Liberal mouthpiece Joe Rogan, and I guess heterosexual comedian Tony Hinchcliffe met me at a gun range in Texas to shoot the poop and tell stories about the past while Tony caressed his new girlfriend. We took some questions from my Patreon to keep us going while listening to the manly sounds of murder tools going off in the distance. Both Tony and Joe are about to get that Skeptic Tank bump! So look for them to breakthrough on the scene in the near future. This was actually supposed to be just me and Tony on this one but Joe showed up and we figured it'd be nice to at least have one gram of testosterone on the pod.  For more Ari:  Subscribe on YouTube  Listen to Skeptic Tank Join Ari's Patreon  Shop Merch  Follow Ari on Instagram - @riparishaffir  Ari Shaffir - Linktree   2022 Tour Dates & Tickets  01/21 | Phoenix 02/08 | NYC: Ari Shaffir's Renamed Storyteller Show  02/11 | Tampa  02/17 | Denver  02/27 | Vancouver 03/25 | Grand Rapids 03/26 | Detroit 03/31 | Appleton, WI    For more Joe: The Joe Rogan Experience | Podcast on Spotify PowerfulJRE - YouTube Twitter - @joerogan Instagram - @joerogan   For more Tony: Tony Hinchcliffe - Tour Dates Kill Tony - YouTube Instagram - @tonyhinchcliffe Twitter - @TonyHinchcliffe   The Music: Ray Wylie Hubbard - Screw You We're From Texas Gene Autrey - Deep in the Heart of Texas Nina Simone - Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood Nico Vega - The Beast Nikki Glaser - Bob    Thank you to our sponsor! Play Episode Listen Later Dec 28, 2021 164:44

Nate Marshall and I talk about how we both kind of feel the media is turning everybody on each other. We kept it funny, relaxed. Nate watched so much TV and read so much social media during the BLM protests that he could feel his worldview changing toward the negative. We were both thinking about these ideas when we met last summer and we immediately traded stories and ideas on it. Now we're both kind of feeling that our thoughts are no longer our own. But for real, we kept it light. It's a great fun conversation. I wish I could talk to more people like this about far-out ideas and subjects without any worry about emotions flaring up. Almost everyone I know is just about on the same side of most issues. So it's wild that we're at each other's throats so much. Even comedians! We're a tiny group of fringe entertainers and we've somehow invented divisions among ourselves that have standup comedians hating other standup comedians! Nobody even fucked anybody's girlfriend! It's just people in a tiny group, hating other people in this tiny group because we're being rewarded for turning on each other or they're mostly showing us views we don't share by people we're not friends with. We're doomed! Joe List came over to argue with me about music. For real Joe is top 3 or 4 comics into music. He's got great taste and he loves going to live shows even more than I do. And I really really love going to live shows. He does it sober all the time which is crazy to me, but that goes to show you how much he likes music. Legit though, all we really disagree on is whether Pearl Jam and Nirvana are great or just really good.  The intro is a manic recounting of the last two concerts I went to. Comedians and Beach Cops Ryan Oneill and Jeff Danis join me at a park in Los Angeles right outside an area where all the homeless people of Los Angeles take their malnourished dumps. It stunk so bad. The flies were not as unbearable as the stench that brought them. It's always a great time with the D&O! We saw vapid LA morons unicycle by looking for attention any way they can get it, as is the way in Los Angeles. It's a horrible town. And we've seen it turn our friends into soulless mental patients with enough money to somehow avoid being committed.  I think we also saw the beginning of a guerilla porn shoot in the woods. That and a tremendous moment where it was all O'neill could do to stop from trying to kill a deer with the blade he keeps tucked between his balls.  The title is a metaphor for how tenuous it is to navigate life in Hollywood without losing your humanity. We got a whopper! Comedian and mom Ms Pat join comedian and America's dad Bob Saget, comedian and dad Rich Vos, comedian and father of a son who loves me more than him Robert Kelly, and fatherless multi-time abortionist, me, as they talk about what it's like to have and raise a child. We cover such important topics as when to beat your children (Pat and I agree on this one but I probably say to do it more than she says), the hemorrhoids women get during childbirth (I am a mother in this way), and what it's like at Ms. Pat's house with all her lesbo and hetero kids running around. Saget and I had both been over there. I got crushed at spades by her daughter and Bob had narrowly escaped getting beaten up after being mistaken for a banker.  This was recorded live at Skankfest South, the greatest comedy festival on the earthly planet. It is a pure expression of the joy of live comedy. Get tickets to next year's event. I won't be there. Big announcement of how I beat covid during the intro. And stay tuned for the outro where I break down what a jerk Dumbledore was to Harry Potter and how much I wanted to beat on the fans at Universal Studios.  I think this episode finally helped me figure out how to properly do a live episode of Skeptic Tank. It's gonna be a fun, lighthearted topic, and I have to get out of the way of the other comics and just let them go off. Your podcast host is a dork compared to this lady. It was a really fun episode by someone who's willing to share everything without worried about being judged, which is everybody's favorite type of podcast host. I go over the Chappelle/Netflix situation in the intro. Finally, a network executive has put into words that standup comedy is an art form and shouldn't be regulated by anyone. Let's hope this creates a new standard and allows all network execs to follow the amazing lead of Ted Sorandos and just leaves us alone to agitate some while entertaining the people who sign up to be entertained. Everybody else can take your anti-art stance and move into your place alongside the Taliban as they blow up antiquities. Because that's the side they're on. Parents never run it by their kids when they decide to join some cult. They always just sign everybody up for it without even a chance to weigh in. Anyway, it was a funny discussion of one of the world's most interesting sects of Christianity. I guess those snake handlers might have them beat. And the Shakers. Did you know the Shakers let their prepubescent boys practice pulling out on post-menopausal women? Also, they made great furniture. Mat Edgar, Ryan O'Neill, and I talked about our adventure in the woods for the final day of the greatest summer of my life. We found one of the coolest, most remote, wildernessy, beautiful, amazing, relaxing places I've ever stayed at. I wish I could've taken you all with me. But it'd be weird if I did. Mostly because there wouldn't have been enough Raniers to go around. But also the smell of poop would've been overwhelming. Counterpoint, though. Maybe I could've pooped on someone's poop. Either way, I'm taking you there if you close your eyes and use your imagination. This is the way I share my experiences with you. And this was an amazing one. I already want to go back. This summer lasted about 19 months for me this year. So I was sad to see it go. But it also made me remember all the great times I had. The beautiful sunsets I witnessed. My friends from high school look like you should call them sir. I look like a guy you'd find sleeping on your lawn on a weekday. Anyway, Eleanor and Ari talk about our favorite time at the Comedy Store. Back in between when it was famous in the '80s and when it was famous again in the 2010s. It was dark in those tweener years. Dark and vicious. That's when I got to the Store. When nobody in LA gave a fuck about that place. Literally, agents and managers were told by their companies to not go there. Crowds were sparse. Really really sparse. Sometimes we couldn't even get enough customers to start the show. And it was a breeding ground for fun. For wild nights. For mayhem. So come along with Ari and Eleanor. My guest today Nate Bargatze and I are talking about Hollywood, and its pontifical actors who can’t seem to stop gabbing. They give us their opinions constantly, all day long, and most of the time without doing any research or taking the time to educate themselves beforehand. Or it's the self-important cause that they’re shoving in your face. But a lot of people are struggling, and Hollywood just keeps talking down to you. It’s infuriating, and we can’t stand it or them. Us comics, on the other hand, like to stay in our lane. We try to tell jokes, make you laugh. Not telling you how to live or what the deal is with this or that. And Nate does just that. His output & the level that he’s hitting on stage is amazing. He crushes it every time.  An interesting thing about his stand-up, which has nothing to do with his success — is that he’s incredibly clean. But you wouldn’t necessarily notice it unless it’s pointed out. You can’t go wrong with his stuff. You will go wrong with my stuff. You don’t have to pause his specials when your dad walks in. That's 3 specials you can watch with your family, including his new one that is available now!  His brand new special "The Greatest Average American" is available and streaming on Netflix today. #415: Baby Skeletons w/ Adrienne Iapalucci

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 4, 2021 58:55 - or - We’re trying something different this week. I, Ari Shaffir, am bringing you an entire album of one of my favorite comedians in the world. For free. Adrienne Iapalucci has been opening for me for the last couple years. Anyone who saw my Jew hour and thought, “Fuck, that lady was dark” knows what I’m talking about. You know why I refer to her as “The Dark Queen.” And that’s what she is. Standup comedian Adrienne Iapalucci is a cold-blooded dark joke writer. Following her every night forced me to improve my punchlines. I’m not exaggerating. She’s that good. If you saw her open for me, you know I’m right. This pandemic has hit her really hard, though. She was about to start headlining so much that she wasn’t going to be available to me and my crowds any more. And then this virus changed everything. It took away our ability to perform. There’s no more income. She’s seriously looking for day jobs and wondering how she’s going to pay her rent. And now she’s got a new album out called “Baby Skeletons” that she recorded before the pandemic. So here’s what we’re going to try. I’m letting you hear it for free. And I want you to give Adrienne what you think that was worth to you. If I were you, I’d start with $1 before you even listen to it. Because any album is worth that much. But then once you’ve heard it, I think you’ll agree it’s worth a lot more. And I understand that not everybody is in the same financial position as everybody else. So maybe you can only spare $7.00. Or maybe you’re doing great and you can spare a 20 or a 50. You gotta decide for yourself how much you laughed at what took her years to make and how much you want to support comics like this putting out their own material. Show this podcast to your friends and tell them to support her, too. I do this kind of thing for the Edinburgh Comedy Festival. The richer people end up paying more. The poorer people end up paying less. And overall I make enough money to justify me going out there to Scotland for a month. Enough that I can justify going out there. More than I made in a month of road gigs 10 years ago. And more than Adrienne makes now on the road. But the coolest part of it for me was how the poor college kids and the adults with real jobs could all come together to enjoy something they all liked; my degenerate comedy. After the shows, I would stand in the back with a bucket. And people would toss in whatever they had. When I was off, I definitely felt that in the bucket. But no matter what people gave me, it was cool to have them say thank you as they passed, and know that no matter what they put in there, they were putting it in because they wanted to AFTER knowing what they had gotten in terms of the show I put on. So that’s what we’re doing with Adrienne. All the money you Venmo her or Paypal her will go directly to her. If she makes enough, she can use the money to film her next special. Adrienne is an introverted joke writer. And the standup she does end up doing on big platforms gets censored to hell. That Parkland joke was the number one joke of 2018. Most NY comics agreed with that. And they wouldn’t even let her do it on a dirty comedy on Netflix. That’s the state we’re in for standup. If she was as big as Dave Chappelle or Bill Burr it wouldn’t have been a problem. So you guys get to hear it here instead. You gotta make the world into what you want it to be by supporting that vision with your dollars. The Music The Misfits - Last Caress

Maybe we can steal some of each other's.    Here are mine in no order: Read two books Finish writing my book Make a standup special for someone Go to 2 new countries (maybe 3) 100,000 YouTube subscribers 3,000 Patreon subscribers Reach out to comics going through public trouble Remember the great parts of 2020 Please sign up for My Patreon. Not many more till I start my follow up on there to each Skeptic Tank and answer any questions the patrons have about the episode. I get how frustrating I can be with my half finished stories and questions I forgot to ask. This'll be your chance to hold me accountable. And starting today, there's exclusive merch on there available on to the Patrons and nobody else.   Thank you to our sponsor, hammocks. Hammocks are like sleeping on air. They're the most comfortable place to take a nap and they make you look like a boss. Hammocks: for when you want to read only 2 pages of your book before you fall asleep.   The Music Reginald Omas Mamode IV - In Search of Balance I really love this song. Nothing more to say about it. I don't know much about the artist. But at very minimum the guy nailed it at least one time, which most artists never get to.

With the winter approaching, and the threat of lockdowns looming, I decided to leave the country to do some exploring. Ari Shaffir loves to travel. And what a better time than now. It's scary to do, but once I made the decision it became a lot easier. This episode of My 2020 Year In Review podcast breaks down why I decided to hit the road, how I chose where I would go, and what things are like where I went. My first week was scary, just like every time I travel. But then I settled in and figured out all the best places to get food poisoning, how to properly wrap up pooped-on toilet paper for the garbage since you're not allowed to flush it here, and the process of finding weed. This runs all the way through December 31 and the most unique New Year's celebration I've ever taken part in.   Please sign up for my patreon! Bonus content all the time. Plus access to exclusive merch. And early access to some of the podcasts. And the main thing is it helps keep me sane to know that even if I lose all my sponsors, I'll still be ok to keep making the content I find interesting instead of being forced to make things that'll pay my rent.   Thank you to our sponsor, $3 meals. At $3 meals you won't believe how much food they give you for $3. A soup, main course with side and tiny salad, sensible sized desert, and a big fresh fruit juice. It's nuts. You expect it to be like $15-$20 but then when you ask for la cuenta and they hit you with that $6 para dos people you're like, "whaaaaaaaat?" And they're available all over the country. Pretty much any time you get a lunch by the side of the road, that's what you're getting. I love it here.    And our other sponsor, Terrible Internet. With terrible internet, it becomes nearly impossible to plan podcasts. Terrible internet is available all over this country. You don't even have to seek it out. It'll find you. And remember, when your AirBnB host says the internet is "really good." they mean it's really good in relation to the rest of the country, which means it's terrible. And if you get terrible internet, make sure to use promo code: "bang on the desk in anger till your hand breaks every time you lose the signal in the middle of a damn 6th and Jump podcast" for nothing off your order. Terrible Internet; it'll make you appreciate America.   The Music James Brown  - Let’s Make This Christmas Mean Something This Year (Parts 1 and 2) I listened to James Brown's Christmas album on Christmas day in Cuenca. Super underrated album. I had a tree for only the second time in my life. With a mask I burnt on New Year's Eve on top of the tree like it was a star. Stockings behind it. And I was playing cards, drinking a hot cinnamon drink called canelazo, my dog there, hanging out in a town in the Andes. And when that chorus came on talking about "Let's... Make Christmas... Mean something... This year," I just felt so happy. Like, yeah man. I am making it mean something this year. And let's all make it mean something next year, too. How about it?

I almost forgot about the election that saved comedy. Not the presidential election. No, that doesn't really matter. We're still gonna be at war with 7 countries and watch the rich get richer and the poor get poorer regardless of who won that. I'm talking about the Legion of Skanks election. I decided to run for the president of someone else's podcast.   I'm Ari Shaffir, and I stand for Mayhem.   Every week, I would offer a different sacrifice at the alter of comedy. And in return, the gods of laughs rewarded me with the highest office in the land. During this recap, I didn't even remember some of the best stuff that happened. There was way more about this than I remembered while avoiding sheep poop. I forgot making Derosa wait downstairs in the sweaty basement just to get betrayed like a chump when he came upstairs. I forgot getting the best celebrity endorsements and then getting Big Jay's family and Luis's son to endorse me. Dave Smith's jerk of a daughter refused to betray him. I forgot the lie detector. I forgot hosting the debates and my announcement that I'd be running. I think I even forgot that I wore a different suit all 8 times I came on. If you want to watch the recap of the Skanks election, there's a 2 hour video about it here that I'll link to on the YouTube video of this podcast. I'll put a box link to it at the end of the video.   Thank you to our sponsor: Dan Soder. Because of the generous contributions made by the Soder Superpac, I, Ari Shaffir, was able to win the most important election of our lifetime. The Soder Superpac; sponsoring winners in NY and beating up losers in PA since before Jesus.   Please sign up for my Patreon. I'm about 3 days away from having exclusive Tee shirts and other merch up there that will only be available to patrons and nobody else. That's in addition to bonus solo podcasts, occasional riffs with other comics on the topics the patrons submit, and early releases of podcasts.   I'm Ari Shaffir. And I stand, for mayhem.   The Music Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen - No One Tells The President What To Do

In part 4 of My 2020 Year in Review podcast, I talk about returning to New York City. I am standup comedian Ari Shaffir. And I'm only a standup comedian while I'm doing standup comedy. Otherwise, I'm just the internet's greatest yogi. Things in New York were starting to open up again. So I made my return. And what a great decision that was. New York was ALIVE. People were drinking in the streets. All our comedian friends were hanging out. They say crime was up, and if crime includes drug use, then yeah, my crime was WAAAAY up. Molly flowed. Booze flowed. Weed flowed. The cokeheads and the potheads came to terms with each other and met in the middle at the bar. Everybody was happy. And standup was the coolest it's been in decades. Comics were responding to things. Not just doing well written jokes about nothing. Now we had BLM, Covid, the elections, Ellen, and so much more to talk about. It felt important. I loved it! We all gotta figure out a way to hold onto the good parts of this summer when next summer rolls around.   Please subscribe to my Patreon. If you were a member, you could've heard this podcast over a week ago. Plus at there's exclusive merch and bonus podcasts for patreon members only.   Thank you to our sponsor, walktails. It's like a capri sun pouch full of booze. Imagine a pouch of margarita to go. Yeah. And they were available at just about every bar in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Walktails. I didn't invent the word, but I love the word. Eventually they made the bars serve food with them so bars would give you chips or a half a bologna sandwich or even a single tortilla. I barfed outside so many times!   The Music   Pinc Louds - Shake It The Pinc Louds are the spirit of creativity in New York. They are a fake band and they are at the forefront of a movement to steal the city back from the rich and make New York cool again. You should see them live. You can listen online until you get that chance, but once you get that chance, take it. Claudi is a busker. And busker's play. And the Pinc Louds play well. And they play loud. And they bring the party. Get a tall boy and come hang. Check the Pinc Louds instagram to see when they're playing next and then get on a bike and make your way over.

Covid changed a lot for a lot of people. Bezos is killing it more than ever. And whoever owns Purell. But for the rest of us things went off the rails. With the March lockdown looming, standup comedian and yoga guru Ari Shaffir decided to take his dog and go live with his parents out in the suburbs.   In part 3 of my 2020 Year in Review podcast, I talk about living with my parents. My NYC apartment didn't seem like the best place to be forced to stay inside all day. So I left the city I love to have a unique and lovely time with my mom and dad. To get to hang out with your mother and father for that amount of time, as an adult, is an experience I'll never get to have again and I'm eternally thankful to that bat dude in China for making it happen.   My dog loved it, too. All she did all day was figure out ways to escape the yard and run into the woods to chase deer. While my friends were busy signing hundred million dollar deals, I was busy nailing mesh fencing to trees. Wouldn't trade places. And I pondered that every afternoon, drinking wine on the deck while watching the sunset with my mom.   Please sign up for my for bonus content. You coulda heard this episode a week ago if you were on there. Plus exlusive merch offers and patreon-only podcasts.   Thank you to our sponsor, rosay. Rosay. For when you're too old to party but you still want to catch a buzz in the burbs, think rosay. It's the wine you're afraid to admit you love.   And our other sponsor, Outfield Fencing. When you want to keep your dog in the yard until the moment you go inside for 2 freaking minutes to go pee, think outfield fencing. It's strong, totally destructible if your dog chews on it a little bit or a deer runs into it, and easy to run under. Outfield fencing. It's really just for baseball.   The Music Big Freedia - Rona Rona   If you don't know Big Freedia, you're missing out. You can pretty much play any 10 of her songs in a row and you've got an instant dance party. She's the queen of bounce, the diva of dance, the shake it up shaman, and the party princess. Go look her up. Tell her to come on the podcast to talk about the history of New Orleans Bounce.

Troll of the Year. On part 2 of My 2020 Year in Review podcast I talk about how I brought a city to its knees. With a few expertly timed and crafted words I made Los Angeles crumble. It was hilarious. Even the comedy world wasn’t immune from my power. While most standups laughed and were tremendously supportive, a few comedians fell to my power. Some who had previously held that jokes were always just jokes, for the first time in their lives took the side of the censors. They had never been so expertly triggered before and they lost their minds. And we all laughed at them. It was one my greatest trolls, if not my greatest. It made hypocrites out of the mighty and showed the world how much they overvalued the lives of celebrities. Their anger was my applause. Their threats of violence were my standing ovation. I am God. It's time for my annual Year In Review podcast. This ain't about what happened in the world. This is about what happened in the world of the greatest living athlete, Ari Shaffir. It was a wild one. Full of ups and downs syndromes. 2019 had more twists than a, than a, I don't know. Than a really twisty thing. It was such a long one I decided to cut it up into 7 parts. John Dennehy came over to talk to me about Ecuador. Specifically about the 2005 People's Revolution that toppled their government. John was there for all of it. He even helped set up road blocks during the protests. Really interesting stuff that seems kind of extra relevant this week, huh? He also told me hella stuff about Ecuador. From the food, to the roads, to the customs, to the crazy obsession with 2 dollar bills. It was a crash course in a country that I desperately needed a crash course on. It's useful and interesting stuff about an amazing paisa.  John wrote a book that I just finished reading called "Illegal." It's about being deported, about illegally crossing back over that border again and again, about love, about my balls, about standing up for what you believe in, and it's about following your heart. There's a ton of ideology hidden inside the plot that had me thinking about stuff all week after reading what he wrote.  Pick up "Illegal" by John Dennehy at Good Reads or at Amazon. And if you read it, tell him you read it because of this podcast and he'll tell all his friends at the UN what a powerful interviewer I am.    The Music Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - This Land Is Your Land Simon and Garfunkle - The Only Living Boy in New York Gil Scott Herron - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised RoCola Bacalao - Guayaquil City Outkast - Bombs over Baghdad

Tim Dillon got together with me to help me understand wealthy people. They're not like you and I. Sometimes I hate them and sometimes I am in awe of them. Tim broke down all the reasons they suck, and also all the reasons the poor aren't much better. Tim Dillon always has great insights into stuff like this. And he's been obsessed with the super wealthy since I've met him. Joe List joined me for the introduction and outro to speak a little on the same subject and then we took some calls from people who left messages about what it means to be rich or to be poor.
