When meditating, we often concentrate on our breathing and when we get into that routine, we can sometimes forget that following your breath is really just one way to meditate. There are many other ways and when we change it up, very often we see things differently so much so that when we come back to our old ways of doing things, we can actually see them again, as if it is the first time, with a brand new perspective. This meditation hopes to help the meditator get to that place of seeing things again, for the first time. One breath at a time.

She completes the meditation with her poem, "I Am Noticing".I Am Noticing, by Julie Potiker.I am noticing everything all at once, all the time, so much so that some things lay down on top of others.Last night, sitting in the courtyard after dinner, listening to what my husband was saying, hearing his words and the tone and timber of his voice, I was struck by the tempo of the crickets – 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4, doing 4-4 time quite deliberately and consistently as a metronome.Meanwhile, the two big dogs lay on the faded, terra-cotta tiles and slept with breath in 1-4 time, big breath in, then beat beat beat, big breath out.Madeline on her side, her big belly shaved at the vet that morning, rising and falling like a bellows. Eloise, 4 feet away, snout on the ground, snoring in 1-4 time. When I mentioned it, my husband said, he never would have noticed it, but now that he did, the crickets remind him of his childhood in the Midwest outside of Detroit. Yes, I said, Cleveland, too, but in those places, we would have fireflies. I wish we had fireflies too.Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos", and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos". Discover the rejuvenating power of Whole Body Breath Meditation to ground and renew your body with oxygen flow. Breathwork is a powerful tool for reducing stress, alleviating anxiety, and lowering blood pressure, helping you ground into your body and return to your natural state of being. By practicing deep breathing for grounding, you can reconnect with your breath, bringing calmness and balance to your life.Breathing brings us energy. Each inhalation sends vital oxygen into our cells, fueling our body's energy production, while each exhalation releases waste and toxins, preventing stagnation and supporting vital functions. This grounding meditation technique is particularly beneficial for calming the nervous system and relieving feelings of anxiety or stress. By focusing on Whole Body Breathing, you don't need to control your breath—simply be present in the moment. As you breathe in, envision your whole body drawing in fresh oxygen. As you breathe out, picture your entire body releasing tension and toxins. This practice not only renews your body but also helps regulate your nervous system, making it an excellent addition to your daily routine or a tool to use whenever you need to center yourself. Embrace this grounding and renewal meditation to restore balance and enhance your overall well-being.I LOVE YOU!

Learn Buddhist Mindfulness Breathing! Want to do breathing meditation like the Buddha? It's known as Ānāpānasati / Ānāpānasmṛti but is commonly referred to as "mindfulness of breathing". And it can be as straightforward as that. You are observing the breath without control, force, judgement, etc. While this sounds easy, your body has another agenda. You'll have thoughts, an itch, muscle aches, etc., to distract you. With practice, you will also observe these things, and just "let them go". While there are many different ways (and levels) to mindfulness of breathing, I'll give you a short and simple version here. Don't worry about trying to cover all these steps - just work on focusing on one spot on your body (such as the inside of your nostrils) and observe the breath going in and out, and your counting. That's it! With practice, and under the proper guidance of a teacher, this breathing meditation has many benefits to the development of meditative concentration, insight into conditioned phenomena, and much more! This is a shorter version of Episode 71 "Tranquil Ocean Shamatha," with a bit less instruction. Shamatha or “peaceful abiding” helps stabilize the mind by cultivating a steady awareness of the object of meditation, in this case, the breath. You can do the same practice using alternative anchors such as bodily sensations or sounds. Staying present  to an anchor provides scaffolding or training wheels to help keep your mind focused. Over time, practicing Shamatha meditation steadies you inwardly.  You learn to calmly witness your thoughts without being triggered by them. Eventually, this leads to a natural decrease in unhelpful thoughts. Very freeing! This meditation is partly inspired by one offered in the book REVERSE MEDITATIONS by Andrew Holecek. This week's podcast episode is a guided breath meditation for sleep. I made this recording a while back, and I felt inspired to share it on the podcast now, since the last episode was a guest interview on sleep with yoga therapist Monica Le Baron. (The meditation itself starts at approximately 5:40, after a brief intro with a few updates about my book-writing process, the schedule of upcoming podcast episodes, and some background on today's guided practice.)  Many of us suffer from sleep disturbances from time to time, whether it's due to stress, hormone changes, interruptions to our schedule, pain or illness. This breath practice is one of my go-to tools for a night when I need to soothe my body back to sleep. This is a simple practice that guides you through a process of relaxing your body and lengthening your exhales. As we practice counting the breaths, we focus the mind on the present moment, setting aside thoughts of the day. Gradually moving into longer and longer exhales helps to slow the heart rate and down-regulate the nervous system, which promotes peaceful sleep.  You could do this practice to wind down at any point in the evening, or right in your bed as you drift off to sleep. So, I hope you'll find a comfy spot to practice, and enjoy this guided breath meditation for sleep.  Shamatha, which means “peaceful abiding” or “tranquility," is the foundational meditation of Buddhist practice. It helps stabilize the mind by cultivating a steady awareness of the object of meditation, in this case, the breath. You can do the same practice using alternative anchors such as bodily sensations or sounds. Staying present  to an anchor provides scaffolding or training wheels to help keep your mind focused. Once you become proficient at Shamatha, you no longer need an object of meditation. Meditating without an anchor or reference point is known as Open Awareness. She completes the meditation with her poem, "Holding Court".Holding Court, by Julie PotikerScattered about, Western Sycamore leaves forever remind me of book pages - undone, unglued, unloved, discarded.Feeling this dip in mood, I make my way to the caged veggie garden below in search of something yummy.Bright green cauliflower lifts my spirits. I wrestle it out of the rich soil with the help of Cutco kitchen scissors. I really must get some garden shears. Been a year that I've been saying that in my head, and sometimes out my mouth. It's 5pm now, so the buzz saws, trucks, and workmen's chatter are silenced. Two heads cauliflower filling my hands, I'm stopped in my tracks by the sounds and sights of happy hour in full swing in the Scrub Pine.Standing stock still, I search for movement along the branches. Birds the size of pine cones, and dark smooth pine cones that look like birds tucked in tight among the spikey needles in the fading light.Bewick's Wren was holding court. His friends, Bushtit, Warbler and Towhee singing a cappella. A refrain rang out from Crow, he was winging it, he may have lost the score. Above it all, Red Tailed Hawk was conducting. What a blessing. I stand a while, take it all in. Darkness is descending and with it the last of the temperate air. The chill nudges me to move along, it's time to make dinner, my soul restored.-"Holding Court", by Julie Potiker.Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos", and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos". Welcome the new year with this episode of Awaken Your Wise Woman, and join host Elizabeth Cush in a centering meditation. It's a new year! January, as you might remember, gets its name from the two-faced Roman god Janus, who could look back at the old year and forward at the new. That makes it a perfect time to take stock of our lives and release those things that no longer serve us so we can move into the future without unnecessary burdens. In this episode of the Awaken Your Wise Woman podcast, host Biz Cush, LCPC, a licensed professional therapist, founder of Progression Counseling in Annapolis, Md., and a life coach for highly sensitive women, talks about the New Year and how you can help shape the podcast in the months ahead. She also leads a guided centering meditation designed to help you get grounded; cleanse and nourish yourself; shed unwanted habits and embrace the new you.   You can find the full show notes for this and every episode here.

I will cry with you, though the pain I feel cannot compare with your suffering.I will sing with you, because my hope will not be shattered.I will take your hand, because my heart is infinite.I will hold my breath with you for another day, though anguish, fear, love, and resolve, because we are still here, blessed with breathing. -Still Breathing, by Anonymous.Find out more about using mindfulness in everyday life through Julie's books, "SNAP: From Calm to Chaos", and "Life Falls Apart, But You Don't have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos". Meditation can help us with one of the most important things we could do for ourselves, remember to take a rest between two deep breaths. One breath at a time.

This meditation aims to remind the meditator to stop and think about the abundance in our life and to develop the mindfulness to do so when we are stressing out in our day to day life.
