Horror and thriller fans gather around. We invite you to listen as we watch two obscure horror/thriller movies a month and then BLOW YOUR MIND with our thoughts, opinions and insight on the films. Sometimes thought-provoking and informative but mostly ludicrous and fun, Filmed Obscura is your gateway into rare, obscure, hard to find and just plain awesome films (except one-you'll see). We also drink local beer. Thanks for listening. Hosted by Justin Adkins and Chris Herdter.
Hallo meine freunde! The boys are back for the 60th episode of Filmed Obscura. As noted in the preamble, this will be our May episode since Justin dropped the ball and delayed the release. Sigh. Anyway, it's a fun episode where the gents tackle 80s synth rock, German exploitation cinema. This month's slice of enjoyment is Eckhart Schmidt's Der Fan. It's chock full of 80s goodness, rock entitlement, child grooming, and bone pulverizing. So grab your delicious beverages and enjoy the ride. Prost!
Oh boy friends! The new season is upon us. Part 2 of the "Tougher to Watch" cinema is back and Justin is scared. Seriously, he's not ready for this. There have been too many easy, fun films in the past months that he went soft. Chris is ready to bring the heat and toughen him up again, and he's starting with Marian Dora. Oh boy indeed. This time, it's Dora's short segment in the anthology: The Profane Exhibit. Starting the season off right with a Marian Dora short film. Welcome back friends. Grab your beverages! Part 2 is upon us! Cheers!
The boys are finally back! Slight delays were recently afoot but the February episode is upon us (although it's dropping in March). This marks the final episode of season 7. Chris brought a solidly made, surprising and interesting film called Sator that everybody should see. The boys also give the listeners their top 5 watches of 2024 with honorable mentions. So that being said, go on and grab those leftover beverages from Valentine's Day, or crack open those brews you're saving for St. Patty's Day, and get ready for a fun episode! Thanks again for tuning in!!!
Hohoho Filmed Obscura fans! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and cheers to all. The boys are here with their special holiday episode for your listening pleasure. They brought back an MVP to the podcast as well as a new face to ring in the holiday season, and they are discussing Jesus. The torture of Jesus to be exact. That's right friends, the spotlight this year is Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. What better way to celebrate Jesus' birthday than with his passion. Grab those drinks because you might need them. There's a lot of torture in this one. Enjoy!!!
Happy December friends. The boys are back for another helping of awesome, somewhat obscure, movie fun. It was Justin's pick this month and he went with one of his FAVORITE films. His spirit animal...as he puts it. That film is Moorehead & Benson's Spring. Their wonderful follow-up to Resolution, and just a marvelous slice of indie cinema. It has love, monsters, meandering, conversations and Italian scenery for all to enjoy. So tune in with a nice glass of wine (or whichever beverage you choose) and enjoy! Happy Holidays all!
Hey everybody! As an added bonus, the boys put together a little Twin Peaks spotlight episode to discuss the wonders and craziness of Mark Frost and David Lynch's Showtime revival of Twin Peaks. Justin binged the hell out of it recently, and he just had to get his thoughts and questions out to Chris for analysis and perspective. We hope you enjoy it and Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
Happy Almost Thanksgiving friends! The boys are back after a little delay. Apologies are warranted because Justin and Chris had some scheduling issues that prevented them from recording and releasing the new episode in October. To make amends, they have the new one ready just in time for turkey day, and also have a little bonus Spotlight episode coming this month as well. For this gem, Chris brought a BANGER to the podcast. It's a "movie" for sure...and it's full of martial arts, zombie ninjas, psycho monks, pretty things, and Cameron Mitchell. That's right, Blood and Black Lace's own Cameron Mitchell. What movie you ask? Why it's Raw Force. You might want a little buzz for this one because it's awesome. Cheers!
Welcome back for the first episode of the fall season (technically). While there is no pumpkin spice to celebrate the episode, Justin brought a certified banger to the Filmed Obscura world. It's a film that he knew Chris would vibe on, and it's frankly one of the better religious cult movies in recent years. What movie you say? Why that is Riley Stearns' Faults. You guys don't want to miss this one. Grab those pumpkin spice brews and apple cider donuts friends. You won't be disappointed.
Welcome back friends to Episode 54! The boys have had their appetizer for what's to come next season...and it was a doozy. Chris' pick this month brought the Filmed Obscura crew, and special guest Mr. Przebowski, back to the mysterious, disturbing, unusual, poorly lit and unnecessary world of Marian Dora. Yes, you guessed it. They watched the film he made before Melancholie Der Engel: Cannibal. It's a true crime slice of life with lots of nudity, uncomfortable eroticism, disgusting dismemberments, feces, and cannibalism. Spoiler Alert: Justin liked it better than Melancholie--point for Dora. You will need your beverages for this one.
Welcome back for another slice of fun here at Filmed Obscura. Happy summer to all. The boys are back for another episode of randomness. This month, they had to audible because the special guest couldn't make the episode. In response, Justin stepped up for his next pick and brought some pure cinema gold. Don't fret, we will be doing Chris' pick next month guaranteed...with or without Mr. P. But for now, feast your ears on a movie experience that has serial killers, gatekeepers, the afterlife, The Book of Death, martial arts, sword fighting, sunglasses, leather jackets and pants, and PURE style. It's Justin's Star Wars...his words. So grab those beverages and enjoy Ryuhei Kitamura's Sky High (not the television show from Japan or the Kurt Russell, superhero high school vehicle). Go then!
Welcome back to Filmed Obscura friends. Happy summer to all. Chris and Justin have another doozy of a film to talk about this month. It was Justin's pick this time, so he went with a more obscure John Carpenter joint...Assault on Precinct 13. It's one of Justin's personal favorites and, as you will hear, Chris rather enjoyed it. You will too so check it out. Cheers and enjoy!
Thank you for returning to the wonderful audio world of Filmed Obscura. Happy May and almost Memorial Day!! This month, Chris and Justin revert back to the trials and hardships of a previous season where they watched difficult cinema. Chris channeled that passion with his pick, but he also made the selection based on its link with our prior episode The Theatre Bizarre. Director Douglas Buck had a solid short in The Theatre Bizarre so Chris thought, why not do his other anthology? And...so the boys got to experience Family Portraits. It's a treat. Please enjoy and don't forget your local beverages. You can follow Filmed Obscura, or the boys, on social media. Chris is on IG and Justin is on IG and X (Twitter--whatever). Find them!
The Filmed Obscura boys are back with the second film of the new season. Justin picked this one for Chris and as you will hear, it worked out well. That film is The Theatre Bizarre. It's a scrappy anthology with varying segments. Some great, some not so much, but overall, the film is fun and surprising at points. Justin even had a change of heart about a couple of segments after this viewing. So go grab those refreshments friends...it's time to enter the Grand Guignol theatre for some fun.
It's Season 7 time friends! Welcome back and thank you! The boys are picking obscure films that the other hasn't seen for the next ten episodes and they are super excited. Chris is kicking off this season with a solid Giallo film that borders on sleaze and intrigue. It's fun, exploitative (in a good way if that's possible), and mysterious. Solid banger to start off the season! What film say you? Why its the newer Vinegar Syndrome release of 5 Women for the Killer. The picture will be posted in the socials so seek it out...along with the beverages we're spotlighting (also in the monthly photo for this season). Cheers!Find us on Twitter/X/Elon.com at @filmedobscura or @rustyman_51. Justin is also on IG at rustyman_51. We still don't know where Chris is on social media.
Happy belated New Year Filmed Obscura friends, listeners and family! Justin and Chris are back with the final episode of Season 6 and it's a fun one. The season finale was Chris' opportunity to pick the last film and he didn't disappoint. Grab your headphones and get ready...because Skinned Deep is coming at you. Plates, Brain and the Surgeon General are ready for your earholes. Oh boy! Grab the beverages and get after it. Thanks for continuing this journey with us here at Filmed Obscura!!!***We're still on social media under Filmed Obscura at "X" or Twitter or whatever it's called now.
Happy holidays to all from Filmed Obscura. To celebrate this merry time of year, Chris and Justin watched a doozy of a film. It was Justin's final choice for the season. Was it a Christmas movie? Of course not! Was it terrible? You better believe it! Was it fun? Ten four partner! What film is this? Why it's Champagne and Bullets. You haven't heard of it? Well that's about to change. So go ahead and start your holiday season off with a banger of a film. Grab that sparkling beverage friends and enjoy. You will...it's not a problem.
Happy New Yea...wait! What? It's almost Thanksgiving. So why are the boys doing a New Years movie? Because...why not! Welcome to Episode 46 of Filmed Obscura. Justin and Chris continue the season of schlock, fun cinema with a Norman J. Warren special: the obscure Bloody New Year. Much like a Bloody Mary drink, it's many ingredients (movies) thrown into a glass and stirred into craziness. And that's not necessary a bad thing. You can grab the physical media at Vinegar Syndrome so hurry up. Why you're at it, grab a Bloody Mary, or alternate drink of choice, and enjoy this fine slice of British horror. You might be disappointed...but maybe not. Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving all!
Happy belated Halloween friends. This is your October episode swinging in one day late. Apologies but the grappling hook was misplaced and the children invaded the boys for treats. Now it's live and ready for your ears. What halloween movie did the boys pick? Why only one of Cannon's best and most bonkers--Ninja III: The Domination. This gem of a movie has everything you want: ninjas, possession, flying swords, Sho Kosugi, ninjas on golf courses, 80s awesomeness, Aquanet, you name it. Don't believe us, give it a listen. You won't be disappointed. So go on, grab those ninja inspired beverages and buckle up, it's Ninja III: The Domination time.
Bruno Mattei alert. Copyright Infringement alert (not by Filmed Obscura, of course). It's rip off time! Welcome back for the perfect "summer's over" movie. Actually, it's more of the perfect summer movie, but the boys had to do Night Killer first. This month, Chris chose one of the most notorious Jaws rip off movies of all time to spotlight and let's be honest, it lived up to the reputation. So much so that Evan had to seek outside counsel after watching it. What film you ask? Why it's Cruel Jaws...also known as Jaws 5: Cruel Jaws. The boys watched the Severin release of the film which included two cuts. The version being discussed here is the Mattei Cut. So please, keep that in mind. It's no Jaws, or Jaws 4: The Revenge, or The Last Shark, or Deep Blood...but know it has footage from all of those included. Pour your beverage now...it's time to swim.
Okay...so let's be frank. This is one of the more surprising films of the season, at least from Justin's perspective, because it's not that bad. It's Claudio Fragasso, the director of Troll 2, and it's not that bad. It has a twist that Chris didn't even realize. Not that bad. The mask and glove...okay they're bad. But the film isn't. What film you say? Why that film is Night Killer. Oh yes, Night Killer. That about sums it up...
Let's try this again. For all who noticed, Ep. 42 dropped in late July but had to be removed due to technical issues. Apologies for the confusion. Justin's computer issues continue to haunt him like the children in this film. Notwithstanding, it's back up. Joe Brady is back. Kids are killing people. Anarchy ensues. Adults are killing children. It's bonkers. So, without further delay, please enjoy Beware! Children at Play. Grab that moonshine...cheers! Thank you for your patience.
It IS about time the boys do an Amityville film, and nothing came more recommended for an obscure, fun pick than Tony Randel's (Hellbound: Hellraiser 2) entry in the long running series. Full of mounted clocks, randomness, abandoned plots and phantom bite wounds, this movie delivers the goods. It is Filmed Obscura approved? Well...the Amityville beer was. Grab some more beverages and enjoy the clock-filled terror. Cheers!!!
It's the 40th episode of Filmed Obscura. Hell yeah!!! The boys are super excited to bring you this fun-filled episode full of random phone calls, 80s slasher tropes, Busch beer, Star Trek and more tangents than you asked for. It's the second episode of Season 6 and Chris picked the flawed, yet entertaining Slaughter High. The movie didn't reinvent the slasher film, or turn the world on it's head, but it has some solid kills. As always, grab your beverage and enjoy the second film offering in March. Justin and Chris will be back to the normal monthly schedule in April. Cheers! We are on social media...and based on my Twitter comments, we're still bad at it.Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @chrisherdter on IGTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
Happy February friends...oh crap! It's actually March; damn you short month. Well, I guess the boys will be doing two episodes this month. Welcome to the Season 6 premiere of Filmed Obscura. The boys made it to 39 episodes and now their bringing some fun horror movies to the mix. This season, Chris and Justin will be tackling goofy, fun horror movies. It's a horror-centric season but the films will be uber fun. In fact, NOTHING like Season 4. For the premiere, Justin picked a loving tribute to films like The Evil Dead, Demons and Night of the Demons. It's got demons. It's got campy characters. It's got wind. Sort of? Get ready for Demon Wind. There might be angels...and lots of tangents. Sorry, but enjoy! We are on social media, but as you'll see, we're really bad at it.Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @chrisherdter on IGTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
Greetings all and welcome to the tail end of January. Justin and Chris have a banger for you all this episode for the Season 5 finale. It's the perfect mix of what was fun this past season, and a great precursor for what's to come. There is also a special guest joining us and he brought the goods. What film and guest you say? Why it's Miami Connection in all it's 80s glory, with frequent listener and friend; first time guest David Wahab. Get those Florida beers ready...you're going to love this one! Cheers! We are on social media, but don't worry about us...watch Miami Connection! Do it!Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @OldTerrifier on TwitterTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
Happy Holidays friends! Chris and Justin made it just in time for Christmas. Here is the ultimate episode of Christmas cheer…featuring a terrifying movie. Just kidding! The boys tackled a Hallmark movie for the first time and counted down their top 5 watches of 2022. It's The Spirit of Christmas. Of course, nobody can forget the ongoing Holiday Special tradition. You'll hear it in the beginning and you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/96PaQyRfNnI
Happy last day of November friends. Cutting it close this month but the holiday caused a bit of a back up for Filmed Obscura. It was Justin mostly; Chris is innocent because he showed up ready to slay it...and he was on fire! With that fire came a hot Spaghetti Western for the turkey season. The boys watched Lee Van Cleef own the screen in Death Rides a Horse. As you will hear, it's one of the better efforts in the post Sergio Leone western craze. There may not be The Man with No Name but it's a solid western with one of the best opening sequences out there. So don't delay! Grab that whiskey and get the show on the road. Full disclosure: there may be tangents as well. Enjoy! We are on social media! Our horse does not :(Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @OldTerrifier on TwitterTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
Happy Halloween friends! Here is the second episode in October and don't be mad...but it's a comedy. Right? Weird...but it's worth it. Chris brought a great film to the table with David Wain and Michael Showalter's They Came Together starring Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler. While comedic in nature, there are some Halloween/horror based scenes. We promise. Also, you'll get a little Halloween Ends talk, and Justin and Chris' top 5 comedy films as a fun edition. So go on and grab the Halloween candy, crack open the fall beverage, and enjoy the discussion about one of the funniest films in recent years.
Happy October friends! Apologies for missing an episode in September but certain conflicts got in the way including filming the first Filmed Obscura film. So in true F.O. fashion, you will get two episodes in October. First up: a film that Justin thought was a traditional Giallo...but he was wrong. It's a classic Italian horror film though! The boys watched Pupi Avati's The House with Laughing Windows. With this, they also did a fun Top 5 Giallo list for your listening pleasure. Listen...there are some very real debates about what constitutes a Giallo and a Slasher, and what might be adjacent. Chris and Justin dive into it. Are they still stuck in the bottom of the pool of the debate? Maybe...but there will be some good films discussed and the audience should check out!!! Grab your October beverages and cuddle up, this podcast is the first part of a double treat. Next Episode will drop before Halloween!
Welcome back to Episode 33 friends. It's been said a lot on this podcast but...this episode is gold. Unfortunately, Chris was unable to attend but Justin brought on an old fave to help co-host and a good friend to navigate the awesomeness of the film. What film you ask? Why it's Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett's The Guest. You know...the film where Matthew from Downton Abbey plays a charming Michael Myers/Rambo hybrid. Yep...that one. Grab those spiked Iced Teas, high octane IPAs and get your ears ready. It's on!!!We are on social media! We ran here to tell you...from the bus station!Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @OldTerrifier on TwitterTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
You saw that right friends! Chris and Justin are back to De Palma. For the second episode of July, the boys are discussing Brian De Palma's return to form with Passion. It's sexy, it's thrilling, it's uber De Palma...in a great way. So put on your American Giallo hats, grab your beverages, and get ready for a fun, stylish, mind-bending film that's worth every minute. You won't be disappointed.
Justin and Chris are back...finally! Welcome to Episode 31. Many apologies for the delay in releasing a new episode. Good ole COVID, and other things, caused some delays but now the boys are back with a fun new episode. Do you like Brad Pitt? Do you like Donovan? Maybe his son? Then you're in for a treat! Chris' pick for this month was none other than the wonderful 80s slasher film Cutting Class. The film marks Brad Pitt's first feature film and stars the son of musician Donovan. Need there be more? Grab those beverages, friends. This one is fun!
It's the 30th episode (not including our three commentaries) of Filmed Obscura. Woohoo! Justin and Chris are super excited and wanted to do something different this time around. So they added an extended Spotlight segment of their top 5 obscure films with some honorable mentions. It's fun. Not to be overshadowed is their movie of the month: Ryuhei Kitamura's Aragami: The Raging God of Battle. It's punk, it's samurai, it's awesome. Watch it. Cheers to the 30th episode and here's to many more...enjoy!We are on social media! I will post more about punk rock samurai films!Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @OldTerrifier on TwitterTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
It's time for Season 5 folks. It's time for regular cinema again. It's time...for whatever they want to bring. That's right. The boys can watch and discuss any film, from any genre, this time around. While Chris could definitely bring the rough content to your ears and eyeballs, he changed things up and offered a winner of an easygoing film for the season premiere. Its about classic cars, drag racing, and youth counterculture in the early 70s. And what a cool film it is. The boys are discussing Monte Hellman's Two-Lane Blacktop. Apologies all around for the tardiness in releasing the episode. Next month, it's back to the normal releasing schedule. No apologies for the awesome tangents...those are a gift. So please sit back, relax and enjoy James Taylor in his only acting role. Grab those beverages. We are on social media and so happy to watch a normal film again!Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @ChrisHerdter on TwitterTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
It's the Season 4 finale and the second film of March! Justin and Chris made it through the tougher content cycle of films...virtually unscathed. Chris did anyway. Now to the final film of the season, and to help celebrate the completion of this blazing garbage pail of content, the boys invited back the one and only Evan Przebowski. Do you think he liked the film? What film you ask...why it's Sweet Movie; a little gem of a "comedy" directed by Dusan Makavejev. Comedy it is not from a Filmed Obscura standpoint as it's content is boundary pushing, gag-inducing, and just plain shocking. You'll hear why. Just remember, it's a legitimate release. You've been warned yet again lol. So grab those beers, beverages and snacks. This is a good one. We are on social media! We got a little LESS porn with this one...yay :)Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @ChrisHerdter on TwitterTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
Welcome to March friends! Oh boy, do Chris and Justin have a backslap of a film this month. Apologies for the gap in episodes (February didn't work out due to illness) but you'll get two episodes this month to make up for it. First up is the horrifying film Melancholie der Engel. Directed by Marian Dora, this trash fire of content is crazy. It really can't be described because so much happens, whether good or bad, but it's bonkers tough cinema that is ABSOLUTELY NOT for the average viewer. This is your warning if you are going to watch it. Justin will never watch it again. Chris may. So get out there and grab many beverages because you're going to need them. Cheers...and if you watch, don't shoot the messenger. We are on social media! We got WAY MORE porn with this one...sigh!Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @ChrisHerdter on TwitterTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
Welcome to 2022 Filmed Obscura fans! Thank you so much for your support. Justin and Chris are back with the continuing saga of "tougher content" cinema. Coming off the craziness that is Subconscious Cruelty, this month's offering is a breath of fresh air. It was still difficult to watch to some degree, and the content pushes some boundaries, but it was not the roadkill we were expecting. January's film is Phil Steven's Flowers; a surreal, arthouse horror film that offers an interesting portrait of death and the emptiness that follows. If you're eating while watching, be warned! There is an early that makes your stomach rumble. That being said, enjoy!!We are on social media! We got less porn with this one...yay!Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @ChrisHerdter on TwitterTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays all! Chris and Justin are back with insightful commentary on the most unChristmas movie there is, Karim Hussain's Subconscious Cruelty. You thought House of Flesh Mannequins was "porny"...well buckle up. This film is the toughest so far and contains some pretty shocking imagery. Not for most casual viewers...please heed this warning if you decide to watch it. Also included is the Filmed Obscura Holiday Special Part II. You want to watch it? Check it out on YouTube at this link:https://youtu.be/mCaRRAUkBQ0Filmed Obscura wishes everybody a wonderful and safe holiday season. We'll be back in 2022 for more tougher content cinema. The last three will be doozies for sure. Cheers! We are on social media...please send us less "porny" arthouse films!Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @ChrisHerdter on TwitterTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
Whelp...Chris and Justin have done it. They found an obscure horror film that's super "porny". Not "porny" in the traditional sense, and no it's not A Serbian Film. Labeled "Too Extreme for Mainstream" by the distributer, it's extreme alright but not in the ways you may be expecting. Two words: male genitalia. That's what is in store for this month's offering...the extreme arthouse horror film House of Flesh Mannequins. Let's just leave it at that. You'll need a beverage. We are on social media...searching for less "porny" arthouse films. Sometimes...Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @ChrisHerdter on TwitterTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
Please pardon the tardiness this month but the entertainment wheels are turning in many directions. Good news...it's almost Halloween and Episode 23 is up. It's been said many times but this month's film, Begotten by E. Elias Merhige, is legitimately a doozy. It's an endurance film that's both compelling and difficult to watch. It may be one of the most obscure to date, and it fits SO nicely into Season 4. Seek it out and see if you agree with Justin and Chris' assessment. We are on social media...searching for more arthouse silent films with unsuspecting nudity and genital beating. Oh it's a Takashi Miike double header this month and Justin finally BROUGHT IT. Welcome back to Filmed Obscura. Chris and Justin brought some variety to this party. Reverting back to the old ways a bit, they discuss two films by the famous (or infamous), renowned and perhaps dangerous Takashi Miike. First up is his banned episode of Showtime's Masters of Horror series dealing with many difficult topics including incest, molestation, spousal abuse, abortion and talking hands with teeth. Oh yes...Imprint. Now if that isn't enough, they venture into the deeper pantheon of Miike films and casually discuss the craziness that is Visitor Q. More incest, more spousal abuse, more necrophilia! Justin finally brought a movie that made Chris go "Oh Yes...I'm buying this." You have to see it to believe it but it's not for everyone. We are on social media but nobody knows it. Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @ChrisHerdter on TwitterTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
Better late than never! Welcome back for episode 21 of Filmed Obscura. The films are gradually getting harder. This month, Chris brought another bleak, super downer movie and why are we surprised. He's got a talent for discovering the sadder side of cinema. The boys dive into the Spanish film Kidnapped (or Secuestrados for the purists). The film was directed by Miguel Angel Vivas and packs one hell of a gut punch (or stab). SPOILER ALERT: the ending is one to be seen with little knowledge so please WATCH the movie before listening to the podcast. If you don't care, then dive right in but otherwise please watch the ending. It's worth it. Now grab that beer...We are on social media but super bad at it.Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @ChrisHerdter on TwitterTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. :)
Twenty episodes in the bank and we're not stopping! Welcome back for the second episode of Season 4. Chris and Justin got Joe Brady to come back for this film because he's a huge Kevin Smith fan. Oh yes, you heard that right. THE Kevin Smith produced this little, obscure film about bullying, teen angst and gun violence. Not what you're used to from Mr. Smith but interesting nonetheless. That film is A Better Place directed by Vincent Periera. While not quite the "tougher content" film that some will endure during this season, the obscure nature and subject matter made it fit nicely overall. Joe brought in some nice incites to the conversation giving a well-balanced perspective overall. So please...enjoy! Snooch!
It's Season 4 of Filmed Obscura, and Chris and Justin are diving into "tougher content" cinema this time around. The format has changed slightly: one film per episode and ten episodes encompassing the season. They're off to good start with Chris' pick for the month: The Seasoning House. Directed by Paul Hyett, this film is a sad, dirty, heavy film about forced prostitution and addiction, violence and corruption, and redemption. Revenge hovers over the film but it's not I Spit on Your Grave. It also has Eastern European McGruber. It's the perfect start to a fun-filled season of dread. Don't forget to grab your favorite beverage while tuning in...that has not changed. Find us on the socials if you're curious. You'll definitely get pictures of physical media.Filmed Obscura: @FilmedObscura on TwitterJustin: @rustyman_51 on Twitter and IGChris: @ChrisHerdter on TwitterTheme song composed by artist Zagi2 courtesy of Freesound.org. Fantastic theme!
Welcome back to Filmed Obscura for the Season 3 finale. This is a "horrific" episode for so many reasons. Chris and Justin bring along FO alum Evan Przebowski for a fun mix of menacing duck voices, violent/misogynist killings, vague plot points, mumblecore stylings of deceit, serial killing, fanboys, and realistic (if sometimes long winded) sexual encounters. That's just the films. There's also Evan and Chris bickering like annoying siblings, Oprah moments, mispronunciation, lash outs, and a new segment. As for the films, the boys take on Lucio Fulci's notorious, controversial Giallo known as The New York Ripper before diving into Adam Wingard's stellar early feature: A Horrible Way to Die. Written by Simon Barrett, the duo's talent was in full display leaving no surprises about why they found success later on. A heartfelt "THANK YOU" goes out to all of our listeners who have given this little podcast a chance. The episodes will continue, with some minor alterations, but the appreciation we have for our listeners will never waiver. Hope you enjoy...it's the best episode ever.
Things are getting bleaker, sexualized and more punk rock with this episode. Chris had the older film this go 'round and chose Abel Ferrera's arthouse shocker The Driller Killer. There's a lot going on in this film including one of the grossest pizza eating scenes in recent history. Oh the peppers. Justin, on a different note, picked one short film out of the anthology Little Deaths for his newer movie-Simon Rumley's Bitch. It's bleak, it's sad, it's sexual, and it has dogs. Chris loved it just for the dogs. Hit the fridge, grab a cold one, follow the podcast, and enjoy April's fun offering.
Mario Bava! Christopher Lee! S&M cinema perhaps too risqué for theaters in the 60s. Justin's pick this month is the excellent, deeper cut in Mr. Bava's pantheon of films: The Whip and the Body. Chris, on the other hand, suggested a great indie slasher from Long Island's own Stevan Mena: Malevolence. This pick will delight any Halloween, Friday or TCM fan with its loving homage to the horror films we all grew up with. Grab that beverage of your choosing and enjoy!
Episode 15 is here! Justin and Chris return for the first "proper" episode of 2021 and Justin roped his wife Jana into joining the fun for the first movie. Spoiler alert! She didn't hate it. Of course that movie is Nightmare Beach (or Welcome to Spring Break). Chris gives by far his best introduction to this interesting work, and describing the film as "fun" is pretty spot on. Next up is the indie anthology about a killer clown called All Hallow's Eve. For those who like the violent stylings of Art the Clown will enjoy this discussion since it's the predecessor to Art's feature length gorefest Terrifier. Perhaps not as visceral, this anthology gives the audience a glimpse into the director's style and talent, and foreshadows some grisly kills along the way. Now just hit play.
Happy New Year all! Before the regular episodes resume, enjoy a fun romp of Justin, Chris and Joe watching Glenn Danzig's Verotika. As an added bonus, Joe brought another Pop Quiz Hotshot to the podcast. Here's a beverage corner salute to 2021. Cheers to long mirror shots!

New episode alert! Welcome back to Episode 14 of Filmed Obscura. Alfred Hitchcock! An atypical anthology full of spirit and charm! More tangents! Chris and Justin hit the next episode in full stride with a lesser known film from the Master of Suspense, and an indie three-part tale with enough heart to surpass many widespread releases. Yep...its Frenzy and The Signal (2007). Enjoy the discussion, observations and banter about two stellar films. Also, since our next episode won't drop until January, happy holidays everyone! Cheers!
