It's time for one of those huge episodes. What's up, Rotters! For episode 3 of Vicious Varsity I'm joined by William Hanson - the UK's leading etiquette coach, best selling author and co-host of the enormously popular podcast "Help I Sexted My Boss" We discuss the 1989 Brad Pitt lead slasher - Cutting Class. With its clumsy exposition and noble attemps at satire, this late 80s Trashterpiece had Brain Rot written all over it. Toodles! ————
Introduction: When my good friend and fellow podcaster and radio host Kenzo Shibata hit me up and told me that he felt 1989 was the greatest year in film history, I thought that was a bold claim. Sure, I knew the original Michael Keaton *Batman* hit theaters that year, but beyond that, the details were a bit fuzzy. For many of us, especially those who came of age during the rise of home video, the lines between what was in theaters, what went straight to video, and what aired on cable often blur together. 1989 was a pivotal year—a moment when the cinematic landscape was rapidly changing, and the home video market was beginning to dominate how we consumed movies. The year 1989 revitalized the superhero genre with Batman, saw Patrick Swayze transition from Dirty Dancing to playing the zen-like badass Dalton in Roadhouse, and introduced us to A-list actor Brad Pitt in the indie slasher Cutting Class. Christian Slater stepped into the spotlight as a teenage skateboarding detective in Gleaming the Cube, while Wes Craven tried to franchise another horror icon with Shocker. Horror and comedy were in full swing that year, with Weekend at Bernie's giving us everyone's favorite dead uncle, and Disney making waves with The Little Mermaid. Robin Williams showcased his dramatic range in Dead Poets Society, while Denzel Washington delivered one of his most iconic scenes in Glory. Many believe that Spike Lee made a powerful statement with Do the Right Thing (I'm still trying to figure out what that “statement” is?), and James Spader broke away from his typical high school villain roles in Sex, Lies, and Videotape. Not to mention, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg brought us the third installment of the Indiana Jones franchise. And that's just scratching the surface! So, grab your popcorn, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show! We'll be diving deep into the films of 1989, exploring every genre, every standout performance, and every iconic scene. And don't forget—we'll be opening up the phone lines in the Champagne Room for you to chime in with your thoughts. What films did we miss? What's your favorite from this era? The lads head back to highschool to take a good hard look Brad Pitt's one and only slasher film, 1989's Cutting Class. Quick spoiler, his performance on the Basketball court is not good, but how does his youthful acting performance stack up. They also quickly run through what they have been watching recently.
*More Bonus content from the Non-Editors Talking About Editing series* Zak Stoltz is the brilliant VFX supervisor known for his work on Everything Everywhere All at Once and an all-around excellent motion graphics artist and director. Zak introduced me to Paul Rogers, the Oscar-winning editor of Everything Everywhere and former Cutting Class guest, and I thought it would be interesting to hear a little bit from his side about working on that film. Plus he's worked with The Daniels for ages including on the Turn Down For What music video so there's a bit more crossover. Great convo, Great guy. Enjoy. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cuttingclass/support

On the eighth day of Pitts-mas, a killer gave to me, a slasher movie. Cutting Class. I've seen this one before! I completely misremembered who the killer was. Donovan Leitch gets out of the mental institution for killing his dad and returns to school. Someone is killing off people at that school. Brad Pitt plays the kinda monstrous boyfriend of a girl everyone sexually harasses. What on earth is happening? Who did this? Why is Leitch's hair sooooooo horrible? Is this a comedy? A satire? Maybe find out some of those things on this episode of We Doing Filmographies, Brad Pitt-style! When the director of some of the juiciest modern horror films came to us with Ferris Bueller as his "feeling seen" pick, we were surprised and intrigued. John Hughes' fun-loving and beloved (except by the principal) truant, as played by Matthew Broderick, is the ultimate main character. And while William Brent Bell might not crave the spotlight, he has a surprising amount in common with young Ferris. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about books from the authors who we've had on the show this year: Manuel Betancourt (THE MALE GAZED), Anna Bogutskaya (UNLIKEABLE FEMALE CHARACTERS), Kyle Turner (THE QUEER FILM GUIDE), Malachi Moore (HAUNTED REELS).LORD OF MISRULE is available in Theaters and On Demand on Dec 8, 2023.New FEELING SEEN Merch!***"All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it's just not that good. It's trying to be. It has potential. But your taste -- your taste is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting creative work went through years of this. Our work doesn't have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this." - Ira Glass***With Jordan Crucchiola and William Brent Bell
Hey everybody, welcome to the Bonus Round of Season 1 of Cutting Class. As I mentioned at the end of Jen Dean's episode I'm doing something a little different with these bonus episodes and I'm hoping it proves to be interesting and of value to you: I'm speaking with non-editors about editing. People who work closely with editors and likely have never really expressed out loud some of their feelings about editing and editors. And first up is really top notch: Crystal Moselle is the celebrated director of The Wolfpack, Sophia, The Skate Kitchen and HBO's Betty. And though she is a director she does have some editing experience. Also since we talk a good amount about it, a little refresher: The Wolfpack is the 2015 documentary about the Angulo family, whose seven children were confined to their lower east side apartment by their overbearing father. They learned about the outside world through watching films. On one of their few breakaways from they home Crystal ran into them and struck up a friendship then began filming them for many years. The result was Crystal's debut film which ended up winning the Grand Jury prize at Sundance and was bought by Magnolia Pictures and the rest is history. Stay tuned for more of these bonus episodes. [School of Movies 2023] An absolute landmark in terms of stop-motion animation within cinema. Conceived in the early 80s by Disney animator Tim Burton and manifesting first in an 11-minute poem after the style of both A Visit from St. Nicholas by Clement Clarke Moore and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas from Doctor Seuss. That was developed into this oddball story of a pale loner of an outsider (who is also wildly popular because of course he is, this is Tim Burton). The skeleton king of Halloween town falls in love with the unfamiliar and delightful trappings of Christmas itself. This leads him into drumming up the spooky but hapless monster people of his realm into crafting their OWN Christmas, with all kinds of horrors! Our guest tonight has literally written a thesis on stop-motion, and we have been waiting for him to record this show. It launches almost exactly at the 30-year anniversary of the movie. Coming this weekend we have a Cutting Class episode on Patreon with all the material that didn't make this final edit. And if you're on the lookout for Halloween reading, my Lady Dracula novel "Castle of the Moon" will be available to buy in Paperback form (as well as the eBook version on Patreon) Guests: Toby Jungius @TJungius of Through the Wind Door

Jen Dean is a NY-based commercial editor and mother with a sharp eye, a quick wit and a love for Texan psych rock. After studying under Stan Brakhage she got her start at Lost Planet as Hank Corwin's assistant, eventually moving on to cut her own award-winning projects from fashion to comedy to docu style and everything in between. She's an editor's editor and has been in this edit world for long enough to be known and respected by anyone and everyone who's also been around long enough to know anything. When I began this podcast and the accompanying instagram I reposted an image of Thelma Schoonmaker on the IG and multiple people, including former guest Kimmy Dubé, quickly responded that the woman Thelma was with was also a legend herself, Jen Dean. So I swiftly got Jen's contact and tried and failed to land an interview for many months and then the conversation drifted away; so Jen was my white whale for this season and I couldn't close it out without her. And I'm so glad she was finally able to make time for me because we had a great chat. We're avoiding hugs this week, maniacs, as we dive into the 1980 toxic waste PSA that is The Children. Bringing us this weird slice of 80s horror are the hosts of Drive-In Asylum, Bill Van Ryn and Sam Panico. While we dissect the flick, we also discuss topics such as standard procedure for dealing with abandoned buses, old-time industry nicknames that sound like giallo film titles, and apple routes. And in true crossover fashion, Sam shares a movie-related cocktail recipe towards the end of the episode! Drop that Caramello and check out our Patreon! We resurrected an old bonus favorite and put together a mixtape draft of songs from teen comedy movies. For as little as $2 a month you can get in on the action as well with bonus episodes, Discord privileges, livestreams, exclusive merchandise and more! Want more discussions on killer kids? In the 1880's there was a group of settlers going to Califorina...The Donner Party...They were stranded and left for dead, they ate their leather products and eventually each other... Fast forward and the souls of those on the terrible mountain pass are reborn and absolutely soul ground into a Thrash metal master band: THE DONNER PARTY!!! Their latest album, "Cutting Class" was released in June 2023 by friend of The Metal Forge, Paul Caravasi from Soulgrinder Zine. His new venture Soulgrinder Records is ramping up and this is just the start! Jason Gardner is back this week with a new studio instrument... I had the chance to shoot the shit with Ross, the singer/guitar of The Donner Party at their album release party for their new album "Cutting Class". The album is out on Soulgrinder Records and it's the new labels debut release. It's a great interview with an absolutely killer band and hang around at the end to hear the a track off the new album "Mondo America". --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/metalbeerand-bs/message
[School of Movies 2023] Part III of the Coen Brothers series. In 1998 they pulled together what might in fact be their most beloved film for fans of their oeuvre. Definitely the most eminently quotable, by virtue of a script that is almost a musical in terms of how often phrases and lines are repeated and reprised, layering absurdity upon each scenario and impeccably delivered by an astonishing cast. It follows a California layabout named Jeffrey Lebowski who is mistaken for a local philanthropist of the same name. Chaos ensues. Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, David Huddleston, Steve Buscemi, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Elliott, Peter Stormare, John Turturro and Tara Reid all play eccentric characters in this sly parody of a film noir kidnapping mystery. One where pretty much everyone is far less competent than they are pitching to the world. It's a real "No One Knows What They're Doing" scenario, as FilmJoy might say. Some folks are baffled as to why it's so vociferously beloved, so we have attempted to convey that here. Sharon and I rambled like crazy over two delirious recording sessions, and I wound up trimming out 45+ minutes of utter crap that isn't worth saving for a Cutting Class. This is why mere synopsising and vaguely commenting on why a scenario is funny does not constitute critique for me. Luckily, what remained in place, and what I was able to editorialise after the fact, I am proud of. Next time around, a double-bill of period musicals, both of which also contain John Goodman SCREAMING!

Albemarle County will use a new grant to try out what it hopes will be a better way of providing public transportation. There's a killer on the loose but he's only targeting staff and students of a particular high school. One of Brad Pitts first major roles! What is this, survival class??? IG, Twitter & TikTok: @DesertGoblinMC Email: DesertGoblinMC@gmail.com www.DesertGoblinMC.com
For week three of A September of School Scares, it's CUTTING CLASS, starring Jill Schoelen, Donavan Leitch, and Brad Pitt. It is with tremendous difficulty that I write this introduction, as it is not only Charlie Glover's final appearance on the podcast, but it was also the last time I had the chance to speak with him. Charlie was a good guy with a kind heart. I hope that wherever he is, he's finally at peace. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/blindragepod/message

Michaela spends a lot of time lurking around a high school targeted by a slasher in Cutting Class (1989), starring Brad Pitt in his first major role. Jill Schoelen (The Stepfather) stars as a pretty senior stalked by, well, everyone, as a psycho killer thins out the cast. Listen as we visit the school of sex crimes, detail the best way to be a professional lurker, and try to decide if the movie is a comedy or a horror movie on this week's exciting episode! Justin and Chris are back...finally! Welcome to Episode 31. Many apologies for the delay in releasing a new episode. Good ole COVID, and other things, caused some delays but now the boys are back with a fun new episode. Do you like Brad Pitt? Do you like Donovan? Maybe his son? Then you're in for a treat! Chris' pick for this month was none other than the wonderful 80s slasher film Cutting Class. The film marks Brad Pitt's first feature film and stars the son of musician Donovan. Need there be more? Grab those beverages, friends. This one is fun!
