Fifty years ago, a film was released that literally changed the world. Jaws transformed the way people think about going into the water and revolutionized how studios make movies, effectively creating what we now call the "summer blockbuster." Its influence is still felt five decades later, by both fans and filmmakers alike. And there's a reason for that: Jaws is just that good. In this episode, we take a deep dive into the film and explore the impact it's had on us (especially a couple of us who were profoundly shaped by it) as well as on the movie industry at large. People often talk about the idea of a “perfect movie,” one that couldn't be improved. Bruno Mattei is an infamous Italian director who's catalogue is full of some of the most egregious movie rip-offs of all time and this week's film, Cruel Jaws (aka Jaws 5) is no exception. Thankfully the cast was able to recruit Captain Steve from Bucket of Chum podcast to help us navigate through the confusing disjointed plot lines. Nate abandoned ship almost immediately and took Anna with him while Charlie, Pete and Captain Steve recognized the awfulness of the film and settled in for a good damn time. A trip to the coast gets Adam and Jared in the right head space to cover 1995's Jaws ripoff (in more ways than one), Cruel Jaws. A very short list of what they have been watching and an up or down on an upcoming slasher film round things out.

Devin & James are back in the Den with their penultimate visit to Italy! This time we shift from focusing on one genre to examining a type of film that is not uniquely Italian, but they sure put their own style on: THE KNOCK-OFF. Low-budget films ripping off box office hits has always been a popular way for Producers to make a buck. Still, the filmmakers themselves can sometimes bring their own spin to a popular trope or trend and create works that rise above being called simply imitations. And then... there are the imitations. We make the case that there is plenty to enjoy about all the approaches, as long as you know what you're getting into. We start with the sharksploitation film that Universal Studios successfully took off the market for lifting the plot of Jaws in 1981, Enzo G. Castellari's THE LAST SHARK (with a bonus look at CRUEL JAWS). If imitation is flattery, then Bruno Mattei must be one of the most complimentary filmmakers ever to play the game, and we dive into his back-to-back sci-fi knocks-offs from 1989, ROBOWAR (Predator featuring a Robocop) and SHOCKING DARK (Aliens featuring a Terminator). We finish up with a couple of films that are inspired by the head-spinning, pea soup-spitting world of The Exorcist, but that build their unique plots and bizarre twists to create works that stand on their own, Alberto De Martino's THE ANTICHRIST, and Ovidio G Assonitis and Roberto D'Ettorre's BEYOND THE DOOR, both from 1974. Grab a can of Campbell's Pea Soup and a straw, and buckle in.

We're wrapping up Sharktoberfest with the appropriately titled, the Last Shark. And it's an interesting experience because we've basically already seen it, since Cruel Jaws repurposes a lot of Last Shark's plot and actual footage! It's one of the more fascinating case studies we've covered in shark cinema. We also sample the Oktoberfest from Limestone Brewers and dip into a perennial favorite brew!

The Out Now with Aaron and Abe horror specials for 2024 continues with thoughts on films that turned out way different than we may have initially expected.
