm not hearing, I'm actually not able to walk in faith at all if I don't think I can hear Him. Faith doesn't come by reading. Faith comes by hearing.” 18:06 - What do you do if you're struggling to hear God's voice? “His job is to lead us and guide us into all truth”…. Comparing God to a tour guide. “The Lord is our guide. He is our shepherd. He's constantly leading and guiding. He may just use a language we think he's going to, so we end up missing his voice, thinking it was something else. Or if I believe God's not talking to me, that right there is the problem. If I believe God is not talking to me, then that belief blocks me from hearing.”   ----------------------------- 19:46 - Partnership with Connected Families.  Discipline that Connects with Your Child's Heart (Book & Course) 8-Part Parenting course that starts on Oct 6. We want to teach our kids to go to the Comforter, and there are other times we are representing the Comforter to them. 25:25 - We don't want to teach our kids to go to other things (TV, sweets, etc) for comfort instead of going to the Comforter. “I don't want my kids to go to anything else but Him for comfort, otherwise I create a false comforter for them...” 26:31 - “ As a dad, I want the comfort sometimes of a peaceful home, so I will fuel false comforts to my kids so they don't whine, etc...so I'll be quick to bring a solution which reinforces a behavior so it's like it layers to my own source of comfort and my daughters' comfort.” - Jeff 27:15 - What has added more life to his family. “If I know what makes me come alive because I know me, then I can actually head that direction. Heading that direction makes me come alive, whether I'm fully walking in it or not, just knowing and actually going that direction...that makes me come alive. But I have to have self-awareness for that and I have to have wife awareness, and I have to have kid awareness.” figure out what makes you come alive and head in that direction 29:57 - he never wanted us to eat from the tree that made things fair he wanted us to eat from the tree that gave us life. 30:02 - my job is not to make things fair my job is to give you life, so if that thing doesn't give you life, or if it's going to take life away from you 30:52 - Have awareness of what gives our kids life 31:00 - Raising Spirit-Led Kids Book by Seth Dahl - coming out in Dec - available now for presale 32:29 - Seth's resources: win-win parenting (for everyday life.) Your role is super important as a dad, no matter where your kids are at, no matter where your relationship's at, your role is important. I've had the Lord several times [tell me] it may not look like this, but they're actually begging for you in their life, it may not look like that's what they're saying but they are ....begging for you to be there...you're very necessary to your family.” 35:05 - “The Lord has said, ‘I'm very committed to helping you succeed....I gave you the privilege of being a father and feeling what I feel. I gave you privilege to step into that part of my identity and I'm fully behind you I fully support you. I want you to succeed as a dad because when you succeed it shows the earth who I am.
