War. Famine. Poverty. Violence. Natural Disasters. Working in humanitarian spaces puts us up close and personal with some of the worst kinds of evil and suffering. In the face of it all, we follow a God who is both all good and all powerful. How do those two realities compute? It's a quandary that has been around a long time and we've invited Southeastern University's Dr. Chris Palmer onto the show to help us think biblically and theologically when we're faced with the problem of evil. From the killing fields in Polpot's Cambodia to earthquakes in the Middle East, we wrestle the reality of pain while clinging to God's goodness and embracing the mystery. Shailendra Kumar Singh's Between Resistance and Conformity: Premchand's Fiction in Colonial North India (Routledge, 2024) examines the questions of conformity and resistance with respect to Premchand's literary corpus. Mapping the various complexities, challenges, and contradictions of interwar India, it demonstrates how the passive peasant protagonists of the writer's fictional works present a diametrically opposed definition of dharma as compared to their dissident nationalist counterparts. Through a relatively similar logic of comparative assessment, it further foregrounds the fundamental asymmetry that exists between Premchand's literary representations of women as compliant domestic subjects and those that portray them as rebel patriots of colonial North India. Juxtaposing several genres, including novels, short stories, letters, and journalistic writings to offer a reconsideration of Premchand's work, this book will interest scholars of peasant narratives, nationalist fiction, and gender studies. Today I am joined on the podcast by Haunted Images!Haunted Images is the singular vision of Louth based producer and songwriter David O'Farrell-McGeary, who has previously been on the podcast under the david ofmg. Under this guise David creates beautiful, ethereal alt-rock shoegaze. Juxtaposing modern alt-metal influences Deftones and Deafheaven, against the left field ambience of Aphex Twin and shoegaze mainstays My Bloody Valentine, gives David his signature sound. One that, in equal parts, shimmers like a graceful celestial body, while at the same time with the dense wall of sound production, cascades over you like wave. Following the successful release of singles ‘if you want', ‘grey days', ‘sometimes' and the stunning ‘stay awake', which caught the attention of Hot Press, Golden Plec, Genuine Irish, Pure M Zine, Independent.ie, Ragged Cast and Rock N Load, David now returns with his self titled album, Haunted Images. This marks his largest and most realised body of work to date. An album that lyrically comes from a place of deep introspection and thematically addresses forgiveness in many different forms, an album that seeks to bring light to the impending darkness.I'll be going through the album with David, talking about his favourite songs on it, the stylistic changes from his previous work, the imagery created for the album by the extremely talented Chloe Harte, the creative balance on working on your own music and whole bunch more. The album is out tomorrow and there is also an album launch party at The Watchtower, McHughs in Drogheda on the 25th of April with Khidye as the supporting act!Original photograph for the artwork by Matt Gorman.haunted images on BandcampTickets for the album launch party Hosted on Acast. Mike's Minute: I have loved my years in the media game

The irony was not lost on me this week as two things job related happened. The first was the survey that suggested over half of us regret our career choice. That struck me as profoundly sad. Say whatever you want about work and work-life balance, but a lot of hours are spent in a lifetime grafting. Virtually everyone, at least at the start, has to work. Everyone of course should work because it's good for you. But to have a lifetime of regret is to not have really lived at all, or at least not to your full potential. Juxtaposing that was the surprise, to me anyway, that I had been here at Newstalk ZB for 25 years. A smaller surprise was on the same day, April 1st, Morning Report at Radio New Zealand was marking 50 years. I spent a short stint at Morning Report in moderately, although ultimately, I think, successful circumstances. Without word of a lie I have loved every day, of every week, of every month, of every year. Not just at Newstalk ZB, but the 44 years I have been in this game. Of course I had bad days. I had bad employers, I had ropy times and I've been sacked twice by morons, but I've never regretted picking doing what I do. Which is a small miracle, given I have never really been able to tell anyone with any clarity why I picked this game in the first place, other than it seemed appealing. I had no mentors or people I knew in media. As a kid I listened to the radio and thought that sounds fun. As it turns out, I was right. The other small saviour has been the fact that not only didn't I regret it, it worked out moderately well in terms of gainful employment, because at no stage in the past four decades have I been able to conjure up an alternative. I literally cannot think of anything else I would want to do. I would like to think though, and this goes to the survey, that if it hadn't gone well or I did regret it, I would have done something about it. Because life's big lesson is life is short. And if you aren't rolling with it, you are fighting it. And that's no fun and it wears you out. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Vanessa Stockard recently visited the podcast for the 3rd time!Vanessa Stockard was born in 1975 in Sydney and spent her formative years in a small country town in the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. At 12 she returned to Sydney as a boarder at Abbotsleigh. After graduating from the College of Fine Arts (COFA) Sydney in 1998 with a BFA, Stockard launched head first into the avant-garde art scene in the bohemian village of Glebe.Stockard is one of the most dangerous artists on the Australian, and by extension, international scene. Her ethereal works of art are a window into the soul of a talented and complex artist, one whose legacy is bound to resonate well past her generation. The existential nature of her painting viscerally questions our concepts of social relationships and reality.Twenty years of introspection and experimentation, ranging over a number of media, have forged Vanessa's style and vulcanised her craft, enabling her to reveal complex misdemeanours, while simultaneously demanding the viewer's self-reflection. She deals with isolation and sadness with intimate care and attention.Vanessa is unhindered by failure, always continuing the discovery of things previously unseen, revealing work that is fresh, unlaboured and penetrating. The deceptive everyday nature of her subject matter belies hidden depths of relationship, feeling and emotion. One could describe her process as absence of thought, a freedom of construct, not unlike the stream of consciousness associated with authors such as Hemmingway and Thomas Wolfe. If light and shade were students, she would be their master. This skill, combined with a naturally deft hand and a determined use of perspective, imbue her subjects with gravitas. The artist refers to set design elements that often alter and morph as her piece progresses. She has said she feels grounded from her ability to draw from the benign surrounds of familiar life, infusing these images with a meaning that yields a meditative satisfaction.Stockard's oeuvre features many pieces developed without any direct visual reference but rather from memory, often incorporating domestic pets such as cats and dogs. Juxtaposing the anthropomorphic nature these animals are given by our society, she infuses the personification of virtue and vice into the everyday canine and feline status quo of our pets. Cats with their fluffy comical exteriors glint with an instinctive urge to kill and cruelly torment their prey, dogs with their providence of happiness, loyalty and friendship are flung back onto Churchill's menacing metaphor for depression. The Kafkaesque mindset behind such works is reminiscent of the existentialist authors like Sartre and Camus. Absurdism appears with cake imagery and its relation to a childlike nostalgia for happiness which may never be real, but rather imaginary, unattainable and unachievable. It's been said “pain is inexhaustible, it's only people who get exhausted…”One can never “have it all”, to be both the artist and patron. To intrinsically understand those things around us that others overlook is what we want from our artists, our creatives. They give voice to the profound mystery of the world around us, surrounded as we are with consumerism, pointless greed, deceit and dissatisfaction. There's no pretension here in these paintings, just spontaneous insight and beauty. Some art is said to speak volumes, but these works are more like innocent and delicate poems, whispering untold truths with an economy of words.Something Rather Than Nothing Podcast

In India, elite law firms offer a surprising oasis for women within a hostile, predominantly male industry. Less than 10 percent of the country's lawyers are female, but women in the most prestigious firms are significantly represented both at entry and partnership. Elite workspaces are notorious for being unfriendly to new actors, so what allows for aberration in certain workspaces? Drawing from observations and interviews with more than 130 elite professionals, Accidental Feminism: Gender Parity and Selective Mobility Among India's Professional Elite (Princeton UP, 2021) examines how a range of underlying mechanisms-gendered socialization and essentialism, family structures and dynamics, and firm and regulatory histories-afford certain professionals egalitarian outcomes that are not available to their local and global peers. Juxtaposing findings on the legal profession with those on elite consulting firms, Swethaa Ballakrishnen reveals that parity arises not from a commitment to create feminist organizations, but from structural factors that incidentally come together to do gender differently. Simultaneously, their research offers notes of caution: while conditional convergence may create equality in ways that more targeted endeavors fail to achieve, "accidental" developments are hard to replicate, and are, in this case, buttressed by embedded inequalities. Ballakrishnen examines whether gender parity produced without institutional sanction should still be considered feminist. In offering new ways to think about equality movements and outcomes, Accidental Feminism forces readers to critically consider the work of intention in progress narratives. CLR Show 1964. Air Date September 10, 2024. Juxtaposing the free-for-all executive privilege ruling of the Supreme Court against the unhinged threats and behavior of Donald Trump, and it's no wonder most of the planet believes America may have lost its mind for even considering convicted felon Donald Trump an acceptable candidate for the presidency, much less one in strong contention for the position. But, despite the tight polls, Kamala's massive and consistent 15-point lead with women, coupled with the inefficient ground game established by the republicans in key swing states, may still lead to a Nixon-McGovern-1972-like victory for Kamala in November. Trump will attack viciously at tonight's debate; it's the only tool left in his quiver. And, by every indication, Kamala will make him pay for it. Stay tuned.

Juxtaposing the Torah portion Va'etchanan with Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude reveals intriguing contrasts and parallels in their treatment of memory, tradition, and identity. In Va'etchanan, Moses implores the Israelites to remember their past experiences and adhere to the divine commandments as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. This act of remembrance is framed within a covenantal relationship, emphasizing a linear progression of faith and duty. Conversely, Márquez's novel presents a cyclical view of history through the Buendía family's multi-generational saga in Macondo, where characters are trapped in repetitive patterns of behavior and destiny. While Ve'etchanan underscores a forward-looking commitment to divine law and collective memory, One Hundred Years of Solitude reflects on how the past continually shapes and entraps individuals within a cycle of fate. Both works grapple with the power of memory and tradition, but Ve'etchanan offers a vision of renewal and adherence to sacred principles, whereas Márquez's narrative explores the inescapable and often burdensome nature of historical repetition.  This episode is sponsored by The Professional Centre. Buy Emerald Wounds: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/emerald-woundsJoyce Mansour was a Syrian Jewish exile from Egypt whose fierce, macabre, erotically charged works gave André Breton's Surrealist group a much-needed jolt after the ravages of the Second World War. Among new adherents, only Mansour wrote poems commensurate with those of Robert Desnos, René Char, Benjamin Pêret, and other poets from the movement's heyday.Emerald Wounds: Selected Poems by Joyce Mansour is a compact yet career-spanning, bilingual anthology of this incendiary poet. With a biographical introduction by translator Emilie Moorhouse, who was drawn to Mansour's tough, take-no-prisoners stance during the societal reckoning of the #MeToo movement, Emerald Wounds showcases the entire arc of her trajectory as a poet, from the at-once gothic and minimalist fragments of her first collection in 1953, Screams, to the serpentine power of her final poems of the 1980s. Juxtaposing the original French poems with their English translations, Mansour's voice surges forward uncensored and raw, communicating the frustrations, anger, and sadness of an intelligent, worldly woman who defies the constraints and oppression of a male-dominated society that sees women as superficial objects of desire rather than multidimensional, autonomous subjects. Mansour is a poet the world needs today. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Juxtaposing traditional forms such as sonnets and elegies with less orthodox interjections, such as prose-poem "prayers" and other meditations, the collection presents a poetic world both familiar and jarring--one in which history, the body, and poetry can collide in a single surprising turn of image: "The stars also suffer. Immense and dead, their gasses burn / distant like castanets of antebellum teeth. My open window / a synecdoche of country."

Rose Parfitt is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Kent and the author of The Process of International Legal Reproduction: Inequality, Historiography, Resistance (Cambridge University Press, 2019). That all states are free and equal under international law is axiomatic to the discipline. Yet even a brief look at the dynamics of the international order calls that axiom into question. Mobilizing fresh archival research and drawing on a tradition of unorthodox Marxist and anti-colonial scholarship, Rose Parfitt develops a new 'modular' legal historiography to make sense of the paradoxical relationship between sovereign equality and inequality. Juxtaposing a series of seemingly unrelated histories against one another, including a radical re-examination of the canonical story of Fascist Italy's invasion of Ethiopia, The Process of International Legal Reproduction exposes the conditional nature of the process through which international law creates and disciplines new states and their subjects. The result is a powerful critique of international law's role in establishing and perpetuating inequalities of wealth, power, and pleasure, accompanied by a call to attend more closely to the strategies of resistance that are generated in that process.
