Words Have Power to Bless or to WoundJames 1:19 “You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger.”This verse really hit home with me this morning.  It was the subject of the daily devotional I am reading, “Jesus Calling.”  Actually, it wasn't even today's message.  I am behind because I was on vacation and I wasn't doing my normal morning routine.  This morning I got up and decided I would do two devotionals so I can try to catch up to where I should be.  This book is so good.  I always really enjoy the devotionals.  The reason I say this morning's devotional hit home for me is that I know how important words can be, and I know how much what we can say can hurt others.  I just got back from a family vacation with my husband, all three of our boys, and my husband's whole family, his mom and dad, his brother and his wife, and their two girls.  This is one of our favorite times of the year.  It is so nice to get to spend a whole week with family.  We get to hang out and talk.  We get to play lots of games, especially with his mom and dad.  My youngest two boys love to play with their two girls.  They play all different board games and card games.  It is music to my ears to hear them talking and laughing.  The place we go to is a campground in Maine.  We stay in a cabin with no internet.  There is internet at the lodge, which is open 8-7, but not in our cabins.  There is a TV, but it doesn't have cable; you can just watch movies on it. I love this because it means we have so much more time to talk and to visit.  However, as you can imagine, my kids do not love this.  Two of them really enjoy playing games with their cousins, playing chess with their Pop (Tony's dad), and playing Parcheesi with both Tony's parents.  They also really enjoy it when we rent a boat and they get to go out in the boat and go fishing, or when we pull them behind the boat on a boogie board.  However, that still leaves a lot of time when they are bored.  They do not enjoy the fact that there is no Wifi.  They miss talking with their friends on the computer and playing video games with their friends.  Also, this year was super hot, and the cabins are not air-conditioned.  Since our house is air-conditioned, they are not used to sleeping in such hot temperatures.  Some parts of the trip were difficult for them.Our oldest really did not enjoy the vacation. He really liked spending time talking with Tony's brother, and he got to play chess with Pop a few times, but most of the time, he was unhappy.  I did go out and get him a fan at one point, and he was much more comfortable after that, but he still was very unhappy.  He is the reason this verse hit home today.  When he is unhappy or angry, he says things he doesn't mean.  He is really struggling right now, and being away from his friends and his work for a week was more than he could take.  Each day, at least once a day, he would start to say very unkind things.  Not because he really thinks those things were true, but because he was upset, and that is how he acts when he is upset.  I don't know why he does this.  It is not something new; he has done this ever since he was little.  In the moment, when he is angry, he does not care what he is saying or who he is hurting.  However, afterwards, he feels really bad about it.  I wish he could hear this verse and adopt this principle.  I am going to write it on a sticky note for him, because I know he doesn't want to do this.  He doesn't want to feel this way; he doesn't want to say unkind things and then feel bad about it later.  He needs help learning to control what he says, and it is not human help he needs.  He needs the Lord's help.  I know my son is not the only one who says things they don't mean when they are angry.  We have all done this before.  I thought I would read you the devotional I read this morning because it really explains this verse well and how important it is to watch our words.  “Watch your words diligently. Words have such great power to bless or to wound. When you speak carelessly or negatively, you damage others as well as yourself. This ability to verbalize is an awesome privilege, granted only to those I created in my image. You need help in wielding this mighty power responsibly.  Though the world applauds quick-witted retorts, my instructions about communication are quite different: “be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.” Ask my spirit to help you whenever you speak. I have trained you to pray – "Help me, Holy Spirit" – before answering the phone, and you have seen the benefits of this discipline.  Simply apply the same discipline to communicating with people around you. If they are silent, pray before speaking to them. If they are talking, pray before responding. These are split-second prayers, but they put you in touch with my presence. In this way, your speaking comes under the control of my spirit. As positive speech patterns replace your negative ones, the increase in your joy will amaze you.”I love the advice in this short devotional.  Imagine how much different our interactions would be if we all paused before replying and said, “Help me, Holy Spirit.”  Also, if you need to start a conversation with someone, you just quickly pause and say, “Help me, Holy Spirit.”  The Holy Spirit is within us.  He is waiting for us to ask Him to help us.  What if we got into the habit of doing that more often?  I wonder how different our days would be?  I wonder how much smoother our conversations would be?  I love how it says, “In this way, you're speaking comes under the control of my Spirit.”  Wouldn't you love that?  I know I would.  I would love it if everything that came out of my mouth was under the control of the Holy Spirit.  I know I say the wrong things sometimes.  I have gotten so much better than I was because I have spent a lot of hard work and time learning to say the right things and to say kind things.  And yet, I still mess up, I still say the wrong things.  I wish I had heard this before or thought of this before.  I have prayed things like, “Lord, guard my mouth.”  However, I never thought to say a quick half-second prayer every time I open my mouth.  This sounds like it could be a great way to become better at my interactions with others.  The other thing I wanted to quickly touch on, because it really touched me this morning, was the last three words, “slow to anger.”  This touched me because sometimes I can be quick to anger.  Sometimes I can take offense at small things.  Sometimes I can get upset over things that weren't intentional or weren't really a big deal.  I know I can't be the only person who does this.  When I read them, it was as if the Holy Spirit shone a light on my actions.  It was as if He was gently reminding me God wants us to be slow to anger.  God doesn't want us to take things so personally.  He doesn't want us to walk around taking offense and getting angry at everything we encounter.  He wants us to be slow to anger.  Is that you?  Are you slow to anger, or are you quick to anger?  If we are quick to anger, it doesn't mean we are bad.  It just means we need to ask God for help.  We need to ask Him to show us how to be slow to anger. It means we need to invite the Holy Spirit into more of our interactions.  Maybe each morning when we get up, we can hand our day over to the Holy Spirit.  Maybe we could say a quick prayer like, “Holy Spirit, come into all my interactions today.  Help me be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. I give you permission to take control.”  That would take not more than a second or two, and yet you are inviting the Holy Spirit into your daily interactions.  You are handing over control to the Holy Spirit.  I bet we would find this practice very powerful.  Let's start now.  “Holy Spirit, come into all my interactions today.  Help me be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. You've heard about placebo's? Well what about nocebos? The Age of Diagnosis: How Our Obsession with Medical Labels Is Making Us Sicker By: Suzanne O'Sullivan Published: 2025 320 Pages Briefly, what is this book about? The idea that putting labels on something is not a free lunch—like everything else there are tradeoffs. Rather than framing numerous illnesses as being psychosomatic, O'Sullivan seems more to be suggesting that humans are very suggestible. (I get the meta-ness of the statement.) As such, once you generate a label it has a tendency to warp identities, and make people seek out confirming evidence. This all creates a sort of nocebo effect which may increase the severity of whatever symptoms they're experiencing.  To put it more succinctly, labels have power and we should be circumspect about applying them. What's the author's angle? O'Sullivan is a neurologist who noticed that lots of patients have "normal" tests, but are also indisputably suffering. As someone more focused on the brain than other parts of the body, she has long contended that expectations, culture, current fads, etc. play a much bigger role than most doctors want to admit. It's not all about biology, psychology also has a role. Previous books include It's All in Your Head: True Stories of Imaginary Illness and The Sleeping Beauties: And Other Stories of Mystery Illness.  Who should read this book? Anyone interested in a broader discussion of how the world outside of medicine interacts with the world of medicine. How the epistemic crisis, culture, disease advocacy groups, bureaucracy, and patient longing all affect the act of putting a label on a cluster of symptoms. What does the book have to say about the future?

In this insightful teaching, Peggy Joyce Ruth reveals the tremendous spiritual authority contained in the words we speak. Drawing from Scripture, she explains that our tongues can either release life or invite destruction, echoing Proverbs 18:21: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Every word we speak—positive or negative, faith-filled or fearful—sets things in motion in the spiritual realm. Ruth encourages believers to use their words as instruments of faith, declaring God's promises instead of rehearsing problems. Words have the power to move, motivate, inspire, frighten, and cheer. What you say and how you say it can have a profound impact on another person. And some words, called power words, have more impact than others. These words have a strong meaning which is likely to trigger a psychological or emotional response. They are persuasive, pushing people to take action. Power words fall in to one of three categories: seductive, emotional, or sensory (visual). As you write web copy, email communication, and social media status updates, employing these powerful phrases will help you grab and hold the attention of a reader. Seductive Power Words These terms have the ability to “seduce” readers, overriding logical reasoning and compelling them to take action. Examples of seductive words include: New – People often equate new with better. When you offer something new, they assume it is better than what they already have. Free – We are conditioned to respond to the word “free.” That promise reduces the resistance to action. Because – Simply giving people a reason is all they need to give you a try. How To – This is a common search phrase for almost every product category. The phrase “how to” promises practical information. If you use it, be sure your content delivers on the promise. Emotional Power Words Tapping into human emotions with your headlines is more challenging. There isn't a short list of emotional words that always works. Instead you need to consider the emotions themselves and find ways to tap into them. Common emotions which will drive action include fear, jealousy, curiosity, joy, surprise, anger, disgust, trust, and anticipation. Not all emotions will work the same way. For example, anger may cause someone to share something on social media, but not purchase a product or a service. In contrast, fear or jealousy may drive someone to take action and buy. Some studies indicate people are more likely to take action to avoid negative outcomes than to achieve positive ones. Example: What do your competitors know that you don't? That question is designed to elicit fear from the reader. Sensory Power Words Sensory words paint a picture in the mind of the reader. These descriptive words are designed to activate one or more of the senses. They describe how we experience the world: how we smell, see, hear, feel, or taste something. Engage the eyes with words related to colors, shape, or appearance. For instance: gloomy, dazzling, bright, foggy, or gigantic. Make something tangible when you describe textures. These same words can be applied to feelings and abstract concepts also such as gritty, creepy, slimy, fluffy, or sticky. When you read words like cha-ching, kaboom, or pow, you can almost hear the sounds. Other descriptive words such as crashing, pounding, or ringing will engage the reader's auditory sense. Especially helpful if you are writing about food, words related to taste and smell may get your prospective reader salivating for your product. Many of these words like zesty, tantalizing, sweet, stinky, or stale will transform bland copy. Remember that motion is sensory, too. Active words such as vibrating, soaring, mind-boggling, staggering, or bumpy take the reader on a journey with you

Words have a lot of power. We sometimes like to believe that actions or physical behavior can carry consequences, and they do, but words should be seen in the same light. Toxic words over time have an effect and can change our brain chemistry or belief system to believe in these false truths. Words have the power to corrode our sense of self. If you're exposed to verbal abuse, people can 100% believe them as true overtime.    If you're around people who use words to deem you or belittle you, it's best to remove yourself from them. This is easier said than done. What do you do if you have people in your life that are close to you and are doing this to you? Their negativity will spread into your psyche. It's important to note that we don't have control over what people say to us, but we do have the capacity to check in with ourselves and ask ‘is that true?'. When we hear something toxic, this is the perfect opportunity to strengthen your sense of self and double down on who you are as a person, character, and individual with values.    People often talk about the importance of forgiveness, and while forgiveness can be a good thing, it's important you process your emotions on the matter at hand first. Trauma or abuse victims can be almost too quick to forgive as a survival technique, and it ends up putting them in positions for more verbal abuse. I made a mistake with a client when I was supporting them to create messaging that, on one hand, was embarrassing, but on the other, really made me stop and think. And I realized: in this moment, I had chosen “effective marketing” over being values-led in the way that I speak. (I share what that mistake was in todays' episode of The Sustainable Success Podcast - Episode 015: Our words have POWER + that's why I won't use these in my marketing.) Since then I've taken a good hard look at the language I use in my messaging and marketing, and asked myself time and time again: does this contribute to the world I wish to contribute to? The answer: a LOT of the language that's so normalized in this online business industry—and that I, too have previously used—is absolutely NOT contributing to the world I wish to contribute to. And so I've made some decisions about words/phrases that I will not use in my marketing. I share 8 of those words/phrases in this episode as well as my reasoning for not using them (+ 3 bonus words/phrases that I'm still exploring) — not in an effort to shame anyone who IS using them, but as an invitation for YOU to explore the words you're using in your marketing. And really, as an invitation for you to ask: is this language contributing to the world I wish to contribute to? The language that's really normalized in this online business industry has, in many ways, created the culture that so many of us…how do I say this nicely?…hate.
