As you begin to practice meditation, it's normal to want more space in your meditations to practice returning your focus to your chosen anchor (breath, body, sounds). Do you want more peace, contentment and joy but overwhelm, stress and distraction is in the way? Hey meditators! I am frequently asked, “How do I stop the noises in my head?”. The good news is that we all have an inner narrator who worries and makes lists and can be really negative! The even better news is we don't need to stop the chatter to quiet it down. All we need to do is treat it with kindness and give it space. Key Takeaways : When you notice thoughts during meditation, celebrate the fact that you noticed it! Go slowly - label the thought as “thought” and take a few seconds to focus on an anchor such as the experience of breathing. Thoughts are just experiences! With that perspective, see if you can notice the thought, give it some space and time to stop on its own, and gently return your awareness to the present moment. Do you want to live passionately but you're afraid to do the thing you LOVE to do/must do/were born to do? I was there too. I've worked for 6 companies in the last 13 years and for 10 years I've been moving closer and closer to doing what I LOVE full time. I found yoga because I needed a tool to manage my burnout from work. Over time, my wellness journey evolved from yoga to reiki energy healing to mindfulness meditation so I could learn to calm my racing thoughts and take better care of myself. "We teach what we need." Meditation worked wonders for me because it helped me focus on my wellbeing. In 2019 I knew that in order to make a positive impact in a BIG way, I needed to work in healthcare. Through dedication and hard work, I began managing wellness events, became a life coach, and worked for almost 3 years in hospitals supporting employee wellbeing. And here we are today! I'm just a human who didn't give up. I'm a person who has been on the other side of anxiety and exhaustion and hopelessness and I want to remind you that there are tools (like meditation) that can help reduce the brain fog, increase focus and help you accomplish your goals. I'm also here to announce that I am officially doing what I am most passionate about! As of August 2023, I am running my wellness company Liz Coaches full time!! After years teaching the benefits of taking a mindful pause, I'm going to take a one month pause from the podcast, my newsletter and social media to reset my mind and body as I prepare for this big transition. Some hints that you need to pause are irritation, stress, overwhelm, too much energy or too little energy. Once you acknowledge that a pause is needed, either take one round of breath or feel your feet on the floor or place a hand on your body and feel your aliveness. Visualizing is a GAME CHANGER!! I've heard about the benefits of visualizing for years, but what got me to DO it was when my coach described what is actually is! Visualizing my day first thing in the morning has increased my positivity, confidence and vitality. Over the past 6 months I keep hearing, "trust the process" from wise and successful people about my business, my career and my wellbeing. I'm starting to think they are all onto something. We tend to over effort and expect immediate results but good things take time. Meditation can and will change your life if you let it AND it takes time to see the rewards of patience, relaxation, focus and kindness. This week we use a meditation called open monitoring to increase creativity. Did you know...? Creativity can improve your social life and your work life, it improves mood and it's fun! The brain needs a chance to focus and a change to be open to new ideas and be creative. The brain generates creative ideas through divergent and convergent thinking. Divergent thinking is when you take a concept and think in new ways. convergent thinking where there is one answer and getting to it requires focus. One way to support creativity is open monitoring mediation where you start by focusing on your natural breath and then you open up to all experiences without preference and judgement. Here is the basics of the practice : Sit with eyes closed and allow whatever surfaces in your mind surface. Practice non-judgement by just watching and taking inventory. Open monitoring meditation reduces involvement in brain regions related to memory function. When you suppress memory, there are more possibilities of what could be. We are the least focused and most overwhelmed in human history. A racing mind is the 2nd most common barrier that keeps people from meditating. We just have too many thoughts! We don't have 1 million (which is the most common guess), but we DO have around 60,000 thoughts a day. YIKES! There is something you can do, and that's calm the body and meditate. I know what you're thinking. Loving kindness?! Eek! Studies confirm that by extending thoughts of safety, health and happiness to others makes us less of a jerk. Here we feel what comes with wishing well upon others and ....(here's the hard part) ourselves! We finish the mindfulness meditation by extending warmth to ourselves. Don't worry, it won't hurt you or make you weak. Life's a lot more pleasant when we are kind to ourself. Am I right?! In this meditation I make it easier to express compassion to ourselves when we experience difficulty. Welcome to my meditation 101 series (FYI these meditations are great for any level, especially beginners!) We are keeping it simple and focusing on the breath today. By choosing to place awareness on the breath we are training our brain to focus and calm. I recommend you listen to these meditations in the order they are posted and starting with breath, body, sounds and open awareness, however you choose your own adventure. I know you guys will love this meditation/visualization because it's a fun one. Imagine what the snow globe of your life looks like right now. Is it chaotic, is it falling calmly? Is it settled. You'll want to get seated in a comfy position to enjoy this one! I'm wishing you many settled moments in 2023.
It's common to get thrown around and attached to thoughts. But thoughts are not facts. This meditation give us a chance to be with thoughts without being owned by them. When our mind is as big as the sky, experiences (like thoughts or sounds) just come and go. Enjoy the peace and space that this meditation allows for. Thanks for practicing.
