This episode features excerpts from the February 8th performance of Dennis Hensley's The MisMatch Game at the Los Angeles LGBT Center's Renberg Theatre. The panelists are Danny Casillas as Reba Areba, Jackie Beat as Bea Arthur, Sherry Vine as Rue McClanahan, Melissa Peterman as Rena Z., Felix Pire as Antonio Banderas and Tom Lenk as Tilda Swinton. The questions cover everyone from Jonathan Bailey to Betty White to Benson Boone. The evening was a bizonkers blast and raised over $4,100 for the Center. After the MisMatch Game clips, there's a super-sized So This Happened...where Dennis talks about the Oscar party he attended where he missed a trivia question about Centerstage, a delightful candle-making class he took at General Wax in North Hollywood, going dancing at the Kylie XCX night at Precinct hosted by past guests Mark Nubar and DJ Shyboy and attending the 25th Anniversary benefit screening of Coyote Ugly with most of the cast in attendance. It was true in 2000 and it's true today: you really can't fight the moonlight.

PASS began operating as its own organization in May 2021. The PASS database only stores binary yes/no ‘work clearance' data - meaning no individual test results are uploaded to PASS. Clinical staff with appropriate licenses at the testing partner make a work clearance determination based on the results from the testing panel. The testing protocol requires nine different tests for 7 STIs. Clearance is given for 14 days from the date of the first sample collection. The LGBTQ History Project maintains that Don Kilhefner is the most dangerous gay activist alive in America. For over 50 years, he has fought to secure civil rights for LGBTQ people. Without a doubt, the fruits of his work have changed the world. He was a founding member of the Gay Liberation Front in 1970, one of the first organizations to bring gay rights to the general public's attention. He co-founded the Los Angeles LGBT Center, which has become the model of all LGBTQ Centers around the world with a $172 million yearly budget and nearly 800 employees. In 1978, he co-founded the Radical Faeries, a counter-culture network and movement that explores queer consciousness and queer spirituality and is alive and well today all around the world. He has dedicated the second chapter of his life to the exploration of queer consciousness and his community-based psychology practice. We start this interview by discussing the importance of intergenerational connections in the LGBTQ community. Next, we get into a juicy conversation addressing how heterosupremacy defined who we are based on sex, and now it's time to re-envision who we are and what it means to be gay beyond sex. We explored the possible purpose and roles of LGBTQ folks from a historical and anthropological perspective. Two possible roles we identified are the altruistic impulse, and the cooperative principal which Don describes. Don then shares the origin story of the radical faeries and the part he played in starting the radical faerie movement along with Harry Hay. Delightfully we get to learn some of the beautiful details from the very first radical faerie gathering. We end with Don sharing his thoughts on what our community's biggest challenges. This included a concept called "elite capture" meaning we've moved from a grassroots community-based movement to a movement where the elite have monopolization the LGBTQ community and it's fight for rights. This shift is failing, and Don and I consider what needs to change. This is a pretty epic interview with a very epic figurehead of the LGBTQ history!Support the show
I love to ask people, “What's the best event you've ever attended? And why?” Was it your best friend's wedding because you knew everyone there? Was it a baby shower because everyone was there for the same reason - to help the new parents prepare for their next chapter? Was it an amazing concert because the community had taken on a life of its own with costumes and bracelets and dancing? Most often, a person's favorite event boils down to its community - a group of like-minded people coming together to celebrate or accomplish or support a common cause. Without a focus on building an authentic and inclusive community, our walks and runs and rides risk blending together and losing their distinctiveness. In this episode, P2PPF's Marcie Maxwell is joined by Tracy Evans, Race Director of AIDS/LifeCycle, a fully-supported, seven-day bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, raising money for both the Los Angeles LGBT Center and San Francisco AIDS Foundation. AIDS/LifeCycle was recognized as the 2023 Program of the Year at the last Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum conference.Tracy shares insights into how they have cultivated one of the industry's largest event personalities. We'll discover the behind-the-scenes efforts that make their cyclist community thrive not only during the event itself, but also throughout the year. Tracy also discusses intentional steps taken by AIDS/LifeCycle to foster inclusivity and the positive results they have achieved. In today's episode, we'll explore: Finding and cultivating your event's voice Tactics for creating a truly inclusive event The power of authentic communication in strengthening both participant and team communities Mentioned LinksAIDS/LifeCycleAIDS Life/Cycle - YouTubeStay Connected on LinkedInConnect with TracyConnect with MarcieConnect with the Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum (00:00) - Welcome to The P2P Soap Box (02:06) - Introducing Tracy Evans (09:45) - Building an Event with Personality (19:13) - Inclusivity (34:33) - Leading a Complex Moving Fundraiser (40:16) - Preparation through Danger (44:19) - Learn More!

The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy
The Practicalities of Mental Health and Gender Affirming Care for Trans Youth: An Interview with Jordan Held, LCSW Curt and Katie interview Jordan Held, LCSW, about gender affirming care, trans mental health, the practicalities of transition (as well as the different types of transition), specifics when working with trans youth, and the politicization of trans folks. We also explore culture and privilege related to transition. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! An Interview with Jordan Held, LCSW Jordan Held (he/him/his), LCSW is a Primary Therapist and Gender Specialist at Visions Adolescent Treatment Center. Prior to Visions, Jordan was a Therapist and Intake Coordinator at Children's Hospital Los Angeles in the Center for Trans Youth Health and Development, the largest trans youth health clinic in the USA. Jordan's mental health practice centers around creating a trauma-informed and healing-centered space for both adolescents and their families. Jordan's expertise is working with gender and sexual minority youth with complex histories of PTSD and trauma. Jordan speaks internationally about creating and supporting affirmative LGBTQ+ environments with an emphasis on informed consent and enhanced family communication. As a queer-identified, transgender man, Jordan brings an important dual perspective to his work as a mental health provider. Prior to social work, Jordan worked extensively in secondary school education, with a decade of experience teaching, coaching, and developing health and wellness curricula. Jordan's work focuses on gender violence prevention, diversity, equity, inclusion, and cultivating strength and belonging for teens. Jordan is on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles LGBT Center, the Laurel Foundation, JQ International, and Mental Health America of Los Angeles. Jordan is also a long-time facilitator at Transforming Family, a support group for gender-diverse youth and their family. Jordan holds a Master of Social Welfare degree from UCLA, a Master of Sports Leadership degree from Northeastern University, and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Connecticut. Jordan is an avid sneakerhead who self-cares by lifting heavy weights, going to the beach, loving his rescue dog, and embracing his gender euphoria! In this podcast episode, we talk about trans mental health For Pride Month, we wanted to deepen our conversation on trans mental health and what therapists should know when working with trans individuals. What is gender-affirmative care? “Trans people are being used as political pawns.” – Jordan Held, LCSW The way that “gender affirming care” is being taken out of context What is actually happening, how it has been politicized The misinformation related to what is available to children who are exploring their gender (i.e., parental consent and youth care) The role of therapists versus the role of medical providers Discussion of gender norms Different types of transition for trans individuals Social transition (name, pronouns, clothes, haircut) Medical interventions that may start during puberty (i.e., puberty blockers, progesterone only birth control) Cross sex hormones and surgeries (which actually require a long process) States are very specific for what they require for gender care (as do insurance companies) Conversations in therapy for trans youth Gender journey Meeting the kids where they're at Lying to get what they need Letters and recommendations for surgery The gender dysphoria diagnosis and sorting that out from depression, anxiety, etc. Supporting trans youth with social transition and getting the support they need The concerns with maladaptive coping skills available online Positive resources for trans youth (scroll down to resources) Identity and impacts The Politicization of Trans Individuals “Shame on us as adults that we are so scared, we have so much fear over – let's be honest – what's in someone's pants, right? All of this has to do with the fear of something that we don't know. This fear… that somebody's genitals do not align what we think is in their pants. And as an adult talking to another adult, that's kind of gross, right? Like, why as adults do we care so much about what is in a kid's pants?” – Jordan Held, LCSW Jordan grew in privilege when he transitioned Legislation Schools removing conversations related to gender and sexuality Play and sports being withheld from trans kids Bias and how being trans is perceived The actual numbers of trans folks who want to play sports or want to use the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity Advice for trans kids and families where gender care is illegal, advice for therapists Age limits and laws that don't align with logic Culture, privilege, and being trans Increasing or decreasing privilege when one transitions Getting used to the changed dynamic within society based on external experience The complexity of the experience and the changing of the experience The concept of “passing” and how it taps into bias Our Generous Sponsors for this episode of the Modern Therapist's Survival Guide: GreenOak Accounting At GreenOak Accounting, they believe that every private practice should be profitable. In today's episode, host Calan Breckon unpacks the heaviness around depression with guest and therapist, Jacob Monkarsh (LMFT & CGP). What are the signs and symptoms someone should be aware of?What are the biggest triggers for gay men struggling with depression? How can someone currently struggling with depression work to get out of the cycle? How can people best support someone struggling with depression? During the episode, Jacob asked a very important question concerning gay men and our childhood experiences: "What happens when someone can't connect with themself?" and as children, we often can't connect with ourselves fully once we realize something is "different" about us and we begin hiding who we truly are, but is that creating disassociation within us and our community? Therapy is crucial for our mental health, yet some people still look at it as unobtainable due to financial struggle. There is also still myths around Therapy that say you're weak if you need to go, you're less of a man if you want to talk about your emotions, and that Therapy is only for “other people who are broken.” In today's episode, host Calan Breckon unpacks all you need to know about Therapy with licensed marriage and family Therapist, Jake Myers, who's also founder and CEO of LGBTQ Therapy Space and writes a regular column for Queerty.com. Together they explore questions like: Why is it important LGBTQ+ peoples have access to specialize therapists from the community? What are some of the old myths about therapy that just aren't true? How long does someone usually go to therapy?Where can someone find funding or support if they don't have the means right now to cover the costs of Therapy? By the end of this episode, you'll have broken down the myths about Therapy and you'll have the knowledge on how to start (or continue) your own Therapy journey.
