Brother Alberto, a devout member of the Community of Francis and Claire, clinical psychologist, and director of campus ministry at Saint Xavier University, shares his profound journey back to his deepened roots in Christianity after practicing Gaudiya Vaishnavism for nearly two decades. In a unique and enriching dialogue, Swami Padmanabha and Brother Alberto delve into an exploration of practical and theological mystical Christianity and Gaudiya Vaishnavism, and discover a richer, more interconnected understanding of these profound spiritual paths. Stepping into the perspective of each other's traditions, they (and we) are able to look back at their own with a more nuanced and richer vision. Some of the threads of this rich conversational tapestry are:•What is the relationship between the certainty of religion and the mystery of God•What would faith look like if it was grounded in belovedness?•How do shame and feelings of unworthiness impact our approach to our practice and our relationship with God?•What is the relationship between mystical spirituality and institutional religion and how do them impact each other•The practice of presence in mystical traditions—God's omnipresence and our own omniabsence•The influx of grace.•What is the ultimate relationship with God for which they each aspire.•How nonduality leads to unified diversity. If you've ever thought about leaving the school systems, you may have wondered what options you have as far as jobs go.Maybe you feel burnt out, or maybe you just want a change and don't want to walk away from education completely. I understand this dilemma on a deep level, so that's why I invited Aimee Davis to the De Facto Leaders podcast to talk about how she used her teaching and improv skills to find a fulfilling job outside the school systems.  Aimee Davis is the Senior Director of the Learning Center at the Field Museum in Chicago. Aimee Davis spent 10 years as a middle school social studies, reading, and language arts teacher before leaving the classroom in 2013 to pursue a career in informal science education. At the Museum of Science and Industry, she developed a suite of inquiry-based floor programs and trained teams of facilitators to deliver daily science programming. She joined The Field Museum in 2015 as the Volunteer and Public Learning Experiences Administrator. In this role, Aimee managed the Grainger Science Hub and associated cart programming, the Discovery Squad and Crown Family PlayLab adult volunteers, and the Teen Volunteer program. In 2019, Aimee became the Director of the Learning Center and in 2022, the Senior Director. In this role Aimee oversees the six divisions in the Field's Learning Center which include the museum's offerings for teachers, students, families, community groups, teens, and every day visitors. Aimee trained and taught at The Second City, has a Non-profit Leadership Certificate from Northwestern Kellogg, a M.A. in Education Administration from Saint Xavier University and a B.S. in Elementary Education from Illinois State University. In this episode, we talk about:✅How to find a job that aligns with your passion and skills outside the school systems.✅How learning improv can make you a better teacher, leader, and communicator (even if you're not in to theater).✅How museums are leveraging youth programs to enhance real-world, hands-on learning and embracing the benefits of technology. You can connect with Aimee on LinkedIn here, and find more information about the Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois here. Be sure to check out the BE podcast network for educators and aspiring leaders. My guest today is Mark Scott Rosenbaum, Ph.D., Dean, College of Business, Hawaii Pacific University. Previously, he was dean and professor of marketing with the Graham School of Management at Saint Xavier University in Chicago. Prior to his leadership at St. Xavier Rosenbaum was chair and professor of the Department of Retailing at the University of South Carolina, the Kohl's Professor of Marketing at Northern Illinois University, and an assistant professor in the Department of Marketing at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. Dr. Rosenbaum is a three-time Fulbright Scholar. Dr. Rosenbaum serves as co-editor of the Journal of Services Marketing, an associate editor for the Journal of Business Research. We discuss how digital technologies, including mobile applications, social media, and online games, have impacted the ways that people communicate, learn, play, date, and entertain themselves. Although digital technologies offer their users many benefits, these technologies also expose their users to risks. Indeed, many digital users have been victims of cyberbullying, identity theft, and data breaches. We have apps like Tinder, and in the gay community, there's Grindr. If you're a member of the gay community, you can now meet people right next to you. You're no longer this isolated member of a community. That's a great positive. However, what you don't hear much is how many men are raped with Grindr hookups.Further, some national governments and local jurisdictions use digital technologies, to curtail their citizens' freedoms, and to enforce laws that criminalize private, consensual, same-sex sexual activity and anything else that particular government is opposed to.We are fostering internet addictions, we don't realize that digital technologies have a dark side. Numerous studies show that as youth spend more than two hours a day on social media, their depression levels increase. Now, this would almost seem the converse of what reality should be. Because reality means, I'm connected to these networks of friends, I have friends available 24/7/365. This should elevate my self-esteem. I know exactly where everyone is. And yet, young people feel increasingly alone and unhappy. To my question, “What's the most important thing you have learned so far in your life?” Mark answered that regardless of how tough the beginning is, you have to have a beginning. Take the risk, the challenge, and begin.Next week my guest will be Dr Stephanie Alice Baker,  Senior Lecturer in Sociology, City, University of London. Dr Baker's research explores how we connect and communicate online, particularly around issues pertaining to health and wellness. Dr Baker studies influencer culture and the spread of medical misinformation in the context of COVID-19 and the anti-vaccination movement. About the Book Born and raised in rural Mississippi and the even balmier climes of central Florida, Red Barber, at the age of thirty-two, became one of New York City's most influential citizens as the play-by-play announcer for the Brooklyn Dodgers. When he arrived in 1939, Barber brought the down-home drawl and idioms of his southern roots to the borough, where residents said they could walk down any street and never miss a pitch because his voice wafted out of every window and every passing car. From his colorful expressions like “rhubarb” and “sitting in the catbird seat” to his vivid use of similes—a close game was “tighter than a new pair of shoes on a rainy day”—Barber's influence on his contemporaries and the many generations of broadcasters who followed him cannot be overstated. But behind all the base hits, balls, and strikes lies a compelling story that dramatizes the shifting expectations and roles of a public figure—the sports broadcaster—as he adapted to complex cultural changes throughout the course of twentieth-century American life. Author Bio Judith R. Hiltner is professor emeritus of literature and languages at Saint Xavier University and the author of books and articles on American literature and culture, including critical and biographical studies of Herman Melville, Philip Freneau, and Deborah Sampson. James R. Walker is professor emeritus of communication at Saint Xavier University and a past executive director of the International Association of Communication and Sport. He is the author of several books, including Crack of the Bat: A History of Baseball on the Radio (Nebraska, 2015), and is the coauthor of Center Field Shot: A History of Baseball on Television (Nebraska, 2008). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

“Some folks say white people have no business being in this work. But, you know, we have to be, and it's a job that you want to work yourself out of.”   In this episode, Ralph Newell is joined by Dr. Jacqueline Battalora, author of Birth of a White Nation: The Invention of White People and Its Relevance Today.   Battalora is an attorney and professor of sociology at Saint Xavier University in Chicago.   Tune in as they discuss “whiteness,” the taboo of privilege, and the importance of understanding the truth of our history as well as the distressing implications the overturning of Roe v. Wade may have on our constitutional rights around race.   KEY POINTS: - Dr. Jacqueline Battalora's journey to diversity, equity, and inclusion work - What does the term “whiteness” really mean? - Why are white people considered the norm? - How was whiteness invented and why does it matter today? - White replacement theory and DEI education - What does it mean to be an ally?   QUOTABLES: “I think we have to be really clear about what we mean by whiteness. Malcolm X referred to whiteness not as a complexion, but as a state of consciousness.” “White people really are just submerged as the norm. So I become the norm against which all other racial groups are measured against and considered in relation to.” “Let me address one thing that I often hear, which is the whole ‘preaching to the choir'. I don't know of any choir that doesn't need daily practice.”   GUEST RESOURCES: Learn more about Jacqueline Battalora: https://www.speakoutnow.org/speaker/jacqueline-battalora   PRODUCTS / RESOURCES: Watch this video and others on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/user/Diversediversedivers Visit the Diverse: Issues In Higher Education website: diverseeducation.com Or follow us on social media: Twitter: twitter.com/diverseissues Instagram: instagram.com/diverseissuesinhighereducation Facebook: facebook.com/DiverseIssuesInHigherEducation/ Linkedin: linkedin.com/company/diverse-issues-in-higher-education Transcription services are available upon request. Having a sponsor at work has been a key tool for many leaders to skyrocket in their careers. However, sponsor relationships remain elusive for many Black women leaders due to a lack of access to senior leaders and low visibility in their organizations amongst other causes.   In this episode, our special guest, Faith Eatman, discusses her experience with spearheading a sponsorship program specifically for Black women at her organization. We take a behind-the-scenes look at Faith's innovative approach to creating a program that addresses both the access issues and the systemic barriers within her organization--all while centering the experience of Black women. Faith educates us on the four A's of a sponsor's role, provides tips for Black women looking to secure a sponsor, and shares her process for getting buy-in for her program from C-suite leaders in her organization (Hint: it's a process that can be used to get buy-in on ANY of your projects).   Overall, Faith gives us a refreshing view of sponsorship programs, as she highlights that it provides a benefit for all parties involved.
