Generative AI Crucial for Coding Complex Conditions

Ben Beadle-Ryby, Senior Vice President and Co-founder at AKASA, says that a typical patient record contains 50,000 words spread across 59 clinical documents. Trying to code a single patient's conditions is comparable to reading The Great Gatsby and extracting key facts.Historically, he says, organizations "have thrown armies of people at the problem." Not only is that unfeasible; these people are not as accurate they need to be. Due to this and other reasons, claim denials have increased from 9.8% in 2019 to 12.7% now. Other revenue cycle measures have also gone in the wrong direction: for instance, cost to collect has gone from 2.7% in 2019 to 3.7% today. This video at the AHIMA Annual Conference interviews Beadle-Ryby along with two clients: Nick Judd, Senior Director, Revenue Cycle and Health Information Management at Cleveland Clinic, and Jennifer Nicholson, Assistant Vice President, Revenue Cycle and Health Information Management at Duke University Health System. They talk about leveraging generative AI solutions for coding and the benefits of leveraging this technology.Learn more about Cleveland Clinic: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/Learn more about Duke University Health System: https://www.dukehealth.org/Learn more about Akasa: https://akasa.com/Healthcare IT Community: https://www.healthcareittoday.com/

Peter Maurer, Assistant Professor of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, speaks with Pitt's HexAI podcast host, JordanGass-Pooré, about the future impact of quantum sensing on biomedical research and diagnostics.Peter's research lab leverages the extreme environmental sensitivity of quantum systems to develop powerful sensors suitable for cutting-edge biological research that are optically addressable and can operate under ambient conditions. He outlines both near-term and future applications of powerful quantum sensors in pathology and laboratory medicine. He provides a key example of how these sensors could enable a new type of nanoscale NMR spectroscopy, capable of measuring magnetic fields from biomolecules to non-invasively probe their chemical information and signaling pathways. In the near future, he points to diagnostic tools, currently being developed by companies, that use the unique optical signatures of quantum sensors for highly sensitive, background-free protein detection in small volumes. For the long term, he envisions the technology as a "field opener" for studying protein aggregation in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.Peter outlines how AI can be applied to analyze complex data from sensors that respond to multiple environmental factors and highlights the challenge of bringing together experts from quantum technology, biophysics, and medicine who can "talk each other's language.” He also touches on how the use of synthetic data in quantum sensing is a "completely under-appreciated" area with the potential to analyze complex environmental properties that would otherwise be missed by looking at single types of measurements. To advance the field from academic proofs-of-concept to clinical tools, he stresses the need for collaboration with academic and industry partners who can help engineer robust, "turnkey" systems that can be widely tested and used. The University of Pittsburgh Health and Explainable AI podcast is a collaborative initiative between the Health and Explainable AI (HexAI) Research Laboratory in the Department of Health Information Management at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and the Computational Pathology and AI Center of Excellence (CPACE), at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.Hosted by Jordan Gass-Pooré, a health and science reporter, this podcast series explores the transformative integration of responsible and explainable artificial intelligence into health informatics, clinical decision-making, and computational medicine. From reshaping diagnostic accuracy to enhancing patient care pathways, we'll highlight how AI is creating new bridges between researchers, clinicians, and healthcare innovators. Led by Ahmad P. Tafti, Hooman Rashidi and Liron Pantanowitz, the HexAI podcast is committed to democratizing knowledge around ethical, explainable, and clinically relevant AI. Through insightful conversations with domain experts, AI practitioners and students will spotlight the latest breakthroughs, discuss real-world applications, and unpack the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in responsible AI in healthcare. This arrest comes in the wake of related incidents at an AT&T store in Duluth and a thwarted attempt in Hall County, Georgia, highlighting a broader pattern of criminal activity spanning metro Atlanta, Athens, South Georgia, and Crossville, Tennessee. Currently held in Hall County Jail facing numerous charges, Vasile's arrest marks a significant step forward in the investigation, while his accomplice, Maria Antonescu (Un-toh-ness-koo), remains at large. The pair are alleged to have utilized specialized equipment to extract cellphones from store displays, indicating a calculated approach to targeting telecommunications retailers. Officials call on the public to aid in this effort by providing any relevant information to Oakwood Police, reinforcing the commitment to safeguarding against the exploitation of technological vulnerabilities. Khalid Al-Maskari is the CEO of Health Information Management Systems (HiMS) and a thought leader in healthcare informatics. Behavioral healthcare is an area that Khalid has identified as ripe for innovation and where integration of systems needs to be better focused on transparency and the coordination of the care of patients. Khalid says, "So in behavioral healthcare, a lot of the communication is between care coordinators and case managers. And most of it traditionally has been on the side of the healthcare providers having a lot of information, and then patients communicate with them. But the communication typically is long-term communication. It's not instantaneous. A lot of times, the patients have to request that information rather than them having access to it directly. So it's a longer process, unlike going to a PCP for a specific issue, behavioral health typically is a long-term process." "One of the things that COVID made clear is that behavioral health patients are ready to be more active and participate in their healthcare. The other part that has accelerated also is the use of technology and machine learning. So there's a lot of data. There's very little, in my opinion, kind of looking at that data and translating it into something that would improve both the patient and the provider side." @HMSFirst #EHR #IntegratedHealthcare #BehavioralHealthcare #PatientEngagement #HealthTech #BehavioralHealth #COVID19 HMSFirst.com Download the transcript here

LFCC Announces First Graduates in Competency-Based Education Programs Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) is pleased to announce that four students completed their certificates attained through the new competency-based education (CBE) program at the college, Knowledge to Work (K2W).  The four graduates received certificates in Office Systems Assistant and Information Processing Technician.  These student were able to leverage knowledge from employment and prior coursework to attain these credentials in less time than a traditional program. According to LFCC Professor Virginia Hartman, CBE is an excellent way to help those with work experience in an office environment complete a credential.  “We are fortunate to have K2W in place at LFCC,” said Hartman. “There are so many people who could benefit from this program and use their credentials for pay raises and promotions.” Seven programs are offered this fall, including Associate of Applied Science degrees in Health Information Management and in Information Systems Technology; the Certificate in Office Systems Assistant; and Career Studies Certificates in Hospital Facility Coding, Information Processing Technician, Cyber Security, and Networking Specialist.
