This week, Mike and Mike discuss Elijah Wood's very first starring role in the 1990 TV movie CHILD IN THE NIGHT! This is a semi-forgotten thriller that was rediscovered by Vinegar Syndrome a few years back, featuring JoBeth Williams, Tom Skerritt, Darren McGavin, and a lot more of Peter Pan and Captain Hook than you're probably expecting!
Berlin, vierter Stock, Deutsche Kinemathek. This film was shot in 1984. When it was retrieved, there was no sound or script. Vinegar Syndrome found this film and put it back together. A new cast has dubbed this film, and this was then released in 2021. What we are given as an audience is pure New York Ninja awesomeness! RTS even takes a field trip to view this one. John Liu (played by John Liu and dubbed by Don Wilson) is just a fella living his life. A bunch of street thugs kill his pregnant wife, and then John becomes sad. Very forlorn! Only one thing to do! Become a ninja and seek vengeance upon all criminals in New York. Good thing because The Plutonium Killer (voiced by Michael Berryman) is melting people (and himself), women are being abducted and fear is sweeping through New York. Along the way, John will befriend a kid and unify a city with their love of the ninja! RTS appreciates monogrammed throwing stars. We need to update our merch. Jeremy tosses powder bags into everyone's face – guilty or not! BAM! Powder bag! Collin picks up roller-skating based on this film. We didn't see that coming. And you won't see a ninja in white coming either! That's just a cloud.
On this episode we talk about the 90s indie film Habit. Directed by indie legend Larry Fessenden, Habit tells the story of Sam, a 30-ish alcoholic living in New York grieving after the loss of his father. Sam falls into a seductive relationship with Anna, a mysterious woman who may be a vampire. As his obsession with Anna continues, and his alcoholism, grief, and loneliness get worse, Sam's reality blurs as he descends into sickness. A pivotal movie of low-budget, indie 90s filmmaking, Habit continues our Degenerate Vampire marathon.Other topics include Fessenden's connection to the indie scene and Scorsese, degenerate vampires in Near Dark, physical media and Vinegar Syndrome, the influence of 90s indie filmmaking, the quality of the Jurassic Park sequels, out-of-print Criterion collection, new artwork, and post-2000s Spielberg movies leading up to Disclosure Day.Songs of the WeekSave You From Yourself by Just DessertsI Don't Know How But I Am by Jimmy LewisRemainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

Happy Don't Believe Anything You Read On The Internet Day, everyone!Today we continue our April Fool's Day tradition of covering a silly movie (and then realizing that it's got more substance than audiences may think at first). 20 years ago Trey Parker and Matt Stone were pissed off at how America was recklessly engaging in conflicts around the world and decided to express their frustrations with puppets and some incredible action set pieces. If only that was relevant now...Joining us this episode is Justin LaLiberty of Vinegar Syndrome, OCN Distribution, and Cinématographe. He's been in and around the film industry for decades and has been a fan of the South Park guys since the beginning so he was the perfect guest for this!In this episode we discuss:Justin's background in filmHis first time seeing the South Park movie at summer camp (at the drive in with American Pie as the double bill)How Team America is one of the last big studio action spectacles of its eraThe difference between comedy that's offensive and juvenile vs. meanArt as activismPuppet sex and pukeMeeting David Byrne and MORE!Substantive Cinema Episode ListShoutouts:Badge 373 (Letterboxd)Office Killer (Letterboxd) Follow Justin:InstagramLetterboxdVinegar SyndromeNew ReleasesPhysical Media Corner:The BirthdayPeking Opera BluesFollow Us:InstagramThreadsPhilip's LetterboxdBlueSkyShare Your Questions/Suggestions/Feedback With Us:Email: thesubstancepod@gmail.comDM on InstagramSupport Us: Support the show with an individual donation on CashApp to $TheSubstancePod or become a monthly Patreon supporter at patreon.com/TheSubstancePod

On this episode we reflect on the reality that we must die, and in order to live we also must love. And it's a discussion on (ostensibly) a zombie movie that a 20+ year later legacy sequel! When the teaser trailer for 28 Years Later dropped, it seemed clear that the film wouldn't be a safe, mindless retread of previous material looking to cash in on fan nostalgia. It was visually striking, poetic, foreboding, and promised a dark, brutal world that not only has experienced a viral outbreak, but has evolved to, as much as people collectively can, live with it. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland were cooking up something special and we couldn't wait! The result was not only a commercial success but a beautifully touching coming of age story that hits on several substantive themes.Joining us for this episode is film journalist Brandon Streussnig. Brandon has written for outlets like Vulture, The Ringer, GQ, Inverse, Men's & Women's Health, Letterboxd Journal, The AV Club, The Playlist, Polygon, Fangoria, Paste, The Film Stage, In Review Online, AwardsWatch, and others. Champagne and Bullets (1993) was chosen by JAC, who has a real talent for uncovering the most outrageous, bewildering, and unintentionally hilarious films ever committed to VHS. Written, directed, produced, and starring John De Hart, the movie is one of the most unique vanity projects of the early '90s - a full-throttle explosion of action, romance, country music, and courtroom drama held together by sheer force of ego. De Hart, a California trial lawyer with big Hollywood ambitions, financed the film himself and assembled a cast that included Wings Hauser and William Smith, two cult icons of low-budget action cinema. Shooting took place around Los Angeles on a shoestring budget, with much of the film's tone shaped by De Hart's insistence on performing his own music, writing his own poetry, and choreographing his own dance numbers. The production quickly became infamous behind the scenes for its chaotic mix of genres, improvised sequences, and the cast's varying levels of investment. Wings Hauser, in particular, was reportedly encouraged to “just go for it,” resulting in some of the film's most legendary moments — including his drunken, half-ad-libbed musical performance that has since become a cult highlight. The movie went through several edits and re-releases, most notably the 2013 version titled Road to Revenge, before the original cut was restored and championed by boutique labels and cult film festivals. Today, Champagne and Bullets stands as a gleefully bizarre testament to what happens when one man attempts to make the ultimate action movie entirely on his own terms - a glorious disaster that's now celebrated as a cult gem for all the wrong (and therefore absolutely right) reasons. If you enjoy the show, we have a Patreon, so become a supporter here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot SummaryGet ready for justice… John De Hart style. When corruption runs wild and the system breaks down, one man steps forward - armed with a badge, a guitar, and absolutely no self-awareness. In a world of betrayal, bullets, and baffling dance numbers, he'll fight for truth, love, and the right to perform his own country ballads… no matter how long it takes.Champagne and Bullets - where the action is loud, the romance is awkward, and the hero is whoever John De Hart says he is.Fun FactsChampagne and Bullets was originally released in 1993, but due to rights issues and re-editing by John De Hart, it was later reissued under two different titles: Road to Revenge and GetEven. The film gained cult status largely thanks to Internet rediscovery in the 2000s.Actor Wings Hauser improvised much of his performance, including the infamous barroom musical number, which has since become a viral cult-movie highlight.John De Hart wrote and performed all the original songs in the movie, including “Shimmy Slide,” which has achieved meme-level notoriety online. The “Shimmy Slide” dance sequence was filmed in a real Sherman Oaks bar, using actual patrons as background extras.Cult actor William Smith shot his scenes in just a few days due to scheduling constraints.John De Hart's background as a trial lawyer inspired several scenes meant to showcase his courtroom skills, which fans now consider unintentionally comedic.Boutique label Vinegar Syndrome restored and re-released the film in 2020, using a new 2K scan that finally preserved De Hart's original wild vision.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

THE SWIMMER (1968) We dive deep in to The Swimmer and discuss and analyze, maybe just a little bit the glorious film directed by Frank Perry, based on a screenplay by Eleanor Perry, from the 12 page short story by John Cheever. "Well-off ad man Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) is visiting a friend when he notices the abundance of backyard pools that populate their upscale suburb. Ned suddenly decides that he'd like to travel the eight miles back to his own home by simply swimming across every pool in town."If you're reading this I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support.
