Our episode today focuses on anti-corruption messaging: what messaging has looked like in the past, the challenges and risks it poses, and novel approaches that could yield better results. Holly Sandalow, Program Officer at CIPE's Anti-Corruption & Governance Center, sits down with Caryn Peiffer, Associate Professor in International Public Policy and Governance at the University of Bristol, and Nic Cheeseman, Professor of Democracy at the University of Birmingham, who have authored the new How-to Guide to Anti-Corruption Messaging in partnership with CIPE and with support from the National Democratic Institute. Anti-corruption campaigns have been a staple of both foreign aid programming and civil society over the last 30 years, and there is often an element of awareness-raising that involves producing messages about the harm that corruption can do. There is growing concern, however, that anti-corruption messages may be ineffective—or even do more harm than good—in part because they are not being tailored, targeted and tested to make sure they have the desired effect. Drawing upon their own research and studies by fellow academics about the impacts & efficacy of anti-corruption messaging, Peiffer and Cheeseman discuss the risks of deploying messages that have not been rigorously tailored, targeted, and tested. Is Boxing in South London working? Now, we've seen so many boxes from south London Chamberlain, Riakporhe, Azeez, Bentley, Cheeseman all winning titles, but we've never felt confident that at the top level we had guys that can do it. In our discussion with Karen, she highlights collaborative relationships in the communities Mackinac Straights Health System serves including how they integrate tribal medicine into a small hospital. Karen shares the story of a newly built facility thanks to innovative ideas and a land donation by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.  “We're addressing the care needs in a very comprehensive way in the community, including tribal medicine”  -Karen Cheeseman Karen has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mackinac Straits Health System since 2017.  Previously, Karen worked for the health system for many years and held various leadership roles including the Chief Operating Officer and the Chief Human Resource Officer.  Karen holds a master's degree in Organizational Management from Spring Arbor University and a Bachelor's degree in Human Resource Management from Michigan State University.  Karen currently serves on the Michigan Health and Hospital Association Board of Directors.  She has served as the Upper Peninsula Hospital Council Chair, the Small and Rural Health Council, and the Legislative Policy Panel for MHA.  Karen is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
