Kerry and Collin look at the often maligned 2004 comedy "Surviving Christmas," starring Ben Affleck, James Gandolfini, Christina Applegate and Catherine O'Hara and find it's not quite as terrible as critics (Collin included) made it out to be twenty years ago. Is it the two decades of distance from the Bennifer annoyance of that time period? How much money would it take for you to bring in a character like Affleck's into your home for two weeks? What about those lyrics they sing for "O Christmas Tree"? All thee questions deserve answers. Plus, to make up for the "lost episode" from February, there is a mini Blu-ray segment as well as a Book segment.    Blu-rays covered: Warner; "Amadeus" (1984) - 4K Criterion: "King Lear" (1987) Warner Archive: "Tom & Jerry - The Complete Cinemascope Cartoon Collection" "Gabriel Over the White House" (1933)   Book movies covered: "Weekend" (1967) "Patton" (1970) "Braveheart" (1995)

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree, How lovely are your branches! That’s certainly true for the branches of the Christmas Tree star cluster – a family of young stars in the constellation Monoceros, the unicorn. The cluster’s brighter stars form the outline of a Christmas tree. Other stars look like ribbons of lights decorating the tree. The cluster is about 2500 light-years away. All of its stars are infants – no more than a few million years old. The most impressive member of the cluster is 15 Monocerotis. It’s a binary – two stars bound by their mutual gravitational pull. One of the stars appears to be about 10 times the mass of the Sun, while the other is more than 30 times the Sun’s mass. Both stars are tens of thousands of degrees hotter than the Sun. Such stars produce a lot of ultraviolet energy. The U-V zaps giant plumes of hydrogen gas that permeate the cluster, making the gas shine bright pink – forming the branches of the Christmas Tree. Blobs of cold gas and dust create dark silhouettes against that background. New stars are taking shape inside some of those blobs. The Christmas Tree Cluster climbs into view in the east in early evening. Under dark skies it’s just visible to the eye as a faint smudge of light. A telescope reveals a few of its individual stars and the faint glow of the gas. Long-exposure images reveal the full beauty of this cosmic Christmas tree. Script by Damond Benningfield

What's up, dudes? Adam Pope from Wizards! The Podcast Guide to Comics and The Retro Network (Geekster) is here to talk about the unbelievable phenomenon that was Teddy Ruxpin! It's Ken Forsse's terrific talking teddy bear…no, Illiop! In fact, there was a even a special presentation book with matching Santa outfit called "Teddy Ruxpin's Christmas!"  In the land of Grundo, the anthropomorphic bear Teddy Ruxpin and his Octopede friend Grubby help us earthlings to celebrate Christmas. They immediately launch into a medley of carols: “Here we Come A'Wassaling”, “Deck the Halls", "The Holly and the Ivy", and "Good King Wenceslas.” Newton Gimmick and friends join up with the duo, and the gang sing a special Grundo version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Grubby jokes of running out legs while keeping track of days in the song, and Gimmick begins a medley of “Carol of the Bells” and “Jingle Bells.”Ever the comedian, Grubby complains his ears are still ringing. Meanwhile, the friends are joined by another group of carolers. They perform “O Christmas Tree” and Gimmick subsequently suggests that Teddy and Grubby tell the story of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The choir bids us farewell singing “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.”Cassettes? Check. Books? Need ‘em. Obligatory Santa outfit and carol sing? For sure! So grab your Illiop, call your Octopede friend, and sing along with this Teddy Ruxpin Christmas episode!Wizards!Twitter: @WizardsComicsIG: @wizards_comicsFB: @TRNsocialCheck us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! Each Christmas season millions of Americans place trees in their homes — draped in lights, engulfed in ornaments, a bundle of beautifully wrapped gifts gathered beneath the branches. It's a beloved tradition with a complicated origin. What if a guided tour of the Christmas story meant you'd never look at a Christmas tree the same way again?Series overview: Ever wondered why some of our cherished Christmas traditions are so…cherished? It's kind of weird that we put ornament-adorned trees in our homes and immerse our neighborhoods in lights and deck our halls with boughs of holly, all while waiting for a chubby old man ensconced in velvet to break into our homes via chimney. How did all of that start? And what does it mean? And why does it matter? We're going to pull all of it apart and then put it back together in surprising and delightful ways as we spend this December Reconstructing Christmas.

These interviews were used as primary research to create Thinking Cap Theatre's original holiday play with music, O CHRISTMAS TREE. The play centers on a South Florida family that starts a new tradition and visits a North Florida 'cut-and-choose' tree farm after the lights on their artificial tree dim. The Sustainable Minimalists Podcast

Ah, the holidays. The 5-ish weeks between Black Friday and New Year's Day tend to be an extended party of sorts in which many of us overspend, overeat/drink, overdecorate, and excessively waste. The excesses associated with the holidays come with a hefty environmental cost: on average, US households produce 25% more trash than normal between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day; worse, wonton wastefulness can (and does) add more than half a metric ton onto our annual carbon footprints.I believe it's entirely possible to have a joyous December without the waste and so, on today's show, we discuss practical ways to spread holiday cheer with the planet in mind. Here's a preview:[2:00] Artificial, local, root ball intact, and more: Breaking down the Christmas tree conundrum via Steph's handy dandy grading rubric[17:00] 4 of the most impactful (and practical!) ways to spread good tidings without being wasteful, according to mathematics Resources mentioned:Organic Christmas Tree Farms Near You DatabaseThe Carbon Trust's Tips For A More Sustainable Christmas (via Carbon Trust)Join us on Instagram! (Seriously! Kansas Wheat Update Learning From Past Droughts O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree   00:01:10— Kansas Wheat Update:  Kansas has almost over night it seems, began experiencing far cooler temperatures. With that in mind, I was joined by two K-State agents from across the state to provide updates on current wheat conditions in their areas. K-State agriculture and natural resources agent for Sedgwick County, Jeff Seiler, and multi-county agronomist for far northwest Kansas, Jeanne Falk Jones, share insight on the wheat that was planted in their areas, emergence rates so far, and concerns continuing into the growing season.   00:12:16 — Learning From Past Droughts: K-State range scientist, Keith Harmoney, recently did a deep dive on research dating back to even the 1930's looking at the impacts of different instances of drought in Kansas. He summarizes what data showed from the 1930's and 1950's and provides gleans advice away from that data for producers to implement now to better prepare for and endure drought conditions. Keith's Beef Tips article for more information 00:23:08 — O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree: For many, the holidays are symbolized by the Christmas Tree. For some, it's an artificial tree, and for others it's a trip to a local tree farm or tree lot to pick out a live tree. If you're getting a live tree, K-State forester Charlie Barden says there are several things to consider – selection, care and proper disposal.   Send comments, questions, or requests for copies of past programs to ksrenews@ksu.edu. Agriculture Today is a daily program featuring Kansas State University agricultural specialists and other experts examining ag issues facing Kansas and the nation. It is hosted by Samantha Bennett and distributed to radio stations throughout Kansas and as a daily podcast.   K‑State Research and Extension is a short name for the Kansas State University Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service, a program designed to generate and distribute useful knowledge for the well‑being of Kansans. Supported by county, state, federal and private funds, the program has county Extension offices, experiment fields, area Extension offices and regional research centers statewide.
