How many women have decided not to have more children after a traumatic birth? The UK's first inquiry into traumatic childbirth has found that too often poor care is normalised, with devastating effects on women's mental and physical health. Nuala McGovern talks to one Woman's Hour listener who decided she couldn't face having another child after a traumatic birth, and to the author of the report, Dr Kim Thomas, about its recommendations. Journalist Decca Aitkenhead regularly sleepwalks. She talks to Nuala about her night-time escapades which include finding herself locked out in the middle of the night, eating food she'd find disgusting when awake and incredible strength that has seen her smash furniture to pieces. She's joined by neurologist and sleep expert Prof Guy Leschziner who explains what's going on in our brains when we sleepwalk, and how women are affected. New analysis from the TUC, the Trades Union Congress, says that more than 1.5 million women have dropped out of the workforce because of long-term sickness. The figure marks a 48% increase compared with five years ago. Nicola Smith, Head of Economics at the TUC, tells Nuala McGovern what may be stopping women from returning to work. Award-winning playwright and actor Lolita Chakrabarti discusses her new Radio 3 play, Calmer. All about motherhood and chaos, it follows three generations of ultra-successful women in one family - but their lives are not as ‘good' as they appear on paper.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Olivia Skinner

More than half of mothers have experienced physical or psychological birth trauma leading them less likely to have more children because of their experience of maternity care. That's according to a study by Mumsnet instigated by Conservative MP Theo Clarke. She has founded an all-party parliamentary group on birth trauma to advocate for change following her own harrowing experience during childbirth, where she faced a third-degree tear and emergency surgery. In this episode I sit down with a courageous couple, Angelisa and Veneline Nikolov, who openly share their emotional journey through birth trauma. We also engage in a compelling discussion with Kim Thomas from the Birth Trauma Association,  and I share my own experiences of birth trauma including a complication called shoulder dystocia which left me and my newborn with serious injuries. We delve into the profound impact of childbirth trauma on women's mental health, exploring the flashbacks, physical and mental injuries, guilt, and isolation that can follow. Angelisa and Veneline's candid stories emphasize the critical need for empathy and support for those who have experienced birth trauma. We talk about the attitude of health care workers and our feeling of failure after our traumatic births -and what can be done to help people who suffer from birth trauma and how the system can be improved.Tune in as we explore these crucial issues and call for a more compassionate approach to childbirth and improved maternity care for all women.#BirthTrauma#MaternityCare#EmpathyInHealthcare#MentalHealth#SupportForMothers#ChildbirthJourney#AdvocacyForChange#BirthTraumaAwareness#CompassionateCare#MaternalMentalHealth#ParentingJourney#MotherhoodMatters#NewParents#FamilySupport#WomenEmpowerment#HealthcareAdvocacy#BirthStories#EmpoweringMothers#MaternalSupport#MaternityRights#MaternalWellbeing#HealthcareReform#MaternityExperience#SharingStories#AwarenessMattersSupport the showhttps://www.angelawalkerreports.com/

In 2021, Black women were mayors of eight of the 100 U.S. cities with the largest populations. It was a record number. In a November 2021 New York Times article about the rise of Black women mayors, scholar and voting rights expert David Bositis said, "This is the age of Black women in politics. This has been culminating for a long time."rnrnThis rise in Black women in elected positions can be attributed to community activism, changing demographics, targeted recruitment efforts, and increased support from major organizations. "Before, it used to be that Black women didn't run. They were the organizers and the campaign volunteers, but the men were the ones who were running for office," Sharon Wright Austin, a professor at the University of Florida, said in the same article. "But now you're seeing Black women not only organizing campaigns and working in communities but having the confidence that they can run for office themselves."rnrnIn Northeast Ohio, Black women lead three of our towns-Maple Heights, Richmond Heights, and Newburgh Heights-representing a combined total of more than 33,000 residents. Two of the mayors are the first Black women to lead their respective cities.rnrnJoin the City Club as we mark International Women's Day for a conversation led by Sheila Wright with Mayors Annette Blackwell, Kim Thomas, and Gigi Traore about the role Black women leaders play in our changing political landscape.

Could the murder of Charlotte activist, Kim Thomas, finally be solved? From the Charlotte Observer: A prominent Charlotte defense attorney claims police have uncovered evidence that could finally solve one of the city's most notorious criminal mysteries: Who committed the gruesome 1990 murder of Kim Thomas? Now, David Rudolf wants a judge to order the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to release what it knows about the case. Thomas, a 32-year-old Charlotte activist, doctor's wife and mother, was found inside her Cotswold home on July 27, 1990, handcuffed, her throat repeatedly slashed, her 10-month-old son in his crib nearby. Her death — and the prolonged failure of CMPD to find her killer — has reverberated through the city for decades. Thirty-two years after Thomas' killing, a highly unusual Mecklenburg County court filing on Wednesday offers new hope of closure. In it, Rudolf reveals that he was recently told by an unnamed CMPD homicide detective that investigators have matched DNA found at the Thomas murder scene with Marion “Pool” Gales, a 60-year-old career criminal long linked to the stabbing, who is now serving a prison sentence for the killing of another woman. In an effort to protect any ongoing police investigations connected to the Thomas case, Rudolf asked CMPD last month to reveal the new information only to Thomas' family and her former husband, Ed Friedland. Four years after the killing, Friedland was charged with his wife's murder. The charges were later dropped and never refiled.      Get exclusive content here!: https://thepetekalinershow.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
