In this episode of “Conversations on Health Care,” Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter talk with Christian Heiden, founder of Levo International, and Alissa Wassung, executive director of the Food is Medicine Coalition, about how their work is shaping the future of healthcare through food. For Heiden, hydroponic farming offers an innovative way to get fresh, nutritious food into the hands of people who need it most. “We've seen case studies where diet alone has prevented people from needing multi-million dollar surgeries,” he shares, emphasizing how access to healthier food can directly improve health outcomes. Wassung, whose coalition delivers medically tailored meals to patients with serious illnesses, highlights the broader impact. “Researchers at Tufts found that if every eligible patient received medically tailored meals, we could save $13.6 billion—with a B—in just one year,” she explains. “This is a tremendous opportunity to build a more efficient and effective healthcare system.” But this movement isn't just about numbers—it's about people. Heiden and Wassung embody a generational shift in how we view food and medicine, bringing fresh energy to solutions that could transform healthcare. Their work demonstrates that investing in food-based healthcare solutions isn't just good for patients—it's good for communities and the economy, too. This week we discuss "Food is Medicine".  The concept of "food is medicine" refers to the idea that certain foods and dietary patterns can play a significant role in promoting health, preventing disease, and managing chronic conditions.   This concept is based on the notion that food is not only a source of energy and nutrients but also a powerful tool for influencing our physiological and biochemical processes.  Access to affordable, nutritious food is crucial for good health, yet many Americans, particularly in under-resourced communities, face barriers. The result? A $1.1 trillion healthcare bill for diet-related diseases — equal to all the money we currently spend on food itself.

Send us a textOne of my favorite teachers and mentors, Andrea Nakayama, joined me today to discuss what she believes is missing in traditional healthcare: our personal stories. So many of us are hyper focused on what we can do, what supplement we need, what lab to get done, what protocol to follow, how much protein to eat, etc. We are grasping for a fix. While these can be helpful, we often forget that the individual plays a critical role. Understanding our own narratives—reflecting on our life experiences, emotions, and individual histories—is often the missing piece.Engaging with the humanities (like poetry, art, and storytelling) cultivates deeper listening and understanding of who we are. Andrea underscores that this deeper connection can facilitate healing, especially for women navigating significant hormonal and life changes in perimenopause, menopause and post menopause. What moves us—our emotions and truths—can offer insight into our health and healing journeys. Andrea urges us to embrace our stories as powerful tools for improving our health and well-being and to include them as part of our healing journey. Andrea believes Narrative Medicine is what we are missing in Healthcare today.I deeply enjoyed this rich discussion with Andrea and I know you will too. BIO- Andrea Nakayama is a Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator, who has led thousands of clients, and now teaches even more coaches and clinicians around the world in a revolution reclaiming ownership of both their own and their clients' health. Jenn discusses their upbringing in a food desert and the impact of generational food insecurity on their family. Epispde 213 - Hello Health Heroes! Very excited to have Dr. Greg Hammer on the show to discuss red light therapy. Just recently a good friend of mine, Matt lended his red therapy device to a 90 year old man that was hit by a car and wasn't even eating anymore which is a sign he was dying. As soon as the red light therapy hit his skin he started improving and very soon he got him drinking GREEN 85 for nutrition and last I heard he's doing great. Another lady that had stage 4 cancer Matt lended his Kangen water machine, the red light therapy device and got her on GREEN 85 and she's also doing fantastic and healing nicely as of this writing. After hearing about these two examples I realized that it was time to share what I have learned about red light therapy. I hope that if you're struggling with your health or want optimal performance you will look into some of this therapy for yourself. Episode 211 - Hello Health Heroes! I was so pleased to have Ashley James back on the show to share how she has been doing after her daughter's death. For a while she let her health slide and had a lot of guilt and shame around not being as healthy as possible. After a long period of grief Ashley rebounded and started getting back to the basic fundamentals of health. She then was inspired to write her workbook titled “Addicted To Wellness”. This is an action book and I really like it. It has many of the fundamentals of health that I teach in it and being in workbook form it is very unique since we live in a reality that requires action to make change. Ashley and I cover many topics and I am sure you will find a few golden nuggets of wisdom you can apply to your life and help you make the changes you desire. Episode 210 - Hello Health Heroes! The public school systems were once a great idea but they have been hijacked by corporate and political interests. The schools teach stuff that's not proper for young children, the food they serve is toxic and many of the buildings are dilapidated and have air and water that are not clean. The solution to all of this is that the people who really care about children and their health and development can create their own schools to serve the public. I just read in our local newspaper that public school attendance in Oregon is continuing to drop. Why? Because parents are demanding a better learning environment for their kids. As this trend continues it opens up opportunities for those truly passionate about education to create their own schools that treat the child as a whole person, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. In this episode I was fortunate enough to meet Ms. Amber who has started her own preschool around better education and wellness. Its been such a success that she now owns multiple locations and is now training others on how to do what she did to create financial freedom for herself while providing the best education for her children. If you're looking for a bulletproof industry to start a business and you're passionate about education then you are going to love this episode. Here to guide us toward an evidence-based, rational model for nutritional health and teach us how to distinguish good nutrition science is one of the world's leading and most innovative researchers, Christopher Gardner, Ph.D. Dr. Gardner is the Director of Nutrition Studies at the Stanford Prevention Research Center and a Rehnborg Farquhar Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. He's been researching the health effects of a plant-based diet for 20 years, and his research has provided significant and practical health insights to better inform our everyday dietary decisions. Today we dive into the following topics: What we know and don't know about diet, weight loss, obesity, diabetes, heart & metabolic health; the diet wars: plant-based vs. carnivore vs. Mediterranean & low-fat vs. low carb; common misconceptions about protein requirements; the importance of personalized nutrition and finding a sustainable diet for long-term success; what makes a rigorous scientific study and why knowing a study's funding source is important; what defines a healthy microbiome; and why diet is the most under-appreciated, underutilized factor in preventing disease. Dr. Gardner is an absolute delight. It was an honor to spend time with him. I hope you find his insights clarifying, informative, actionable—and perhaps even life-saving.
