    Matthew 22:37 requires us to love the Lord with all our heart, soul and mind. But everything starts with the mind. It is the mind that tells the rest of the body how to function and if we are to truly love the Lord with all of our heart and soul, it must start with the mind. That means we must intentionally feed our minds with those things that will cause us to behave in ways that are pleasing to the Lord so that our love of the Lord will be evident. In Philippians 4:8. Paul admonishes us to think on whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy. To think is a verb; it is an intentional action. When we intentionally think on positive things, our heart, soul and action will follow suit. It is important that we in the Christian community take the steps necessary to de-stigmatize mental health needs. God was gracious enough to supply us with people who are trained in assisting individuals who need help with developing strategies to heal from traumas in their lives.     On today's episode, we're talking about Autism, a condition that would be viewed as a mental challenge. Autism is a developmental disorder of variable severity that is characterized by difficulties in social interaction and communication and by restricted or repetitive patterns of thought and behavior. Today, I am speaking with Mr. Maurice Snell who is living his best life with autism. Maurice Snell is an individual living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and currently resides in Chicago, Illinois. His story began at Easter Seals as a youth when he was a client of what was then the Easter Seals Therapeutic Day School for individuals with autism. After eight years at Easter Seals, Maurice transitioned to Benito Juarez Community Academy High School. There, he was involved in many activities such as the Marine Corps Junior ROTC, Juarez Eagles Concert and Marching Band. He graduated in 2002 as a member of the National Honor Society ranked 13th of his senior class and then attended Saint Xavier University. During his time at Saint Xavier, he participated in various organizations such as the Student Success Program and their Concert Band. He graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor's in Liberal Studies. Maurice worked at Easter Seals Metropolitan Chicago until this year, in which he's currently employed at De La Salle Institute in Chicago as the Development Coordinator. Aside from his busy work schedule, Maurice continues to serve as an ambassador and inspirational story to many families impacted by autism and other special needs.     There are many among us who are visually impaired in some way- some completely blind, others who can see shadows, etc. but physical blindness doesn't discount one's abilities to see in other ways and accomplish great things. In Isaiah 42:16, the Isaiah prophesies about the coming messiah as being one who “will lead the blind by ways they have not known along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the thigs I do; I will not forsake them.” Rev. Pamela Shaw has been blind since birth, but her disability has not kept her from utilizing her abilities to advocate for herself and others and holding many prominent positions. She has more than 30 years of professional social work experience contributing to the development of policy and practice in the fields of homelessness, community mental health, deinstitutionalization, child welfare, family services and disability rights. Prior to her current position, Pamela was appointed by Governor Edward Rendell to serve as Director of the Pennsylvania Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services. She holds professional memberships in the American Association of Christian Counselors, the National Biblical Counseling Association and the National Association of Social Workers, and is a member of the Academy that Certifies Social Workers and is a Diplomate in Clinical Social Work.     We all face a myriad of challenges in life. The important thing to do is to be intentional to overcome those challenges rather than allowing the challenges to overcome us. Romans 8:37 tells us that we are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus who loves us. It goes on to say that there is absolutely nothing that can separate us from the love God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Today I want to welcome Miss Kimberly Waters. Miss Waters is a unique free-lance makeup-artist, fashionista and CP (cerebral palsy) advocate. Kimberly has worked in beauty retail in addition to the make-up and fashion industry for over 7 years, as she has an immense passion for it, and truly loves her craft. Kimberly has also trained under professional make-up artist, Maeion Bryant Beauty & Co. “The Mobile Beauty Connection,” which gave her the confidence and poise to pursue a career as a freelance make-up artist. Whether we are defined as physically challenged or people with a disability, we have gifts to share that can benefit humanity. Today I want to welcome Miss Emily Rowe and Mr. Ryan Ward. Miss Rowe is a 2020 graduate of Kennedy Krieger High School who has always been interested in Hospitality. Emily is now pursuing her interest in the Food and Beverage Management program at Montgomery College.     I'm sure that many of us have had experiences where we have either been hurt by someone else's assumptions about us or we have made assumptions about others rather than having a conversation. Often, when people make assumptions about others, it can be hurtful to the one the assumption is made about. But I want to encourage someone who is listening to don't ever allow others' assumptions about you to define you! You are defined by what God says about you- you are made in God's image; you are fearfully and wonderfully made (even if you have a physical challenge); you have everything you need because you belong to the creator and owner of the universe and everything in it! My Guest for this episode is Miss Joy Hall. She is a native of Baltimore, Maryland educated in the Baltimore County and Baltimore City public school systems. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University) in 2000and her Masters of Science Degree in Communications from Stevenson University in December of 2018. Ms. Hall is currently the Visitor and Volunteer Services Coordinator at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History where she has worked since 2005 having moved from Visitor Services Associate and Group Reservationist. Ms. Hall oversees the visitor experience, coordinates tours, and trains volunteers and docents Ms. Hall volunteers with the Greater Baltimore Urban League Guild as the Correspondence Secretary and as a Mentor with YearUp. She is also a senior member of the newly founded ReLiving with CP Team which aims to prepare young adults with Cerebral Palsy for independent living, served as the 1989 National Easter Seals Poster Child, and was the first African American to represent Easter Seals.     The focus of this season is Living the Word through Physical Challenges. There are millions of people on this earth who are overcomers of physical challenges, whether they be due to birth defects or accidents. In each of the interviews you will hear this season, you will be inspired to push through your own physical challenges, but also to empathize with others through their physical challenges. You will be encouraged to live your life to the fullest, bloom where you are planted and in whatever condition you are planted and join the cause to make churches and other facilities more accessible to the physically impaired. My guest today is Miss Rochelle Harrod. Miss Harrod is a native Washingtonian. At the age of one, she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus. She holds a Masters Degree in Counseling and Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Trinity Washington University. Rochelle never allowed her disability to hinder her personal, career, or educational goals. In her spare time, she loves to sell Avon, Paparazzi Jewelry, and Partylite Candles. She is a former Ms. Wheelchair DC, who is very passionate about showing individuals how to navigate the system and get the services they need. For the last 11 years, as a Prince Georgian she has served as an Independent Living Specialist for the Residents of Prince George's County at Independence Now. Rochelle is also an advocate in her community. She serves on the board of Just 4 Us Foundation, which is a non-profit that provides community enrichment activities for at risk youth and individuals with special needs in DC and Prince George's County.
