After our meditation and nature connection retreat at the weekend, I thought it was a good idea to run a class on the meditations that we did in nature. Connection in nature is all about allowing natural environment into an our experience. All the sensations and smells and sounds become part of the totality of the experience of the present moment, which is what mindfulness is. To experience this, we need to learn to open our awareness to our environment. In this class, I teach a process of incrementally opening our awareness. Although this is I'm an important part of nature connection, it's an important part of experience in life rather than existing in a sensory bubble on autopilot which is what our culture teaches us to do. Open awareness is a non-referential meditation, meaning you don't use any reference point such as the breath or the body to keep your mind focused. Those focal points are useful as first, but as you progress, they can hold you back. In open awareness, your attention rests with everything that's happening. To this end, you meditate with your eyes gently open. Normally our eyes are trained to focus on a single object. Here, you softly take in everything in your field of vision simultaneously, particularly the periphery, the way you might gaze at a wide expanse of ocean. In this way, you go beyond sitting in mindfulness to expand your meditation to embrace your daily life. The practice of openness can feel challenging at first because our minds are so habituated to contracting—around our problems, our storylines, our ideas—but the more you practice, the more you realize that openness is actually your natural state, and contraction is the source of suffering. Openness is the key to your freedom. This meditation is partly inspired by one offered in the book REVERSE MEDITATIONS by Andrew Holecek. This practice brings attention to the continuous space within and around the body, and the aliveness of sound, sensation and feeling that lives through us. While it's natural for attention to get distracted, the pathway home is a relaxing back into the awake space that is aware of this changing life.

Shamatha, which means “peaceful abiding” or “tranquility," is the foundational meditation of Buddhist practice. It helps stabilize the mind by cultivating a steady awareness of the object of meditation, in this case, the breath. You can do the same practice using alternative anchors such as bodily sensations or sounds. Staying present to an anchor provides scaffolding or training wheels to help keep your mind focused. Once you become proficient at Shamatha, you no longer need an object of meditation. Meditating without an anchor or reference point is known as Open Awareness. Over time, practicing Shamatha meditation steadies you inwardly. You learn to calmly witness your thoughts without being triggered by them. Eventually, this leads to a natural decrease in unhelpful thoughts. Very freeing! This meditation is partly inspired by one offered in the book REVERSE MEDITATIONS by Andrew Holecek. Today we premiere two tracks from Irish techno imprint, Awareness System. Pineal Navigation and Daniel Andréasson join up for a split EP on wax as the pairing deliver raw and minimalistic machine driven techno. Swedish producer Daniel Andréasson focuses on experimental sides of dance music and forward thinking techno productions. His textured approach to techno has caught the attention of some of the industries most prominent names including Aphex Twin and more. Daniel is a regular on the Stockholm club scene, and has also graced the infamous Tresor Berlin. Pineal Navigation, a.k.a. Niall Dunne, is a name that needs very little introduction within the Irish techno scene. Niall is widely known as one of the best techno DJs in Ireland, and has a pedigree for raw and driving machine driven techno. His journey first began when he won a DJ competition with Mixmag UK, giving him the opportunity to play at the renowned Dance Valley Festival, Amsterdam where he shared the stage with techno legend's such as Kevin Saunders, Derek May, and Chris Liebing. Since then, Niall has been DJ'ing in the biggest clubs in Dublin and is a regular feature in some of Ireland's biggest festivals, such as Life Festival, and Electric Picnic. Not satisfied with only expressing himself through Djing, Niall began experimenting with synthesizers and drum machines and began to immerse himself in music production. This process gave birth to the Pineal Navigation moniker which focused on capturing his productions through live jams in one take and keeping the energy of the process intact. When Dublin based DJ and producer Pineal Navigation set up Awareness System in 2020, he intended to use the label as an outlet for music, specifically Techno & Electro, that told an evocative story. As the world went into lockdown, Niall, aka Pineal Navigation, decided to hone in on a sound that produced a positive frequency and dismantle the negative energy that started to seep into everyday life. Two years on, the Dublin-based artist launches Awareness System with a split EP called ‘Combination 1'. Swedish producer Daniel Andréasson contributes two tracks to the release, adding another layer of intensity that aligns with the label's aesthetic. Andréasson is an artist who approaches music with a no-frills attitude, which inspired Niall to invite his long-time friend into the fold of Awareness System. On ‘Sensory Open', Pineal Navigation creates an eerie atmosphere with swirling synths and gnarly basslines — a response to the chaos unfolding in the modern world. Daniel Andréasson cranks up the pace on ‘Enable' with wonky drum patterns and distorted FX, veering into the darker textures of techno. The flip-side opens with Daniel Andréasson's ‘Money Is A Motivator' where he mutates bleeps and crackling percussion, luring the listener into a dystopian soundscape. Pineal Navigation closes the EP with ‘Off The Earth', a stomping blend of rumbling bass and stabby percussion. A potent club-orientated track to mark the first chapter in the story of Awareness System. Meditation: Open Awareness – Relaxing Back into Presence - This practice brings attention to the continuous space within and around the body, and the aliveness of sound, sensation and feeling that lives through us. While it's natural for attention to get distracted, the pathway home is a relaxing back into the awake space that is aware of this changing life.
Take a few moments to unhook from past and future, from ideas of who you are, even from your name, your gender, your age, and bask in your pure essence. Be the living field of awareness that drinks in the moment at hand. Taste the immense inner quiet that always resides within you, the love that you are. This meditation is partially inspired by Adyashanti and Eckhart Tolle. It concludes with a metta prayer for all beings and especially people suffering from mental illness. Music by Christopher Lloyd Clarke.

Welcome to the Mindful FIRE Podcast, where we explore living mindfully on the path to financial independence and beyond. In this 20 minute guided meditation, Adam Coelho leads us through the practice of Open Awareness. This practice is a bit different than what we've practiced in past weeks but I think you'll really enjoy it. As you may know, meditation is not something mystical or magical, it's simply mental training. It's literally exercise for your brain, specifically the mental muscles of attention and meta-attention. Attention, everyone understands, as simply directing your focus to a particular object, for example the breath. Meta-attention however is “the attention of attention” or the ability to know your attention has wandered. Both the mindfulness practice I posted a few weeks ago and this practice train the mental muscles of attention and meta-attention, but do so in different ways, much like different exercises at the gym can strengthen certain muscles in your body. This practice begins with focusing our mind on the breath. From there we expand out until we're resting in an open, choiceless awareness. In this open awareness, we're practicing simply observing our experience as it comes, stays for a moment and then moves along. We notice the breath, sounds, sensations in the body, and thoughts in the mind as they come and go. I find this practice very helpful, especially when I want to be creative or would like to open my mind to new possibilities. That's not exactly the point of the practice but I find it to be a nice side effect. The point is, as with most mindfulness practices, to develop awareness of what's happening right now with an attitude of openness, curiosity and kindness. I hope you enjoy this practice and would love to hear what you think on Facebook or LinkedIn (#mindfulFIRE) Please share this with your friends and write us a 5 Star review on Apple Podcasts!
