It's time for the final episode in our Summer Staff Picks series, highlighting our favorite conversations from the Here's The Thing archives. This week, we revisit Alec Baldwin's 2013 conversation with “The First Lady of Broadway,” Elaine Stritch. Alec sat down with the late stage and screen veteran who, among many famous roles, played his mother Colleen Donaghy on “30 Rock.” Stritch spoke to Alec about her transition from the Sacred Heart Convent and finishing school to finding herself in New York theater classes sitting between Walter Matthau and Marlon Brando. She performed for nearly 70 years – and of her extraordinary career, Stritch comments, "I was the funny, kind of offbeat girl. I was never the romantic lead.” This wide-ranging conversation with the witty and outspoken legend touches on everything from her time on the “30 Rock” set to Stritch's famous cabaret act at the Carlyle Hotel. Our exit today has us trying to become more cultured with the help of Hugh Grant. This week, we are discussing Small Time Crooks, written and directed by Woody Allen. Along the way, we also defend Ishtar, talk about the terrific ensembles Woody is able to put together, lament a wasted Elaine Stritch, as well as wonder why Hugh Grant keeps playing art dealers. Plus, Tracy Ullmann, Jackie Chan, Alec Guinness, Edward G. Robinson more Road Trip slander, forgotten Disney films, and a long debate as to whether Woody Allen convinces us as a felon. Actor and comedian Jack McBrayer is known for his cheerful demeanor, captivating Southern charm and impeccable comedic timing. The Georgia native honed his improv skills at the famed Second City in Chicago before gaining national exposure for his portrayal of various characters on “Late Night with Conan O'Brien.” He then landed the role of a lifetime: the earnest and eccentric NBC page Kenneth Parcell on the hit television series "30 Rock." His iconic performance earned him an Emmy nomination and a Screen Actors Guild Award. McBrayer has also voiced countless animated characters and created, produced and starred in the Apple TV+ series, “Hello Jack! The Kindness Show.” His latest venture is HGTV's “Zillow Gone Wild,” which explores some of the most unusual, extravagant, and quirky homes listed on the real estate website – and which premiered this past May. Jack McBrayer shares with host Alec Baldwin why he enjoys working with ensembles, what it was like filming their last scene together and how he was once mistaken for a real NBC page by none other than Elaine Stritch on the “30 Rock” set. Dennis is joined via Zoom by filmmaker Brian Sloan whose 1997 gay rom-com I Think I Do is coming to streaming this month in a newly restored version. It's also being celebrated at a Newfest screening and cast reunion on April 15th at the BAM Rose Cinemas in New York City. Brian talks about what originally inspired him to write the movie, the thrill of arriving at set on Day 1 and seeing all those trucks and how hard it was to cast the movie because no agents or managers wanted their clients to play gay characters. He also shares memories of working with cast members Tuc Watkins, Guillermo Diaz, Christian Maelen and the late Alexis Arquette. Other topics include: why he chose to feature multiple Partridge Family songs on the film's soundtrack, seeing the movie Porky's behind his parents' back, playing hardball with Elaine Stritch, wanting to be blond Chris Partridge and the thrill of meeting multiple married gay couples who say that going to see I Think I Do together was their first date.

Lou Burno has worked as a professional bass player since the early 1960s, playing with both commercial and jazz groups. He performed with jazz legends John Mehegan, Dill Jones, Zoot Sims, Carmen Leggio, Toots Thielmans, and Bucky Pizzarelli, among others. He attended the Manhattan School of Music where he received both BMus and MMus degrees. After his training at Manhattan, he was a member of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra for four seasons, and then moved to Vienna, Austria to study with Ludwig Streicher at the Vienna Hochschule für Musik. On returning to NYC in the late 1970s, he became a free-lance player, concentrating on both Broadway and concert work. Since his return he's been a member of the Brooklyn Philharmonic, American Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Pops. Among the many Broadway shows he's performed on are “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “End of the Rainbow,” and “Guys and Dolls.” Lou has also performed on the soundtracks to many major Hollywood films. He worked in Elaine Stritch's band for eleven years on her one-woman Broadway show, “Elaine Stritch at Liberty,” and her night club appearances at the Carlyle Hotel. He appears in the 2012 documentary film about her, entitled “Shoot Me.” Check out www.thebridgeportjazztrio.com
Zoë Coombs Marr has been making us laugh for years. You might have seen her doing award winning stand up comedy, often doing meta shows that twist our brains. Maybe you caught her alter ego Dave, or have seen Zoë pop up on The Weekly, The Project and watched her brilliant 3 part series Queerstralia.Zoë is one of my favourite creators; she always keeps me guessing with what she'll do next, and she always does it differently to everyone else. Her 2024 comedy show seems to be her most personal to date, cos it's her story. “Every Single Thing In My Whole Entire Life” will see her dig through it all, on stage across Australia. It's an idea that lends itself well to a soundtrack, which is why I asked her to Take 5. From Elaine Stritch to Yothu Yindi to Romy, this is a funny and glorious conversation about life itself.Yothu Yindi - Treaty Elaine Stritch - Are You Having Any Fun The Lemonheads - The Outdoor Type Hot Chip - Bath Full of EcstasyRomy - Enjoy Your Life

From playing opposite Angela Lansbury and Elaine Stritch in the Broadway Revival of A Little Night Music, to starring as Clary Fray in the hit demon-fighting TV series, Shadowhunters, Katherine McNamara can slay the game in a corset or combat boots. U Guys, it's a special Holiday edition of the BwayWorld Recap! Then I am joined by my dearest sister-friend, Kat McNamara, to chat about her incredible career which spans from Broadway to TV/Film. Kat made her Broadway debut at the age of 14 as Fredrika in the Broadway Revival of A Little Night Music, having the distinction of playing the role before and after a cast change-over. Her co-stars included Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta-Jones, as well as Elaine Stritch and Bernadette Peters. Kat shares her experience making her debut alongside some of Broadway's biggest stars, and how she learned from each of these incredible women. Then Kat goes on to talk about the differences between acting on the stage and acting on camera, in amazing projects like The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, and on shows like Shadowhunters, Walker Independence, and Arrow. Katherine's talents truly know no bounds, and on top of it all, she is an absolute delight of a person (I would know, she's been my bestie since I was ten years old). This is the seventh and final episode in my series of conversations with author OLIVER SODEN regarding his recent book: MASQUERADE: THE LIVES OF NOEL COWARD This week we explore the final chapters of both Coward's life and this brilliant biography. Remarkably, during the final decade of his life Coward wrote the book, music & lyrics for two Broadway musicals — SAIL AWAY (starring Elaine Stritch) and THE GIRL WHO CAME TO SUPPER (Starring Jose Ferer & Florence Henderson), and directed HIGH SPIRITS (with book, music & lyrics by Hugh Martin & Timothy Gray and starring Tammy Grimes & Beatrice Lillie) which was based on Coward's play Blithe Spirit. At the same time he enjoyed an extraordinary revival of his status as a playwright of including landmark productions of PRIVATE LIVES and HAY FEVER as the first play by a living author to be presented at the National Theatre, and culminating in a remarkable trio of new plays under the title of SUITE IN THREE KEYS that he wrote and starred in. And I feel certain that you will find Soden's account of Coward's final public appearance, with Marlene Dietrich on his arm, at a special performance of the hit off-Broadway revue Oh, Coward! to be very moving. In this episode we look at how an evil 1st century apocalyptic blood cult that secretly and not so secretly controls much of our lives with its over represented influence on media and politics is terrified of Disney. After the spooky month we've had it's time for a fun family friendly palate cleanser. If you look for lists of Disney witches you will find there is somewhere in the region of 140 of them. Disney had already created an impressive catalogue of witches by the time the company embarked on its first feature length film, so it came as no surprise their first feature length film antagonist would be a witch. Which is where we start our list of cameo special guest stars like The Evil Queen, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Magic mirror on the wall, American Film Institute, Hannibal Lector from Silence of the Lambs, Barbie, Regan MacNeil from The Exorcist, The Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, Lucille La Verne, Babes in the Woods, Hansel and Gretel, Brother's Grimm, Ursula, the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid, Ariel, Eve, Garden of Eden, Bea Arthur, Rosanne Barr, Elaine Stritch, Pat Carroll, Shakespeare, Devine, Deborah Bunting, The Owl House, Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, American Family Association, One Million Moms, Jamie Gooch, Ron Desantis, Vanessa Hudgens, Dead Hot: Season of the Witch, GG Magree, Salem, Bounding Into Comics, Jacob Smith, High School Musical and Kevin Sorbo on the comeback trail. Blue-Collar Love Song - John Turturro's Romance & Cigarettes I've been wanting to talk this movie for quite some time. I'm not exactly sure when and where I first saw John Turturro's Romance & Cigarettes. I had heard stories of a "Working-Class, James Gandolfini led Romantic/Musical Comedy". With no idea what to expect, the film would finally find it's way into limited release sometime in 2007 - shortly after it would find its way to home video, where - I believe - I finally saw it. It exceeded any expectations I may have had and did away with any fears that may have come with it. I love this film and am thrilled to finally get Mr. Chavez to sit down and give it a watch. This is a fun talk looking into a surprising, tender, and heartfelt performance from James Gandolifini; with Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet, Steve Buscemi, Aida Turturro, Mandy Moore, Mary Louise Parker, and stand-out performances from Christopher Walken (excessively Christopher Walken) and the great Broadway actress, Elaine Stritch in a beautifully nuanced performance that will make you realize the injustice of her not having a lengthier filmography. There's quite a bit to unpack here. We hope you enjoy the talk. Questions, Comments, Complaints, and Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks.
In light of the year that has passed since Stephen Sondheim left, Dan and Joshua convene to talk about what the year has looked like with his absence. Touching upon PBS' broadcast of the 2010 80th birthday tribute concert, the co-hosts reflect on the year that's passed and make their usual comments about such topics as the current Broadway revival of Into the woods, musical theatre fan service, and Elaine Stritch, the only woman alive. Based on a true story, The Exorcism of Emily Rose opens on a desolate landscape, a weathered farmhouse the only dwelling in sight. One thing we learn right away: Emily Rose, a girl of 19, is dead, and her condition shakes the medical examiner who comes to visit. Emily, we discover, has died as the result of demonic possession… or six demonic possessions… or maybe none. Erin Bruner, a top-notch defense attorney, is assigned to defend the priest who exorcised Emily, Father Richard Moore, who stands accused of having cut off the girl from medical treatments she was undergoing. Father Moore is offered a plea deal, but rejects it, as he feels Emily's story must be told. Hoping to make partner at her law firm, Erin is determined to follow her instincts, but between Father Moore's compelling testimony and some very strange happenings in her own life, Erin starts to wonder if perhaps, against all odds, possession is real, and can be proven in a court of law. Intro, Math Class, and Debate Society (spoiler-free) 0:00-15:20 Honor Roll and Detention (spoiler-heavy) 15:21-41:47 Superlatives (so. many. spoilers.) 41:48-1:01:58 David Grimm is a Brooklyn-based award-winning playwright and screenwriter. The follow-up episode to my previous Forgotten Broadway episode is an epic one, chock full of fascinating composers, lyricists, performers and shows. We begin with a tribute to birthday boy Leonard Bernstein, a song from Peter Pan sung by gay Broadway icon Larry Kert. From there we encounter shows by Lerner and Loewe, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Kander and Ebb, Cy Coleman, Dorothy Fields, Strouse and Adams, Jerry Herman, Stephen Sondheim, Schmidt and Jones, Vernon Duke, Mary Rodgers, Sigmund Romberg, Harold Rome and Leroy Anderson, among others, performed by Jane Powell, Pat Suzuki, Melba Moore, Rita Gardner, Jack Cassidy, Rebecca Luker, Cesare Siepi, Susan Johnson, Dody Goodman, Pearl Bailey, Ezio Pinza, Elaine Stritch, Shannon Bolin, and others. Diverse topics discussed include the Broadway revue, queer subjects and performers, and the place of performers of color on Broadway. This is a long episode that I recommend listening to in segments! And please be aware that an equally mammoth third segment on Forgotten Broadway will be published this weekend for my Patreon supporters! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Denis' career encompasses almost every aspect of show business from singing and performing to recording and composing. His musical career began at the age of six as a banjolele-playing singer at children's matinees. By the 1950s and early 60s, he was a member of Britain's first ever boy band The King Brothers, one of the most successful pop groups of that era and the youngest Variety act to play the London Palladium. From pop star to award-winning TV composer (including the Black Beauty theme and Lovejoy), to award-winning theatre composer (Privates On Parade) and songwriter, and collaborating along the way with such legends as Alan Ayckbourn, Sammy Cahn and Don Black, the artists with whom Denis has worked (and played) read like a who's who of British and American stage and screen--Tony Bennett, Nina Simone, Peter Sellers, Howard Keel, Sophie Tucker, Lena Horne, Alma Cogan, Albert Finney, Dame Edna Everage, Maureen Lipman, Elaine Stritch, Dudley Moore, Bruce Forsyth, Ronnie Corbett, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and even Jimi Hendrix. His highly acclaimed and entertaining memoir KEY CHANGES revised and updated 2020 edition can be purchased from our SHOP.For more career information and a full archive see deniskingmusiclibrary.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We know you're beeeesy but we implore you to listen to this week's episode because we are finally talking about Jenna Maroney and the Moms of 30 Rock! We long for the golden age of the Thursday night NBC lineup where 30 Rock was one third of 'The Office' and 'Parks and Recreation' Holy Trinity. We then queen on out two episodes where we are simply overwhelmed at the lady power of guest spots that includes Jan Hooks, Patti Lupone, and Elaine Stritch. We take a moment to acknolwedge the fay Jack Donaghy, Julianne Moore's unfortunate arc as one of Jack's old flames, and Jan Hooks' iconic delivery of, "I've got the meat, Jack."
