This week's episode is a repost of an episode from January 2023 with Professor Mike McLaughlin, originally from county Antrim, who is a Research Professor with the University of Adelaide, Australia and is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow with Teagasc. Soils are the most important resource the human race has. Without a productive soil there wouldn't be any farming or food production. Understanding the core functionality of soil is fundamental to a management strategy for a long term productive soil. Prof. Mike McLaughlin talks about the basics of soil and how factors in soils help or hinder nutrient uptake. He also talks about the function of clay and how low pH can affect the very nature of clay including dissolving the clay and affecting the cation exchange function of the soil. Prof. McLaughlin says that when DAP is applied to the soil it starts off quite alkaline but then as the ammonia breaks down becomes acidic which can help with uptake in higher pH soils. In part 2 of my interview with Mike McLaughlin, he talks about the O R O Ranch and their horses. He also gives his definition of a cowboy, “A guy who is willing to get on any horse they hand him and go out and do his job the best he knows how to do it and if it needs to be roped then you rope it and if it needs to be put through a gate, you put it through the gate. But you don't back off because your horses aren't that good.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cowboy-stories/support

In this episode, we feature retired SANDAG planner and longtime C-3 member, Mike McLaughlin. He discusses how transportation is linked to responsible land-use decisions, and why many of the planning challenges from 40 years ago are still relevant today. Mike talks about the Smart Growth Movement, and where we go from here to best prepare for the future and get the next generations on board. Mike also reflects on how we might break that impasse between meeting our housing needs and protecting the environment. Timestamps: [4:12] Mike shares what brought him to SANDAG, and how it happened almost by accident. [8:12] What was leading the conversations in the 1980s about the tensions San Diego faced between the call for more housing and the protection of the environment? And, just how aware was the public of these issues? [8:40] One of the values of the Habitat Conversation Plan is that you were bringing both the building industry needs, along with the environmental needs, the need to protect endangered and rare species, and the building industry that needs to respond to the tremendous growth and development that was pressuring the San Diego region. [17:02] Mike talks about his time at SANDAG overseeing both land use and environmental decisions. [20:20] Mike thinks the focus has been on the wrong “D” word. While the focus was always on density, he thinks it should be on the design. [23:17] San Diego and the surrounding regions are classic illustrations of how transit-oriented development can be very successful. [27:41] In hindsight, what could have been done with the genesis of the Smart Growth Plan in San Diego? [31:56] Mike looks at the mesas, valleys, and canyons, and how those three different features are used for forced land practices in one way or another. [33:20] One of the main roles that SANDAG provided was obviously the recognized allocator of federal and state transportation money. So SANDAG makes decisions about literally billions of dollars of transportation infrastructure. [38:19] Why was Mike disinvited from a Solana Beach city council meeting? [39:59] What has changed in SANDAG's 2020 plan compared to the 2030 housing forecast? [51:26] Mike speaks on discovering C-3 and what made him want to get involved. [59:10] How can C-3 change to meet the needs of our time both presently and in the future? About C-3 In its 60 years of existence, Citizens Coordinate for Century 3 (C-3) has brought together local thought leaders from planning, design, policy, academia, community development, and more to address our region's distinctive and pressing land use challenges. In founding C-3 almost 60 years ago, architect Lloyd Ruocco's vision was to bring together our region's most creative minds from the arts, sciences, academia, and government to share ideas, learn new perspectives, and build fellowship around the idea of creating livable communities. Ken: To begin with Mike I wanted to ask what was going on and what were some of the things that you were struggling when you started the “I Have Value” program? Mike: Pretty darn bad PTSD That I learned to cope with. We attacked it with no chemistry involved, which you know for once something finally worked with it. But I was also having pretty severe marital problems as well. Most of those were because of PTSD, depression, bipolar (type 2), and I am a rapid cycler. Which Ken can attest to he's seen me do it. How did the saying go if you know the “why” you may do for most any “how” and I had learned the “Why” Ken: When we started the program what was it that you were hoping to gain from it? Mike: Serenity, serenity in my marriage, Which was a huge huge undertaking, Denise, rest her soul. We were great together, we thought we were great together. We were going through some really hard times and I figured out what it was. I figured out what the issue was and we could not have solved it then. Ken: How did those feelings of guilt play out in your life? Mike: What's the phrase If You Don't Heal What Hurt You, You'll Bleed On People Who Didn't Cut You - Marcie Lyons probably one of the best answers to that question without going into a huge explanation. Skills are where it starts, realizing when you go through this and come out on the other side, when you go through life's battles Like my cousin Jim says in his book “Touching The Dragon”, you are going to come out with scars. Those scars manifest in the form of emotional intelligence, the ability to step out of ourselves and be empathetic. I know each and everyone of you are going out there and working your butt off. I mean brain jobs are harder than any physical work. Here's another thing it is not if but when the Sedona Method If not now then When? Ken: What would you say to those that are sitting on the fence trying to decide whether or not they are a good fit for this program? Mike: Okay first off, If you sit with Crow on the fence you're going to fall with the crow off the fence. Get off the fence. You know we like the earth, people bear fruit. You are not here by mistake, none of you. If I can come to this conclusion myself then there's not a person around that it is unable. Have a little bit of faith, Definitely have some faith in yourselves I mean you're going to go through it, don't give up.
