Vampires live their lives by rules - but who polices them? Welcome to the Office of the Night, where vampires Catrin and Magnus keep an uneasy peace between the living and the undead. Party All Night Vampire Circuit Parties? Someone's set up a series of tasting clubs at which vampires massacre unsuspecting human invitees. Magnus and Catrin must stop this before the craze goes viral. It's Jane's first day as human liaison to the Office of the Night and it may well be her last. Blood Bank Some vampires choose not to kill for blood – they prefer to have it supplied. It's a lifestyle choice. There's a thriving red market in liquid gold. But the vampires running the Red Market are worried – something's contaminating the blood – a contaminant that for some is a drug and for others is lethal. If the Red Market falls, then their customers are suddenly going to get very hungry. Under the Sun A vampire cult has sprung up allowing vampires the ultimate cure – the ability to walk in the sun. Catrin and Magnus are worried. Is the cult a trick, or will it change the way that vampires feed, unleashing terror on the world? Note: This production features scenes of vampiric feeding and blood consumption.

DoubleLine Portfolio Managers Jeffrey Mayberry and Samuel Lau face the heat outdoors and indoors recapping the red market week of Oct. 2-6 before a timely revisit of recession indicators (16:43). Jeff and Sam take a look at the still inverted 2s10s and 3s10s on the U.S. Treasury yield curve and what the de-inverting of these two signals could mean for the timeline of a possible recession arrival. It might be sooner than you think. The two also run through some other recession indicators, including the LEI and a strong labor market, that are sending out mixed signals (28:17). For the market week (1:01), Jeff and Sam discuss a rough run for stocks and fixed income (4:23) before looking at a pretty good performance for commodities (6:58). Over in Macro Land (9:20), data prints included a beat of expectations for the ISM Manufacturing PMI (still contractionary) and a very big beat for nonfarm payrolls (11:34). This week's Fed Speak includes the proposition that doing nothing is an activity (14:02). Next week will bring a flood of data prints, including PPI, CPI and import numbers (31:51). This episode was recorded after market close on Oct. 6, 2023. Mark chats with Dharma Kelleher who writes action-driven thrillers that explore the complexities of social and criminal justice in a world that favors the privileged. She is one of the only openly transgender authors in the crime fiction genre. They talk about that and a lot more. In their conversation, Mark and Dharma talk about Dharma's "long, torrid" life-long affair with writing, and beginning to write on a manual typewriter in their teenage years What happened in the intervening years, including getting a degree in journalism Coming out as transgender, initially to self in college, and then later on. And the challenges of doing that in the deep south of the US Celebrating 25 years of marriage in 2023 Falling back in love with writing in 2007 thanks to NaNoWriMo Spending eight years focusing mostly on the craft of writing Pitching to 90 agents and then landing a deal with a New York publisher Coming to the realization that the trad pub model wasn't going to work (due to the publisher requiring print book rights even though they weren't planning on publishing beyond eBook) Getting tired of hearing the "we already had a transgender author book this year" from publishers Red Market's release in February 2023 and how Dharma is selling it directly before doing a wide publishing release How you get it early and get more when you buy it direct from the author Switching from a WooCommerce to a Shopify website for direct sales Doing the best they can to deliver their books to any customer wherever they are on the planet Being the first person in Arizona to donate a kidney to a stranger and how that was part of the inspiration for Red Market The Jinx Ballou Crime Thriller series and how crime thrillers, mysteries, etc are often about "justice" Some of the things writers can get wrong when they include transgender characters in their fiction Disclosure (Netflix) - that takes a deep dive into those tropes The importance of giving transgender characters agency in fiction How the tropes can cause real harm, not just hurt feelings Dharma's love of numbers and love of writing being among their biggest passions And more... Today we are diving into the grotesque and illegal trade of organs and human materials known as the red market. There have been numerous accounts of illegal organ transplants in multitudes of nations, except for the U.S., Besides a few tales here and there, it looks like on the outside that the United States has kept their hands clean in comparison. Is that the truth though? Today we are diving into the United States and if it has a bigger hand at play in the red market than we may think.

Last week's trading tips made money in a red market, and there should be a fair chance the same will happen this week as several stocks are set for a re-bounce. Timing the trade is crucial, and in this week's podcast, we give more insight into how to do it. Gold is a little weaker than expected, while oil continues up, and we see no reason why it should not continue upwards. April's consumer price index numbers are coming on Wednesday, and several quarter results. Are we heading for even higher inflation numbers, or will they cool down? We do our best to predict the week ahead and give you insight into what we think the future will hold and where the buying opportunities are. At the very end of the podcast, you will find this week's trading tips, which, given a good entry-level should return some nice gains.
We believe, like last week, that this will be a red week for the markets. But if played correctly, red markets may be very profitable. Last week the Borr Drilling trade was closed with a 42% profit. This week we have 5 tips and Nivida is one of them. Summer and fall are coming fast, and today's decisions will be tomorrow's profit or loss. In this week's podcast, we take a quick look at what may wait further up the road and how to prepare for it. Gold is on the path to $2.500 and the 10-year treasury yield is 2.71. The Ukraine conflict will again escalate and that should push markets down. This and much more in this week's podcast.

After a brief hiatus I am back with an all new episode of the 7th Generation Podcast. Episode 33. In this new show I talk about my trip to the Indigenous Red Market in Oakland, CA. It was a beautiful day up in the bay. I was able to catch up with Indigenous Chef Crystal Wahpepah, founder and creator of Wahpepahs Kitchen and I talk about Frank Waln and John Paul Hodge who both performed at the the Indigenous Red Market. Check out my instagram for pictures and videos @7thgenpodcast. In the last segment of the show I discuss some of the recent developments in Canada with the discovery of 215 unmarked graves at the Kamloops Indian residential boarding school. I also talk about the history of the boarding school system here in the US. It's a dark history folks, but it needs to be discussed. I am just trying to find my groove again. It's been a while since my last podcast, I'm definitely a little rusty so please bare with me. Investigative journalist and bestselling author Scott Carney is our guest as we discuss: what it means to be human, going deep in the Wim Hof method, benefits of cold exposure, climbing Kilimanjaro without a shirt, using The Wedge to change conversations with your limbic system, kettlebell throwing, and why you might want to embrace failure. Listen on: iTunes Spotify Stitcher Guest Bio: Scott Carney is an anthropologist, investigative journalist, author, and a seeker of both the fringes of human experience and the core of what makes us human. Scott has written four books to date, including The Enlightenment Trap, The Red Market, and What Doesn't Kill Us. Most recently, he authored The Wedge, which dives deeply into understanding the space between stimulus and response. Scott's work has been featured in many different magazines -- Wired, Mother Jones, Playboy, Foreign Policy, Men's Journal, National Public Radio. He has won the Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism and is a multi-finalist for the Livingston Award for International Journalism. This episode is in support of the Altruism in Medicine Institute, an organization founded by Barry Kerzin, a physician, teacher, author, and Tibetan Buddhist monk. The mission is to increase compassion and resilience among health care professionals and their patients. Compassion fatigue is a very real thing, especially in health care. Building your compassion muscle is one of the most potent tools not only for avoiding burnout, but for finding joy in what you do. Essentials of Emergency Medicine, the conference I host each year, is happening May 25-27, 2021. For an additional $100 off registration, use the code 'orman' at checkout. We discuss: The common theme of Scott’s books -- what does it mean to be human? [05:00]; Who is “The Iceman” Wim Hof and and why might cold water immersion lead to general resilience [09:10]; The three elements of the Wim Hof method and how they relate to the wedge [15:10]; An advantage of the Wim Hof method vs. other mind-body connection practices (like Tuomo) -- it’s fast and you can learn it in about 3 days [20:00]; Scott’s weekly cold water immersion practice with benefits that last 4-5 days [22:20]; Why ‘gritting it out’ is not an effective strategy for prolonged cold exposure [27:30]; Climbing up to Gilman’s Point on Kilimanjaro shirtless and without oxygen [30:15]; Scott’s sauna routine and the value of giving his body contrasts to adapt to new environments [33:25]; His latest book, The Wedge, and how the wedge is activating something within yourself in order to thrive in a difficult moment [36:25]; Using a library as a metaphor for the limbic system [39:20]; The philosophical question -- do we experience a shared reality? [44:20]; Applying the wedge in the emergency department when your heart is racing and you’re profusely sweating because you’re having difficulty with a critical procedure[49:25]; The solution (or wedge) for the mental irritation that often comes with reading opinions on social media [58:30]; Going from fear to joy to almost a spiritual place with kettlebell partner passing [01:04:30]; And more. Dr John and Dr Guy explore the short, terrifying, and intriguing history of the Red Market (aka. The Black Market... but for "Organ Trafficking"). Its a story of capitalism (on steroids), crime, and deceit... its been spectacularized as an urban legend... but at the end of the day, its the story of the illegal trafficking, harvesting, and theft of human organs. Oh my.

Scott Carney is a bestselling author, anthropologist and investigative journalist whose works blend narrative non-fiction with ethnography. Scott has worked in some of the most dangerous and unlikely corners of the world, spending extensive time in South Asia. He was a contributing editor at Wired for five years and his writing also appears in Mother Jones, Men’s Journal, Playboy, Foreign Policy, Discover, Outside and Fast Company. I find his journalistic work to be a cross between George Plimpton and Tim Ferriss – in that he is quite the participant in the journalistic work he does. His work has been the subject of a variety of radio and television programs, including NPR and National Geographic TV. In 2010, he won the Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism for his story “Meet the Parents,” which tracked an international kidnapping-to-adoption ring. He’s the author of four books including his recently published The Wedge which will be large part of our conversation in this episode. His other books include The Red Market, The Enlightenment Trap, and What Doesn’t Kill Us which was a New York Times bestseller. In this episode we discuss his award-winning book, The Red Market, based on his six years investigating the underground market for human bodies and body parts. I first came across his writing in What Doesn’t Kill Us. That book was about the semi-famous breathing guru, Wim Hof. As for context, I’ve summited Mt. Kilimanjaro and I had to put my water bottle inside my Gortex jacket to keep it from freezing, and Scott and Wim climbed it without a shirt on at negative thirty degrees. Scott explains how such “feats” are done. Wim endorsed Scott’s latest book, The Wedge, as "Crazy good writing" and I wholeheartedly agree. Ben Greenfield, who is also a NYTs bestselling author, said: “prepare to enter an intriguing world of self-improvement and physical and mental performance that you have never before discovered. Scott Carney, once again, has elegantly intertwined his ferocious style of immersive journalism with an entertaining educational approach that is sure to improve your life and longevity forever.” And both Dave “Bulletproof” Asprey and Amelia “Queen of Pain” Boone wrote Forewords. In The Wedge, Scott sets a framework of human evolution and migration, and introduces the concept of the power of choice as an equally significant evolutionary force vis-à-vis the limits of endurance. Key to this is what he calls “The Wedge,” in how humans can wedge control over automatic physiological responses into the breaking point between stress and biology. And off we go… Scott’s searched the globe for examples of what he calls “the subtle language of how the body responds to its environment.” We start with studying fear in a neuroscience laboratory at Stanford and then... Kettlebell partner passing, Sensory deprivation tanks (a la Altered States) Placebo paradox and mindful health experiments with breathing routines that border transcendence via Wim and DMT breathing, ayahuasca in a Peruvian Amazon jungle with a shaman, and “Kent & Lane” and MDMA augmented couples therapy We end with his recommendations on where someone could start if they were interested in their own personal exploration, to help us all live our lives in full.

#123 My awesome guest this week is Scott Carney, an investigative journalist, anthropologist and New York Times bestselling author of 'What Doesn't Kill Us'. I invited Scott on to the show to talk about his new book 'The Wedge: Evolution, Consciousness, Stress, and the Key to Human Resilience'. And with everything that is going on in the world right now, there couldn't be a better time than now to have this conversation. In Scott's own words: In 2011 I wrote an article for Playboy about the dare-devil ice guru Wim Hof with the intention of showing the world that he was a charlatan. But it didn’t work out the way I had expected. I tried his training and was surprised that the method worked. So instead of debunking him, I became the first journalist to take Hof seriously. I was something of an evangelist for Hof’s method of ice baths and breathing techniques and did some pretty crazy things--like walking up Mt. Kilimanjaro without a shirt at a pace that the U.S. Army predicted would kill me. What Doesn’t Kill Us told the story of my journey. As Hof became an international superstar, I began to wonder how much further I could push the lessons I learned with him. I wanted to do more than see how our bodies reacted to the cold, but in every environment. The sensations that we feel under stress—in heat, cold, sensory deprivation, while we're afraid—mirror physiological changes in hormones, metabolic function, and memory formation. Those reactions usually all considered autonomic functions, meaning we don't have conscious control over them. However, since we can decide what environments we inhabit, we actually have the power to change our underlying programming. The key is to paying attention to physical sensations and then modulating our emotional responses. The result is a concept that I call “The Wedge.” You can think of The Wedge as a way of creating a little space between stimulus from the response. Over the course of two years I started to develop new environmental training techniques. I confronted fear at a cutting-edge neuroscience laboratory at Stanford and learned a dance that involved throwing kettlebells between partners where one false move could either break a bone. I met masters of mental misdirection in Latvia who took me through a five-hour sauna, based on their traditional medicine system. I experimented with breathing techniques that took me to the cusp of transcendence; I floated in sensory deprivation tanks, and ultimately ended up in the Amazon jungle with a shaman who promised me either madness or universal truth. In the late fifties, the U.S. government promised Native Americans good jobs and stable housing if they left reservations for urban centers, including Oakland. Those promises were never realized. But something else happened, too. Instead of assimilating into cities like the federal government wanted, native people built solidarity, preserved traditions, and continued to create culture — both within their communities and between other indigenous ones. One of the ways that solidarity takes shape is at Oakland’s Indigenous Red Market, which happens on the first Sunday of every month in Fruitvale. Guest: Marisol Medina-Cadena, Reporter for KQED News You can read more of Marisol's story on the Indigenous Red Market here, and check out more info about the market on their Facebook page. We recently talked to Scott Carney, author of the recently published What doesn’t kill us (get the audiobook!). In it he investigates and subjects himself to cold, ice baths and other rather unusual training regimens, and discusses the detrimental effects of the comfort of our modern lives on our physical and mental health. He also goes on adventures, although with a sceptical mindset ever present, with the dutch “iceman” Wim Hof. It is a book about human biology and evolution, the possible causes and treatments of many of our modern day illnesses, and about realising that there is a lot of hidden comfort to be found in going beyond our comfort zone. We didn't get into all the specifics of the breathing techniques and other methods, mostly because this has been covered in great detail in interviews on other podcasts. Just google "scott carney podcast" for more on this. We believe our episode is still worth a listen after having heard some of these. Scott has also written two more books, The Red Market, and Death on Diamond Mountain, that we also touch upon in the podcast, as well as a lot of articles. Go to his webpage http://www.scottcarney.com for more info about him and his work. Thank you Scott! This is our first episode in English, and we decided to not put in any intro in Norwegian, to keep it in just one language. All our other episodes are so far in Norwegian, but we would love to make more in English. If you have any feedback or requests, let us know at larsogpaal@gmail.com, or at our facebook page. And if you would, please rate our show on Itunes, that’s always helpful. And by the way, the quote that we slightly mangle during the episode, stems from an essay from 1973 by the russian-american biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky, and is actually the title of the essay: "Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution”. Alt godt, hilsen Lars og Pål
If given the opportunity, would you climb Mt. Kilamanjaro in nothing but your shorts and sneakers? Would you trust a stuntman-turned-breathing guru with you life? On this week's Yoga Talk Show, you'll meet a guy who did just that—and survived to write a book about it. The guy is Scott Carney, and his teacher is former YTS guest, Wim Hof. He has worked in some of the most dangerous unlikely corners of the world, especially when writing his books, and we're here to talk about his brand new book today, "What Doesn't Kill Us," which is a New York Times bestseller, and I was so keen to get Scott on the show because essentially this book came about because Scott went on a journey to end up trying to debunk Wim Hof. [00:01:30] If you're not familiar with Wim Hof, we'll get into that as well today, but if you have been listening to my podcast for a while with myself and Stu, you'll realize that I've gone on and done Win Hof retreats, and spent some time with him, and I actually practice the breath work and [inaudible 00:01:08]. So it was great to get Scott on his journey and what he's discovered through his own mission. Ultimately, he's a really good, fun guy. He says it as it is. He wants to know the facts, and he digs deep to find out what's actually going on, and where's the line between myth and actually reality as well. Guy And our awesome guest today is Scott Carney, Scott, welcome to the show mate. Scott Hey, thanks for having me on. Guy Really appreciate it man, really appreciate it. It's a topic close to my heart, I was very excited about this one. Before we get into it Scott, we ask everyone on the show, if a complete stranger stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say? Scott God, that's a hard question because I don't talk to strangers, they scare me. I was told never, ever to speak with them. I'm an investigative journalist and anthropologist. If that isn't enough to bore the hell out of a stranger, I do not know what is. Full Transcript & Video Version: http://180nutrition.com.au/180-tv/scott-carney-interview/

For the majority of human history, a failing vital organ was a death sentence. Yet hard-won lessons from countless tragic medical experiments have given modern humans the amazing ability to swap a failing organ from a healthy one, often with good odds of surviving the operation. So where do the organs come from? Is there really any truth to the rumors of an illegal organ trade? Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

Self Directed Investor Talk: Alternative Asset Investing through Self-Directed IRA's & Solo 401k's
What’s your CODE RED plan for when the market shifts from “full steam ahead” to full retreat mode? It will happen for sure… and nobody knows when. Whether you're using a self-directed IRA, a self-directed 401k, family funds or any other capital, here are some important things to consider for when the market invariably shifts against you. I’m Bryan Ellis. This is episode 167.----Hello, SDI Nation! Welcome to the podcast of record for savvy, self-directed investors like you!The last 15 years or so have really been a financial roller coaster, haven’t they? Right now, it’s easy for everyone to focus on the last 5 years, during which the stock market and the real estate market in America have both been screaming upwards, notwithstanding a bit of a slowdown this year in stocks. But that’s not all there is to the story, is it?Let’s look slightly more broadly… say… 15 years. So, since December of 2000 to right now, December 2015, what’s REALLY happened?I think you’re going to be surprised. The S&P 500 has absolutely gone up… by a WHOPPING compounded annual growth rate of… drumroll please… 2.77%!On a nationwide basis, real estate hasn’t fared much better, increasing in the same period by a compounded annual growth rate of 3.23%.To be clear, neither of those numbers factor in the effect of cash flow – dividends for stocks or rents for real estate. Furthermore, it’s not particularly accurate to compare the performance of ALL real estate to the stock market, since 100% of the people buying stocks are doing so with the expectation of profit whereas the commanding majority of people buying real estate do so to use it for living. It would be far more accurate to compare all INVESTMENT real estate properties to the stock market rather than all real estate… but hey… I give you the data we have.I suspect those aren’t the numbers you expected to hear. After all, in the last 5 YEARS, the S&P’s annual number is nearly 11% and the media is full of reports about the astounding real estate appreciation in places like Northern California, Denver, Dallas, Nashville and Detroit. The difference is, of course, that the last 5 years represent only the up-cycle and not the rest of the story. What happens when the market shifts course? Maybe it will be a deep plunge. Maybe it will be a simple leveling off. Whatever the case, do you have a plan?I was asked a question yesterday that really illustrates this point well. One of your fellow listeners named Ted reached out to me. Ted has a bankroll of about $1.1M and is interested in buying some of the high-yielding turnkey rental properties we have available in Northern California. Ted’s side of the conversation went something like this:Bryan, I get it that it’s a great opportunity because I’m buying into a rapidly appreciating market, and because my property will actually yield very attractive rents, and because I’m paying a below-retail price. All of that makes sense to me and I’m ready to sign on the dotted line. But what happens if the economy in Northern California dries up? What then? This is a fair question. It’s absolutely possible that the economy could fall off… or a terrorist attack or anything else. Neither Ted nor I have a crystal ball. But what Ted has – what you have – is very powerful: The power of intention. Here’s what I mean: If Ted is clear about his intention for the investment, then that intention will guide him through changing market situations. In Ted’s case, he told me that he really likes the cash flow and tax benefits of rental property, and that’s why he’s bought a lot of other rental properties all over the country, mostly in lower-priced regions where his cash flow from rents is really strong. He also really likes that he’ll be able to easily pass on his rental property when that time comes. But what attracts him to THIS specific opportunity in Northern California versus buying more houses in other markets like Ohio or Indiana is the potential for real, near- AND long-term price appreciation. You see, in most markets, it’s not possible to get high ROI’s from rent AND strong property appreciation. Due to the fundamental nature of real estate markets, it’s nearly always an either-or. But in this case, Ted – and possibly you as well – can get very attractive cap rates of 6-10%... and do so in a market that Zillow predicts will appreciate by 19% in the coming 12 months. So to Ted, that appreciation is the attraction factor, but it doesn’t change his core objective: To generate strong cash flows and tax benefits. Will those things be affected if the economy in Northern California cools? No, they won’t. Rents won’t likely drop because there’s a severe housing shortage in the area with basically no new construction happening to alleviate the problem. So even if Ted – and Zillow – and most experts – are totally wrong, and the tech and financial sectors that drive Silicon Valley really cool down economically, Ted will still be getting what he wants… strong rents, great tax advantages, and a property that he can pass on to his heirs… and he’ll still be in a market that has HUGE, HUGE, HUGE upside potential. What about you? Do you have real clarity as to what you’re REALLY trying to accomplish with your investments. As an affluent investor, you’ve likely got your basic cash needs covered already. You’ve also likely got a collection of investments performing at various levels, and you probably have a bankroll of cash that you’re considering deploying… or maybe you’re thinking of cashing in stocks or annuities to be more liquid for the right kinds of opportunities. If your focus is cash flow, then day-to-day or even year-to-year price fluctuations really shouldn’t occupy your focus much. Similarly, rental income potential isn’t particularly relevant to short-term flippers, but market fluctuations can be really important. And one isn’t necessarily better than the other. It’s all about your specific objectives. What REALLY matters to you, my friends? This issue of priorities – more specific, CLARITY of priorities – is just huge. It’s core. It’s fundamental. By making the decisions RIGHT NOW about what things really matter to you, you’ll be able to make actual GOOD decisions – wise decisions – decisions that respect your capital… later on when a market changes or fundamentals shift, and you’re forced to make a “should I stay or should I go” type of decision. What did Ted decide? He’s going to diversify geographically and buy a few rental properties from us in Northern California. He’ll get the cash flow numbers he needs, the tax benefits he needs, and he’ll also get something he’s not getting from any of the other markets where he owns rentals: An extremely high probability… and almost historical certainty… that the properties he buys from us will experience substantial price appreciation over the long term. After all, look at San Francisco, the centerpiece of Northern California: There’s absolutely been price volatility over the years… but the long-term trend is positively, absolutely without a doubt… OVERWHELMINGLY POSITIVE.So here’s your homework for today, my friends:Assignment 1: Clarify your own priorities. Decide what really matters to you. What are the make-or-break requirements for your investments? Rental income, price appreciation, tax benefits, etc? Decide what matters to you as a basis for making your own wise investment decisions. And Assignment #2 is: If you’d like to own rental properties at VERY affordable prices that are BOTH high-yielding in cash flow and located in the blazing hot markets of northern California, then you’ve got to reach out to us RIGHT NOW at SDIRadio.com/nccashflow. That’s SDIRadio.com/nccashflow as in Northern California Cash Flow. You’re going to love what you find there, just like Ted did.My friends: Invest wisely today, and live well forever!
