Grace Yang is a motion graphics intern at the VA DME Internship where she creates videos about recent news, #VeteranOfTheDay posts and other graphic design projects. Grace graduated from the University of Maryland in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in marketing, criminal justice and criminology and is currently pursuing a certificate in video production from Montgomery College. Grace also works part-time at the Chinese Culture and Community Service Center where she maintains the website and helps create videos and graphics. Grace discovered video making through a creative writing class in high school. She liked the idea of going out and spending time creating videos that brought stories to the screen. While searching for the right internship for her, Grace saw the motion graphics intern position at the VA and applied for that position as her first pick and two others through the Virtual Student Federal Service (VSFS). For her work as a motion graphics intern, Grace's experience in marketing and criminal justice helps her to apply different concepts and soft skills that she gained from her college classes to the motion graphics projects that she helps design and create for the VA. One of the projects that stands out to Grace the most is the video timeline she did of Chuck Yeager that she is proud to have worked on. Another thing that Grace mentions is how time management helps her to balance her busy day spent between classes, the internship and her job.

Phong shared such an interesting story with me about his childhood of growing up in Vietnam with his Chinese family, his experiences with immigration and assimilation, and his new puppy he got during COVID times - I promise it all will make sense. Our conversation led me to highlight the similarities I find between international cultural assimilation and cultural assimilation that takes place right here in our own communities, how language can be used to create barriers, and the connection between language and thought/culture.  While lots of the topics I address on this podcast may be deemed controversial, please remember, there is no controversy in one's own experiences. Phong BanhPhong Banh is the Director of IT at Montgomery College in Maryland and also serves as an adjunct faculty member teaching computer science. Before he was born, his parents fled China in and settled in Vietnam where they had 10 children. Banh, the youngest, recalls leaving Vietnam to go to a refugee holding center in the Philippines before arriving to the United States at the age of 10, speaking minimal English. He provides an interesting perspective on language acquisition based on his personal experience with immigration and growing up in a cross-cultural and multi-generational Chinese family in the US.Music for this episode is Like Honey by Dr. Delight provided by soundstripe.com.Cover artwork and design by Katrina Langland and Eloise Stewart.***************************Here are some interesting resources to check out that highlight cultural assimilation at home:Language, Culture and Assimilation Assimilation and Language Finally, an article on how much does our language determine behaviorDON'T FORGET TO...Join the HoneyBee Connection Facebook page for more information and news about language, culture, and communication. Have you ever felt like you had a desire and the ability to do something that you were never afforded the opportunity to? Many people with “different abilities” never get the opportunity to share them because of assumptions made about what they can and can't do. As a society, we are missing out on so many gifts and treasures because of our lack of empathy and willingness to be patient with those who may need to do things differently than many of us. Whether we are defined as physically challenged or people with a disability, we have gifts to share that can benefit humanity. Today I want to welcome Miss Emily Rowe and Mr. Ryan Ward. Miss Rowe is a 2020 graduate of Kennedy Krieger High School who has always been interested in Hospitality. Emily is now pursuing her interest in the Food and Beverage Management program at Montgomery College. As an ex-preemie and a twin, Emily knows the challenges faced by those with Cerebral Palsy and multiple disabilities. She believes that trying one's best Have you ever felt like you had a desire and the ability to do something that you were never afforded the opportunity to?
