I'm super excited to introduce my podcast, Garry’s Shortlist! As the CEO of OneStart, I hire talent for the construction industry. I haven’t always been in recruitment. Prior to One Start, I was the Executive Head of Safety at a construction company.A lot of people have asked me, why’d I take the leap? The reason really came down to this - It made sense.I love listening and chatting to people, and working in recruitment gives me the opportunity to do that every single day. The podcast was born because I really wanted to share the conversations I was having with the incredible people I met. I hoped their stories would inspire others in the way they have inspired me. If you’re a Construction Professional and you’ve got a story to share, I’d love to hear from you!Cheers,Gaz

We all know that safety is a key operational part of any business. But would you say it also plays a key role in your company culture? So often, the blame falls upon subcontractors for workplace incidents. Rarely do organisations take a step back and ask, 'how did we fail?'.On my podcast, Garry's Shortlist, I am joined by Tamara Jonson - Group Head of Safety at Australia's largest privately-owned construction firm, Richard Crookes Construction. The construction firm is embarking on a transformative shift surrounding perceptions of safety and high potential incidents in the workplace.Tamara discusses how many organisations focus and report on injuries or incidents that result in direct harm. However, Richard Crookes is taking the effort to investigate workplace incidents and take them as seriously as if someone had been left permanently disabled or killed. Join us as we discuss the leading construction firms' proactive safety strategies and top tips for someone looking for a career in safety. Tamara reminded me of a great quote 'hire the attitude, train the skills.' Spot on!

Then, imagine asking them to tell you one word that described the picture. You're probably going to receive a whole bunch of different answers. Blue, serene, pirates, deep, mermaids, calm...So, what's the right word? There's got to be ONE right word, doesn't there? In today's podcast with Sam Thiara, Chief Motivating Officer of Ignite the Dream, Coaching and Consulting, he used this incredible analogy to explain the concept of perspectives. Everyone has their own truth. Everyone is going to give you a different answer to how they would describe the photo - and that's okay! The key as a manager and leader is to listen to these different views, and use them to inform your decision making. If you try and impose your reality on other people without regard for their perspectives, you're never going to get the best out of your team.I had such a great time speaking with Sam, and I just know that anyone who tunes into this episode will come away feeling inspired. Sam just has that kind of energy!

Because when mistakes happen, they can have really serious consequences.Patrizia's goal is to shift the mindset around approaching safety on sites. She wants to encourage construction workers to feel empowered about speaking out about unsafe work environments, and for Project Managers to engage in conversation with their workers, rather than talking to them about safety without dialogue.Since the tragic loss of her son Christopher in 2019 in a scaffolding accident,  Patrizia founded the Touched by Christopher Foundation and her company Let's Talk About Safety Australia. Many years ago I flew to Tamworth for leadership training that would quite frankly impact the way I thought about leadership for the rest of my career.I bet you're wondering, what was so special about it?Well, this training wasn't your typical classroom leadership course. It was led by the founder of Leadership Horsepower, Stuart Harrison. Stu helps people develop emotional intelligence and leadership skills through working with horses. Wild, right!Horses are excellent at reading the signals and emotions you're giving off, and their reactions are authentic and immediate. If you learn to pay attention to their responses and then modify your behaviour accordingly, you'll be far better equipped to interact with your team, learning how to understand their emotions and then managing them from where they're at.If you're interested in learning what it means to lead well, and develop relationships with your team that will see them thrive and grow, I definitely recommend tuning into this episode!

Trust is the biggest single predictor of an effective safety culture and companies in general. It's all about overcoming mistrust and helping companies create the space where their people feel free to speak up and report incidents or admit mistakes, because we are fallible right?.In today's episode, I'm going in conversation with Clive Lloyd, Director and Principal Consultant at GYST Consulting. Clive has a background in Clinical Psychology and is also a published author. If you haven't read ‘Next Generation Safety Leadership: from Compliance to Care' yet, I highly recommend you do.With his global Care Factor program, Clive helps companies tweak their internal dialogue, making room for a more mature safety culture where people look out for one another. The low-hanging fruit of better safety management is as simple as 'listening' to your workers. Start getting out there in the field and ask relevant questions. Stop doing safety TO your workers and start doing safety WITH them.Watch what happens when you involve your front line workers and give them the opportunity to contribute to the safety in your company and on the job. A few years ago, my good friend Martin Patience (the current Joint General Manager of Aged Care and Retirement Living at Richard Crookes Constructions), said to me that even if every builder in Australia stopped what they were building right now to start building aged care facilities, we still wouldn't have enough beds for the people who need them. That really stuck with me.I wanted to sit down with Martin for an episode of Garry's Shortlist to talk about the future of aged care - what's being done to cater for our ever-growing ageing population and are we any closer to fixing this crisis?Coincidentally, just after Martin and I recorded the podcast, the Federal government announced they would be delivering 17.8 billion dollars to the aged care sector for a 'once in a generation' reform of the industry. This funding promise affirms exactly what Martin spoke about - we need a change and we need it now.Tune in for the full episode here on Spotify https://sptfy.com/GarrysShortlist (now also available on Apple podcasts) and join in on the conversation with us!

The second episode of Garry's Shortlist is here My guest today is James Kell, former Managing Director of Kell & Rigby Builders. I had a fantastic experience at Kell & Rigby where I worked alongside James as a Group Safety Environmental Manager for 4 years. One of the most memorable projects we've worked on together was building the first Apple store in Australia. From the great culture on site to the innovative approach to risk and reward management, the Apple project turned out to be one of the best opportunities for the whole team at Kell & Rigby.Safety in the construction industry has always had a very punitive approach, putting a constant negative pressure on company culture. If you do something wrong, you get punished with either a notice or a financial warning. That's why during the Apple project, we trialled a new approach based on positive psychology to reward positive behaviours rather than to focus on the negative.I hope you enjoy the second episode of Garry's Shortlist :)Cheers,Gaz
