Satan's Slave (1976), Prey (1977), and Terror (1978) There are a lot of directors out there that might not have a huge filmography, or even be that well known to the general population of film fans, even in the horror genre. So there is always room to discover them! In this episode, we take a look at three films by British independent director Norman J. Warren, who didn't make a lot of films, but we feel the ones he did make, make him a worthy subject for us to discuss. Honestly, it might make sense to read a little about him before diving into the films, or at least, do it afterwards but I think he is a good example of knowing what he had to make what he did, for us, makes them a little more impressive. You'll get blood, you'll get nudity, and a lot more than you'd expect in these three very British tales of horror. Films mentioned in this episode: Batman (1989), Bloody New Year (1987), Curse of the Crimson Alter (1968), The Devil Rides Out (1968), Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972), Dr. Terror's House of Horror (1965), Flesh and Blood Show (1972), The Godsend (1980), Horror Hospital (1973), Horror Planet aka Inseminoid (1981), House by the Cemetery (1981), Night Creatures (1962), Prey (1977), Satan's Slave (1976), Shiver of the Vampire (1971), Suspiria (1977), Thriller: A Cruel Picture (1973), Terror (1978), Tower of Evil (1972), Vampyres (1974)

El Vampiro (1957), The Black Pit of Dr. M (1959), and The Curse of the Crying Woman (1963). Any horror fan worth their weight in blood knows their fare share about the classic monster films from Universal from the 30s and 40s before they died a slow death. But do you know that in the late 50s and early 60s, there was a bunch of classical looking horror films made in Mexico? Looking a lot like their Universal brethen, these Mexican films cranked up the atomsphere (and the fog machines) to 11, using some of the traditional monsters, as well as developing some from their own heritage. Mexican horror films from this era don't seem to get the credit and notoriety that they should. So we're hoping to help change that by covering 3 that we think are pretty damn good. So buckle up, get your pen and notepad ready and get ready to start down a very foggy path into a highly underrated sub-genre. Films mentioned in this espisode: The Brainiac (El barón del terror, 1963) El Vampiro (1957) The Curse of the Crying Woman (La maldición de la Llorona,1963) Black Pit of Dr M (Misterios de ultratumba, 1959) Night of the Bloody Apes (La horripilante bestia humana, 1969) The Vampire's Coffin (El ataud del vampiro, 1958) Curse of the Aztec Mummy (La maldición de la momia Azteca, 1957 Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy (La momia azteca contra el robot humano, 1958) Wrestling Women vs. The Aztek Mummy (Las luchadoras contra la momia, 1964) The Witch's Mirror (El espejo de la bruja, 1964) City of the Dead (1960) Dracula (1931) The Bloody Vampire (El vampiro sangriento, 1962) Invasion of the Vampires (La invasión de los vampiros, 1963) The Curse of Nostradamus (1961) Nostradamus and the Destroyer of Monsters (1962) Genie of Darkness (1962) The Blood of Nostradamus (1962) The Hell of Frankenstein (Orlak, el infierno de Frankenstein, 1960) The Ghost (1963) Black Sunday (1960) The Revived Monster (El Monstruo Resucitado 1953) Psycho (1960) The Living Coffin (1959) Young Frankenstein (1974) Halloween (1978) Frankenstein (1931) Son of Dracula (1943) Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1968)  Boxed sets and film collections:   Magic, Myth & Mutilation: The Micro-Budget Cinema Of Michael J. And as we start planning the Horror Club field trip to Witch-killin’ National park, we also cover… Underwater, frosted eyeshadow, Kevin Smith, Dummy, Flip this Murder House, freshly manicured hedges, so many questions, overly complicated and boring, what the hell is a receiving room, double turn-around twist, Michael Gough, dead… only on the inside, Kristen Stewart, due to the mental illness, slamming her head in a door, talking dogs and sex dolls, they so don’t even wanna talk to you, the ’70s was cool and you know it, duck and roll into the woods, a stately manor, visiting with a time machine, Martin Potter, Anna Kendrick, confused by the elevator, Wilfred, are you trying to get murdered, Candace Glendenning, leaving the ignition on, Quibi, how can this production afford to lose a camera, certain parts of the female anatomy, this movie created love, Barbara Kellerman, I would have constantly been disappointed at the movies, they didn’t get there where they were taking their time, Smarties and it’s protected… or something, Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for the 1976 film "Satan's Slave". But truthfully… there’s not really that much to spoil. “I was mad that someone wasted the film on it.”

Congratulations! If you are reading this stupid description and listening to this stupider podcast, you survived 2020-- or you're a very smart zombie. To celebrate the new year, the theme for January is New Year, New Movies! That's right, and entire month of movie reviews, but do not worry, they are not new in time, just in title. Every film this month with have "New" in its name. To start, Doug and Jake discuss Bloody New Year, a movie with perhaps the best poster ripping off Evil Dead 2 of any in history. This film came out in 1987 and fun fact-- it makes no sense whatsoever. Directed by Norman J. Warren, who also directed Inseminoid, Prey, Satan's Slave, and Terror. The film itself was written by Frazer Pearce, and it is his only writing credit. Bloody New Year features songs by Cry No More, which reminds me-- be sure to send us your favorite poop-related Pat Benetar puns! Doug discusses how this film is potentially cursed, sharing both his experiences and those of a close friend. Is this movie sci fi? A haunted house? A bit of both? We discuss all the possibilities. Then, Ade and Jake talk about New Year's Evil, from 1980. The film was directed by Emmett Alston, and written by Leonard Neubauer. Unlike Bloody New Year, this film is a straightforward slasher film, and it is surprisingly competent, given how early in the slashers boom it was released. Also, they discuss how the film has aged and how the incel antagonist translates to the 21st century audience. They discuss the structure of the film, the kills, and that wonderful Stan Laurel mask from the end. What do you think? Should it have been worn the whole film? If you have not checked out the title track from the film by Shadow, you can find it here: https://bit.ly/3b9tLdV If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com. Once again Adrian Smith returns to the show! This time out we're discussing (at length) one of Norman J. Warren's films – INSEMINOID (1981). Probably the most notorious of the director's horror efforts, it's very poster art was controversial. The movie brings the idea of an alien creature injecting its offspring into a human host for gestation further into the open than even Ridley Scott's classic ALIEN (1979) managed. Coupled with that hideous imagery the film also sports the usual Warren level of blood and gore making this a nasty little viewing experience even by today's standards. Newcomers to the film might be surprised to see some well-known actresses plunging elbow deep into the violent sci-fi exploitation pits. You might also be impressed with how much the cast and crew accomplish on such a small budget.  Adrian is the perfect person to talk about this film as he is responsible for the book about the director included in Indicator's new five film Blu-Ray set ‘Bloody Terror: The Shocking Cinema of Norman J. Warren 1976-1981'. In this informative work he lays out the details of Warren's horror output giving insight into the troubles British productions run into regularly. Often it seems a minor miracle that any of these lower budgeted movies ever got completed. We mostly restrict our comments to INSEMINOID with a fair amount of detailed conversation about the script's problems and the ingenious ways the filmmakers found to overcome unforeseen hazards. We also delve into the bizarre additions and changes made to the story in the film's novelization. Certainly, the choice to shoot mostly on location was a decision that enhanced the look of the film but it was quite hard on the cast. Be aware that we spoil the entire movie as we proceed so, if that's important to you, please go watch it before listening to us debate its relative merits. Adrian and I have very different views on this one so I think you'll find it an interesting show. Oh! And we end things with a new version of the classic song Monster Mash and an extra solo bit of Adrian as he amuses himself while I'm away from the mic.  If you have any comments or questions thebloodypit@gmail.com is the email address. We'd love to hear from you. Posts can also be made on the show's FaceBook page. Thank you for downloading and listening.

We’re spaceward bound this episode, checking out Norman J. Warren’s 1979 interstellar softcore comedy Spaced Out! It’s wildly British (written by the guy who went on to create Pie in the Sky, in which Richard Griffiths was a semi-retired copper who also ran a restaurant - classic stuff) though stars an Australian, a Canadian, and a Hungarian as three goofy aliens, who have sequins for eyebrows. Bonus: one of them is the unforgettable Glory Annen, from Felicity! And as is befitting a saucy British comedy of the time, it’s packed with innuendo, has a pretty fair smattering of sexism, but also maybe rejects this and heroises the sensitive, emotionally intelligent lad instead? We try to puzzle that one out. Plus, we talk about the life and times of the one and only Dr Ava Cadell, who plays alien engineer Partha! She was a refugee of the Hungarian revolution before she was even two years old, and then almost became a nun. Oh no, Nick couldn't make it out to do our GODFATHER episode! You know what that means? Replace one Nick with another! Today I sit down with my former No Homer's Podcast host and friend Niko Aldrich! On today’s episode we’ll be discussing SLAUGHTER HIGH from 1986 Directed by the trio of Mark Ezra, George Dugdale and Peter Litten, SLAUGHTER HIGH is a highly regarded slasher film with a big cult following. The movie is about a school prank gone awry. The sexy Carol (Caroline Munro) convinces the nerdy Marty (Simon Scuddamore) into the girl’s locker room for a little wet n wild fun. Well, it’s all a ruse as once Marty is naked, Carol’s gaggle of friends torture the young guy with some terrible pranks. He’s slightly electrocuted, recorded, and given a swirly to top it all off. After the school coach comes in and sees what they’ve done, the entire group is given detention… which they blame on Marty. They plan another prank on the unsuspecting Marty which leads to a bad chemical fire and Marty being trapped and burned alive. The group all recover (because why wouldn’t they?) and they’re all getting ready for their school reunion. However, once they all get to their old school they’ve noticed that the school is locked up and they were the only ones invited. SLAUGHTER HIGH is a joint American/English production and doesn’t have any discernible stars, save from horror icon Caroline Munro. As stated, the film has a massive cult following and it being unavailable in a good form for so long only fueled the fire the fans had for it. Also on this episode Michael gives a mini review of the Vinegar Syndrome release of Norman J. This week on Weird Scenes, we take on the two most important directors in 70's British cinema! Think about it: outside of Hammer, Tigon and Amicus (and perhaps short lived wunderkind Michael Reeves), how many British "new look" cult directors of the era can you name?  And yet, Pete Walker and Norman J. Warren have managed to carve themselves something of a conjoined niche unto themselves, outside the larger studios.   With their efforts gracing grindhouse theatres and syndicated programming alike throughout the 70's and 80's, their names have become synonymous with concurrent sidelines in sex and horror, often featuring some very well established names in the business! Join us as we speak to the dark and gritty (or saucy and bouncy) boundary pushing efforts of Norman J. Warren and Pete Walker!
