From Cancer to Coma, at the age of 24 Matt Ode was diagnosed with stage 3C Testicular cancer. After chemotherapy and a very complicated surgery to remove the remaining cancer from his body, Matt encountered various complications. He was under the watch and care of the ICU for over 40 days and in the Cleveland Clinic for 53 days where he was met with a number of near-death experiences including 5 major surgeries causing a large open wound on his stomach. For two weeks, he laid non-responsive in a coma, met with complete kidney and liver failure, and went into cardiac arrest where nurses performed 8 minutes of CPR to bring him back to life. Doctors didn't know if and when he would awake, informing his family and girlfriend he would likely be on dialysis the rest of his life having to relearn everyday tasks like eating and walking again. Prior to the diagnosis and subsequent treatment, Matt was a healthy personal trainer weighing in at 185 lb. But this disease wreaked havoc on his body and in a matter of 8 months he dwindled down to a mere 110 lbs. In today's episode, we sat down and talked with Canadian Strongman Mitchell Hooper! Mitchell Hooper (aka the Moose) exploded onto the Strongman scene in 2021 after deadlifting 475kg at under 140kg body weight. Mitchell has only been doing strength sports for three years and recently made his professional debut, representing Canada at the 2022 World's Strongest Man competition. Mitchell won his qualifying heat against seasoned competitors and made the final where he finished 8th in the world as a rookie. Mitchell recently competed in Giants Live where he placed 2nd. He is now preparing for the World Deadlift Championships where he plans on breaking the world deadlift record. During his amateur lifting career Mitchell competed in Strongman and Powerlifting while living and working in Australia. Mitchell won every competition he entered and broke multiple national records including a 475kg deadlift and 232kg atlas stone. In 2021, Mitchell also placed first in the Static Monsters Worldwide competition with a new World Record total of 665kg. Mitchell draws on his varied sporting background which included marathon running, bodybuilding, NFL, golf and swimming. Outside of Strongman, Mitchell runs an Exercise Physiology Clinic in Barrie, Ontario where he hopes to use exercise to improve the quality of life of the general population. Mitchell is also focused on growing his Strength Coaching business – Team Moose which provides sport strength specific coaching and programming to athletes interested in powerlifting and strongman. In 2010, he won the Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism for his story “Meet the Parents,” which tracked an international kidnapping-to-adoption ring. Carney has spent extensive time in South Asia and speaks Hindi. He attended Kenyon College and has a masters degree in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Alexia Monardo is a professional dancer born and raised in Toronto, Canada. In 2014 she graduated from Ryerson University's Performance Dance Program, obtaining her BFA in Dance. With over 23 years of dance training in various styles, Alexia has performed at events and festivals all over Toronto/GTA, as well as numerous provinces across Canada. She has toured internationally several times, performing in countries such as China, Qatar, Singapore and the Bahamas. Alexia is a dance teacher, and certified meditation and mindfulness instructor, with a passion for fitness and strength training. She has spent 7 years weight training in the gym under the guidance of her trainer Garrett Moher. Alexia started training in the gym to improve her strength and endurance for her dance career.
