Is the prospect of Canada's economic “soft landing” becoming increasingly wishful thinking? And what does a potentially rocky Canadian recession mean for the Vancouver housing market? This week, Bank of Montreal Chief Economist Doug Porter sits down with Matt & Cory for an up-to-the-minute talk on the challenges that the Canadian economy faces over the next calendar year. Are we in a much worse situation now than we thought only weeks ago? Do elevated interest rates stay higher for longer and crush the Canadian housing market? And what are the key metrics that Doug is watching to read the economic tea leaves? Listen up to one of Canada's best & brightest! Here is a SECURE LINK to donate to Jayden Lee's 100 Mile run for BC Children's Hospital.
Looking for a concise overview of the economy and housing markets across North America? This week, Ali Wolf, Chief Economist at Zonda & Advisor to the White House (yes, that White House), sits down with Matt & Adam to discuss the US housing market, the Vancouver real estate market & Canadian real estate in general. Are we in a housing bubble? Why is new construction driving the US real estate market and can the same happen here? And where are the hot spots for Canadians investing South of the border? It's hard to cover North American real estate in under an hour, but we get pretty damn close. Listen up and get after it!Here is a SECURE LINK to donate to Jayden Lee's 100 Mile run for BC Children's Hospital.
In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks about Team IMPACT and Michael Torello, who was diagnosed with Kernicterus as an infant, a type of brain damage that can cause athetoid cerebral palsy, hearing loss, and can cause problems with vision and teeth, and sometimes can cause intellectual disabilities, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Carolyn and John Torello, and 2023-24 captain Jayden Lee, join the conversation to talk about Michael's life, legacy, and how his presence has had long and deep connections to the Quinnipiac Men's Hockey Team. Michael passed away in 2021 at the age of 15, but he left behind an incredible legacy rooted in the power of believing, which was a key part of Quinnipiac's championship season. And if you have ever made plane and hotel reservations from a parking lot after a game, The Torellos have a story for you. And we can't resist a plug for www.oldbishopfarms.com in Connecticut, where the Torellos have a farm. All episodes begin with Quinnipiac Student Matt Mungo's call on the Quinnipiac Bobcat Sports Network of the National Championship goal. The Tenth Second is a production of the Quinnipiac University Podcast Studio, and is hosted by Keith Woodward, the university's director of facilities. The podcast is produced and engineered by Justin Moravsky, and is mastered by David DesRoches, the university's director of community programming. When it comes to real estate investing, we all know that time in the market is better than timing the market. No one knows this old adage better than Wesgroup Properties. Dean Johnson, Vice President of Development at Wesgroup, one of Western Canada's largest private developers, sits down with Matt & Adam to detail the company's proven approach to investing in Vancouver. We discuss the start of the Fall market, the ongoing impacts of interest rates and inflation, the top areas for investment in the Lower Mainland and the province, and the type of thinking required to make lasting moves in real estate. This is a master-class in investment strategy and community building, from the ground up. Get your notebook. Here is a SECURE LINK to donate to Jayden Lee's 100 Mile run for BC Children's Hospital.
In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks with Derek Schaedig who was Harvard University's goalie and recently graduated. Derek wrote an article called “Down but Not Out.” It starts with “My name is Derek Schaedig. I am a goalie for the men's hockey team at Harvard; I am a sophomore studying Psychology; I am a writer for The Crimson; and in April 2019, I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, more commonly referred to as depression. I am not immune to mental illness, and neither are many student-athletes.” This is a real example of what some athletes go through. And Derek had tremendous support from his teammates, classmates, coaches and parents, but there were some moments in his story that could have gone differently. Derek now works at the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan where he is a program coordinator. Derek's resilience is one that you might think about sharing, if you know someone who is struggling. And stay to the end; Harvard beats Quinnipiac in a critical game where the Bobcats have a 6-on-4 advantage late in the third period (by the way Rand pulls the goalie, and it works!) and Jayden Lee scored less than a minute into the power play to tie the game at two with about six minutes remaining in the game. Derek didn't want to bring it up, but we talked about it. All episodes begin with Quinnipiac Student Matt Mungo's call on the Quinnipiac Bobcat Sports Network of the National Championship goal. The Fall Market is two days old and already there is big news: a rate pause, new inventory, and a hanging verdict on where we go from here. This week, Murtaza Haider, Toronto Metropolitan University Professor & Financial Post Columnist, sits down with Matt & Adam to dig deep on all the burning questions top of mind. Does the Fall Market materialize? Will we see a rate cut in early 2024? And are real estate investors the only ones who can solve Canada's housing crisis? This is an action packed episode that should come with a degree. Get your notebook! Here is a SECURE LINK to donate to Jayden Lee's 100 Mile run for BC Children's Hospital.
In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks with a bunch of players to get a sense of their work ethic and what it took to earn a spot on the Quinnipiac Men's Hockey team. Keith speaks with Jayden Lee, who was s named captain of the 2023-24 team; Anthony and Joey and Cippolone, brothers who started playing in their garage, which they scarred with their pucks and which their mom just fixed last year; CJ McGee, who was in Texas when Coach Pecknold called; and livari Rasanen, who came over from Finland and who had no idea where or what Quinnipiac was (Spoiler: He has a national championship, his brother who went to Boston College…. doesn't); Noah Altman from California who was headed to Michigan – yup that Michigan – but as a regular student (no hockey); Christophe Fillion and Cristophe Tellier from just outside the Montreal area, came as a package (not officially), but they have been best friends since they were young kids. Timothy Heinke and Victor Czerneckianair are first-year students who live 10 minutes from each other, and played against each other one-on-one when they were 7 years old. Victor lost. You'll hear these stories and more, as we learn about what drew them to Quinnipiac. The summer saw two rate increases with the strong potential for a third right after Labour Day & it's leaving everyone wondering: will this break the real estate market? Hani Lammam, Executive Vice President of Cressey Development Group, sits down with Adam & Matt to give his take and it is anything but shortsighted. How will relentless rate increases impact both residential & commercial real estate for years to come? Are we entering a prolonged period of price discovery for many asset classes? And will the residential market see a glut of new inventory this fall? All that and so much more on today's episode. Level up! Master-Planned Communities are often conceived of as self-contained neighborhoods which ensure residents have little reason to leave. But they are not often built to be actual destinations for others. Unless, that is, there is a local farmer's market & much celebrated brewery anchoring the community square. This week, President of Century Group, Sean Hodgins, sits down with Adam & Matt for a sprawling conversation about building large-scale communities that both respect a community's existing identity & push towards a modern, more sustainable future. This is more than a development; it's a vibrant, interconnected community designed to celebrate life at every corner. The only thing with more heat than Wreck Beach right now is the speculation around what happens this fall in Vancouver Real Estate. After a surprisingly strong Spring - but also two recent dampening interest rate hikes - the outcome of the upcoming fall market is anyone's guess. But some people have much clearer crystal balls than others. BCREA Chief Economist Brendon Ogmundson sits down once again with Adam & Matt to reflect on the first half of the 2023 real estate market and more importantly what is to come after this Labour Day. Will more inventory come online & will buyers show up? Is a soft landing possible in both the economy & the real estate market? And which are the most durable submarkets in our province? Part two: after discussing marriage, conspiracy theories and cryptozoology, Caroline asks Jayden a bit about his social media presence. Jayden has a unique take, as he is someone who creates content for and with 'influencers' and yet, he doesn't spend time on social media himself. Hear his 'behind the scenes' look at life surrounded by people known on social media, and, what it's like to live with someone who is so 'online' when he is so 'offline'. -- Jayden Lee is a photographer and composer based in Los Angeles.
