In this episode of Alimentary, I have a lovely chat with a philosopher, who has spent years exploring the ethical, environmental, and social implications of our food choices. In new book Hungry, Beautiful Animals, author Matthew C. Halteman aims to transform our perception of vegan living by focusing on what it promotes rather than what it restricts. Now, I am not a vegan myself but I am concerned about our food chain and love animals so, this was a really interesting conversation. Some of the perspectives that Matthew shares, we can absolutely apply to other areas of our lives. His book is a heartfelt, humane, and humorous exploration of how going vegan has brought abundance into his life. The book is a love letter to life itself in all forms, and presents an imaginative vision of a true, beautiful, and good world that motivates and sustains our deepest desires to be well. It's not about shame and blame, but about finding joy in the journey. Matthew is professor of philosophy at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a fellow at the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics in the UK. He is the author of Compassionate Eating as Care of Creation and co-editor of Philosophy Comes to Dinner: Arguments about the Ethics of Eating. He brings a philosopher's precision and a dog-lover's joyto explaining how human connection, humor, and forgiveness (for oneself and others) has been a part of his journey. So, I hope that you will enjoy my conversation with Matthew C Halteman. The store cupboard staple for this episode is Broccoli, which I can't believe hasn't been featured before!! What we eat isn't just personal — it's political. In this thought-provoking episode, Matthew C. Halteman, philosopher and author of Hungry, Beautiful Animals, joins Jennifer to reframe the ethics of veganism through the lens of joy, flourishing, and resistance.Instead of guilt or perfectionism, Matt advocates for ethical and vegan eating as an act of joyful defiance — a way to challenge systems of oppression while embracing personal and collective well-being. Together, they explore:How vegan ethics intersects with moral philosophy and political activismWhy joyful resistance is more effective than guilt in driving changeThe role of food justice, sustainability, and compassionate living in ethical eatingHow to shift from a scarcity mindset to an abundance-based approach to activismWhether you're vegan, veg-curious, or simply interested in the political and ethical dimensions of what's on your plate, this episode will challenge and inspire you.

This week's show is with Matthew C. Halteman. Matthew is professor of philosophy at Calvin University (MI, USA) and the Oxford Centre for Animals Ethics (UK). He is the author of Hungry Beautiful Animals: The Joyful Case for Going Vegan and co-editor of Philosophy Comes to Dinner: Arguments about the Ethics of Eating. Matthew's work is driven by deep commitments to human flourishing, animal freedom, food systems transformation, and communal cooperation to realise as much truth, beauty, and goodness as we collectively can. He loves Arsenal Football Club, the television show Twin Peaks, and vegan desserts (especially tiramisu!). In this rich and thought-provoking conversation, Lian and Matt explore the profound intersections between dietary choices, ethics, and the search for a more liberated way of living. Matt shares how his agricultural roots once framed his understanding of food, only for a childhood visit to a slaughterhouse to plant a seed of dissonance that would take decades to fully bloom. Through philosophy, emotional connection, and a series of serendipitous interventions, he found himself drawn to a new way of being - one that prioritises creaturely flourishing over rigid ideology. The conversation weaves through the personal and the mythical, touching on the tensions between authenticity and openness, the allure of fundamentalism, and the freedom found in conscious food choices. Lian also reflects on her own lifelong path as a vegan, seeing it through a fresh lens of self-inquiry and deeper meaning. This is not just a discussion about diet; it's an invitation to rethink our most ordinary, intimate rituals - what we eat, why we eat it, and how that shapes the world we create. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: Food is more than sustenance—it is ritual, identity, and philosophy. Whether we realise it or not, our dietary choices are woven into our values, relationships, and personal mythologies. Flourishing matters more than dogma. Instead of rigid rules, Matt invites us to see going vegan not as an ‘ism' but as an aspiration—one that prioritises the joy and freedom of all living beings rather than simply avoiding harm. The mythical exists in the mundane. By examining something as fundamental as food, we open doors to greater self-awareness, transformation, and connection to the sacred in everyday life. The brainchild of an obscure Yugoslav physician, Krebiozen emerged in 1951 as an alleged cancer treatment. Andrew Ivy, a University of Illinois vice president and a famed physiologist dubbed “the conscience of U.S. science,” wholeheartedly embraced Krebiozen. Ivy's impeccable credentials and reputation made the treatment seem like another midcentury medical miracle. But after years of controversy, the improbable saga ended with Krebiozen proved a sham, its inventor fleeing the country, and Ivy's reputation and legacy in ruins. Matthew C. Ehrlich's history of Krebiozen tells a quintessential story of quackery. Though most experts dismissed the treatment, it found passionate public support not only among cancer patients but also people in good health. The treatment's rise and fall took place against the backdrop of America's never-ending suspicion of educational, scientific, and medical expertise. In addition, Ehrlich examines why people readily believe misinformation and struggle to maintain hope in the face of grave threats to well-being. A dramatic account of fraud and misplaced trust, The Krebiozen Hoax: How a Mysterious Cancer Drug Shook Organized Medicine (U Illinois Press, 2024) shines a light on a forgotten medical scandal and its all-too-familiar relevance in the twenty-first century. Matthew C. Ehrlich is professor emeritus of journalism at the University of Illinois. He has previously published five books including Dangerous Ideas on Campus: Sex, Conspiracy, and Academic Freedom in the Age of JFK and Kansas City vs. Oakland: The Bitter Sports Rivalry That Defined an Era. The Between is a tabletop roleplaying game about a group of mysterious monster hunters in Victorian-era London. They are residents of a place called Hargrave House, and their job is to investigate and neutralize monstrous threats terrorizing the city—threats that Scotland Yard won't or can't handle themselves. As the story progresses, they become aware of the plans of a Moriarty-style criminal mastermind they will eventually have to face in order to save Queen and country. The Between is directly inspired by the gothic horror TV show Penny Dreadful, but also takes a lot of inspiration from British horror classics, graphic novels like From Hell and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and pulp-era stories. Mechanically, it's Powered by the Apocalypse but also uses the mystery system from Brindlewood Bay. Will technological progress create better drivers' cars in the future, or will it be a hindrance to driving fun? Porsche has introduced a hybrid 911 GTS for 2025, so the guys debate if humanity has reached ‘peak 911.' They debate sedans with good steering feel for Daniel S. in D.C. Then, Matthew C. in Boston wonders if he should ignore the light and keep driving? Social media questions ask if Lexus interiors feel as luxurious as they claim, what are some of the best autobahn executive sedans that made it to the US, and if the guys were forced to stop driving altogether which final car would they want to review?
