Former Gonzaga Headmaster, Dr. Joseph Ciancaglini famously said the arrival of three things factored into saving Gonzaga: Tom Sluby '80, Father Dooley, S.J., and the Metro. And what a renaissance grew out of that confluence. Joe explains his assessment of three factors as well as his personal connection (you may not have known) to the late Fr. Allen Novotny, S.J., and how important he was to keeping Fr. Dooley's momentum going. Ciancaglini's journey to Eye Street almost ended as quickly as it began. It's an all-time Opal Bell story you won't forget. Joe passes a lot of credit for the success under his leadership to his capable contemporaries, but his impact as a teacher, to admissions director, then headmaster, was profound. (If you need an example - listen to S1E13 and listen to his impact on Helen Free) Dr. C. presided over major growth in enrollment. He witnessed dramatic improvement in athletics, academics, spiritual and extra curricular offerings at Gonzaga. But the big life lessons and takeaways he shares at this stage of his career will remind you of the warmth, heart and humility you knew from his time on Eye Street. Since the taping, we learned that Dr. Joseph Ciancaglini just announced last month (12/14/21) his intention to retire from the Convent School of the Sacred Heart in NYC at the conclusion of the 2022-2023 school year. We wish him all the best. And thank him for all he did for Gonzaga.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Humanise The Numbers - for ambitious accountants in practice

Why on earth, would you take a blind bit of notice of a technologist talking about Humanise The Numbers for an accountancy practice like yours? Well, over the years, Matt Flanagan from BlueHub has built a reputation for really knowing his onions when it comes to the technology, but because he's helped so many firms install, implement, and habitualise technology across their firms, he sort of knows what differentiates the best firms from all the other firms in the profession. So why not join Matt and I on this Humanise The Numbers podcast, and seek out the one or two things that you can implement in your firm, so that you transform the performance of your team, the performance of your firm as a whole, but also maybe even transform the performance of one or two of your clients too.I hope you get a chance to listen to Matt, I loved the discussion. He's so down to earth, so practical, it's definitely worth a listen.

This episode features Robert Davidson a qualified accountant with a rich background that includes playing professional poker for 4 years! With his extensive experience in the industry, and having worked within the Big 4 firms,he started Appacus App Advisory with Matt Flanagan and David Robinson at BlueHub in 2019. Their aim is to help accountants and their clients bridge the gap of understanding between operational and financial systems, enabling them to have maximum control over the often overwhelming app spaces, allowing the to future-proof their practices. Robert is an advocate for cloud accounting and having planned and managed the cloud rollout for a successful national accounting firm in Scotland, its safe to say we have the one of best on this episode to shed further insight! We covered: How a cloud visionary saw what was coming for cloud accounting a few years before everyone else The parallels between professional poker players and professional accountants Is a cloud accounting specialist the best way for firms to go? The complexities accountants face in differentiating between all the different apps when advising clients The skills accountants will need going forward when it comes to apps and technology The current problems: Why accounting source systems like Quickbooks, Sage and Xero might not be the most important system for a business client The accounting app landscape for accountants and their clients is overwhelming - one vendor may offer 2000 updates a year Many accounting firms are lagging with cloud accounting because they don't fully understand the benefits Many accountants feel like they need to know 120% of everything before they give an answer The mistakes accounting firms make when doing app advisory for their clients The required skillset of an accountant is changing rapidly to incorporate the advance of technology The benefits of cloud accounting: Appacus is a community of forward-thinking firms to share best practice on apps and integrations The technology available today is making compliance much quicker and advisory more powerful for accounting firms Advisory for accountants is not management accounts and dashboards - it's the interpretation of that information For accounting clients, advisory is only value if the client can understand it and it helps them make decisions Accounting cloud apps can bring client engagement, sales processes and onboarding down from months and weeks to days Apps are simply tools to solve pain points, provide information and help people make decisions Big Takeaways: Accountants - it's better that you go to your clients with suggestions than the other way around. The worst advice about app advisory that finds its way into the accounting market We are just touching the surface with app advisory - so many more are coming out! (https://bdacademy.pro/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/matt-flanagan.jpg) Matt Flanagan is a cloud business systems specialist, working in close partnership with forward thinking accountants to support their transition to cloud accounting & developing relevant advisory services. Matt’s background was 15 years in enterprise IT delivery on HMRC & NHS platforms, leaving the corporate world in 2012 and has been working in the cloud accounting sphere since 2014. Matt has been monitoring and commentating on the 1st phase of Making Tax Digital (MTD) and accounting firm’s digital transition for the last 18 months. Cloud adoption and client selection are key areas that Matt works with firms to improve engagement and client retention, ensuring firms are thinking about being Advisory ready as well as MTD ready. Shownotes: Why the smaller, more agile firms are adopting cloud faster than the larger ones How FOMO (fear of missing out) is driving digital change as much as MTD Larger accounting firms are poor at setting themselves up internally to be more digital Putting one person in charge of digital and cloud adoption (cloud champion) doesn’t work – it needs a firm wide culture change Some accounting firms are still burying their heads in the sand and thinking digital is not going to happen Change management is at the heart of adopting cloud technologies The two biggest concerns for accounting firms moving to cloud – where to start and information overwhelm The British factor can hold us back in adopting change – we’re sometimes not as quick to change as say accountants in Australia and New Zealand The best accounting firms truly understand which clients they serve and how they serve them well The way many accountants sell is weak – software demos are no replacement for finding out what a client really need and where they want to be Communication is the main tool for the world class operator in any customer facing sector The new tech coming down the road requires major adapting skills from accounting professionals How accounting firms should hire tech people to drive growth Talk is cheap – the best accounting firms and accountants take action on their knowledge Poor advice given to accountants – don’t be the guinea pig and wait to see what others do with the tech For accounting firms, the decision to invest in software starts with asking what you want the tech to do for you and your clients In the next 3-5 years, the cloud accounting tech is going to be taken for granted The future for accounting firms is how they use the tech to interpret the data and use that to help clients make better decisions Many accounting firms neglect the basics when it comes to software and cloud accounting The 5 steps accounting firms need to go through in transitioning to digital To contact Matt: 07738 984 242 (United Kingdom)  Liked your Top 100 Club Podcast Interview with Rob Brown" target="_blank">email him directly>> https://www.linkedin.com/in/mattflanagan3/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mattflanagan3/) Twitter:  MattFlanBH (https://twitter.com/MattFlanBH)

DEBBIE GRABER READS FROM HER COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES KEVIN KRAMER STARTS ON MONDAY WITH MATT FLANAGAN

Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday (Unnamed Press) Debbie Graber’s debut short story collection, Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday is a trenchant and searing satirical look at office life that is as astute and hilarious as Joshua Ferris’s And Then We Came to the End. These thirteen stories skewer corporate culture, as told through souls adrift in a khaki-clad purgatory. And Graber knows from what she writes – she has held a number of jobs in corporate America, which informed her gimlet-eyed writing. One of the aspects of the workplace that most interested her are the personas are forced to adopt. “It’s like they exist in a far flung area of the time space continuum where reason seems to always be taking a vacation day,” says Graber, “If we’re spending all these hours in make-believe land, what does that say about the work we are doing? What does it say about us?   In Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday, our hero Kevin Kramer is the new Senior Vice President of the Products Profit center at Production Solutions. He has worked hard for all his success, perfected the non-clammy handshake, and speaks “corporate” like a second language. But our Kevin Kramer harbors many dark secrets. As do many of the characters in Graber’s stories: An HR manager trying desperately to maintain order, even as the entire software department vanishes under mysterious circumstances. An estranged (and possibly deranged) sister devises her reunion by throwing together a DIY wedding shower. A man who wears a Chewbacca costume feels he is uniquely qualified to divide the world into winners and losers. And a call center representative tries to give himself a pep talk after a particularly egregious client interaction. With a wit and voice all its own, with Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday, Debbie Graber announces herself as a literary talent to watch. Praise for Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday “The stories in Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday are funny and funny-sad, formally bold, and a total delight to read. Graber captures perfectly the absurdities of contemporary, corporate America and her fabulous debut reminds us that we are all searching for meaning and human connection, whether it be from friends, family, or reply-all emails.”-Edan Lepucki, author of California “Debbie Graber's stories are crisp, sardonic, and funny—as antic and acerbic as they are intelligent and alert. A sly and incisive observer of human nature, Debbie Graber will win you over with this delightful debut.”-Sara Levine, author of Treasure Island!!! "Evil, evil, evil stories-- If you know the devil, you should buy him this for Christmas."-Ben Loory, author of Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day “Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday offers satirical fiction that causes you to howl with laughter at the same moment its sharply exposed horrors cut into you. Debbie Graber's stories capture the absurdities of the 21st century corporate workplace in which white-collar millenials find their inboxes always brimming with new incentives for betrayal and self-betrayal. Neither the powerless nor the powerful outrun their demons in these brilliantly funny and bruising tales of American "enterprise."-Kevin McIlvoy, author ofThe Fifth Station “Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday skewers that place where so many of us spend our days and about which we spend the other hours of our lives complaining: the modern workplace. In this bitingly funny, precisely crafted collection, Debbie Graber takes on office excess: happy hours, overtime, trysts, and petty grievances. In doing so, she questions our societal notions of success and failure and invites us to laugh at our bosses and coworkers and, perhaps most of all, ourselves—knowing that if we don’t laugh, we just might cry. Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday is satire at its most incisive.”-Lori Ostlund, author of After the Parade "With laugh-out-loud humor and a wildly keen eye for detail, Graber doesn't just brilliantly satirize our heavily corporate and medicated world, she wonderfully eviscerates it."-J. Ryan Stradal, author of Kitchens of the Great Midwest Debbie Graber has performed at Second City, worked in an office, and received an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from U.C. Riverside at Palm Desert.  Her stories have appeared in The Nervous Breakdown, Harpers, Zyzzyva, Hobart, and elsewhere. Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday is her first collection of stories. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband. Matt Flanagan began his career as a writer for The Late Show With David Letterman, wrote movies you haven't seen, and several shows that were canceled after 13 episodes. I had a cushy corporate job as a Project Manager at Cap Gemini. The people were great, the role was enjoyable & I had a secure career. As is the nature of the corporate structure (and my impatience), my career progression was not at the pace I wanted. This frustration led to a conversation with an old friend over a BBQ and a beer, which resulted in us both quitting our jobs and starting a company. The next day was quite the hangover… We purchased BlueHub a Software Development and Integrations company. Up to this last year, our focus was on bespoke development until we made the move to Xero. BlueHub focused on software development for over ten years. The cost of bespoke priced us out of smaller businesses. We began using “off the shelf” cloud products to manage BlueHub. We started using Xero and WorkflowMax. Once we saw how good these cloud-based systems were, we asked ourselves; “Why are we reinventing the wheel?” We started testing a range of Xero Add-ons & cloud systems, re-marketing to lost clients and spread the word of affordable Cloud. The uptake was incredible! We found a solution that cut the costs, sped up the delivery and increased the amount of people we could help. Now we help clients across sectors find, set-up and integrate cloud systems. From our past, we are able to assist users with complex integrations. www.bluehub.co.uk https://www.facebook.com/BlueHubSolutions @blue_hub https://www.linkedin.com/company/bluehub-solutions-ltd- https://plus.google.com/+BlueHubSolutionsLtdPriorslee/posts http://www.bluehub.co.uk/blog.cfm

It’s St. Patrick’s day which means we’re telling drinking stories! Colleen is nurtured by strippers, Flanagan can’t decided between a wine cooler, a WuWu, and a Stormy Prom Night, and Seth runs hard in the Big Easy. MP3     Show Notes: Form: The 3fer: Three people, three stories, one theme and let’s see if they connect. Theme: In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, three drinking stories and the consequences thereof. The music: “Unlocked Door” used by permission of Alex Cook. Thank you Alex! If you want to hear the complete songs, check out Alex Cook’s bandcamp page and his website Stonebalancer Alex is going to be on this very show, this very next week! Some of the music provided tonight from Mevio’s Music Alley. Check it out at music.mevio.com including “358 Hangovers A Year” by Jim Paquette, and “Drunken Sailor” by Blaggards. Storytellers: Colleen Basis is an acting coach and part-time Canadian homemaker. She is a graduate of The George Washington University. Matt Flanagan is a writer and fart producer. He don’t tweet so much. More about Matt at IMDB Matt is an alumni of George Washington University’s improv comedy group Recess. Seth Cohen is a comedy writer who has worked on Bad Teacher and Undateable. Watch Undateable Tuesday nights on NBC! Part One: Colleen: “One Night at Scores” Part Two:  Matt: “The Wine Cooler in the Fridge” Part Three: Seth: “Running hard in the Big Easy” Behind the story:  Warning! If you are offended by stories about drinking, excessive drinking, underage drinking, lying while drinking, false accusations of misdoing to cover up past drinking, and/ or poor judgement before, during, and after drinking, this episode is not for you. This episode is brought to you by Matt Flanagan, who wanted to tell drinking stories on St Patrick’s Day. We brought in two specialists, Colleen Basis and Seth Cohen, who braved 90 degree heat in March (sorry East Coast) to tell stories from their wilder days. This podcast is dedicated to Alan Zibel, who has officially earned the title of Tell It Anyway’s number one fan for his excellent tweets about the show. Thanks, Alan! Production Notes: This was the first episode where I didn’t have to use a noise filter to remove the mysterious rattle! It’s not so mysterious, it’s an exhaust fan and apparently it has an off switch. So this time I was able to notice the subtler acoustic issues with the room — a constant vibration coming from some other equipment on the roof. So I did a gentler noise filter on that and it seemed to work. Then there was the issue of Matt Flanagan’s laugh. It is a decibel busting wonder, and someday I am going to get the waveform on his laugh tattooed on my person. But since I didn’t want it to blow out your eardrums, I did my best to manually dilute the impact of his laugh. Hopefully I did my job, but just as a precaution, maybe don’t be washing the delicate glassware? As always you can subscribe to the podcast, there’s an iTunes page coming soon, and email us your thoughts at tellitanyway@gmail.com Or you can tweet us at twitter.com/tellitany. Oh and we have a Facebook page! Talk at you next week!
