Talking about death and grief is a bummer. You may feel like skipping this topic altogether. But guess what? We've all been grieving this year, because we've all lost something that was important to us during the pandemic. Maybe you missed visiting family, date nights, or going to school. Perhaps you lost a job, or a sense of financial stability. The term “little losses” has recently made a debut to describe all the things we've lost or had to give up since the COVID-19 pandemic started. But the thing is, when we don't take the time to acknowledge and feel the grief that comes with these losses, we can't accept them and move forward. We get stuck in grief, in the same way that some people get stuck grieving when someone they love dies. Lower Columbia Hospice social worker Jeanette Johnson counsels with people at the end of their lives and their families. Helping people work through grief is a big part of her job. In this episode, "Hands on Health" host Felicia Struve and Jeanette explore the process of grief, how to recognize it in yourself and others, what we can do to help, and the silver-lining of grief. # # # "Hands on Health" is the podcast all about living your healthiest life on the coast. She doesn't sugar coat her situation, but she also doesn't wallow in it. Cancer has worked in Di's life the way that fire works on clay. She is stronger and more beautiful because of her experiences. Meet oncology social worker Mari Montesano, LCSW. She works with cancer patients and their families at the CMH-OHSU Knight Cancer Collaborative. Mari was named CMH's caregiver winner of the 2019 Spirit of Caring Award. The co-worker who nominated Mari for this award wrote, "In my years of working with her, she has never said ‘no' when I come to her for assistance for a patient, no matter what else she has going on. I know sometimes she is pulled from the Cancer Center to cover the ER, pediatrics or the hospital, but I never hear her complain, and she never lets anything fall through. I don't think I have ever worked with someone of Mari's caliber in social work in terms of personal integrity, skill and knowledge base. She is a calming presence in often turbulent waters for patients and sometimes turmoil in the clinic. Our [cancer] center would not be what it is without her." # # # "Hands on Health" is the podcast all about living your healthiest life on the coast.
