This episode is for ADHD mums who feel like they're living inside a nervous system experiment. The kind where everything is technically ‘fine'… until the TV is on, someone's making mouth noises, a child is asking 400 questions, another one is humming, and your body is trying to exit the situation through the nearest wall.We talk a lot about overstimulation like it's a personal flaw. Like you should be calmer. More patient. Better regulated. But what if you're not failing at regulation… you're just carrying too much regulation load?In this conversation with Rachel Few, we get painfully practical about what actually helps when you're at the edge. Not in an ideal world. In a real ADHD household, with real kids, real noise, real time pressure, and real limits.WHAT WE COVER– Why overstimulation is not a single moment, but a build-up across days– The ‘therapy taxi' burnout cycle and how it dysregulates the whole family– Why regulation strategies fail when they become another to-do list– Nervous system mapping: learning your early warning signs before the snap– ‘Recipe building' for families: planning around needs, not just appointments– Why yelling and snapping usually starts earlier than you think– PDA-aware approaches: when direct help makes things worse– Side-step regulation tools that don't rely on compliance– Real-life resets (including the candle trick, which sounds unhinged until you try it)– Why acceptance is sometimes the missing strategy, not another techniqueTHIS EPISODE IS FOR YOU IF…– you feel overstimulated before 7am and then blame yourself for it– your household escalates fast and you don't know where it starts– you're carrying the clean-up after every meltdown (emotional or literal)– you're exhausted from scanning for hunger, sensory triggers, and ‘what could go wrong'– you're parenting a PDA-ish child and standard advice backfires– you keep thinking ‘once we get the right support, it will all be fine' and then it isn't– you want tools that actually work when you're already at your limitRELATED EPISODESSurviving the Mental Load of the School Yearhttps://adhdmums.com.au/podcast_episode/episode-63-surviving-the-mental-load-of-the-school-year/When You Can't Relax Even When It's Quiethttps://adhdmums.com.au/podcast_episode/why-adhd-mums-cant-relax/The ADHD Myth of ‘Just Try Harder' (Quick Reset)https://adhdmums.com.au/podcast_episode/episode-24-quick-reset-the-adhd-myth-of-just-try-harder/RESOURCES & REFERENCES– For more information on Rachel Few - see here-PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia) is mentioned in the episode– Maternal mental health research is referenced (mum's mental health as a key predictor for child wellbeing)LISTENER QUESTIONS & COMMUNITYSubmit a Listener Question (anonymous option)If there's something you want answered on the podcast, you can submit a question here — anonymously if you prefer.https://form.jotform.com/251238118486864Share Feedback or Topic RequestsHave a topic you'd like covered, or feedback you want to...

Feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or constantly "on" even when you're getting things done? The issue may not be how much you're doing, but how much input your nervous system is processing each day. On today's show, I break down the critical difference between being overworked and overstimulated, and explain why overstimulation is one of the most overlooked drivers of burnout, stress-related health issues, and stalled momentum. You'll learn how constant notifications, information overload, and nonstop problem-solving keep the nervous system locked in a chronic stress response. I also share practical strategies to reduce mental noise, regain clarity, and build real momentum by simplifying inputs, setting clear priorities, and focusing on one key area of life at a time. Ever have moments where everything feels like too much, emotionally, mentally, physically and you can't quite explain why? This episode is a soft place to land. This is a hybrid episode, part understanding, part grounding, designed to help you feel a little more steady when you're overwhelmed, emotionally raw, or just exhausted from holding it together. In this episode, we cover: What overstimulation really means (and why it's not a failure) Why emotions don't always need a story or explanation How to create a sense of safety before trying to calm your body Gentle grounding and nervous system resets you can do anywhere Reassuring your body without feeding anxiety or reassurance-seeking Letting your system settle in its own time You don't need to fix anything while listening to this. You don't need to feel better by the end. Just let this episode be a pause, a reminder that you're allowed to slow down, soften, and take the rest of the day gently. Save this one for the moments when everything feels like too much. A Parenting Resource for Children’s Behavior and Mental Health
Discover why so many kids are anxious, overstimulated, and burned out through a quantum biology lens with Dr. Catherine Clinton. Learn practical insights to support emotional regulation, guided by Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge, expert in Regulation First Parenting™ and childhood dysregulation. So many parents feel exhausted watching their children struggle with racing thoughts, sensory overload, and anxious feelings. You're not alone—kids today are navigating a world far more overstimulating than when we were growing up, and parental burnout is real.In this episode, I discuss with Dr. Katherine Clinton about small, actionable steps parents can take to improve emotional regulation, sleep, and overall mental health for their children and themselves. Why do so many kids feel burnt out and overwhelmed today? The modern world is relentless. Screens, schedules, and constant stimulation leave young people with 30 “tabs” open in their heads. Dr. Clinton explains that quantum biology—how energy from light, sound, and electromagnetic fields impacts our bodies—helps us understand why children are more anxious and struggling with mood, focus, and sleep.Takeaways:Children practice self-regulation naturally when they experience stillness and boredom—a step many mental health professionals say helps prevent racing thoughts and panic attacks.Daily physical activity outdoors supports neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, helping kids focus and feel calm. This also gives parents the chance to tend to their own needs, which is essential if you want to be a better parent.Feeling burnt out isn't a moral failing—it's a normal reaction to overstimulation.Parent example: A fifth grade student who played outside daily felt calmer and less irritable compared to peers who spent all their free time on screens. How can sleep and light affect children's emotional health?Sleep and circadian rhythm are foundational for regulating mood, immune function, and inflammation. When children get enough restorative sleep, it creates a sense of stability that supports their life at home, at school, and in relationships. Poor sleep can lead to depression or other challenges that are more than just a phase—they are not a normal part of healthy development.Morning sunlight exposure cues dopamine and serotonin, while evening red or infrared light supports mitochondrial function and restorative sleep. Overexposure to blue light at night can decrease melatonin by 90%, disrupting bedtime routines and creating racing thoughts at night.Tips:Go outside in natural light within 30 minutes of waking.Reduce overhead lights and screens before bed; consider blue light blocking glasses.Use warm, red-toned lights in the evening to cue relaxation.Parent example: Parents who swapped overhead lights for salt lamps and dimmed screens noticed children sleeping deeper and

In this episode, we unpack why you're not actually lazy your brain is just overwhelmed, overloaded, and constantly “on.” I talk about how nonstop screens, noise, and comparison are frying your nervous system, making it hard to focus, start tasks, or feel motivated, and why self blame is the last thing you need.
In today's episode, host Mandee Hamann sits down with Dr. Steven Klein (Caron Treatment Center), a physician-scientist specializing in addiction medicine and brain health, for a vital conversation every parent needs to hear.In a world of constant digital stimulation, many kids' brains are under relentless pressure—often without parents realizing what's really happening beneath the surface. Dr. Klein explains how chronic overstimulation affects the developing brain, why behavioral addictions like screens and gaming mirror substance addiction neurologically, and why “moderation” is often far more difficult than it sounds.Together, Mandee and Dr. Klein explore:What true brain health looks like from a medical perspectiveHow dopamine and reward pathways are impacted by constant stimulationWhy children and teens are especially vulnerable to addictionThe warning signs families shouldn't ignore—sleep disruption, emotional dysregulation, rising anxiety, and loss of interest in real lifeWhy this is not a failure of willpower or parenting—but a brain-based issueMost importantly, this episode offers hope. Dr. Klein shares how the brain can heal, what actually restores healthy regulation, and simple, practical steps families can take right now to reduce stimulation and support resilience, connection, and emotional well-being.If you're concerned about your child's screen use—or simply want to protect their brain in a hyper-stimulating culture—this conversation will equip you with clarity, confidence, and encouragement. Protecting the brain may be one of the greatest gifts a parent can give.Support the showDon't forget to subscribe, rate, and leave a review if you enjoy the episode. I'd love to hear from you - Send me a text message So many of us are feeling exhausted, anxious, overwhelmed, and uncertain about what's to come. We're carrying concerns about our health, our loved ones, our work, and the state of the world, all while trying to keep going and “cope” with day-to-day life.In this episode, we explore a powerful reframe: we are not broken, our nervous systems are overstimulated. When the nervous system is living in prolonged stress and survival mode, our perception narrows. Situations feel more intense than they truly are. We become more self-critical, more reactive, and more disconnected from clarity, compassion, and ease. This conversation is a gentle reminder that nothing has gone wrong. From a place of non-judgement and loving awareness, we can begin to observe our thoughts, emotions, and bodily responses, and from there, create real change. This episode invites you to step out of survival mode and remember that another way of being is available: one rooted in safety, presence, and inner calm.
The Founderz Lounge Episode #70 with Don Varady and Steve Bon.Don and Steve are back with another round of Business & Bullsh*t, where real entrepreneurs break down wins, screwups, and what actually moves the needle, without the corporate fluff. It starts with a simple observation. Protein is suddenly in everything. From Sweetgreen's 106-gram protein bowl to protein water showing up on shelves, Don and Steve question whether this trend is about fueling people or just another marketing arms race. How much is too much, and at what point does “healthy” turn into hype? From there, the conversation shifts to something just as widespread. Our growing inability to sit in silence. They dig into society's addiction to constant noise and stimulation, especially among younger generations, where background sound is always on and silence feels uncomfortable. In some cases, the absence of earbuds or white noise now triggers anxiety instead of calm. The episode wraps with sharp takes in the Founderz Hot Take and a fast-paced Founderz Fast Five, tying together food, focus, and what happens when everything in modern life gets pushed to the extreme.Timestamps:[00:00] Trailer[01:21] Founderz Roundup: Sweetgreen's protein bowl[03:37] Sound addiction[06:04] Random Bullshit[08:02] Gen Alpha[10:56] Founderz Hot Take[13:46] Founderz Fast FiveKey Takeaways: • “Humans in general are overstimulated, and they've just lost the ability to meditate.” ~Don Varady [05:18]• There was a study done where they were looking at what is basically an audio addiction. Hello You,When life feels heavy and the world feels like it's spinning out of control, this episode offers a place to pause. In this guided practice, Coach Che Marville invites you to slow down, return to your body, and reconnect with the steady presence of your breath. Drawing from both Buddhist teachings on dukkha (the reality of suffering) and the Christian understanding of suffering as transformative, this episode explores how awareness can soften pain—not by denying it, but by changing how we relate to it.This is not a conversation to listen to in the background. It's an invitation to stop, sit, breathe, and notice.Through gentle breathwork, body awareness, and visualization, you'll be guided to:Create distance from overwhelming thoughts and emotionsBecome an observer of your inner experience rather than trapped inside itCultivate compassion toward yourself in moments of grief, anxiety, or sadnessRemember that awareness is a form of self-knowledge and careThis practice is for anyone who feels:Overstimulated by the worldDisconnected from their bodyCaught in cycles of worry, grief, or emotional painIn need of a few quiet minutes to come back to themselvesYou don't need to fix anything. You don't need to be calm or positive. You only need to breathe. If this practice helped you slow down or feel more grounded, share it with someone you care about. Six months into our journey through the Yamas and Niyamas, we pause to reflect on what it really means to let go. Not just of our stuff, but of expectations, busyness, self-judgment, and the heaviness we carry inside. In this episode, we finish our exploration of Aparigraha (nonpossessiveness) and begin our inward turn into the Niyamas, starting with Saucha, the practice of purity. But purity here isn't about perfection, appearances, or having it all together. It's about lightening our load, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, so we can meet each moment with clarity, compassion, and presence.Join us as we talk about what it might look like to stop “planning ourselves” and instead love ourselves as we are. This is an invitation to slow down, to be present, and to become a safer place for ourselves and for others. If you're feeling weighed down, scattered, or quietly exhausted by trying to do it all right, this conversation offers a gentler way forward - one rooted in presence, peace, and learning to let joy linger.Show Notes:The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice by Deborah Adele
In this episode, I talk about how you lose presence through overstimulation, not because you're weak, but because you allow too much input into your life. Constant dopamine hits from phones, notifications, and social media pull your attention in every direction. Presence requires containment, but overstimulation makes your energy leak everywhere. I break down how manufactured stimulation trains you to chase feelings instead of control. If you want real presence, you have to cut the noise and stop feeding the overload. Show Notes: [02:48]#1 Stimulation hijacks your nervous system. [12:53]#2 Overstimulated people are emotionally porous. [15:43]#3 Overstimulated people are noisy communicators. What actually helps you stay organised when your mind feels busy, overstimulated, or all over the place? In this practical and compassionate episode, I'm sharing the real-life systems that genuinely help me stay organised, follow through, and feel less overwhelmed, without forcing myself into rigid routines or productivity pressure.I have ADHD (combined type), and over the years I've learned that organisation isn't about discipline or willpower. It's about reducing friction, externalising what your brain struggles to hold, and creating systems that work with your nervous system, not against it.In Part 1 of this series, we explore:How colour coding can reduce mental load and make organisation intuitiveWhy labels are one of the most underrated tools for clarity and follow-throughHow to do brain dumps that actually relieve overwhelm (instead of creating more)Habit stacking as a gentle, sustainable way to build new routinesUsing audio to make boring, low-stimulation tasks like cleaning and admin easier to startThis episode is not just for people with ADHD. It's for anyone who feels scattered, overstimulated, busy, or tired of trying to “fix” themselves in order to get things done.FREE HYPNOSISClaim Your Free Hypnosis Recording: "Crowned in Confidence"
It's a SOLO EPISODE!!! Imma just yap real quick, is that cool? This episode starts with something many women don't realize they need to hear:You're not lazy. And you're probably not unmotivated either. If you're listening to this podcast, there's a strong chance you care deeply about your health, your routines, and your goals. You want consistency. You want things to feel easier than they do right now.So if you've been telling yourself you're scattered, inconsistent, or “bad at follow-through,” pause for a moment. In this episode, we unpack why so many capable, driven women feel frozen, overwhelmed, and exhausted before they even start and why “trying harder” often makes things worse. In this episode, we cover:– Why motivation isn't the real problem for most women anymore– How chronic information intake quietly overwhelms the nervous system– The hidden mental cost of too many options, rules, and opinions– Why constant research and restarting kills momentum– How “trying harder” increases resistance instead of results– The relief that comes from subtracting instead of addingIf you've ever felt:“I know what to do, I just can't seem to do it.”“I feel overwhelmed before I even start.”“I keep consuming information but not executing.”“I'm frustrated with myself for not being consistent.”This episode is for you.Because what looks like laziness is often cognitive overload. What feels like lack of discipline is often a system that's overstimulated and exhausted. And clarity doesn't come from adding more.It comes from creating space. If you felt calmer just hearing this, that's not an accident.Simplicity is part of the solution. This is the exact lens I bring into my coaching work so not more effort or pressure, but fewer things competing for your attention so follow-through can emerge naturally. If this episode resonated, consider sharing it with a friend who's been hard on herself lately. And if you want to hear more conversations like this, don't forget to like, subscribe, and let me know what you want covered next. Thank you for being here.Stay Relentless.
Happy New Year! We ring in the new year with a twist off champagne disappointment and a commitment to embracing the struggle. We review our 2025 resolutions, celebrating a shocking victory involving the Goodyear Blimp while admitting defeat on our gym consistency, and set new, oddly specific goals for 2026. Erin also goes on a passionate rant about the "rage" of physical limitations during yoga and the stress of friends who refuse to sync their digital calendars. In sports news, we dig into the messy bankruptcy filing of Grand Slam Track, exposing the staggering amounts owed to athletes and media companies (including a $3 million marketing bill) and discussing the drama unfolding on Threads regarding undisclosed sponsorships. We also debate the purpose of those mysterious trash cans in drive-thru lines and share a childhood fear of stuffed animals. Finally, we determine the ultimate "worst sound when overstimulated" in our bracket segment—pitting shoe squeaks against loud dishes—and close with a high energy "No Bad News" story about a music teacher turning his kindergarten class into a techno rave.
What if the real reason we're overwhelmed isn't the volume of work we're facing — but the fact we've lost sight of what really matters? In this episode of Sticky From The Inside, Andy is joined by coach, author and founder of On The Up Consulting, Julia Wolfendale, to explore the rising tide of overwhelm affecting leaders, teams and everyday life. Julia has coached hundreds of leaders, and her book Five Ways to Focus feels more relevant than ever in a world that's always on, overstimulated, and full of competing demands. Together they unpack why overwhelm hits even the most capable people, how fear quietly drives busyness, and why we often underestimate our capacity while overestimating the workload ahead of us. Julia introduces her powerful Five Motivational Drivers: freedom, fulfilment, fellowship, finance and kudos; a simple lens that helps people understand what they're really seeking, and what they should prioritise next. If you're feeling stretched, stuck or fizzing with that nervous-system overload Julia describes, this conversation offers a calm, practical reset. Five ideas. Five drivers. And a way of getting life and leadership back on the up. ----more---- Key Takeaways Overwhelm is less about volume and more about clarity. People often know what needs doing but lack the focus to start. Overwhelm grows when we lose sight of our capacity and what truly matters. Fear quietly drives busyness and self-worth gets tied to doing. Julia highlights how fear-based behaviour makes people equate being busy with being valuable, trapping them in cycles of overwork. The Five Motivational Drivers help us re-centre our priorities. Freedom, fulfilment, fellowship, finance and kudos offer a simple way to understand what you're really seeking and why certain tasks feel heavy or draining. Time expands when we regain perspective and shrinks when overwhelmed. Julia's Five Time Frames tool (2 hours, 24 hours, week, month, 3 months) helps recalibrate our sense of time and focus on what's actually achievable. ----more---- Key Moments The key moments in this episode are: 1:10 – Setting the Scene: Why Overwhelm Is Everywhere Today 3:53 – Meet Julia Wolfendale & Her Mission to Tackle Overwhelm 5:18 – The Overstimulated, Always-On World We're Struggling to Navigate 8:28 – What Overwhelm Really Feels Like: Capacity, Volume & Nervous-System Load 11:39 – Fear, Busyness and the Self-Worth Trap 15:02 – Introducing the Five Motivational Drivers 20:59 – When Intentions Don't Match Behaviour: Freedom vs Control 24:23 – How Overwhelm Warps Our Sense of Time 27:29 – Scheduling Everything: A Practical Way to Regain Focus 29:03 – Ideas vs Actions: The Two-List Clarity Tool 33:00 – Momentum, Micro-Actions and the Power of Breaking Things Down 43:59 – Julia's Three Sticky Notes for Beating Overwhelm ----more---- Join The Conversation Find Andy Goram on LinkedIn here Listen to the Podcast on YouTube here Follow the Podcast on Instagram here Follow the Podcast on Twitter here Follow the Podcast on Facebook here Check out the Bizjuicer website here Get a free consultation with Andy here Check out the Bizjuicer blog here Download the podcast here ----more---- Useful Links Follow Julia Wolfendale on LinkedIn here Find the On The Up Consulting website here ----more---- Full Episode Transcript Get the full transcript of the episode here
Things keep piling up. And no matter how many times the promise is made to slow down, it never actually happens. Here's what nobody tells you: taking a break won't fix it if you don't know what's actually driving the overstimulation in the first place. You'll just come back from your week off and fall right back into the same patterns. This journaling session gets you to the root. Four prompts that'll help you figure out if you're even doing things you want to be doing, what staying overstimulated might be protecting you from, and what you'd actually do with your time if you had space to think. No fluff, just the questions that create real shifts.Journal through these prompts:What is overstimulating me right now?Are the things that overstimulate me things I want to be doing? Or did I adopt them from someone else's expectations?Even though I don't want to be overstimulated, I keep finding myself here. You keep telling yourself you'll rest after this project. After the busy season. After you get through this month. But here's what actually happens: you hit your breaking point, book a retreat or take a week off, feel temporarily better — and then you're right back where you started. Overstimulated. Exhausted. Running on fumes again. This episode pulls back the curtain on why we wait until we're desperate to prioritize ourselves, and why those big drastic measures (the retreats, the content courses, the "I'm taking next month off" declarations) aren't actually solving the problem. You'll walk away understanding what's really driving your overstimulation — and three practical ways to regulate your nervous system without needing to escape your life first.Key Takeaways:Why retreats should enhance your life, not be a lifeline to revive youThe question that reveals if you're actually prioritizing yourself (or just decision fatigued)How to stop the cycle of "I'll rest when..." and feel grounded in your actual everyday lifeThree tips to regulate your nervous system right now — no retreat requiredYou'll stop waiting for permission to feel calm. And you'll start trusting that you can feel less overstimulated without blowing up your schedule or booking a flight.Resources Mentioned:Free Calm Mind Blueprint: http://www.samanthapenkoff.com/calm-mind-podNewsletter: www.samanthapenkoff.com/promptsWork with me:90 min Breakthrough Intensives: We get to the root of what keeps you performing instead of enjoying. Overpowering Emotions Podcast: Helping Children and Teens Manage Big Feels
The holidays are supposed to be joyful—but for many families, they quietly amplify stress, overwhelm, and emotional reactivity. In this special crossover episode with Parents of the Year podcast, Dr. Caroline and her husband Andrew step away from “perfect holiday” pressure and take a psychologically grounded look at why emotions run hotter during the holidays, for both kids and adults. We explore how disrupted routines, sensory overload, social comparison, family dynamics, and unrealistic expectations tax the nervous system—and why emotional meltdowns, irritability, withdrawal, or disappointment are not signs of failure, but signals of dysregulation. This episode bridges emotion regulation science with real-life parenting moments, including:· Why overstimulation is often behind kids' holiday meltdowns· How social media comparison fuels anxiety and emotional exhaustion· The role of structure, predictability, and proactive planning in regulation· Why parents' emotional regulation sets the ceiling for their children's· How to identify non-negotiables, let go of the rest, and reduce emotional load· Practical strategies for creating “magical moments” without emotional burnoutRather than trying to make emotions disappear, this conversation focuses on helping families anticipate emotional needs, regulate proactively, and respond with intention instead of reactivity.Want to learn more about boosting resilience during the holidays? Check out these episodes:Holiday Stress? Here's How to Build Real Resilience (https://youtu.be/jXgq7dn-hR4)How can we nurture kids' emotional resilience during the holidays? (https://youtu.be/jXgq7dn-hR4)Homework IdeasDo a “Holiday Load” Scan (5 minutes)Goal: Reduce dysregulation by identifying what's actually taxing the nervous system.Do: Write down the top 3 things that reliably spike stress for your child/teen (e.g., crowds, late nights, lots of visits, too many transitions) and the top 3 that spike stress for you.Use it: Pick one lever to change this week (sleep, pacing, fewer events, quieter mornings, etc.).Resource: A simple “HALT” check (Hungry, Angry/Anxious, Lonely, Tired) + add S for Sensory.Choose 2 Non-Negotiables + 2 FlexiblesGoal: Lower conflict and decision fatigue; clarify boundaries ahead of time.Do:Non-negotiables (examples): “We don't do three houses in one day,” “We eat before we go,” “We leave by 7:30.”Flexibles: “Which movie?” “Which dessert?” “When we open gifts (within a window).”Share it with your child/teen (and any other adults involved) before the big day.Resource: Brief script:“Here's what matters most to me so everyone's nervous system is okay…”“Here's what you can choose so it still feels fun for you…”Build a Regulation Plan: Before / During / AfterGoal: Move from reactive parenting to proactive emotion regulation.Do: Create a 3-part plan:Before: sleep, food, hydration, quiet time, predict the tough momentsDuring: micro-breaks, movement, sensory supports, time limitsAfter: decompression time, low-demand evening, early bedtime when possibleResource: “30/30 Rule” for high stimulation days: every ~30–60 minutes of stimulation, aim for a brief downshift (bathroom break, fresh air, water, quiet corner).Replacement Behaviours for Screen/Scroll TrapsGoal: Reduce comparison + mindless scrolling (a major holiday stress amplifier).Do: Choose a replacement behaviour you'll do instead of scrolling when stressed:5-minute walkshort stretchtea + 3 slow breathstext one friend directly (real connection)Resource: Set a phone boundary: “No social media before noon” or “10 minutes max, with a timer.”Create a “Code Word” + Exit Plan (Kids and Teens)Goal: Give kids a dignified way to signal overwhelm without melting down.Do: Pick a code word (e.g., “yellow light,” “reset,” “quiet break”).Define what happens when they use it:you step out togetherthey go to a quiet spotheadphones/hoodie breakshort car break if neededResource: Collaborative language:“Your job is to notice overwhelm early. My job is to help you reset.”Practice “Containment” When Volume or Energy RisesGoal: Prevent spirals by regulating yourself first.Do: When you notice irritation rising:Pause (one breath)Name internally: “My nervous system is activated.”Do one downshift: step away, splash cold water, 10 slow exhales, or a short walk.Resource: A simple mantra: “I can be the calm, even when it's loud.”Set Expectations Explicitly Goal: Reduce disappointment driven by vague, magical expectations.Do: Ask:“What are you most excited about—specifically?”“What would make the day feel like a win?”Then set realistic anchors:one meaningful momentone active thingone connection pointResource: “Lower the bar, deepen the moment.” (Connection > performance.)Plan for Sensory Needs Goal: Prevent overload (lights, noise, crowds, scratchy clothes, social demands).Do: Pack a “regulation kit”:headphones/earbudsgum/mintsfidgethoodie/comfort itemsunglasses/hatsnack + waterResource: Let kids opt into brief “parallel play” (being near others without forced interaction).Use “Let It Go vs. Address It” Sorting Goal: Avoid adults getting pulled into old roles and conflicts.Do: Before gatherings, decide:2 things you'll let go (minor irritations)1 thing you'll address if needed (a true boundary)Use a short phrase to hold it:“Not today.”“That's not up for discussion.”“We're keeping it simple this year.”Resource: “Boundaries are kind when they're clear.”End-of-Day Debrief: 3–2–1 ResetGoal: Teach emotional learning without shame; build resilience over time.Do (at bedtime or next morning):3 things that went okay2 moments that were hard1 tweak for next timeResource: Keep it brief and neutral. The point is learning, not blame.BonusThe holidays represent a perfect storm for dysregulation:· Increased sensory input (noise, crowds, events)· Disrupted routines (sleep, meals, schedules)· Heightened expectations (“This should be special”)· Social comparison (especially via social media)· Relational triggers (family dynamics, unresolved patterns) 1. Emotions Escalate When Predictability Drops When structure disappears, the nervous system has to work harder. For children especially, this can lead to:· irritability· emotional outbursts· shutdown or withdrawal The solution isn't stricter control—it's intentional scaffolding:· spacing events· building in rest· protecting sleep and nutrition· pacing stimulation 2. Overstimulation Looks Like “Bad Behaviour” Holiday meltdowns are often mislabeled as entitlement or attitude. In reality, they are frequently signs of:· sensory overload· emotional saturation· unmet regulation needs This episode reframes behaviour as communication—consistent with an emotion-coaching lens. 3. Parents' Regulation Is the Regulating Force Children borrow regulation from adults. When parents:· anticipate their own limits,· step away before exploding,· name and honor boundaries, they are modeling exactly the skills we want children to internalize. This is co-regulation in action. 4. Expectations Drive Emotional Pain Disappointment often comes not from what happens, but from the gap between:· what we imagined, and· what actually unfolded. This episode emphasizes helping both adults and children:· name expectations,· reality-check them,· and flexibly adjust rather than collapse into frustration. 5. Emotion Regulation Is Proactive, Not Reactive Regulation works best before emotions peak so it's important to use proactive strategies such as:· identifying non-negotiables in advance· planning recovery time· setting clear internal boundaries· collaborating with children ahead of time Suggested Listener Reflection Questions· What parts of the holidays are most dysregulating for me?· Which expectations am I carrying that may not be realistic?· Where could less stimulation create more connection?· What would it look like to model emotional boundaries for my child?· How can I help my family “ride the wave” rather than fight it?Enjoying the show? Episode 247How 2 Suppress DopamineSensers! In the age of social media, I believe we keep our phones and other technological devices close by and the screen exposure can be quite excessive to the point where we get overstimulated by too much dopamine. Other forms of stimulation can be just as effective in causing the brain to be overworked such as adding so much on the plate trying to do it all at once. Let's talk about how we can manage that a bit. For those of us who live alone, there are so many perks to having such peace…but what about the other side of the game? Just as there are pros to living by yourself, there's certainly some cons to doing so. What could they be? No one to bing a series with? No one to taste the soup (where's the spoon, ah ha!)? Or what about just mere presence of another soul? Check out what I speak on in this topic .If you watch the news and social media enough, it'll consume you into thinking that we are just a hateful collection of people. I beg to differ, yes there are people who really are filled with rage and love to watch the world burn…but I also believe that there are those who are tired of fighting that shit and just want to be at peace with themselves let alone life as we know it. So how does one overcome the current state of hateful rhetoric that's being pumped into our minds through social media programming and other forms of propaganda where divide and conquer is beneficial to a ghost we are not able to see? Let's discuss. May God and His Universe remove any negative energy you may have stored from reading this. If you dig the episode, click, like, and share on your page. Help build the tribe of healing
