Any student of Scripture - whether a scholar, minister, or layperson - is like a craftsman with his or her tools. Have you ever walked into the workshop of a craftsman (an artist, carpenter, mechanic, or musician) and wondered, "what do all these tools or instruments do"? In this workshop, we will practice how to read Scripture with "tools" that engage the head, heart, and hands. We will engage historical and literary questions, and we will learn how to read the Bible as an act of worship, with the posture of faith seeking understanding. Learning how to study the Bible as the word of God will establish a great foundation for whatever vocation you may be called to. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Quit something. Create margin. Be challenged toward unselfishness. Make space to care for others well. Say yes or no intentionally instead of out of guilt or exhaustion. Practice attentiveness.Does any of that tug at your heart? In this workshop we'll dig into the Biblical roots and calling of the discipline of restraint. More than just saying "no"; restraint is a counter-cultural and holistic discipline. Come explore how restraint is necessary to love others well (one of the core callings of Christianity) and cultivate meaningful community. Come grasp a vision for how restraint lived out in different areas of your life might help you make clearer choices with less anxiety. Come learn how doing less might actually help you do it better. When I was a youth pastor, I once watched a student throw all his “secular” music into a river. I remember feeling conflicted about it. Did following Jesus really mean the replacement of everything he had previously loved? Is that how Christians are meant to relate to culture? This session offers an alternative, non-anxious approach to cultural engagement, one that is attentive to the hunger for meaning, beauty, and justice, and governed by gospel virtues of faith, love, and hope. Our lives are mediated by technology—jobs, relationships, and spiritual lives can all be conducted via screen. And it's hard to imagine life any other way. Try as we might, few of us will be going back to the 19th century any time soon...nor might we want to.But for all its benefits, tech can easily take over; its promises of an easy life can take away our abilities to attend, consider, and love. And in a world of algorithms that target our subconscious, it's ever harder to make conscious choices towards virtue. With help from sources both new and ancient, we'll consider what it means to be human in a world of devices—and simple, practical actions for a tech-wise life.—Download the FREE companion guide to this workshop at www.jubileeconference.com/livingjubilee! All people are created in God's image and no life is beyond God's reach. Through Jesus' trial, execution, and resurrection, we have all been offered hope and a new purpose for life. This amazing awakening of hope and life purpose allows those who once broke the law to be transformed, replacing the cycle of crime with a cycle of renewal. Prisoners often face many injustices before, during, and after incarceration. As Christians, we must learn how to respond and take a stand for justice that restores. Social work is hard. Social workers need to be equipped with tools to go into a field filled with trauma, hurt, and oppressive systems.Jesus didn't come to encourage people to take bubble baths in an effort of self-care. He came so that we would "not be conformed to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our mind."During this workshop, dissect the lies that are often fed to helpers, and take a dive into several scripture verses that can help us think about social work in a way that sets us up for success. We have more texts to read and more media for writing than at any other point in human history, and yet we struggle more than ever to understand and persuade one another. At the center of this tension is our epistemological crisis--a crisis of meaning and truth that has profound political, social, and theological implications. The challenge for contemporary Christians is how to effectively write and speak the truth when everyone is skeptical, cynical, and ironic. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Every year, the sports industry brings in billions of dollars, and nearly 75% of youth in America participate in at least one sport. This past year, we've seen sports go through major shifts as COVID-19 forced changes in sports patterns and the intersection between sports and activism came fully into the spotlight. But where do sports intersect with the Kingdom of God? And what does it look like to glorify God through sports? Even though Patricia had zero experience in athletics growing up, she shares about how her unlikely career in sports marketing has opened her eyes to the power of sports. We often think of vocation as connected to “job” or “career,” and while that is one part of God's call on our lives, we are invited to respond in a much broader manner. This workshop will include both a personal story of a call to education as a career, along with discussion of the common call to all of us to be perpetual students and perpetual educators. God calls us to keep learning and to keep “passing it on.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Can your faith in Jesus Christ really make you a better engineer? Absolutely! And a better doctor, business leader, teacher, mechanic, restaurant worker—or whatever is your day job. But your faith doesn't impact your vocation automatically. You have to understand how your faith works in the workplace. Just like education and training in your college major, it takes learning, practice, and intentionality to let your faith in Jesus be the thing that navigates you through your career. In this workshop, we will talk about how a career that is built on the foundation of Jesus Christ and God's Word will bring you peace, joy, and excitement, no matter what career field you choose. It's not rocket science! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
COVID-19 challenged us to reveal what we really believe in, and it changed life away from normal in a way that continues to this day. Trusting God in the face of so much uncertainty requires faith in every area of life and in all kinds of vocations, including laboratory research. Join Ben McFarland, a professor in biochemistry and structural immunology at a Christian university, as he looks back on how God's nature and faithfulness showed itself through the consistent science of viruses and health, even during this difficult and inconsistent year.As the classroom and laboratory moved to a computer screen through remote learning, my students and I learned new things about the virus through research into its evolution. This research came from a conviction that God made the world in a way that we can take it apart and, by God's grace, put it back together again with medicine and vaccines. The students who took part in this process created new knowledge that let us understand more about this virus. God gave us hope and healing, even in unprecedented times, through careful, humble science. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Jesus healed people. Paul was healed as part of his conversion to Christianity. And the whole arc of the gospel is that God is healing and redeeming the world. It is no mistake that in Genesis, God completes his creation by breathing life into a body—our bodies—and therefore, our health matters to God.So where do we fit into God's story as future healers and healthcare workers? Is there anything unique about working for the health of others as a Christian? In this session, we will explore these questions and more, focusing on health justice and equity, rest and boundaries in healthcare, when medical ethics meet Christian ethics, health systems versus health care, and being a faithful steward of your training and education. Whether you are an aspiring nurse, physician, midwife, pharmacist, physical therapist, or any other member of the healthcare team, or are unsure but asking any of the questions above, you are welcome. As a society, we have never been more cynical, or more hopeful. We seem to want to escape the world and transform it—all at once. We've shifted our trust away from most institutions and leaders. While our main issues are not our identity, our identity is usually our main issue. In this sports-crazed, fame-and-fortune, clout-driven, name-dropping society, we all desire to be known, loved, embraced, and accepted…especially athletes. Big games, large crowds, loud screams, air time, and name recognition are dreams come true—until they're not. Injuries, illnesses, and personal issues can quickly turn a dream season into a living nightmare. Our issues try to take the place of our identity, and before long, we look in the mirror and forget who is staring back, like a beneficiary of an inheritance that has never been claimed. How do we handle life's sucker punches? Are they ultimately God's provident blessings in disguise? What does being an athlete have in common with these ideas? I look forward to sharing the answers with you. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Colleges and universities offer amazing opportunities and challenges for followers of Jesus to grow in and live out their faith, both for students and professors. In the first part of this workshop, Catherine shares her own story of being a scientist and a professor at a liberal arts college, focusing on how she is trying to live out her faith through my work and how being in this role has pushed her to grow in faith. In the second part, workshop participants had the opportunity to reflect on and discuss how these ideas might relate to living out their own faith, today as students, and, in the future, wherever God is calling them. We will also help you think about next steps, whether you are in the process of discernment or in motion towards a particular calling. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Fashion might seem superficial, but is it? This session offers an eye-opening discussion on how fashion touches every aspect of our lives—from politics, art, and identity, to what it means to be human. Taking as its starting point things that make up our everyday lives—what we wear, a trip to the mall, the latest style—our discussion will explore how these mundane practices are attached to a myriad of deeper assumptions in our late modern world. How does the Apostle Paul's call for Christians to “put on Jesus Christ” challenge, subvert, and redirect these modern assumptions? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
