Okay, so maybe “Cyberpunk” is a stretch for this one. Still, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to discuss one of our special guest—writer, critic, podcaster, and media consultant—Fran Tirado's childhood faves. This week, we are talking about the first movie in Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids franchise, which debuted in 2001. Alexa PeñaVega and Daryl Sabara star as the titular kids who have to spring into action when their ex-spy parents—played by Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino—are captured by the sinister duo played by Alan Cumming and Tony Shalhoub. The supporting cast includes Cheech Marin, Robert Patrick, and Teri Hatcher, as well as the introduction of Danny Trejo's iconic character “Machete.” Listen in as we revisit the iconic kids classic that offered early Latinx representation in a blockbuster film.Note: Enjoy this episode of the podcast as a video at patreon.com/femfreq or on Youtube here: https://youtu.be/EFUn1duBHdsTime Stamps:46:11 - What's your Freq Out?Fran on the Disney+ series Ms MarvelKat on the series The BearAnita on the novel A Lady for a Duke by Alexis HallLinks Mentioned:Feminist Frequency's Tropes vs Women in Video Games episode on gender signifiers - https://feministfrequency.com/video/ms-male-character-tropes-vs-women/Find Fran:https://twitter.com/fransquishcoFran's Joy Digest newsletter - https://fransquishco.substack.com/Like a Virgin podcast - https://open.spotify.com/show/5r2qw5Zlp6mxtteQeF5n3K?si=de26f919ffe24192Find Us:Join our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsSubscribe to our Star Trek PodcastTwitterInstagramtwitch.tv/femfreq (every Thursday at 6:30pm PT)

June is Pride Month, the unfortunate time when many corporations claim they support LGBTQ+ people, but also support politicians who actively work against LGBTQ+ rights. It's not a new phenomenon – even before June, for example, activists called out Disney, which promotes itself as being gay-friendly. We talk about “rainbow washing” with journalist Fran Tirado, and how corporate pride can be done respectfully. And in headlines: President Biden delivered a prime-time address on guns, today marks 100 days since Russia invaded Ukraine, and the White House said it will finally pay its interns.Show Notes:Donate to Crooked Media's Pride Fund – https://crooked.com/pride/Sign up for Crooked Coffee's launch on June 21st – http://go.crooked.com/coffee-wadJournalist Fran Tirado – https://twitter.com/fransquishcoFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/whataday/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

My guest this week is Fran Tirado, who you might recognize as the host of the Food 4 Thot podcast. Fran grew up in a sheltered religious community, and it was a chance encounter with gay Greek myths that helped him break out. Now he's dedicated himself to a different kind of scripture — one of powerful femmes, radical queer liberation, and sex without shame. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First — Muppet fans, I just released a new video about the gay history of the Muppets. Stepping out of a predominantly white, heteronormative community as a gay, mixed-race filipino man in Oregon, Matt Brooks often felt he had to hide who he was to fit in. But after leaving high school, he knew he wasn't being authentic to himself. He moved to LA and found is chosen family — ones who led him to also find his calling working as a digital creator and social media voice proudly learning about his identity on the way. The journey has led him to work on campaigns for grindr, E!, Youth to the People, making them a more inclusive space. Now he's finding his footing back in advocacy, pushing for change with Folx Health, an organization working to provide health to queer and trans people. In this episode, we get into the unlearning, shame to freeness of learning to survive and thrive as who we are. We discuss the swift rise and fall of Netflix's queer branding strategist, young millennial queer culture's personal branding obsession, assimilation into corporate culture as a reverse resistance optic, media millennials washing their personal interactions with buzzterms and marketspeak, and how young LGBTQ+ narcissists regard the AIDS crisis as an obstacle that successive generations can claim as an empowerment narrative despite total removal from the tragedy and zero personal stakes. Then we remember our hero Larry Kramer and talk about the instant backlash against him on the day of his death, on the part of wimps, sex addicts, and losers. We also get into the modern syndrome of judging past behaviors through today's moral majority standards. The legendary Fran Tirado is here to tell us what to watch and where we can stream it.
It was my encounter with Hello Mr in 2016, the magazine about men who date men, that inspired me to throw my hat into the LGBTQ media ring; for the first time, I saw what was possible and I was hooked. I turned to the masthead, saw Fran Tirado’s name and emailed him. We connected, we bonded and he’s since become one of my friends and queeroes. In this conversation, Fran and I discuss the ever-evolving landscape of LGBTQ media, the end of white twink idolatry, enjoying your own company, working in service of a greater purpose and extending and expanding the modern queer cultural canon. We recorded this conversation in New York City during World Pride 2019. You made it to the third episode for season two of Matter of Fat: a body positive podcast with Midwest sensibilities! Co-hosts Cat Polivoda and Saraya Boghani highlight community voices with a focus on body size, body positivity, & fat liberation. The Fat Dish is robust, y’all! First, the summer Big Fat Super Swap is June 15th. Also on June 15th is the TC Juneteenth event. The inaugural Podcast Du Nord conference will be June 22nd. Twin Cities Pride will also be the weekend of the 22nd. Cake’s Fat Splash pool party sold out but check out Allgo to see where other events will be held around the US. Saraya shared her adventures in lawn bowling and spending more time with Cat by catching the movie Booksmart, being interviewed by the Star Tribune, and attending a New Leaders Council - Twin Cities fundraising and celebration event. Cat was part of the NLC Louisiana chapter back in the day and is excited to support the TC chapter. Cat is a fan of Cardio Bay, not a fan of plantar fasciitis, and is gearing up for a summer road trip extravaganza! C+S were so excited to interview Nancy Alayon - a badass business owner of the Salvadorian food truck Que Tal Street Eats. Nancy talks about her story as a matter of fat and the many identities that interact in that story. She also encourages everyone to reconsider your perspectives on emotional eating and how she is shaping the culture of the Twin Cities through recipes passed down from generation to generation and her own culinary twists. Writer Fran Tirado sits down with Cameron to discuss increasing Out Magazine's intersectionality as Deputy Editor, queer icons, and leaning into your queerness. This episode is sponsored by Care/of (www.takecareof.com code: QUEERY50) and Zola (www.zola.com/QUEERY).
Note: this is a rerun of a previous episode. Nancy staged a friend-tervention for Joe Rodriguez. Will finding your gaggle be your resolution for the new year? And if you want to broaden your friendship horizons this year, join our How to Get a Gaggle project! Special thanks to Fran Tirado of the podcast Food 4 Thot, Eric Sosa at C'mon Everybody, and Bill Clark and Libby Willis at MeMe's Diner. Our friendship project is coordinated by Charlotte Cooper with help from Ashley Lusk, Caroline English, Sahar Baharloo, Sarah Sandbach, Fiona Carswell, and many more of our colleagues at WNYC Studios. Original music by Jeremy Bloom with additional music by Mystery Mammal ("You're Up There"), Podington Bear ("Gizmo"), and Creo ("Memory"). Theme by Alex Overington. We need your help! Are you thinking about money as this new year begins? So are we. It seems like so much of the economy and the milestones of financial planning are geared towards cishet people -- the tax incentives to get married, the costs associated with starting a family. And healthcare. Like, all of healthcare. So here at Nancy, we’re taking a look at how queer people navigate the financial system. Has there been a time when you’ve noticed you’ve had a harder time sorting out money issues than your friends who aren’t queer? Or is there a way you’ve sort of hacked the system -- to get what you need but on your own terms? We want to hear about your experience. Record a voice memo telling us about your queer money moments and send it to nancy@wnyc.org. Support our work! Become a Nancy member today at nancypodcast.org/donate.

Hello my little Skittles, have I got some vittles for you: This week’s Junk is a special crossover ep with those gay sluts who love to read, Food 4 Thot! That’s right, we’ve got Fran Tirado, Joseph Osmundson, and Dennis Norris II—nobody’s junior—showing us that Junk can pluck us from the brink of sibling estrangement, Junk can remind us to try with the corny optimism of youth, and Junk can reinforce a meaningful link we have to those we’ve lost, sometimes in ways we didn’t know when they were here. Fran Tirado is a writer, editor, queer community maker, and glitter evangelist. Joseph Osmundson is a scientist, non-fiction writer, total crop Top, and the softest bowl of soft-serve you’ll ever meet. Dennis Norris II—nobody’s junior—is a writer, reader, former figure skater, lapsed violist, and all-star around the way girl. We had our very first live show at The Greene Space in NYC! Fran Tirado, Tracy Clayton and Heben Nigatu fought for Matt's love in a dating game. We played Bad Thing Bingo, where audience members won the worst prizes. And Julian Velard played along both in song AND in drinking game. Plus Matt gave us a very serious reading from his very serious book. You can watch it on The Greene Space's youtube channel here --> https://youtu.be/Lr20bM3-F8s. And don't forget to check and see if Matt's coming to a town near you on his tour at everythingisawfulbook.com. We're taking a lil hiatus from the podcast while he's on tour, but keep your eyes on your feeds, we just might have a few surprises up our plaid flannel sleeves.
Claire and Erica are back with special guest Fran Tirado!

Sarah gets a sign from above -- BravoTV.com -- that RHOBH needs, née, requires, the deepest possible dive. So she Zooms up on of her fave anthropologists of Housewifery, Fran Tirado (writer, tv/film maker, and host of the pod "Like a Virgin!"). They pour some spiritual Casa Del Sol and have a nuanced kiki about the ways Rinna capitalized on the longstanding fractures between Kathy, Kyle, and Kim, the reasons capitalism may have played a friend-of role in Aspen's aftermath (and different takeaways about the Big Scene), and Meredith's changed views on handling friendship accountability with empathy vs revenge.
