Diego Hernandez started Diego's Chocolate at Lake Atitlan in Guatemala in 1990. Diego and his family are of Tz'utujil Mayan heritage, and he adapted his abuela's sipping chocolate recipe into a unique format—rolls of untempered chocolate, often made with unique inclusions. All of the cacao and inclusions are grown in Guatemala. In this episode, we talk with Nico Silverman, Diego's U.S. representative. We talk about Diego's story, the details of their chocolate, and Nico's experiences with pairing Diego's Chocolate rolls with craft beer and craft cider in New York state.Listen to the end of the episode for an exclusive discount code for 20% everything on the Diego's shop! You can learn more about Diego's on their website and follow them on Instagram. You can also learn more about Wolf Hollow Brewing, Dancing Grain Farm Brewery, and Nine Pin Ciders.Guest:Nico Silverman—While employed at Etsy.com in 2012, Nico stumbled into the world of craft chocolate and discovered Diego's unique chocolate rolls, a revelation that changed his trajectory. Drawing from a background in nonprofit development and project management, he saw an opportunity to create meaningful impact through ethical commerce. Since then, he has brought Diego's Chocolate to thousands of consumers across North America while creating jobs in Guatemala where each roll is handcrafted and packaged. His work bridges traditional Mayan chocolate-making with conscious consumers, preserving ancestral practices while building economic opportunities for artisan and farming communities. We're in the Central American country to hear a tale of two lakes. One, Lake Amatitlan, is badly polluted and there's concerns that the other – Lake Atitlan - once nominated as one of the seven new wonders of the world and - is in danger of going that way too. We hear about the costs needed to clean up these important tourist attractions, and hear about the loss of income for local businesses. From there, we dive into the world of cacao as Shadi shares insights on this gentle yet profound plant medicine and its role in emotional processing. Our conversation then heats up as we discuss the power of ritual, especially fire rituals, before diving into the juicy world of conscious kink. This week on Everything You Didn't Know About Herbalism, we are sharing an awakening conversation surrounding the intersection of herbalism and grief with the author, educator, non-profit leader, and environmental advocate, Emily Ruff. Driven by her profound dedication and compassion, Emily sits down with us to dissect the individual and collective impact that environmental grief has on our communities, and how redefining its influence may play a key role in re-establishing a symbiotic relationship with our planet. We'll explore how this can be accomplished by leaning on our plant allies in times of loss, which will not only provide us with the medicinal value of a botanical but also strengthen our gratitude for the gifts nature provides us. In turn, this strengthened connection allows us to join the planet on its journey toward healing, hand-in-hand. In Emily's words, "Working with herbs for grief does not erase the causes of grief or the need for us to continue working towards collective liberation and justice, but hopefully, it gives us more fortitude and resilience to be able to do that."

TIMESTAMPS (12:52) Gypsy Rose net worth/ Profiting off of crime (17:04) Rex Heuermann Update (23:00) Nancy Ng Californian woman Nancy Ng loved traveling to Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. She attended a yoga retreat there in 2022 and planned another one for October 2023. Her sister Nicky said “She was saying it's so beautiful. Last year, she woke up every morning just to spend some time there by herself without the group and this year was going to be more exciting because they had planned activities on the lake.” When Nancy arrived in Guatemala, she sent a text to her family before putting her phone into airplane mode. “I'll be safe, don't worry about me,” Nancy and the other retreat attendees went kayaking on Lake Atitlan on October 19. Nancy was seen smiling and waving in footage from that morning. What happened next is unclear, as there was only one other person kayaking with Nancy. That person is an attorney from California, named Christina Blazek. Christina said that Nancy wanted to swim in the lake and she jumped out of her kayak, despite warnings about the rough conditions from Christina. Nancy apparently disappeared under the water and did not resurface. Christina made it to shore and a search started for Nancy. When Guatemalan authorities went to interview the retreat attendees the day after Nancy vanished, they were all said to have left the country. In this episode of the True Crune Society Podcast, we discuss the disappearance of Nancy Ng. Accident or foul play? As of January 2024, Nancy remains missing. In this week's episode, we reflect on the role both joy and sorrow simultaneously play in our lives. We chat about how pressing into grief allows us to more fully experience joy, and how when we try to numb ourselves to the sorrow we also numb ourselves to the experience of joy. We also talk about the importance of naming disappointments, intentionally maturing in our faith, and what we have personally learned while grieving the loss of a parent. When we learn to suffer well and meet God in the midst of our sufferings, we can reach a deep joy we never thought possible. Heather's One Thing - Attending and speaking at SEEK ‘24. Am I more prone to pushing my emotions aside or letting my emotions rule my life (emotional gluttony)? In seasons of grief, who are the people who have been my midwives and accompanied me through those seasons? Discussion Questions: What disappointments have you experienced this past year? Is it hard for you to be honest with God about those disappointments? What is God redeeming and restoring in your life? In a current disappointment or heartbreak you are feeling, what gratitude are you experiencing alongside it? What gifts of daily bread is the Lord providing for you in this season? Quote to Ponder: “Our life is a short time in expectation, a time in which sadness and joy kiss each other at every moment. There is a quality of sadness that pervades all the moments of our lives. It seems that there is no such thing as a clear-cut pure joy, but that even in the most happy moments of our existence we sense a tinge of sadness. In every satisfaction, there is an awareness of limitations. In every success, there is the fear of jealousy. Behind every smile, there is a tear. In every embrace, there is loneliness. In every friendship, distance. And in all forms of light, there is the knowledge of surrounding darkness . . . But this intimate experience in which every bit of life is touched by a bit of death can point us beyond the limits of our existence. It can do so by making us look forward in expectation to the day when our hearts will be filled with perfect joy, a joy that no one shall take away from us.” (Henri J.M. Nouwen, Making All Things New: An Invitation to the Spiritual Life) Scripture for Lectio: He turns my mourning into dancing. You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, so that my soul may praise you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever. Hint: It's Not What You ThinkWhile I was in Lake Atitlan Guatemala I had the lesson reinforced that literally anything we want in life is possible and that it really only takes two simple things. The lake is surrounded by many small and modest villages along with some of the most spectacular resorts and villas that can rival anywhere in the world. That might not sound so special until you hear about HOW these posh places to stay are constructed.Lake Atitlan is surrounded by volcanos, which makes most of the lake-side property very very steep. This results in most of the land only being accessible by boat and after that human power. No trucks, no heavy machinery, not even animal assistance (animals are too big). That means everything to build and maintain these structures is all humans carried often up a very very steep hillside.Often we think that if something doesn't come easy or fast then we must be doing it wrong or it's not for us. If these gorgeous places can be built under these conditions then surely we can create anything we want in our life. What does it take to create what we want? It's not what you think. It's not money. It's not certifications. It's not know-how. It's not luck. Those can all come and go and can be acquired or borrowed. What's required and what can't come from anywhere else but inside of you are these two simple things:Vision and CommitmentIf you have no vision, then there isn't even anywhere to go, so direction to start out on.If you have no commitment then when the road becomes steep or the weather changes, you'll stop, turn around, or give up entirely. When you have Vision AND Commitment then anything is possible and it's only a matter of time before it becomes a reality. If you're not sure what your vision is then my best-selling book "Engineered to Love" (now available on audiobook) https://a.co/d/inqi2Kk is a great place to start. Remember, perspective can cause two people to look at the same thing and see two totally different things. (英语访谈8:13开始)How was the Guatemala trip?Lily: Yeah. So I also just mentioned, you also mentioned that you were quite sick, almost like most of your trip in Guatemala. So how was the trip Guatemala for you now you are back home for almost a month now, right? Bella: Yeah, I've been back for a while. I wanted to go to Guatemala cause I went there in college for a study abroad and it changed my life. It was such a positive experience. But this time I went by myself first time traveling alone. I've traveled alone but on retreats to meet up with groups. But I was solo the whole time. First day I got there I got sick food poisoning or I might have accidentally had tap water. Who knows, maybe the ice throwing up. Lily: It is the welcome of Guatemala, everybody has to be sick. I had a goodbye gift the first time I was here. I had a goodbye gift, which I was having food poisoning on the last day. Bella: Oh my God. Apparently a nasty one. Oh no, you've been there before. Lily: I was in Guatemala six, six years ago. Bella: Oh my God, how interesting. And I went 10 years ago. It's funny how it brings people back. Lily: Yeah, definitely. Bella: It's also Lake Atitlan where we were is also known to be a vortex if you've heard. Lily: And you told me that. Yeah, I like that idea. Bella: Well I felt like it is because the energy felt very intense. I was feeling everything at a higher level, more strongly, more intensely. And I think that that's part of me getting sick. I think I was releasing something. I needed to purge some energy that was trapped in me because despite getting sick and having such a hard time, I did feel like a new person after the trip. Lily: Amazing. You did the perfect advertising there. Bella: . Yeah, sometimes we need to learn lessons hard in harder ways. Sometimes they're more valuable that way when we learn them through going through something because I feel much stronger after having that experience because I feel like I can survive anything now. Because being alone in a place where there's not a lot of people, there aren't many stores. I was on a very small, small village away from Lily: Santa Cruz. Bella: Santa Cruz, yes. And there were no markets. Everything closed at five. There was no one at my Airbnb. It was the off season. So there weren't a lot of travelers and I was dying. It happened three times I got sick and finally I just said, I'm gonna go home. But I do, I felt like I survived some epic challenge or I just went through Survivor being on that show. Lily: . Wow, nice. So how's the life back since you got back to Los Angeles? You said that it was a lot of energy here, but is it changed since you got back? Bella: Well, something interesting happened and it's the same thing that happened the last time I visited Guatemala. I came back with this new appreciation for life and for all of the amenities and conveniences that we have in a city like Los Angeles that you often take for granted. Because when you go off to a small village in a third world country and you see how other people live, it really puts things into perspective. And when I went 10 years ago, I had never really left the country. I had never been to a third world country. I was just in LA and I thought that's what the whole world was. I was in college at the time, I had a very, my mind wasn't as open. And then everything changed, everything shifted. I became so much more grateful, appreciated things that I had. I didn't take things for granted. But so many years had passed by so you kind of forget the lessons, you start taking things for granted again. And then I went back and cuz I remember just not wanting to be in LA, not liking it, wanting to get out. When I got back, I saw it in a new light and I appreciated it more. I don't know if I'm gonna spend my whole life in LA, but I definitely saw it in a new light and appreciated every little thing. Not that Guatemala is not great because of the food, the people, the culture is amazing, but it's a very poor country. And when you see how other people live, you really appreciate everything that you have. So it was amazing to go back. Lily: That's so true. Actually, six years years ago, six years ago I was here. I was brokenhearted because I just got cheated by my husband and I just wanted to do something that makes me feel good. And I was here building a bottle school with 25 people from all over the world. I was thinking that I was giving, but actually I feel like the people here was giving me, instead, I thought I was doing the good things for the community. But instead it's like the people they are, they give me a new perspective of life. And I was just like, oh, so appreciative. They don't have cell phone. And then they are like, don't make lots of money. They don't make money at all. And then they are happy. So just give me a new perspective. And then I didn't speak any Spanish, but that trip inspired me to learn Spanish. So now this time I'm back here is actually, I want to improve my Spanish and now I can speak more, communicate with the people here. I feel really appreciative. And just like you said, how a trip can really change you. Bella: Yeah, exactly. I'm glad you had such a similar experience. I think everybody in the world needs to experience that. I remember the first time I came back, I couldn't stop talking about how I went into a house and they didn't have a floor. They lived with a dirt floor. And it is just such a small thing that you overlook every single day, like a floor. And some people just don't have it. They have dirt. More common than we think because we're not told this on a daily basis. It's not like we turn on the news and it shows all the poor people in the world that are struggling that and it's because of the corruption in their governments and things like that. We don't know what's really going on in the world. But when you go out and see it face to face, then it's really clicks and you realize how blessed you are. 单词记忆:1. retreats 度假静修(瑜珈、冥想)2. food poisoning 食物中毒3. vortex 涡轮4. intense 激烈的5. survive 存活下6. epic 如史诗般7. take for granted 将...视为理所当然8. put things into perspective 用正确的观点看事情9. cheat 欺骗 get cheated by 被骗 cheat on 出轨10. appreciative 感恩的 appreciate 感激11. dirt floor 土的地板12. corruption 贪污腐败Bella 她的IG是:https://www.instagram.com/astrobellaluna/Email: Astrobellaluna@gmail.comLily的网站和Girls Only社群:https://flywithlily.com/join
Nothing more exciting than meeting new people, hearing their stories, and being inspired. (访谈7:00开始)Lily: Hello. You're listening to Fly with Lily. Now I'm sitting here with Bella, my friend. Actually I met her quite unexpectedly in Guatemala during these day. I'm still in San Pedro. She left. She left me here but I just find her quite special. At first when I met her it was the feeling of starstruck, if you know what I mean, is like, oh I'm meeting a movie star. Because my friend Brian was introducing her before I met her and I was just like, oh, I'm quite nervous about meeting her. And finally I met her. She's really friendly, a little bit goofy and I really like her, although she left me, but I just think she's amazing woman doing what she loves and she's helping a lot of people with her skill, which we are going to talk about a little bit. So now I'm going to bring her here and then to interview from her point of view. So Bella, how do we meet? Exactly. And then what was the first meeting? What was the first impression?你好。你正在听 Fly with Lily。 Bella: Hi Lily. Well, first of all, I was very excited to meet you because I love your energy and I felt like we were kindred spirits. Maybe we live together in a past life as sisters or something . But it was an instant connection and it was a very interesting way that we met because I actually met your roommate who was also your “hermano” which is you called your brother. (Hermano这里是西语指弟兄的意思)Lily: Yeah, my brother from another mother. Bella: You guys were a little “la familia” there. We met because I had met Brian the day before at a dance party in the jungle. And it was a very interesting to say the least type of dance party. It was a little creepy. Go outright and say . It was, I'm a very spiritual person. I go to a lot of these spiritual events. But this one in particular, the vibes were very off and they were making us do some weird things called contact dance where we had to touch each other and stare into each other's eyes with strangers. And some of the people there were a little off, a little weird and I did not wanna stare into their eyes. But I did it for a minute and then I walked away and I was like, this is not for me. I'm not touching these people.I don't wanna do this. And Brian was there and he was actually the most normal one at the party. So he kind of sat with me and made me feel better. And he offered to walk me back down to the dock because you have to take a boat to go everywhere in Lake Atitlan. So I walked with Brian and we really connected. He, he's a really awesome guy. He's a great dancer and we had so much fun and we just had this instant connection and I knew he was gonna be a long time friend right off the bat. And he was kind of my hero that night because I felt like I was in this strange country, this country very far away from home by myself. Didn't really know the language, didn't know anyone. It was my first time doing something like that and I felt like Brian came in an angel to rescue me from this weird party that I of course ended up at because I'm quite adventurous. But I've been lucky. I feel like I always have guardian angels around me and I think Brian was one of them. Lily: And he definitely has to listen to this one. Bella: Yeah, we'll force him to . But yeah. And then he brought me over to your guys' “casa”, which was you guys were staying with this awesome Guatemala family. And I think I was having a rough day because I was sick for half the time that I was there. My computer broke the first day that I was there and you were so kind and so friendly and you offered to take my computer to the computer shop cuz it was closed that day and I just felt like I could instantly trust you. So I left you my computer and then we had an amazing lunch with the family you were staying at. That was one of my favorite days in Guatemala because it was so authentic. It was so real. We got to connect with the locals, the indigenous people speak their language, eat their food, and it was really special. Lily: They were starstruck as well. Bella: Oh right, you guys! So you're so funny. I had showed Brian some clips of some TV show that I did called Jane the Virgin. And that was just like a funny show. 那是一个有趣的电视剧,Lily: I watched that. Bella: Yeah. So I did that. I, I've been acting on and off my whole life and did some film and did some television in here in LA theater my whole life. Commercials a bunch of stuff. But yeah, I never think of myself as famous or anything like that. But your reaction… Lily: When you are talking about yourself like that, I feel like wow. Such a pleasure to have you on my show. Oh my god. It's like I finally invited Brad Pitt to my show. That kind of feeling. Bella: The pleasure's all mine. Honestly. It is amazing! 10. What's up to my quintessential quetzals and meritorious margays! Welcome to the BNP beloved listeners and thanks so much for tuning in. This episode I'm joined by my good friend, hermano de otra madre, and traveling compatriot Jonathan Glowacki to discuss, reminisce and digest our recent travails thru the magnificent country of Guatemala. This episode is momentous for several reasons, not the least of which is that it features the BNP's first ever Saunacast, where Jonathan and I record a deeply psychedelic segment during the 4th round of a serious sauna sesh at over 200° F (94° C). My trusty moderately intelligent rare earth device lasted about 10 minutes before succumbing to the heat and abruptly cutting off the segment. Still, it's a vibe. Jonathan then tells the harrowing tale of his highly unregulated, nearly fatal motorcycle tour thru the dusty roads and precipitous cliffs of the Guatemalan highlands, and that reminiscence leads to a discussion of what makes Guatemalan society hit so different from life in the empire. Two differences in societal approach really stand out: approaches to mitigating (or rather NOT mitigating) risk, and the lack of slavish adherence to this demonic thing we empire babies call "convenience." Convenience for convenience's sake is a curse, not a blessing, and spending time in a place like Guatemala really drives this home. We also chat about the wild (also highly unregulated- do you detect a pattern) DIY boat rides between the pueblos nestled on the shore of Lake Atitlan, active volcanoes popping off outside Antigua, military controlled neighborhoods in Guatemala City and much more.So fire up your baby jeeter, pop open a monkfruit sweetened grape soda (or whatever the f***), kick up your toes and enjoy the ride! Please keep your mind and thoughts decidedly *outside* the carriage while the audio ride is in motion. Welcome to Guatemala. Living among their culture is quite an experience, and it is also fascinating to watch as they interact with the modern world. From a weather perspective, Guatemala is just a fantastic place to live, it's called the land of Eternal Spring. The climate is perfect for those who love the outdoors, and there are plenty of activities to keep you busy. Whether you enjoy hiking, biking, or simply spending time in nature, you'll find that Guatemala has something to offer. In addition to its great weather, Guatemala also boasts a rich cultural heritage. Every year thousands of people come to experience its beauty for themselves. Lake Atitlan Guatemala is more than three miles long and up to a mile wide, with depths reaching over 1,000 feet and incredibly clear. Its shores are dotted with small villages, and its waters are home to many different kinds of fish. Lake Atitlan Guatemala is also a popular spot for kayaking, fishing, hiking, swimming, and thanks to Marshall, stand up paddleboarding, through his company Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Atitlan. Lake Atitlan Guatemala is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. But it's not just the scenery that makes the beautiful Lake Atitlan Guatemala special. Lake Atitlan Guatemala is also home to a wide variety of wildlife, including rare species of fish, birds, and reptiles. In addition, the lake is an important cultural center for the Maya people. For centuries, the Maya have been drawn to Lake Atitlan for its spiritual power. Even today, many Maya pilgrims make the journey to the lake to offer prayers and sacrifices to the Gods. With its natural beauty and rich history, it's no wonder that the beautiful Lake Atitlan Guatemala is considered one of the seven wonders of Guatemala. https://arewehomeyetpodcast.com/standup-paddleboard-lake-atitlan-guatemala/ (If you want to know more insider knowledge about living in Lake Atitlan Guatemala and stand up paddleboarding, click this link to tune in to episode 29 of the Are We Home Yet podcast and hear more from Marshall!) https://are-we-home-yet.captivate.fm/listen (Subscribe, Download, Share, Rate, Review the podcast!) This book provides you means and methods for accessing expanded or higher states of consciousness. It gives you a plan on using these experiences to awaken to yourself as consciousness, to help you profoundly heal, and to self-realize. You will then live in innate presence and subsequently transform your life.I discovered ancient priesthood ritual methods for accessing expanded states of consciousness while researching the archaeology of the Sun god religions of Egypt, India, and Central and South America. Ritual Meditation and Transcendental Self-Inquiry methods, derived from these discoveries, will help you know yourself as consciousness within and beyond objective reality. You will find this book useful if you already meditate and know profound spiritual and healing experiences are possible—but don't know how. You already understand that magic mushrooms can dramatically improve the symptoms and quality of life for people with an array of psychoemotional issues relating to death anxiety, depression, anxiety, chemical addictions, post-traumatic stress, and difficult emotions resulting from early life abuse—but don't know how to use them. If you're a hobby archaeologists looking for objective answers to our ancient enigmatic past then you will witness some unique archaeological discoveries in reading this book.Go on, put me in your basket, read me, then practice with humility, and i guarantee you that you will transform your life and what happens after you die.orn in the UK and raised in New Zealand, Carlton has led an interesting, eclectic, adventurous, and purposeful life-a road less travelled. Carlton is a veterinarian, biotech entrepreneur, vaccine innovator, hobby archaeologist, and researcher, as well as the author of Discovering Ritual Meditation: Transcendental Healing and Self-Realization. His lifetime fascination with pyramid archaeology and cultures, ancient priesthood ritual knowledge, lost civilizations, and humankind's history through the Holocene is augmented by his research into the science of altered states of consciousness. More recently, his interests have expanded to understanding the story lurking behind global climate change. Carlton lives in Guatemala, his spiritual home, overlooking the beautiful Lake Atitlan. Carlton earned an MBA from the London Business School (1997) and was the founding CEO of Immune Targeting Systems Ltd. (2003-12), which was acquired by Altimmune Inc. During his CEO tenure, Carlton raised GBP23 million of investment funding, codeveloped a biotechnology company and vaccine technology de novo, and led a team that successfully validated novel vaccine solutions for mutating viruses (pandemic flu, Hepatitis-B), thus addressing a multi-decade industry and technology bottleneck (vaccines promoting cellular immunity). Carlton stepped down as CEO in 2012 to pursue his career as an author.

This interview episode features Anna, a scenic artist in the film industry, and certified yoga teacher. Anna grew up in Los Angeles, and now she lives seasonally and nomadically -- from Brooklyn, NY, to Palm Springs, CA, and all over the world. In this interview, we covered:Helping our nervous system recover after long periods of stress; How Anna and I met in Peru, and first started working with sacred plant medicines; Her experience of what an Ayahuasca ceremony looks like;Nature as the ultimate teacher, and the wisdom of our bodies;Making offerings, and the importance of intention;Fear of the unknown, and the magic of stepping into it anyway;Respect for sacred plants and tradition, and coming to this work with an attitude of reverence, surrender, and an open mind; The vibrant energy of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, and the ancient wisdom of the Sacred Valley, Peru;Anna's journey traveling all over Europe on a motorcycle, camping by tent along the way;Creating a sacred space for yourself, wherever you are;How the foods we eat can affect our energy levels; ...and more. As a disclaimer, we are absolutely not experts on Ayahuasca or sacred plants. This is simply a discussion among friends, sharing our own personal experiences. If this is something you are curious about, I encourage you to find true experts on these plants, most of whom are indigenous peoples who have been working with these plants and medicines and traditions for many generations. We are simply scratching the surface here, and of course, this episode is no substitute for doing your own research.Anna is a dear friend who listens to her body and her heart, and trusts that her intuition will continue to guide her towards the experiences and places that she needs in order to keep growing and evolving. In this episode, we conclude in our Lenten series as we journey through Sister Miriam's book Restore. It's not too late to join us! You can find your copy today at Ave Maria Press. We discuss entering into the paschal mystery with our whole hearts. We chat about the different characters of the Passion - Judas, Mary of Bethany, Peter - and how we can experience God's extravagant love through the Holy Week liturgies. We pray that you would be open to the Holy Spirit, carry the light burden of sacrifice this week, and experience the resurrection power of Jesus! Sister Miriam's one thing - Soaking in His Presence - William Augusto Bethel Heather's one thing - The Life on Purpose Series by Alpha Michelle's one thing - The Gift of Brother Priests Discussion Questions: What stood out to you from this week's episode? What traditions have been helpful to your family to enter into Holy Week and prepare for Easter? How can we make this week different, entering into the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus? As we celebrate Easter, how will you live the reality of resurrection power in your daily life? As we prepare for Pentecost, how can you allow the Lord to use you by being more open and receptive to the Holy Spirit? Journal Questions: Research the Holy Week liturgies at your local parish. Ask Jesus how He wants you to experience one of the extraordinary liturgies this week. Read Matthew 26:6-13. Put yourself in the scene as Mary of Bethany and take time to imagine what it smells like, what it feels like, and how Jesus looks at you. What does Jesus want to reveal to you through this? Read Matthew 26: 69-75. Imagine yourself as Peter and allow Jesus to see you even in your betrayals. What does Jesus want to say to you through this? Quotes to Ponder: “He will provide the way and the means, such as you could never have imagined. Leave it all to Him, let go of yourself, lose yourself on the Cross, and you will find yourself entirely.” - St. Catherine of Siena Scripture for Lectio Divina: “Hosanna to the Son of David, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” -Matthew 21:9 This episode is sponsored by Pilgrimage to Beauty. In this ongoing series on building strong communities, we've already taken a look at the buildings and infrastructure that are more conducive to regenerative living and connected populations, but I want to return to a broader range of contexts and applications from around the world in this episode. Much like the first session from this series with Zach Weiss in which he profiled amazing examples from across the globe of communities who have come together to achieve incredible transformations of their ecosystems through landscape hydrology restoration, there are so many case studies to draw from.In my own travels I've witnessed inspiring groups of people who've overcome massive disadvantages such as lack of access to materials, funds, and antagonistic governments by banding together in their common vision of a better life and future. Some of the most notable projects I remember from an earlier stage in my work when I designed and built natural homes. There were technical skill training programs for single mothers and disadvantaged youths to give them higher wage job opportunities when I lived on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. A few of the graduates of that program worked side by side with me on natural building projects and ran restaurants that I frequented. In that same area I worked with a clinic that also had a low cost home building program which worked with the residents around them to identify the most vulnerable people living there to build stable housing for. In Senegal my Dutch clients worked with their local fishing community to create communal meeting spaces near the dilapidated fishing docks and establish a fresh food market run by women at the entrance of the town. Here in Spain I've visited a hotel and ranch that are working with local authorities to manage the forests in their area to reduce fire risk by harvesting discarded wood to turn into mushroom substrate, an enterprise that also works with at-risk youth from Barcelona to give vocational training and has also hired from that group. So many of my collaborators and clients from around the world have exemplified community collaboration and outreach and I've often wondered if there's a playbook that one could access to begin the nuanced process of bringing people together to work towards common goals.Luckily, the new book by Dr James Gruber called Building Community: Twelve Principles for a Healthy Future does exactly that, and I reached out to the author (who prefers to go by Jim) to get his take on the steps in this process. The book profiles tons of exceptional examples of community projects from around the world. Some of which Jim has studied and others of which he was involved with directly and helped to facilitate in his role as a community consultant. In this interview we talk about some of the important considerations when first approaching a community based project. Jim outlines many of the key steps that nearly all of the case studies he's seen have in common and are not to be skipped if long term success is what you're after, and he shares inspiring anecdotes from his facilitation role and observations of this process unfolding organically in different places. He also gives insight into his toolbox of leadership strategies meant to guide newcomers of community development to help ensure that your project gets started on the right foot. Oh and a quick bonus for those of you who really want to dive deeper into community building, my good friends at New Society who published this book are offering a giveaway for listeners of this show. Just stick around till the end of this episode where I'll tell you just how you can get a free copy of Building Community for yourself. A little disclaimer, I had a short delay on my side of the connection in the beginning of this interview so you'll hear me clumsily interrupt Jim a few times at the start. Luckily it doesn't last for too long.
