This episode we're bringing attention to an important but still under-examined subject: the need for  schools and school systems to better attend to the intersection of language and disability for young multilingual learners.  Focusing on multilingualism and disability offers insight into a larger and more persistent question we've dug into throughout this series—that is, how can district leaders, including superintendents and school business officials, make decisions and take actions that more effectively identify and meet the needs of all their students?Host Jason Willis is joined by two WestEd colleagues, Jamey Burho and Elizabeth Burr. Both  have worked extensively on policies and practices that support the needs of multilingual learners, particularly those with disabilities. In the past couple of years, Jamey and Elizabeth have co-authored key studies, including a 2022 report, “Resourcing Supports for Young Multilingual Learners with Suspected Disabilities in California,” and in Dec. 2023,  "Pre-Referral Processes in California State Preschool Programs: How Practitioners Decide to Refer Multilingual Children for Special Education Evaluation" along with Alyssa Perez.More About Our Guests As a Senior Research Associate on the Research-Practice Partnerships team at WestEd, Elizabeth Burr coordinates research projects, including policy analyses, literature reviews, and syntheses with the Regional Educational Laboratory West.  She authored Guidance Manuals for Educators of English Learners with Disabilities: Ideas and Lessons from the Field, and was a lead author of California Practitioners' Guide for Educating English Learners with Disabilities. Currently she is working on a comprehensive toolkit for educators of English learners with disabilities. Prior to joining WestEd in 2007, Elizabeth was a Project Director at the John W. Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities at Stanford University, and a Project Director at Policy Analysis for California Education.Jamey Burho is a Senior Research Associate with the English Learners Services and Migrant Education (ELMES) team and the Special Education Policy & Practice (SEPP) team at WestEd. Her expertise focuses on students identified as English Learners with disabilities, or dually identified students.   As part of WestEd's Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) program, Jamey routinely leads professional development sessions across the country for educators on how to support multilingual students. Prior to joining WestEd, Burho was a postdoctoral fellow at Oregon State University. She began her education career in Washington, D.C. as a special education teacher. She holds a BS in international relations from Georgetown University, an MA in teaching (special education) from Trinity Washington University, and a Ph.D. in special education from University of Maryland.Jason Willis serves as  Director of Strategic Resource Planning and Implementation for WestEd, and he is a former chief business official in several California school districts.Budgeting for Educational Equity is presented by CASBO and WestEd.  The series is written and produced by Paul Richman and Jason Willis. Bold. Fearless. Truth Teller. Visionary. Compassionate. These are just a few of the words used to describe Trinity Washington University's president Patricia McGuire. As president since 1989, Pat McGuire is largely credited with successfully transitioning the institution from one that primarily served elites and was on the verge of collapse to one that today primarily caters to a predominantly Black and Latina female student body, One of the longest serving college presidents in America, McGuire has used her position and her bold, fearless voice, to help elevate the needs of her students as a priority, recently using federal pandemic rescue funds to clear their tuition and cover transportation, books and child care needs, earning her and TWU considerable national attention. In this episode of IngenioUs, President McGuire speaks candidly about how she led the transformation of Trinity, the leadership principles that she has learned, and advice she has for other leaders, as they're looking to lead their organizations through transformation and why she believes women's colleges are more important than ever. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chelip/message

The saying goes that history repeats itself. True to form, epidemics have been a near-constant feature in human life. Up until the 1960s, recurring epidemics were simply a normal fact of daily life, always lurking in the background. Joining us today is award-winning historian Allen Pietrobon, an assistant professor of global affairs at Trinity Washington University.  We will be talking to Dr. Pietrobon about some of the lesser-known pandemics and epidemics, revealing how people throughout history dealt with such sudden disease outbreaks. We'll learn from Dr. Pietrobon where these epidemics and pandemics originated. Whom did they most affect? What was learned in how to treat or prevent them? And how did societies evolve in the wake of deadly pandemics? Dr. Pietrobon explores the cholera epidemics that ravaged 19th-century New York City and the terrifying polio epidemic that first struck America in the 1840s and killed thousands during each generational recurrence. Please join me and Dr. Allen Pietrobon to discover how epidemics indiscriminately affected lives, killing presidents and paupers alike; and learn about the medical and technological advancements that have helped people to continue living, post-pandemic. It was that first moment in our history when we saw that television can transform a political candidate … into a celebrity, and it changed the whole contours of our politics.” That is how one historian described the debate that helped John F. Kennedy become president in 1960. Historian Allen Pietrobon takes us back to the Eisenhower era, a time before the “celebrity president.” He examines the lives and backgrounds of John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon and reveals how Kennedy's domination of the medium during the first-ever televised debate was key in his winning the presidency. The debate left Nixon so diminished, it would be 16 years before presidential candidates agreed to debate live on TV again. The Great American Road Trip - Allen Pietrobon Smithsonian Associates Artist Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #460. As part of our Smithsonian Associates, Art of Living Streaming Series, our guest today is historian, academic, Dr. Allen Pietrobon. Dr. Allen Pietrobon will be presenting via Zoom at the Smithsonian Associates Streaming program, Wednesday, July 8, 2020, and the title of his presentation, and the subject of our conversation today is The Great American Road Trip. Details are available on our site about Zoom. Just in time for the summer road trip season, Dr. Allen Pietrobon, an assistant professor of global Affairs at Trinity Washington University and an award-winning historian, takes us on a literary journey that explores the nature and impact of American travel stories. Perhaps no genre of story is so typically American than the travel story narrative. From chronicles of the settlement of the West to the modern cross-country road trip, travel story narratives have infused American history and popular culture. Many of these stories are written from the perspective of travelers who found themselves to be outsiders along the way. From Mark Twain's Life on the Mississippi to John Steinbeck's Travels With Charlie to Jack Kerouac's On The Road, in most of these stories, the protagonist is positioned as an explorer in a new and unfamiliar landscape (whether that be Jim Crow-era Alabama or the American West) on a journey of self-discovery to encounter the “real” America. What is so compelling about travel stories? What can they teach us about American history, culture, and society?  Dr. Allen Pietrobon will answer those questions and more during our interview. Dr. Allen Pietrobon is a historian and academic. Dr. Allen Pietrobon will be presenting via Zoom at the Smithsonian Associates program, Wednesday, July 8, 2020, and the title of his presentation is The Great American Road Trip. Patricia McGuire on growing Trinity Washington University ~ "We had to get on our feet as an enterprise. We had to get people knowing us, and so two years ago, when I went around looking to build a new science laboratories and nursing laboratories and classrooms, we were able to raise the money to build a new academic building because the sports center was successful. It's amazing how success breeds success." Patricia McGuire (right) and Andy Ockershausen (left) in studio interview A Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen, and this is Our Town. Our next guest was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and thank the Good Lord, she came to Our Town in 1970, liked it so much, she said, "I'm gonna stay here." And she's been called a transformer and a superwoman, and she deserves all the accolades. She's expanded academic programs, raised significant amounts of money, built an award-winning, $20,000,000 state of the art athletic center for women and girls, which I find is one of the real jewels of Our Town, and through her leadership as president of Trinity Washington University, they educate more D.C. public school graduates than any other private university in the city, and as a matter of fact, in the nation. I met Pat McGuire through the Greater Washington Board of Trade where she has a been stalwart member of the board for years, and then she received the Leader of the Year award in 2007. Pat, it's hard to believe that that's 10 years ago, but time goes so fast. But it's only part of her success. Welcome to Pat McGuire. Thank you for being on Our Town. Patricia McGuire: Oh, Andy thank you for having me on Our Town. This is a real treat. I think this show is so important. It should be required listening for all members of Congress so they can know what our town is really all about. Thank you. A Ockershausen: Well thank you for being on Our Town, and you don't realize how important you are, but we do because we sit back and look at what's going on in Our Town, and to see the impact you have made, and one of the first things I know about when you built that facility that's state of the art, and people photographed ... When we sent the camera crews out and did all that, it was a spectacular thing to do. I don't know if any of the men got anything that night. On Building Trinity Center for Women and Girls in Sports Patricia McGuire: Well that's nice of you to say, but you know, Trinity's history is so interesting because we never really had top of the line sports teams, but when I because president, and we were suffering. We were the only women's college left in the region, and we had to decide if we wanted to be a women's college still, if we wanted to exist still. And I said to the board, "If we're going to be a great women's college, we have to great women's sports because Title 9 requires it." A Ockershausen: To be competitive. Patricia McGuire: And be competitive. At first the board was like, "Eh. I don't know about that." And then, you might remember, the Board of Trade was working on the 2012 Olympics bid for DC. A Ockershausen: Absolutely. Right. Patricia McGuire: And I got mixed up with Board of Trade people working on that. I met the Women's Sport's Foundation, and I went back to the board and said, "You know what? That's right. We're not going to build a gym for five or ten girls. We're going to build the Trinity Center for Women and Girls in Sports and make it a destination venue around Women's Sports." And that was actually a legacy of the 2012 Olympics movements in D.C. That facility. A Ockershausen: It energized you. Did you tell the board it was going to cost $20,000,000? Patricia McGuire: I did. I did, and they were, by that point, they knew me well enough they weren't shocked. We raised a lot of money around the concept. A Ockershausen: Right You got to do it. Benefits of Building Trinity Center for Women and Girls in Sports Patricia McGuire: And we got about 40,
