Hello! And welcome to The Dana Gould Hour podcast. Fasten your fun belts, we are blasting off, yet again.   We are joined today by legends. You heard me. Mark Frost is a legendary writer, first in television. He started out on The Six Million Dollar Man, moved on to Hill Street Blues, co-created Twin Peaks with David Lynch. In motion pictures, he wrote and directed the film Storyville, he wrote the 2005 The Fantastic Fourand its sequel Rise Of The Silver Surfer and he has a new book out entitled Yankee Sphinx, which tells the story of FDR from just before America's involvement in World War II up through his death. It's told through the eyes of FDR's Great Uncle, Will Hasset, who worked as FDR's speech writer and press attaché, one might say. We cover a lot of topics and a lot of ground and I am super happy that Mr. Frost sat down and gave me his time.   Gary Rhodes is a writer and film historian who has written, among many other titles, a multi-volume set on the strange life and career of Bela Lugosi. He's written about Ed Wood, he wrote the book Horror At The Drive In, Essays In Popular Americana and he has an excellent new book out entitled Weirdumentary: Ancient Aliens, Fallacious Prophecies and Mysterious Monsters from 1970's Documentaries. Before streaming, before cable, before the History Channel and Ancient Aliens, these topics were explored in documentaries at your local Cineplex. Many were produced by the late great, Sunn Classic Pictures. UFOs, Elvis, Bigfoot, they're all here, in the pages of Weirdumentary, and we're a-gonna talk about it.   And now, it's on, to our filthy business.

Welcome to the eighth episode of The Movies And Me, a podcast project of ours where in each of these episodes we sit down with a filmmaker, writer, someone who works in the film industry or just someone who is a big cinephile who just lives for movies. We talk about their creative projects and also discuss their four favourite films that have inspired them to go out and have a career in film. Or four films that have least inspired them to seek out the career they have today. On this episode, we welcome back Anders's old Met Film School friend Callum Burn to the podcast. On the first episode of The Movies And Me series, we talked with Callum about his film Battle Over Britain, a Second World War film. Now, Callum is here to talk about his new film: Landship set during the First World War. The film is having it's premiere at the Raindance Film Festival on the 20th June and it will be released in select cinemas on June 26th. Following that, it will be released on DVD, Blu-Ray and several streaming services to the territories the film has already been sold to. Produced through his production company Tin Hat Productions, Landship is set during the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. Brief synopsis from their website: "At the spear head of a British offensive, the nine-man crew of Battle Tank F41 'Fray Bentos' become bogged down in a shell crater in no-man's-land, just yards from the German front line. Over the course of sixty gruelling hours, Officer Commanding, Captain Donald Richardson, struggles to maintain discipline, as he and his crew come under repeated attack from an insidious enemy that appear from nowhere out of the dense smog that hangs across the battlefield." Along with discussing the project, we discuss with Callum the kinds of films that inspired and helped shape the project. We enjoyed this chat with Callum and we look forward to seeing the film. And hope you do as well!Follow Callum and Tin Hat Productions on their Instagram page. Plus their channel on YouTube. Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written with & directed by Joey Palmroos. On this episode of Ojai Talk of the Town, Bret Bradigan welcomes returning guest Mark Frost — bestselling author, co-creator of Twin Peaks, and author of the new historical work Yankee Sphinx. The conversation begins with Frost's remarkable great-uncle William D. Hassett, a close adviser to both Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry Truman who kept meticulous diaries from inside the White House during some of the twentieth century's defining moments. Frost discusses what those journals reveal about FDR's leadership, how Roosevelt's battle with polio shaped his empathy and political vision, and the lessons modern America may have forgotten about resilience, communication, and democratic leadership.Frost took Hassett's diaries and turned them into a page-turning, compelling work of fiction that shows the machinery of power up close and very, very personal. But the discussion ranges much further — into Eleanor Roosevelt's influence, the hidden structures beneath political power, the enduring mysteries woven through American history, and why places like Ojai continue to attract artists, seekers, and unconventional thinkers.Along the way, Frost reflects on storytelling, mythology, creativity, and the connective thread running from Twin Peaks to the Roosevelt White House: the idea that beneath every public story lies another deeper and stranger reality. We did not talk about Ty Cobb's counter-intuitive racial views, marble trout fishing in Croatia or tomato season. Listen in for a thoughtful, wide-ranging conversation about leadership, art, history, and the unseen forces that shape American life.https://www.amazon.com/Yankee-Sphinx-FDR-Novel/dp/1250876893

During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events. On this Fascism on Film episode, the Holmes Brothers look at and discuss the historical drama from Italian director Gillo Pontecorvo: Burn!. The film stars Marlon Brando, Renato Salvatori and Evaristo Márquez. Brando stars as a British agent provocateur called Sir William Walker who is sent to the island of Queimada, an island in the Lesser Antilles and a Portuguese colony. He is asked to overthrow the island through a slave revolt in order for the British sugar trade to profit from. Walker meets and befriends José Dolores who becomes a leader of the slave rebellion. Things turn complicated when Dolores leads a revolt against the new rulers. Brando said he did the best acting of his career on the film Burn! despite how difficult it was to make. Even though they quarrelled on set, Evaristo Márquez had to act as mediator between them, Brando said Pontecorvo was one of the three best directors he ever worked with. The other two were Elia Kazan and Bernardo Bertolucci. Ever since Mark Frost saw his actor father prepare all day for work, having to leave every evening to jump on stage, he knew he wanted to get his work done early in the morning. A life as a writer came calling. He's worked on all sorts, writing on 'Hill Street Blues', the 'Fantastic Four' movies, sports books, thriller novels, and it's his work with David Lynch, as the co-creator of the cult series, 'Twin Peaks', that he's most loved for.'Twin Peaks' was a show like no-other. A surreal, ethereal, chilling couple of series, that was a ratings win, a critical hit, and now has a cult-following. We discuss how the show, and working with Lynch, has influenced his writing since. His new novel is, 'The Yankee Sphinx', inspired by his great-uncle's diaries, it tells the story of Will Hassett, a close confidence of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States. We talk about how this idea met his fine criteria for working on a project. In this first of our two-part deep dive, we explore how Lynch returned to Twin Peaks after its cancellation — and how his original vision for a Twin Peaks movie evolved into something far darker and more personal. We'll track the story from the series' troubled end through the film's early development, the departure of co-creator Mark Frost, the decision to center Laura Palmer's final days, and the winding, often surreal path the script took. For a very special 100th episode of Screenshot, Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode explore the cult classic TV show. The great surrealist American filmmaker David Lynch died in January 2025 at the age of 78. Lynch's films spanned the underground midnight movie Eraserhead, the black and white heartbreaker The Elephant Man and the critically beloved Mulholland Drive. Yet the director was perhaps most appreciated for the TV show he co-created with screenwriter Mark Frost - Twin Peaks. Mark speaks to Mark Frost about his relationship with Lynch, and about the impact and legacy of their ground-breaking series. The pair discuss how pressure to solve the central murder of high school student Laura Palmer impacted Twin Peaks, and how the revival of the series in 2017 - after a 25 year hiatus - now seems fated.Meanwhile, Ellen talks to critic and die-hard Twin Peaks fan Jourdain Searles about the series' dedicated cult following. And she speaks to actor Tim Roth, star of Reservoir Dogs and Rob Roy, who got a chance to work with his hero David Lynch in 2017 on Twin Peaks: The Return. Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4
