The jazz standard “Makin' Whoopee” — introduced in a 1928 stage musical with a performance by legendary song-and-dance man Eddie Cantor — is built around the sassiest words ever penned by one of the great lyricists of the Roarin' Twenties.Gus Kahn was born in 1886 in Bruschied, Germany, son of a cattle farmer who emigrated to the United States four years later and moved his family to Chicago. After graduating from high school, Gus worked as a clerk in a mail order business before launching one of the most successful and prolific careers on Tin Pan Alley. In the next 30 years, Kahn contributed to an extraordinary number of Great American Songbook numbers. Like what? you say. Like “Pretty Baby,” “Ain't We Got Fun?,” “Carolina in the Morning,” “Toot, Toot, Tootsie *Goo' Bye!),” “Yes Sir, That's My Baby,” “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” “Dream a Little Dream of Me.”No wonder that in 1951 — 10 years after his death — Gus was featured in a popular movie about his life. “I'll See You in My Dreams” starred Danny Thomas as Kahn opposite Doris Day as Gus's wife, Grace LeBoy. The film was a serious hit, Warner Brothers' second-highest-grossing film of the entire year.Walter DonaldsonGus had a life-long friendship with his main collaborator, composer Walter Donaldson (who you may remember from our earlier post about their “My Blue Heaven.”) Their first collaboration was “My Buddy” in 1922. They went on to compose over one hundred songs together. In 1928, the pair composed all the tunes for a show called “Whoopee!” based on Owen Davis's play, “The Nervous Wreck.” Included in the score was “Makin' Whoopee,” the winking-est and nodding-est number of the season. The title refers to love and marriage. Quickly, though, "making whoopee" becoming a euphemism for recreational love making. Gus's lyrics begin with a sardonic celebration of a wedding (“another bride, another June … a lot of shoes, a lot of rice”), then moves on to the love nest and babies and responsibilities (‘washing dishes and baby clothes, he's so ambitious he even sews…) but then to affairs and confrontations, possible divorce, a visit to a judge…The 1928 show was successful enough, but oh, that song! In the same year that it debuted on Broadway, it also was recorded Bing Crosby and Paul Whiteman and the next year by Rudy Vallée. Then in the 1950s, after that Danny Thomas / Doris Day movie, the song was back in a big way, with versions by Nat King Cole, Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald. And that isn't the end. More recently, it has been recorded Dr. John and Rickie Lee Jones, by Cyndi Lauper and Tony Bennett, by Rod Stewart and Elton John. Our Take on the TuneHonestly, we don't know how a band that's been around for nearly half a century — one that has a special love for novelty and good-time tunes of the 1920s and ‘30s — could have missed this one.But the fact is it's only now that The Flood started playing around with this classic. Guess it took our newest members — Veezy Coffman and Danny Cox — to open our ears to it. We're sure glad they did. This is a public episode. #652 - Robert Creighton The Robert Creighton Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. It's a good day today because we have Robert Creighton as the guest. We'll be playing Paul's interview with the great, versatile artist. Robert Creighton is one of those all-arounders. He is a singer, actor, dancer, composer, author, recording artist and on top of that, a very friendly gentleman. The great thing about Creighton is the selection of songs he records. His debut album entitled “Ain't We Got Fun!” was produced by Georgia Stitt. There are singers of the American Songbook classics who interpret the same songs. Don't get us wrong, we love “My Funny Valentine” and “Moon River,” but Creighton goes back even further. He covers the George M. Cohan classic “Yankee Doodle” and “Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams,” an obscure song originally recorded by Bing Crosby. Creighton even wrote his own song for the album. Talent? Creighton has it in spades. It all started with those black and white films… Now, one of the most common emails Paul gets is how unique the content is. We appreciate everyone who writes in, and we also appreciate all of our contributors. If you'd like to be one, you can go to thepaulleslie.com/support and help keep the show going. Thank you to everyone who is contributing. And now ladies and gentlemen, Robert Creighton in interview! The Paul Leslie Hour - Helping People Tell Their Stories is a talk show with new episodes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. What’s that making its way down Hollywood Blvd to Carthay Circle in Disney’s California Adventure? That’s nothing but an old jalopy, or is it? That old jalopy makes its way down Hollywood Blvd multiple times a day. The five jazz performers and one powerful vocalist riding along are none other than the Five and Dime. The Five and Dime fit the 1920s theme of Buena Vista Street perfectly and set the stage for your day at Disney’s California Adventure. The 15-minute show has been performed daily since the re-dedication of DCA in 2012. The group sold everything they had back in Chicago, purchased the jalopy, and drove all the way to Hollywood to make it big in the movie business. Dime, the singer, is quick to drop her microphone and start the jazz with 1920s and 30s classics like “I Got Rhythm” and “Ain’t We Got Fun”. All that fun proves too much for Goofy to resist joining in on the action. As the story goes, the Five fellas from Chicago and the female vocalist named Dime hit it big when they met a fellow midwestern dreamer named Walt Disney! Check your times guide; between The Five and Dime and The Red Car Trolley News Boys, there is always something hopping in Carthay Circle.

As her mum noisily makes breakfast Jessica calls the police forcing Malus to flee; but Alisa stays hoping to convince her daughter that, despite everything, she is the same person from seventeen years ago. Elsewhere at breakfast, and the morning after the night before, Malcolm Ducasse (Eka Darville) notices Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor) behaving erratically and he confronts her about the I.G.H. inhaler she took from Simpson. As tempers flare Malcolm leaves to pursue the investigation into Hogarth's partners. As his P.I. skills hit their stride he discovers both another side to Benowitz (Maury Ginsberg) and a familiar side of his own, that he has trouble controlling. In Jeri’s apartment, after Inez’s new information about the patients at IGH, she visits a man called Shane Ryback (Eden Marryshow) in prison. Jeri Hogarth (Carrie-Anne Moss) takes on his case, pro-Bono, as her new client can heal people with his hands. Back at Jessica’s apartment, the door opens, as in walks Jessica and Alisa. A change of heart by Jessica led them to flee Malus’ house before the police arrived. However, despite the strain between them, back at the apartment, the tension in the air is cut through by a few whiskeys and a gunshot!
