Welcome back to the Autism Family Resource Podcast! Are you a parent of a child with autism struggling to find the right support and therapy for your child? You are not alone. Many parents find it challenging to navigate the world of autism care, especially with the numerous therapies and approaches available. But what if there was a different approach to autism care that focused on the whole family and was more collaborative and supportive? What if there was a therapy that was more play-based and encouraged intrinsic motivation? We have good news! There is. In this episode, we have another awesome guest on our show, Will Martin, from Soar Autism Center. Soar Autism Center is doing amazing work, taking a fresh approach to autism care that is centered on whole family support, early intervention, and collaborative care. Guest: Will Martin MEd, BCBA is a board-certified behavior analyst and Head of Care Model Design implementation at Soar Autism Center. Soar provides Early Start Denver Model-based therapy to children with autism in the Phoenix and Denver metro areas. Website: https://soarautismcenter.com/ Social Media: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube Key Takeaways: The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is a play-based intervention that encourages intrinsic motivation. The goal of ESDM therapy is to find something the child likes and incorporate therapy into that activity. DTT stands for Discrete Trial Training and is one of the original forms of ABA. It involves repeated practice of skills in an isolated or controlled context. When looking for an ABA provider for your child, it is important to ask questions about the type of therapy and the approach used. Red flags that may indicate your child would benefit from an autism assessment include: communication struggles, challenging behaviors, and difficulties engaging with your child in play. Any interventions or therapies should match the child's values and the family's values. Soar Autism Center typically serves children between two and five years old. Sometimes, they will serve children a little older than that if they are getting ready to transition to school. Soar Autism Center takes all major insurance, including Medicaid and most commercial insurance plans. Once an assessment is complete, the BCBA, speech-language pathologist, and occupational therapist will get together and make clinical recommendations. The conversation explores the concept of leadership and its application in dental practices. It discusses the misconception that leadership is solely the responsibility of the owner or manager, emphasizing that leadership is a collective effort. Takeaways Leadership is a collective effort and not limited to the owner or manager. Setting clear expectations and providing tools are essential aspects of leadership. The term 'leader' is often overused and misused, and individuals need to earn their leadership roles. Effective communication, transparency, and trust are crucial for building a successful team. Dentists face challenges in developing leadership skills, but the younger generation shows a strong desire to improve. Work-life balance is important to millennials and younger professionals, who prioritize a different style of work and life. Culture in the workplace is subjective and can vary from one office to another, but it is important to define and align with the values and goals of the business. Setting clear expectations and holding team members accountable is crucial for maintaining a positive work environment. The process of hiring and firing should be done with dignity and open communication, focusing on the needs and goals of both the employer and the employee. Creating a strong culture starts with defining the vision and values of the business and aligning behaviors and goals with those values. The firing process can be made easier by using tools such as the Arch template and radical candor to have difficult conversations and set clear expectations. Dr. Janeé Steele is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), counselor educator, and has earned the status of Diplomate and Certified CBT Therapist through the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies. Dr. Steele is the owner of Kalamazoo Cognitive & Behavioral Therapy, PLLC where she provides therapy, supervision, and training in CBT. She is also a member of the core faculty at Walden University School of Counseling where she has served as a counselor educator for the past 10 years. Her scholarly activity includes service as an associate editor of the Journal of Multicultural Counseling & Development and authorship of works focused on the areas of CBT, cultural diversity, social justice advocacy, and counselor training. She has published conceptual and research-based articles in peer-reviewed journals including the International Journal for the Advancement of Counseling, Counselor Education and Supervision, and the Handbook of Counselor Education. During her senior year in high school, Dr.Janeé Steele did not really have post-graduation plans until her aunt called her and asked, “where are you going to college?" Janeé responded, “I'm not” to which her aunt replied, “yes, you are.” Dr. Steele shared “I'm from a generation where you kind of just do what your elders say. So that was pretty much the end of the conversation. Like literally, she said ‘yes, you are. Ok, talk to you later.' And we hung up.” She remembers having to quickly figure out where she was going to college. Her aunt was starting law school so she could go where her aunt went to college or where her aunt was attending law school. So, she left Arizona and went to Southern Illinois University where she earned her BA in Psychology. This started her journey in psychology and counseling. Dr. Steele shared this, and many other, stories related to her academic and professional journey highlighting where she received her degrees, why she chose the schools and programs, and the people who influenced her career. One of the people she mentions in this podcast is a professor named Kevin Cokley. Dr. Steele states, “he was doing a lot of really interesting research related to the psychology of the African American experience. And that was so impactful for me as an African American just looking at ways in which this field can be used to enhance the mental health and the quality of life of people who look like me.” Dr. Steele stayed at SIU to earn her MSEd then attended Western Michigan University for her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision. Throughout this podcast, Dr. Steele shares practical advice for those interested in the field of psychology and counseling and offers suggestions to those interested in opening their own private practice. For example, she states, “if we're thinking about advice for individuals who are thinking about entering this field, I would really encourage them to anticipate the need to continue your education and to seek meaningful, as many meaningful certifications as they can obtain.” She believes that her CBT certification and her PhD have helped draw in more clients. She states, “having a PhD affords me a little bit more credibility as these both provide more credibility. And so, I think that as individuals are thinking about ways to make themselves appealing to the broadest number of individuals, they might want to think about things that lend credibility and provide evidence that they have adequate training to be able to deal with the mental health issues that people are bringing into therapy.” Dr. Steele discusses the impetus for her, and Dr. Char Newton's, new book Black Lives Are Beautiful: 50 Tools to Heal from Trauma and Promote Positive Racial Identity. There are millions of workbooks and other resources focused on anxiety, depression, or self-esteem, however, there are not as many resources “that people could use to facilitate healing outside of the therapeutic dyad” for the issue of “stigma attached to ther...

CEO and TransParents co-founder Kirsten Timmer is a licensed psychologist and psychotherapist; Jens Heidegger, lead course facilitator, trainer, and supervisor at TransParents, is a licensed doctor. Focusing on the importance of the parent-child relationship, TransParents is a platform for parents and professionals who are committed to creating meaningful relationships with children while respecting and preserving life processes. Kirsten and Jens' work lies in strengthening that connection by utilizing a trauma-informed approach. In their training, they invite curiosity by employing tools like puppets and roleplay for parents to see how they can relate to their children in a more supportive, playful way. A heartfelt openness can strengthen parent-child connections in this act of playful discovery. In reconnecting to her own childhood and raising a son, Kirsten came to understand the importance of how attachment impacts how we relate to ourselves and others. She describes becoming a parent for the first time as “an invitation to life, to grow.” Kirsten and Jens support parents in a shift from shaming themselves to developing deep curiosity for themselves and their children. Jens says, “The cause of it is that you develop more freedom, more possibilities, more agency, that are then helpful for the kids.” About Kirsten Timmer and Jens Heidegger: Kirsten Timmer is one of the founders and CEO of TransParents. She is a psychologist, psychotherapist, and parenting advisor. Kirsten was trained in Client-Centered Therapy by Carl Rogers and in NARM® by Dr. Lawrence Heller and has her own practice. She is also a senior student of Thomas Hübl, a contemporary spiritual teacher and mystic. Today, I'm sitting down with comedian Jazmyn W (@jazmynjw on IG), and we hit it off! She is a female black comedian, who went from working a nine to five to just recently getting off a comedy tour with Martin Lawrence at the end of 2021. Pre-pandemic she was doing standup but when the world shut down she pivoted to Tiktok for her comedy. In this episode, we are talking about the black experience while at work, one of my favorite series of hers which is 'Karen's Behavioral Therapy', and touch on her comedic journey and what it's meant to put herself out there. Jazmyn creates fun, light-hearted Tiktok videos that everyone can relate to. And while it's fun, it also brings awareness and learning to everyone who watches. So without further ado, Let's get into it! In this episode: What Jazmyn learned in her 20's She started doing comedy at night, after working a 9-5 job. Moving to LA, Jazmyn worked as an HR VP at a large entertainment company but gave it up to become a full time comedian At the start of the pandemic, she started doing more Tiktok videos a day Adapting to Tiktok on its early stage would make it easier to grow, that attracted Jazmin to the platform ‘Stagnation is scarier than change' Jazmyn talks about therapy a lot, and has created different funny characters to portray how someone would react to the black community Black hair is generally a touchy subject but being able to wear your hair whatever and wherever you want is a freeing experience How the characters she creates mirrors her own experiences and the people around her From a black woman's point of view, Jazmyn creates content that turns her bad experiences into funny and therapeutic portrayals The Black Community are often victims of microaggression, and standing up for yourself takes learning and practice How opening up for Martin Lawrence happened Going forward, Jazmyn aims to hype herself up and keeps reminding herself that she can do it For the 20's community: Have some confidence + believe in yourself To learn more and connect with Jazmyn, head over to: On Tiktok On Youtube On Instagram On her Website Watch out for Jazmyn Gives Bad Advice Podcast dropping in March 2022! Michele's oldest daughter's first word was “calculator”. Because she was highly verbal and seemed to need less intervention, Michele struggle to get a diagnosis for her. Her second son's presented quite differently, but Michele suspected that he too had autism. Knowing that early intervention was key, Michele was so disappointed to realize that it took until they were pre-teens to get help. She just wanted to understand why her children behaved the way that they do, and this sent her on a journey to get a Master's in Behavioral Therapy.Michele speaks directly to parents in her podcast Navigating the Spectrum. As a mom and an ABA therapist, she knows that an autism diagnosis can have an emotional pull on parents. For her though, the diagnosis was a relief since it means that she could get to work helping her children. In this episode, we have a great conversation about some of the negative perceptions about ABA therapy, and how she approaches those challenges in her practice. She points out that you can do speech all day when you're in the office, but that it only starts to click when the child also does speech at home with their family. One of the major reasons that she approaches therapy as a whole family event is that she knows exactly what it's like as an autism mom herself. She practices inside Colorado, and outside the state, she provides teletherapy services. We are putting together a top-notch teacher of ABA therapists and SLPs to provide teletherapy beyond Ohio. I am so excited for this new venture that will be able to help more children and parents around the world. Check out my website for more information. What's Inside:For girls and highly verbal children, getting an autism diagnosis can be especially difficult since they don't present like the checklists that most doctors are working from.Because she knows that there may be a team outside the school system, Michele works hard to include parents in the IEP goals so that everyone can be on the same page.As a parent and an ABA therapist, Michele would like Speech-Language Pathologists to know that she doesn't always understand their lingo.
