"Because there was once a god who walked the Earth named Warren Oates." - Richard Linklater Friendly, feisty, fresh, and so-very funny, Bright Wall/Dark Room staff writer & contributing editor Travis Woods is as passionate about film as he is endearingly supportive of all who love it. The host & creator of producer Blake Howard's podcast Increment Vice (which took a look at Paul Thomas Anderson's INHERENT VICE one scene at a time), Travis has also contributed physical media commentary tracks &/or video essays for a few of his favorite films of all time, including the recent Imprint Films release of BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA starring his favorite actor (& raison d'être), Mr. Warren Oates. Joining me to preach the gospel of Oates in his thoughtful, sometimes philosophical, & always entertaining laid-back style, my Pandemic Movie Club buddy & I go deep on the films TWO-LANE BLACKTOP, THE HIRED HAND, DILLINGER, COCKFIGHTER, & BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA. Likely just the first installment on Oates since we stuck with the first half of the '70s, fans of the actor will undoubtedly flip for this feature-length conversation on one of both serious cinephiles' & great filmmakers from Peckinpah to Malick's most beloved screen presences. It is spooky season and our first Hallowe'en month guest is X and Pearl writer-director and cinema devotee Ti West, who joins hosts Gemma and Slim to talk about four films that influenced his movie-making career: Bad Taste, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Two-Lane Blacktop, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. We also attempt to squeeze Ti for details on MaXXXine, and he tells us some Pearl tales, including how that final shot came about. Plus: being a Hollywood outsider, the movies that give us permission to be filmmakers, our demands for a Pearl-trilogy theme park, Ti's defence of Spielberg's West Side Story, rubbing shoulders with Peter Jackson, the best moment in cinema ever that involves Indiana Jones, the greatest tagline in cinema ever, why Gemma is obsessed with maggots, and what made Slim cry this week. The show begins as it always does. Scott got a job and he doesn't know how to feel about it. Luke would kill for a job he could skate at. Mike recalls a relative easy job he could skate by at for awhile. Of course rehab and failing others are involved. Cold call sales jobs, they're the worst, right?! Telemarketing comes up and supposedly one dude made 400 calls per hour or per day. It's unclear but neither are absurd. Luke witnessed embezzlement at a young age when he worked at Staples and then suddenly Mike's girlfriend pops in! How do you determine if a person looks like someone famous? The fellas dissect doppelgangers versus similar looking people. Scott has a serious issue with January Jones and her thousand yard stare. Luke says his favorite move is Oh Lucky Man, but Mike thought it was Two-Lane Blacktop. Of course Scott starts talking about Warren Oates. Luke loves Alan Price. There are some poor sound clips mixed in from the movie in the meantime. It turns out Trump and Fred Durst are very similar. Sam Harris nailed it perfectly a couple years ago about why Trump is so appealing to the every day person. CKY and Disengage The Simulator come up after Break Stuff starts a musical discussion. We have one email from Mr. Pink this week. He brings up the Mar-A-Lago raid which we hadn't thought of at all until the email. Olivia Newton-John died and Scott has to put the death of celebrities in context once more. Nobody cares says John Scott. We decided to close the show with Two Gunslingers by Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers. If any of this nonsense inspires you for better or for worse, email the show at isitsafepod@gmail.com
This week's Pop Screen is for people who like their cars fast, their movies mellow and their Californian singer-songwriters practically horizontal, as Aidan returns to the podcast to look at Monte Hellman's cult road movie Two-Lane Blacktop. A none-more-70s tale of dead-end lives on the open road, it owes something of its laid-back cool to its two lead actors: Laurel Canyon mainstay James Taylor and Beach Boys alumnus Dennis Wilson. It would be fair to say Aidan and Graham have differing opinions on this film, but you'll have to listen to the podcast to find out who's making the case for the defence. Along the way, there's space to delve into the short, sad life of their brilliant co-star Laurie Bird and praise the timeless class of Warren Oates and Harry Dean Stanton. Also, needless to say, Beach Boys superfan Graham explains what very specific thing Dennis brought to the legendary band, and which unlikely figure offered family therapy to the Wilson brothers... We're talking about Tokyo Drift (and just about every other movie and every actor and director) with Alex Jacobs! After a quick reminder to vote on the 2 Fast 2 Forever Hall of Fame (cageclub.me/bracket), we open mail that lets us know we get cars wrong a lot before running into a traffic jam on a boat in the 2 Fast 2 Furious Minute (20:55). Then, Alex joins us to talk about Tokyo Drift, his favorite Fast and Furious movie (36:35). He talks about crafting the Drift Date sleepwave for Racer Trash, his main issue with where the franchise has gone (and the way to fix it), and a new plan to spread the Teriyaki Boyz gospel. We also talk about whether or not Fast & Furious is still an "underdog" at the box office, F&F inclusions in Racer Trash films, and an abundance of nail-based metaphors in Tokyo Drift. There's an exciting twist in the character game! List of non-F&F things we talk about (because there are a lot): Justin Lin's Annapolis, JJ Abrams in pitch meetings, Star Trek, the Twilight franchise, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Two-Lane Blacktop, Sunshine, Alex Garland, Jessie Buckley, David Cronenberg and Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, Lightyear (for some reason), Watcher and V/H/S/94 and Chloe Okuno, terrible Blu-ray menus on Universal discs, and 90s point-and-click computer games. Highway Without Horizon: Monte Hellman's Two-Lane Blacktop This week, Mr. Chavez & I sit down to discuss a seminal film of the 1970s, Monte Hellman's Two-Lane Blacktop. Featuring musical icons, James Taylor and Brian Wilson (as, respectively, The Driver & The Mechanic), Laurie Bird, and the great character actor, Warren Oates as GTO. There's not a whole lot I can put into this description, but I will give my all . . . Ibrahim & I are thrilled to be discussing a cult classic that has only grown more powerful and enduring as the years have gone by. There's a whole lot packed into this story of a cross (or mid) country race between Taylor's The Driver, his co-pilot The Mechanic (Brian Wilson) and Warren Oates's GTO. An existential look at men and their need to bury themselves in car culture, speed, and mythology. We cover a lot of bases and are thrilled that you are joining us on this incredible ride. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com Many Thaks!

It's time for Season 5 folks. It's time for regular cinema again. It's time...for whatever they want to bring. That's right. The boys can watch and discuss any film, from any genre, this time around. While Chris could definitely bring the rough content to your ears and eyeballs, he changed things up and offered a winner of an easygoing film for the season premiere. Its about classic cars, drag racing, and youth counterculture in the early 70s. And what a cool film it is. The boys are discussing Monte Hellman's Two-Lane Blacktop. Apologies all around for the tardiness in releasing the episode. Next month, it's back to the normal releasing schedule. No apologies for the awesome tangents...those are a gift. So please sit back, relax and enjoy James Taylor in his only acting role. In 1971, the masterful director Monte Hellman headed out onto Route 66 with a script by Rudy Wurlitzer, a 55 Chevy, a Driver, a Mechanic, a Girl, an "Orbit Orange" Pontiac GTO and created a masterpiece. Join us for this completely unique film that only Monte Hellman could deliver. No race car driving or mechanic experience needed.
We're heading back to Jason Statham's first on-screen role with patron Lane Middleton's pick of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels! Before we talk about all things Guy Ritchie and "Bacon", Joe tells us how his dad went full Two-Lane Blacktop before we chat about the new episode of The Endgame (Season 1, Episode 2) and dive into the 2 Fast 2 Furious Minute (25:00) to see the down-and-back race kick off. Then, we dive into Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (39:00) and compare it to later Guy Ritchie movies, other 90s indie movies, and more. We talk about Statham's film debut, Sting, Tom Cruise, "Channing Table", and more issues with smells in movies. We also uncover the origin of why Deckard hates Hobbs. Joe asks himself, "What is Dracula?" and mistakes a movie shot in Pittsburgh for a British film. Email us: family@cageclub.me Visit our Patreon page at patreon.com/2fast2forever. Revisiting things a few years later can be perilous and More American Graffiti is maybe a very good example of this. Even lacking most of the creative team from the first movie American Graffiti still manages to spawn a weird alternate reality sequel to American Graffiti (1973) that comes out a year later called The Hollywood Knights. Knight Time is the Right Time Of the two, The Hollywood Knights is the much more beloved. In writing this episode description I finally cracked the code. I was shocked that an uncredited writer for Two-Lane Blacktop and Aloha, Bobby and Rose would end up making this movie however Floyd Mutrux worked at Second City and, realistically, The Hollywood Knights feels like a very produced graduation improv show where they find a story somewhere in there among all the antics. This movie 100% has Hot Rod credentials. I mentioned Project X and I had known it mostly as a Hot Rod Magazine car because Popular Hot Rodding was on the decline but it, indeed, was the car of Popular Hot Rodding for some time. All of these brands have been eaten up by Motortrend, it seems. The T bucket "rail job" was a cool and very authentic car that rarely shows up in movies. More Isn't Better I wish it was, though. There was some heart and thought put into this movie but I think that the hand of Lucas weighed heavily on the steering wheel of development and production. We can, in hindsight, see that it was inevitable as we've seen the saga of Star Wars but it's unfortunate that it had to be that way. Bill Norton didn't have a prolific credited writing career but was a journeyman TV director. He wouldn't necessarily show up on the list of people who would push back on that as More American Graffiti was at an early point in his directorial career. In a weird tie-in to car movies in general, Monte Hellman was assistant director to Bill Norton on Cisco Pike (1971). Milner was racing what we, today, call a "sling shot" and wearing those masks to not die from the nitromethane fumes was definitely an eye-catcher. Racing was wild back then but these racing scenes, for the most part, are very staged and slow. Other movies have done racing much better (even American Graffiti) but I guess they saved it up for that one last shot. Filming everything for Milner at the track makes it basically a "bottle episode" so I guess that was one way to save some money. Music Matters So the commonality here is the music. A ton of hits. An actual ton. More American Graffiti definitely goes into the later protest songs and hippy movement music while The Hollywood Knights stays in the pockets with The Beach Boys, Jan and Dean (the other The Beach Boys), The Four Seasons, The Chiffons, The Supremes, etc). I think THK shows a bit more range, culturally, than More American Graffiti (which very dedicated to Vietnam and its protests) especially when Newbomb Turk farts "Volare". Interestingly, and I hope it was intentional because I, in my head canon, really want this connection to be real and strong, The Hollywood Knights ends with Martha & The Vandellas' "Heat Wave" and More American Graffiti opens with Martha & The Vandellas' "Heat Wave". For the Audio Enthusiasts Used the WA-47 Jr (cardioid pattern) on the UA Volt 276 with the compressor and vintage modes on. No additional compression was used on the main part of the episode (there was limiting on the whole thing but it was fairly conservative). Stereo section was Rode M5s into a Zoom F6. There was severe wind noise so I cut out a lot of the low end. I did need to run a little bit of voice de-noise because I guess I wasn't speaking very loud and the noise levels around me were wild. The errata part was a Rode VideoMic Go II and I did get rid of some room tone on that one as well. Thanks for listening. Rate, like, and bell that smash for subscribe.

We bring out the Hellman's on this episode of the podcast as we look at two from Monte Hellman. We start off with the controversial 1974 movie "Cockfighter" and follow it up with the metaphorical masterpiece "Two Lane Blacktop" from 1971. Both films feature Warren Oates, Laurie Bird and Harry Dean Stanton, all turning in strong performances. Cockfighter follows a deliberately mute Oates as he competes in a series of cockfights across the south, in pursuit of respect and love. It's tough to watch at times and confounded us with some of its choices. Two Lane Blacktop, on the other hand, is a wonder. With a deliberate pace and subtext galore, it is making statements left and right. It also features very impressive performances from two musicians, James Taylor and Dennis Wilson. We then proceed to our lists of other things we've been watching. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. You can also reach us on Facebook, Instagram andTwitter.

Two filmmakers' filmmakers, ones who both honed their craft in '60s low-budget B drive-thru movies before achieving gradual and undeniable acclaim, died this past week: Monte Hellman and Richard Rush. I'm joined by Ted Haycraft to discuss Hellman's most celebrated film and, arguably, Rush's most interesting one. On this episode we discuss:- how Two-Lane was greenlit in the wake of Easy Rider, only to be abandoned by the studio on release and for decades after;- its European vibe as a race movie where no one wants to win;- the chiseled minimalism of its screenplay by Rudy Wulitzer;- Warren Oates' rambling, engaged performance;- and Hellman's varied resume, including everything from RoboCop to Head to Reservoir Dogs to an added prologue for the network television premiere of A Fistful of Dollars in 1977.Also:- If Richard Rush invented the technique of racking focus;- how Getting Straight is depressingly still relevant today;- my seesawing views on this admittedly literate film over repeated viewings;- and whether or not the movie is speaking for itself through Harry (Elliott Gould) when he's yelling at women who talk back to him.Haycraft is film critic for Evansville's WFIE-14 and co-hosts Cinema Chat on its Midday show. He can also be found on Cinema Chat's Facebook page.Two-Lane Blacktop is not currently streaming or available on VOD. Physical media is available from Criterion.Getting Straight is available on VOD, with physical media is available from Sony.

The boys start off by covering the passing of Monte Hellman, who was involved in the making of Ray's favorite car movie, "Two Lane Blacktop", then the talk turns to repair and restoration topics. Chris ponders how to best mount rocker panel molding on his big Chrysler and gets plenty of caller suggestions. Ray talks about the 64 Caddy project and the need to decipher the brake problems the project Mustang is encountering. Just another week on MotorMouth Radio!

Your boys Mike, Matt, Scott and Luke are back for more of the top-notch nonsense that you crave. The guys stroll down memory lane back to the 2000s as they listen to David Cross rip apart the issues of that era. Scott hates Marvel and doesn't think it's cool to watch wrestling as an adult. Ryan Gosling is getting old and his best work is yet to come still, according to Matt. Do you still own VHS copies? Luke is looking to buy the Criterion edition of Two Lane Blacktop. Mike shares his cherished Oliver Stone collection with the audience while also giving everybody a crypto currency update. Even though David Foster Wallace is cancelled, the End of the Tour ignites the truth behind why many males had Infinite Jest on their nightstand. Blind Melon wrote a song about somebody falling off of the esteemed Detroit concert venue St. Andrew's Hall. Luke and Mike go back in time to recall the power that Matchbox 20 and The Barenaked Ladies held over college party goers in 1998-99. We learn from Matt what Jangle Pop is. Enjoy the new experience. Finally, will Miguel Cabrera hit 500 home runs and 3000 hits by the end of the season? Give us your thoughts on any of this nonsense by emailing us at isitsafepod@gmail.com
Episode's a little on the shorter side and a little low energy because I felt like shit most of the week but hey, that's okay, we still watched some nice movies. This week's movies: Tom and Jerry (2021) The Equalizer (2014) Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) Wind River (2017) Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) Goon: Last of the Enforcers (2017) Game of Death (1978)
In 1971, Monte Hellman cast young unknown Laurie Bird in Two Lane Blacktop, thrusting the orphaned teenager into a Hollywood milieu of opportunists and phonies she wasn't emotionally prepared for. The year before, fellow nonactor Mark Frechette was cast in Michaelangelo Antonioni's Zabriskie Point, and his minor fame and naivete made him the perfect target for cultists looking for a meal ticket. This week, Doug Woychechowsky joins us to talk about why the story of two young aspiring actors who met a tragic fate would make a great movie about the movie world.
An experiment in what constitutes a movie finds James Taylor and Dennis Wilson partnered in a cross country race that resolves (or doesn't) sometime after the last reel burns up.

“Let’s make it fifty” is a phrase that screen writer Rudy Wurlitzer, billed as Hot Rod, says right before he gets one-upped and gets his ass handed to him by James Taylor’s The Driver and Dennis Wilson’s The Mechanic when he races against The Car in Monte Hellman’s iconic 1971 art-house road movie Two-Lane Blacktop. … Continue reading Two-Lane Blacktop
As we continue to kick it old school this lap, we're taking our first detour to a pit stop with 1971's Two-Lane Blacktop, a movie picked for us by Ben Milliman over on our Patreon! If you've never seen this cult classic (watch it! it's a Criterion release!), you could think about Two-Lane Blacktop as, in a way, Race Wars: The Movie. (Except, also, not at all.) In this episode, we follow James Taylor and Dennis Wilson as they race across the country in a beautiful 1955 Chevy Bel-Air coupe. Ain't nothin' more old school than that! We also dive deep into Richard Linklater's love for the movie, its many Fast-nections, and also spend way too much time (again) trying to figure out what Hector's doing in The Fast and the Furious. (Movie conversation begins around 1:06:30.) Email us: family@cageclub.me Visit our Patreon page at patreon.com/2fast2forever. Extra special shout-out to Ben Milliman, Jake Freer, Alex Elonen, and Nick Burris for joining at the “Interpol’s Most Wanted” level or above! Intro music by Nico Vasilo. Interlude and outro music by Wes Hampton.

Connor and Riley are joined by New Zealand cinematographer Nigel Bluck to discuss the cult favorite road film Two-Lane Blacktop. This film stars singer-songwriter James Taylor, and Beach Boy's drummer Dennis Wilson in the lead roles. Nigel gives his unique perspective on the film and why it is poetic in a way unlike most films in the same genre. Six Pack Double Feature Presents: Pick 6, Bonus Summer Edition Where Travis and Nathan give you their Top 5 list, and then add one more. Special guest Brain Detail Specialist, Jimmy James joins the guys in studio to share some of his favorite movie vehicles. We unintentionally mess up some of the details on a couple of the cars mentioned and then we take an American Singer-Songwriter legend and wedge him into a movie that he's never been in. Please take a look at the corrections at the bottom of the podcast notes for mote details. Lastly, the guys answer a listener-submitted Chaser at the end of the episode. Films discussed in this episode: Beverly Hills Cop (1970 Chevrolet Nova) Star Wars (Imperial Tie Fighter, Millennium Falcon) Batman '67 (The Bat-copter) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1971 Chevrolet Impala Convertible) Back to the Future, Part II (Mattel Hot Pink Hoverboard) 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (The Nautilus) Goldfinger/Thunderball (1963 Aston Martin DB5) - i Vanishing/Death Proof (1970 Dodge Challenger) - ii, iii National Lampoon's Vacation (1983 Ford Wagon Queen Family Truckster) The Blues Brothers (1974 Dodge Monaco) Christine (1958 Plymouth Fury) The Living Daylights (1987 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante) American Graffiti (1932 Ford Coupe) Return of the Jedi (Speeder Bikes) Herbie: The Love Bug (1963 Volkswagen Beetle) Jaws (1975 Chevrolet Blazer) Bullitt (1968 Mustang GT 390) ---CORRECTIONS--- The Aston Martin DB5 was featured in GOLDFINGER and THUNDERBALL. James mentions the DB7, which was not in production until 1994. The Dodge Challenger was released in 1969. James mentions the year 1967, which is incorrect. Stuntman Mike's car from DEATH PROOF was a 1969 Dodge Charger that had a duck hood ornament. Stuntman Mike also had a 2nd car, which was a 1970 Chevy Nova that was featured in the first half of the film. The Dodge Challenger featured in both DEATH PROOF and VANISHING POINT is from 1970. So, this one is completely FUBAR'd, but in all honesty, we feel it's not that important to the quality of episode as a whole. Also, we don't really care. James Taylor was not in the movie VANISHING POINT. He was, however, in the 1971 movie TWO-LANE BLACKTOP, which was also centered around cars and racing. We ask our listeners to please accept our sincerest apologies if you are in fact a car guy (or gal), because we don't want to be presumptive. Apparently some of us did not do enough research before laying claim to the accuracy of these vehicles. Or the fact that Nathan mixed up two car movies and which one that James Taylor starred in, let alone the fact that he still hasn't seen either film. Copyright 2019 | Klopek Media
It's Matt and Mark's 7th Anniversary of doing the podcast, and for this go 'round we finish up with our 70's car movie theme with the artsy Two-Lane Blacktop. With a set of steamy hunky rock n' rollers racing about in a built out 55' Chev, this is as American as it gets... or is it? TLB has been debated as a 'metaphor' due to the sparseness of its character sketches (if they can even be called sketches at all), but what they're a metaphor for and what archetypes they represent are not obvious or clear. In the end, we don't really know these characters other than what meaning we graft on to them. Despite it's subtext, the film captures the early 70's zeitgeist of the post-Love era, which if anything, is an interesting cultural time more and more alien to us 21st Century folks.Download: 293 Two-Lane Blacktop

So, yes - we are live on Patreon now - and thank you, thank you, thank you for the support so far! It's freaking awesome and we'll use the proceeds to keep the show in full production hands (i.e. pay Bernie), plus buy speed parts for two Chargers. You can jump in by visiting www.patreon.com/kfshow. Here's the Dukes Review: In our last show Finnegan got what he had always wanted: A review of Two Lane Blacktop. This time, it's Kibbe's turn for joy filled senselessness; a Star Trek the Next Generation crossover episode with the Dukes! Well, not quite that, but close-ish. This is the first episode of Season 4 of the Dukes of Hazzard and the guest star is none other than Johanthan Frakes, Commander Riker himself. Commander Riker plays the part of a nephew to Boss Hogg, and as a Hogg relative Commander Riker must steal and connive his way through life. It's in his blood. Anyway, he fulfills his Star Fleet destiny by counterfeiting money, putting it into boxes of "grits", and then falling into love with Daisy Duke and getting her to marry him to avoid the eventual damning legal testimony issue he'll have in court when he gets caught. It fails, Daisy is shunned, the General Lee jumps, and Riker gets beamed back up to the Enterprise (not true, but wouldn't have that been super awesome)? MeUndies is also back to sponsor this episode...and just in comfort ball cuddling time! We have also figured out what we're going to do for Patreon supporters and you'll hear about in an upcoming episode. You can go hear to add to the mix: www.patreon.com/kfshow. Thank you again!! In this episode of the show we finally reviewed the movie Two Lane Blacktop, a movie that Finnegan's been wanting to hit since we started. Without a doubt this is the last piece of the cinematic puzzle that makes Mike...well, Mike. It's a movie that has clearly influenced him greatly not because it's a fantastic comedy or anything, but because it's about two guys running the country in a homebuilt gasser '55 Chevy. In their lives that's all there is, it's all they need, and all they want. Or is it? Along with way they pick up a random hitchhiker girl who (like the two guys) has no apparent backstory and no dreams going forward. They race an older guy - cross country - in a '70 GTO Judge who is as philosophical as he is total crackpot wacko. There's a ton a dialogue in this movie, yet there's nearly none at the exact same time. This was done in the era of movie making where sometimes the plot and meaning was a secret known only to the writer and director...and Finnegan freaking loves it. In fact he loves it so much that his favorite car ever is a '55 Chevy gasser named Blasphemi. Kibbe has decided that the psyche of Finnegan is made up of a very simple equation, and once you understand it you'll have unlocked the key to Mike's brain, soul, and car: Two Lane Blacktop + Better Off Dead + The Dukes of Hazzard + Spaceballs = Mike Finnegan And finally, Stamps.com is back in this episode as a show sponsor! Talented actress and cutting-edge indie producer Melissa Hellman was born into THE BIZ. Her father is the great film director Monte Hellman, and the second man to hold her as a baby was Jack Nicholson. Melissa joins us to discuss the importance of art, the reasons why she isn't allowed to ride motorcycles, and what it was like to be a 7-year-old actress on the set of the legendary cult classic, TWO-LANE BLACKTOP.
Tonight, we are in the home of the road. Might not have been invented there, but there is arguably no country that has embraced the road like the good old US of A. And Hollywood noticed, resulting in one of the most recognisable movie genres, the road movie. Tonight we have screwball comedy on the road in the 30s, existential youth culture on the road in the 70s, and Girl power on a crime spree on the road in the 90s. It’s going to be fun, Welcome to They Don’t Make ‘Em Like they Used To.
Chay Collins discusses the romanticism of other eras through their technologies and their deaths. Films mentioned in order: Two-Lane Blacktop (Monte Hellman, 1971) Inherent Vice (Paul-Thomas Anderson, 2014) Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese, 1976) Midnight in Paris (Woody Allen, 2011) The Royal Tenenbaums (Wes Anderson, 2001) The Grand Budapest Hotel (Wes Anderson, 2014)
In the early 1970's, outlaw culture was at its height and car chase movies with jarring endings were all the rage - Like Vanishing Point and Two Lane Blacktop, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry is a chase movie with an outlaw protagonist, fueled by Detroit muscle. James and Sid are joined by the Educated Redneck Dan Ellison, a touring comic who knows his cars and has plenty of insight about what life was like when this movie came out. What was the true lesson of this movie? Are we supposed to root for the outlaw? And how about those cars - a sleeper Chevy Impala and a flamboyant Dodge Charger steal every scene in this movie. Joe Leonardo visits Only the Best for Hayden Maxwell and watches the counter culture road trip classic Two-Lane Blacktop starring James Taylor and Dennis Wilson from The Beach Boys. We had a great time and a great chat!
For this episode of Reels and Wheels, Sid and James are joined by legendary automotive journalist Phil Greden, AKA Murilee Martin! Two Lane Blacktop is easily one of the greatest car movies of all time and Phil gives Sid and James quite an education on the climate of the time - 1970, the peak of the muscle car era. So what's really going on in this movie? What's everyone's theory on the strange ending? How do we place it all in historical context? Listen to one of our most fascinating episodes yet as Phil Greden tells some excellent stories and demostrates his vast knowledge of the cars and the players. This episode is required listening for any car buff. Want to learn more about Phil Greden? Visit www.murileemartin.com! Follow Reels and Wheels on Twitter @ReelsandWheels. While Michaela is on a dream vacation to Hawaii, Stevil and Matty decided to bring in Demigod Rob and J.J. Webb for a road trip show. The boys all confirm their fan boy anticipation for the new Star Wars movie as the secondary title of The Force Awakens is announced. There is a major multitude of both awkward and warranted erections over the new Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer and nobody but Stevil even cares about Furious 7. These are our Staff Picks of the Week. Matty brings some awesome zombie goodness with a Nazi twist, as his Staff Pick for the week is Dead Snow 2: Red Vs. Dead. Following up the fantastically insane, gory and funny first film, Tommy Wirkola returns for more fun that got him some international attention, this time with some American cast. They also sew a zombie arm onto the main character. Awesome, right? http://youtu.be/glIoXwTcG60 Stevil perused Netflix and came across a gem of a documentary that had eluded him in theaters and he just got around to checking it out. Jodorowsky's Dune is about the greatest movie that never was and, even unproduced and in storyboard form, influenced everything we've seen since in mainstream blockbuster film and will see glimpses of it for years to come. http://youtu.be/4WWu1kclNDA Due to Stevil recommending Jodorowsky's Dune to him immediately after watching it, Demigod Rob watched it himself and continued down the Jodo rabbit hole and picked up his latest film, the first in 23 years, The Dance of Reality. It's a semi autobiographical film starring two of his sons. Captivating and disturbing, Rob says this is a must watch. http://youtu.be/LViGerHOA28 JJ hit the theaters is a big bad way and gives us a couple of must see movies on the big screen right now. For an honorable mention, JJ says Nightcrawler is a gripping and well shot film with the best performance from Jake Gyllenhaal he's ever given. For his main pick JJ urges everyone to check out John Wick. as per usual KeanuReeves isn't the greatest actor but what he does deliver is action and in that regard it's a different style than we are used to out of this magnanimous and generous actor. Yes, it's agreed, we all want to be best friends with the guy. http://youtu.be/u1uP_8VJkDQ http://youtu.be/C0BMx-qxsP4 For the main subject of our episode on road trip films, our panel explains why they made their choices: "I've made it a goal to start picking movies I have never seen before. When the topic of road trip's came up, I saw an opportunity to pick Ridley Scott's Thelma and Louise. As a huge fan of this director, it was very disappointing to have to sit through a movie he only did for a paycheck and it's obvious. From a shitty script (which won an Oscar. Huh?) to really stupid main characters, I should have waited and brought a good Ridley movie." - @mattydub604 http://youtu.be/PRr0HY9MPZ0 "Oh man, how do I even explain this insanity I put everyone through for this episode. Well, it starts off innocently. David Lynch announced that we're getting more Twin Peaks in 2016, which, as a massive fan of the series, put me into Lynch mode. Wild At Heart is the film that this crazy director made during the first season of the acclaimed series. A good number of the shows cast appear in small roles but our leads are the real gems here. Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern are so grandiose in their terrible performances that it's hard not to watch this movie. And that Willem Dafoe exit? Wow." - @thestevildead http://youtu.be/7uRJartX79Q "Is it a race through the southern states, an argument over bought versus built with love or an existentialist odyssey about obsession? Whatever it is, Monte Helman created the ultimate gearhead film with Two-Lane Blacktop. Though overlooked on it's initial run and missing from home release for close to 30 years, this movie still has to be seen." - @demigodrob http://youtu.be/yPbqV9CgV9s "Beautiful American landscapes, a man on the run from the law, and a sexy 70s Challenger are just some of the aspects that make Vanishing Point one of the greatest road trip movies of all time. Add those with the films quiet, yet memorable side characters, and an ending that is still philosophically debated today, and you can see why I chose this film to discuss.." - @hesthejage http://youtu.be/62UEDyEzpXQ What is your favorite road trippin' flick? Do you or did you enjoy our picks? Listen to the episode and let us know what you think in the comments below! We leave you with this fantastic homage to Vanishing Point the super group Audioslave did in their music video for "Show Me How To Live". http://youtu.be/vVXIK1xCRpY
