It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a three parter anyways. 2012 was for me, a little bit of a slacker for horror movies, some would say that not enough time has elapsed to make this assessment, I say, shnozwaddle! The highs are really high & the lows can be quite messy. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 2012? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and a 5 hours of running time split over 3 episodes. This is 2012, A Year In Horror.0.33 - The Impossible 7.15 - Cockneys VS Zombies (w/ Michelle Ryan)21.11 - Also Rans (Part 2)22.02 - Resident Evil: Retribution (w/ Andre Dack)59.42 - V/H/S (w/ Niki Jones)
Thank you for returning to the wonderful audio world of Filmed Obscura. Happy May and almost Memorial Day!! This month, Chris and Justin revert back to the trials and hardships of a previous season where they watched difficult cinema. Chris channeled that passion with his pick, but he also made the selection based on its link with our prior episode The Theatre Bizarre. Director Douglas Buck had a solid short in The Theatre Bizarre so Chris thought, why not do his other anthology? And...so the boys got to experience Family Portraits. It's a treat. Please enjoy and don't forget your local beverages. You can follow Filmed Obscura, or the boys, on social media. Chris is on IG and Justin is on IG and X (Twitter--whatever). Find them!
The Filmed Obscura boys are back with the second film of the new season. Justin picked this one for Chris and as you will hear, it worked out well. That film is The Theatre Bizarre. It's a scrappy anthology with varying segments. Some great, some not so much, but overall, the film is fun and surprising at points. Justin even had a change of heart about a couple of segments after this viewing. So go grab those refreshments friends...it's time to enter the Grand Guignol theatre for some fun.
This week, we're chatting with Joshua James, musician/arranger/educator and leader of the Theatre Bizarre Orchestra. This is the "house band" for the world-famous Theatre Bizarre masquerade/Halloween bash that usually happens downtown at the Masonic Temple. This year, thanks to the Friends of the Ferndale Library, the Theatre Bizarre Orchestra will bring their zesty variety of jazz to the library's Summer Concert Series on August 22 at 6:30 pm. This is a free, all-ages show, hosted in the library's program room--don't miss it!
We are back, finally! Catch up with us and the crazy few months we've had from Camp Hollywood, Atomic's Student Showcase, and Dancing With The Stars to Halloween activities and Theatre Bizarre! Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 10, 2020 is: histrionic his-tree-AH-nik adjective 1 : deliberately affected : overly dramatic or emotional : theatrical 2 : of or relating to actors, acting, or the theater Examples: "How many water coolers, cocktail parties, and backyard barbecues have you been to where someone has exclaimed, usually in a flourish of histrionic frustration, that they wish they had their own island?" — Carmella DeCaria, The Westchester Magazine, 18 Jan. 2018 "The city's most extravagant and histrionic event of the fall, Theatre Bizarre, won't be taking place this October…. Typically taking over Detroit's Masonic Temple for two weekends just before Halloween, the indoor event includes hot-ticket masquerade balls, and a multi-floor spectacular that includes live music, burlesque, side show acts, food, drink and mandatory costumes—the more outrageous the better." — Melody Baetens, The Detroit News, 19 May 2020 Did you know? The term histrionic developed from histrio, Latin for "actor." Something that is histrionic tends to remind one of the high drama of stage and screen and is often stagy and over-the-top. It especially calls to mind the theatrical form known as the melodrama, where plot and physical action, not characterization, are emphasized. But something that is histrionic isn't always overdone; the word can also simply refer to an actor or describe something related to the theater. In that sense, it becomes a synonym of thespian.
We are starting a series of guest mixes spotlighting various artists outside of the Bay Area and kicking it off with a guest mix from Tampa Bay's InterCom (@intercom-dj). Intercom has pulverized dancefloors from coast to coast with his unique brand of impious vibrations since 1999. Stupefying crowds from Black Rock City to Lakes of Fire, Intercom’s influence on the Burning Man music community has stretched from memorable performances at the Freakeasy and Hookahdome to those at Dewie Decibels and Gon Kirin. In Detroit, Intercom spent years leaving audiences in a pile of their own excrement during monthlies for SanctumFM. Also pairing his caliginous vibe quite appropriately with the devils and ghouls at Theatre Bizarre, where he has performed since prior to the inception of their mainstream epoch. Intercom has opened for and supported such belligerence powerhouses as Deekline, Keith Mackenzie, Stanton Warriors, Freq Nasty and Radiohiro. Here's what he had to say about the mix: "The space cowboys have been a continual inspiration musically and it's an honor to have the opportunity to be featured by them. I hope this can get folks a-wiggling, even through quarantine! Down a seedy city street in her neighborhood, young Enola Penny is obsessed with what appears to be a long abandoned theatre. One night, she sees that the front door is slightly ajar and impulsively decides to sneak inside. But there in the dark, decrepit auditorium, a show unlike any other unfolds before her eyes. Its host is an eerie human puppet named Peg Poett who will introduce Penny to six tales of the bizarre: A couple traveling in a remote part of the French Pyrenees cross paths with a lustful witch; A paranoid lover faces the wrath of a partner who has been pushed to her limit; The Freudian dreams of an unfaithful husband blur the lines between fantasy and reality; The horrors of the real world are interpreted through the mind of a child; A woman addicted to other people's memories gets her fix through the vitreous fluid of her victims' eyeballs; And a perverse obsession with sweets turns sour for a couple in too deep. But as the stories unfold, something much stranger is happening to Enola. Something irreversible and horrific.

Mike Royce is confused by the mechanics of ‘Iron Man Porn’, explains why an A-Lister should never accept a ‘Walker Job’, and agrees that it is A Good Day To Die Hard. ‘3D Musketeers’ and ‘Real Steel’ are reviewed, and ‘The Woman’ is worshipped.
