Welcome to Garbagetown. Nobody is fine. Jackie Vleck & Sarah Jean Kruchowski talk each other through the creative despair and minor victories of the “working stiff” version of Hollywood. Take a listen to the pilot episode. MP3 Notes from Producer Jennie: So, as you may have guessed, this is NOT a Tell It Anyway. It’s a brand-new podcast called “Hooray for Garbagetown”, and it sprung to life in the (sometimes sweltering) creative heat generated in the little office above the butcher shop where your favorite storytelling podcast is produced. You may remember Jackie Vleck from TIA Ep. 9 “What Might Have Been”. If you don’t, go check out that episode, b/c it is terrific. Matt and I have known Jackie since she was part of the epic “Bad Teacher” experience, but we were floored with how great she was telling stories on our show. So we got to talking about a particular phrase that Jackie loves to use: “garbage.” As in, “I’m a garbage.” Or, “this town makes you feel like garbage.”  And we thought, well, if that isn’t a podcast…. So Jackie and her Ultraloom creative partner Sarah Jean Kruchowsi got together and brought Hooray for Garbagetown to life. They learned the entire “Tom Merritt podcast publishing process”, booked tremendous guests, and showed up every week to the little office above the butcher shop to tape new episodes. And it was hot. (Not just the podcast. We had to turn the air off to record, and it was damned hot). (Note to self: Do not incubate podcasts in August.) Anyway, I decided to cross post their introductory episode in the Tell It Anyway feed, so you can all get a taste of the garbage (err, magic) but their first full episode is up right now at Hooray for Garbagetown – it’s a tremendous interview with Jim McDermott, a screen and magazine writer, who is also a Catholic priest in a religious order known as the Jesuits. You should head on over there and take a listen. And then check out their awesome site. You can tell a lot of hard work went into it, which is great, because in Hollywood, hard work is ALWAYS rewarded. *sob* And yes, the iTunes account is “under review” as we speak. But you are ALL tech savvy podcast fiends, so I know you can just go ahead and manually add the show to your podcatchers with this link: http://www.hoorayforgarbagetown.com/feed?format=rss Hugs all around, Jennie

I loved all three stories on this one, but technically this episode was technically tough!  Skype shows often have something or another wrong with them, usually related to “ducking” or the guest audio. I use Skype Call Recorder to tape those shows. If you, um, “ear-ball”  levels ahead of time, the guest audio usually sounds fine enough. This time though I thought I would be smart and tape my microphone audio on a separate app, so that I could take advantage of my great Heil PR-40.  Except I didn’t check the levels of my mic in Audio Hijack where I was recording. And so, as you can probably tell, my mic is horribly overmodulated. I would have used my record from Call Recorder but it had some fatal reoccurring crackle. So, two lessons here: 1) Get an engineer. Stat.  2) So far, not a single person has written to complain about it. Which means, in the end, the story is the only thing that matters. : ) Thanks to our brand new patrons for their support! MP3 Show Notes: Form: The 3fer: Three people, three stories, one theme and let’s see if they connect. Theme: That Sinking Feeling The music: Our opening and closing music is a selection from “Unlocked Door” used by permission of Alex Cook. Thank you Alex! If you want to hear the complete songs, check out Alex Cook’s bandcamp page and his website Stonebalancer The Free Music Archive is filled with (they say) podsafe music, which is where three of the amazing songs in this week’s episode came from. I’m always humbled by just how much beautiful music is floating out there on the internet, just waiting for new ears to call home… I highly recommend you check out Toussaint Morrison’s “Baby, I’m Bad Weather” in full. It’s a tremendous song, and I can’t wait to see this artist from Minneapolis by way of New Orleans break big. I feel the same way about this artist, Jason Karaban, whose song “You’re Already Home” feels like it should already be on the radio in heavy rotation. Listen now so you can say you knew him when! And thanks to the Split Squad for their rockin’ jam  “I’ve Got A Feeling” which was the perfect song to kick of this episode about the feelings that sink. Storytellers: Jennie Josephson, Nick Holly & Jessica Kozak Part One: Jennie Josephson “Just For The Taste Of It…” Part Two:  Nick Holly, “Roger & Me” Part Three:  Jessica Kozak “Models Wanted For Respectable Project”

What Might Have Been

What if Jennie had embraced her inner Really Rosie, if Jackie had embraced The Cheddar and if Fred had lived in Camelot just a little while longer. MP3 Show Notes: Form: The 3fer: Three people, three stories, one theme and let’s see if they connect. Theme: What Might Have Been The music: Our opening and closing music is a selection from “Unlocked Door” used by permission of Alex Cook. Thank you Alex! If you want to hear the complete songs, check out Alex Cook’s bandcamp page and his website Stonebalancer “Do It All Over Again” by Muck and the Mires as featured on The Free Music Archive. Great garage band rock as originally featured on “Live at WFMU on Three Chord Monte on 7/16/10“. WFMU was super important in my heavy metal awakening back when I went to high school in New Jersey. How cool that we get to use it in a storytelling podcast! “Mr Cheeseman” by scomber on the digccMixter, a creative commons music library. Matt found this, and I absolutely adore this song, both for its evil perfection in the context of the podcast, but also the lyrics are just amazing in their own cheese-centric right. “Overdosie Rosie” by an artist named Tracky Birthday is one of the more awesomely disturbing songs I’ve heard in a while. I also found this one on the Free Music Archive. What a cool site! Storytellers: Jackie Vleck, Jennie Josephson & Fred Goss Part One: Jackie Vleck, “Of Turf and Cheddar” Part Two:  Jennie Josephson, “I’m Really Rosie?” Part Three: Fred Goss, “I Dream of Camelot” Story Notes: In the intro to this week’s show, Fred told a great story from on set. In that story, “Liz” is Liz Meriweather, creator of New Girl on Fox. “She” refers to Zooey Deschanel, and “Prince” refers to FREAKIN’ PRINCE! Production Notes: Well, this week’s podcast featured amazing people, amazing stories, and less than perfect audio. For some reason, the audio on my mic split down the middle of both Jackie and Fred’s channel and made it sound (to my hyper-critical ears) a bit crap-tastic. And I recorded my final thoughts late Wednesday night on a mic at home, which was horribly over modulated, and I didn’t have the strength to re-do. Although I might go in the office today and fix that, b/c UGH. Also it was at least 90 degrees on the evening that we recorded this, and since we couldn’t run the A/C, I opened the window, which resulted in a more obvious room hum (coming from the machines on the roof). It’s not a deal breaker, but I wanted you to know that I noticed it! Ah well, you make every error at least twice, right? : )

It’s St. Patrick’s day which means we’re telling drinking stories! Colleen is nurtured by strippers, Flanagan can’t decided between a wine cooler, a WuWu, and a Stormy Prom Night, and Seth runs hard in the Big Easy. Part One: Colleen: “One Night at Scores” Part Two:  Matt: “The Wine Cooler in the Fridge” Part Three: Seth: “Running hard in the Big Easy” Behind the story:  Warning! If you are offended by stories about drinking, excessive drinking, underage drinking, lying while drinking, false accusations of misdoing to cover up past drinking, and/ or poor judgement before, during, and after drinking, this episode is not for you. This episode is brought to you by Matt Flanagan, who wanted to tell drinking stories on St Patrick’s Day. We brought in two specialists, Colleen Basis and Seth Cohen, who braved 90 degree heat in March (sorry East Coast) to tell stories from their wilder days. This podcast is dedicated to Alan Zibel, who has officially earned the title of Tell It Anyway’s number one fan for his excellent tweets about the show. Thanks, Alan! Production Notes: This was the first episode where I didn’t have to use a noise filter to remove the mysterious rattle! It’s not so mysterious, it’s an exhaust fan and apparently it has an off switch. So this time I was able to notice the subtler acoustic issues with the room — a constant vibration coming from some other equipment on the roof. So I did a gentler noise filter on that and it seemed to work. Then there was the issue of Matt Flanagan’s laugh. It is a decibel busting wonder, and someday I am going to get the waveform on his laugh tattooed on my person. But since I didn’t want it to blow out your eardrums, I did my best to manually dilute the impact of his laugh. Hopefully I did my job, but just as a precaution, maybe don’t be washing the delicate glassware? I’m trying to make sure it doesn’t affect the quality of the voices on the podcast.  Would love to know what you think, so feel free to email us at tellitanyway at gmail.com tweet us at @tellitany
